The Acura TL is a car that was manufactured by Acura, the luxury division of Honda. It was introduced in 1995 to replace the Acura Vigor and was badged for the Japanese-market from 1996 to 2000 as the Honda Inspire and from 1996 to 2004 as the Honda Saber. The TL was Acura's best-selling model until it was outsold by the MDX in 2007. In 2005, it ranked as the second best-selling luxury sedan in the United States behind the BMW 3 Series, but sales decreased after the 2008 model year. Four generations of the Acura TL were produced, with the final fourth generation TL premiering in 2008 as a 2009 model and ending production in 2014, when it was replaced together with the TSX by the TLX.

First generation (UA1–UA3; 1996–1998)

The TL "Touring Luxury" debuted as 1996 model, first with the 1996 2.5 TL available with the 2.5 L 176 hp (131 kW) SOHC 20-valve 5-cylinder engine from the Vigor. The 3.2 TL used the 3.2 L 200 hp (149 kW) SOHC 24v V6 from the second generation Acura Legend. The model with the 2.0-liter inline-five was not offered in the US market. The debut of the TL signaled Acura's shift from traditional vehicle names to alphanumeric designations. By replacing recognizable names such as Vigor and Legend with a two-letter designation, the luxury maker hoped to focus consumer attention on the Acura name. The TL was the first Acura model to adopt the new naming scheme.

The 2.5 TL was positioned as the sporty model and the 3.2 focused more upon a luxurious ride. There were minimal styling differences between the two, but the 3.2 TL had larger tires despite the 2.5 TL's more sporty marketing. Moreover, the added power in the 3.2 TL gave it better acceleration. Both engines were mounted in a front-rear, or longitudinal position. This contrasted with the more typical transverse engine mount style, and was intended to provide better weight distribution and reduce nose dive. The engine mount design resulted in an elongated hood for the first generation TL, a shorter front overhang and longer wheelbase, fitting for a near-luxury car. The inline-5 engine in the 2.5 TL competed with similar 5-cylinder engines offered in Audi and Volvo models.

The first 1996 Acura TL was manufactured at Sayama, Japan on March 28, 1995. Sales of the 2.5 TL began in spring 1995, but the 3.2 TL was delayed until fall because of a U.S.-Japan trade dispute. The U.S. government had threatened to impose 100% tariffs on higher-priced Japanese cars in response a growing U.S.-Japan trade deficit. Ultimately a deal was reached which avoided the tariffs.

The first generation Acura TL had standard features including dual airbags, antilock brakes, automatic climate control, a cassette/CD player sound system, and power windows and locks. Leather was standard on the more upscale 3.2 TL, while the 2.5 TL featured a firmer suspension setup. Like its predecessor, the Vigor, this generation TL was a 4-door pillared hardtop, with frameless windows.

I was accelerating because I had just turned onto the highway, I got up to about 60 mph whe the car started dinging as it does when you open the door with the keys still in the ignition. The VSA light, as well as the engine, oil, abs and battery lights all started flashing on the dash and the car turned off. The steering wheel locked up and I had to throw it in neutral, turning the key back and forth from the off position to the start position to get it to unlock right before I crashed into on coming traffick! There has been nothing wrong with the car other than routine maintenance an absolutely no signs anything is wrong with the car. It has 168436 miles on it and has been religiously maintained. There is a SERIOUS problem with this vehicle for something like this to happen. I've owned hundreds of cars and never experienced anything like this happening, ever!

  • Summary: I noticed a vertical straight line/crack in the dashboard of my 2008 Acura TL located on the passenger side, which is directly in the area of the air bag system. Oddly enough it seemed to appear literally overnight. I’ve noticed the crack seems to expand when in cooler temperatures, however the crack appears to fuse back together when the temperature is warmer and/or hot outside, which is concerning in itself. My vehicle has been stored in a garage since it’s purchase and when not in use a sunshade is used to protect the dash when exposed outside. I am very concerned that there may be a bigger problem with the air bag system that may result in the air bags being inadvertently deployed resulting in an accident, injury or even greater death. Internet searches reveal this a common problem among individuals similarly situated with the same make and model, and Acura is apparently aware. My vehicle is regularly serviced and maintained at the Acura Dealership in Memphis. I have reached out to the dealership regarding this issue, however I have not heard back from them regarding a possible resolution. I believe this issue warrants some type of safety recall before someone or their loved ones become seriously injured.

THE DRIVER AND FRONT AND REAR PASSENGERS HAD RINGING IN THEIR EARS AND SAW FLASHING LIGHTS DUE TO THE AIR BAG EXPLOSION. THERE WERE NO INJURIES AND MEDICAL ATTENTION WAS NOT RECEIVED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER OR AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE CONTACT CALLED THE ACURA HOTLINE AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT NUMBER AT 800-382-2238 AND WAS INFORMED THAT THEY WOULD CALL THE ACURA DEALER AND SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT TO TOW THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT WAS PROVIDED CASE NUMBER: 09727380. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 125,000.

  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:ACCELERATOR PEDAL
  • Summary: Dorman Products, Inc. (Dorman) is recalling certain Accelerator Pedal Assemblies part numbers 699-114 and 825-5029-1, sold as replacement parts for 2003-2006 Acura MDX, 2004-2008 Acura TL and TSX, 2003-2007 Honda Accord, 2005-2006 Honda CR-V, 2007-2011 Honda Element, 2005-2008 Honda Pilot and 2006-2014 Honda Ridgeline vehicles. The rotating portion of the accelerator pedal assembly may bind. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 124, "Accelerator Control Systems."
  • Consequence: If the accelerator pedal binds, the engine may not quickly return to idle after the pedal is no longer pressed, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Dorman will notify owners, and qualified service facilities will replace the affected accelerator pedal assemblies, free of charge. The recall began December 9, 2019. Owners may contact Dorman customer service at 1-800-523-2492, using option 5. Dorman's number for this recall is AS1019XXXX.

  • Summary: Honda is recalling certain model year 2007 and 2008 Acura TL and model year 2003-2007 Accord V6 vehicles. In May 2012, Honda filed a defect report to recall certain model year 2007 and 2008 Acura TL vehicles. In September 2012, Honda informed the agency that it was including an additional 573,147 vehicles including certain model year 2003 through 2007 Accord V6 vehicles. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 625,762. Prolonged under-hood and power steering fluid temperatures may cause the power steering hose to deteriorate prematurely, resulting in cracks and power steering fluid leakage.
  • Consequence: If this occurs, power steering fluid can leak onto a hot catalytic converter, leading to smoke and possibly an under-hood fire.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will install a new heat resistant power steering hose, free of charge. The original recall began in June 2012, and owners of those vehicles may obtain the free remedy. Sufficient parts are not yet available for owners of the vehicles covered by the September 2012 expansion, but are expected to be available in early 2013. Honda will notify owners of these vehicles beginning on October 26, 2012, and will notify these owners again when parts are available so those vehicles can be brought to dealers for applications of the free remedy. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-800-999-1009.

  • Summary: AFFINIA IS RECALLING CERTAIN AFTERMARKET FRONT SUSPENSION LOWER BALL JOINTS, NAPA PART NO. 2601662, THAT MAY HAVE BEEN MISTAKENLY INSTALLED IN CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004 - 2008 ACURA TL VEHICLES DUE TO A MISTAKE IN A NAPA AND NAPA DEALERS' PARTS APPLICATION CATALOGUE.
  • Consequence: MISAPPLICATION OF THIS PART COULD LEAD TO SEPARATION OF THE BALL JOINT FROM THE LOWER CONTROL ARM AND COLLAPSE OF THE FRONT SUSPENSION, WHICH COULD POTENTIALLY CAUSE A VEHICLE CRASH.
  • Remedy: AFFINIA IS WORKING WITH NAPA TO IDENTIFY ANY OWNERS THAT HAVE HAD THIS PART MISTAKENLY INSTALLED ON TO AN ACURA TL VEHICLE, AND WILL REPLACE THE PART FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 20, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT AFFINIA GROUP'S WARRANTY ADMINISTRATOR AT 1-815-759-7757.

    Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share an experience I had with my Acura TL 2008. Recently, I noticed that the check engine light came on and I took it to Open Road Acura on Route 18 East Brunswick, NJ. They found a couple of codes (P0701 and P0704) and cleared them, but unfortunately, the light came back on after 24 hours. I did some investigating myself and found a few more codes (P0300, P0301, P0304, P0306, P0701, and P0704). I was a bit surprised that the dealer tech missed these codes, especially since my car has been with them since November 10, 2010 and it's now November 22, 2010.     This car has several issues, including a shot Rack and Pinion, a leaking valve cover gasket, rough shifting, a self-adjusting mirror, an alarm that goes off unexpectedly, and a sagging headliner. Despite my initial expectations, I am disappointed with the quality of this Acura vehicle. However, I am confident that these issues can be resolved with the right expertise and attention. I look forward to finding a solution and improving my experience with this car.

    Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2008 Acura TL that I purchased in early December. Unfortunately, after only two weeks and 2000 miles, the cam shaft seized and required 20 days of repair time. While I understand that this is not a common issue, I was disappointed with how Acura handled the situation. When I asked for a replacement, they offered me an extended warranty instead and did not take responsibility for the issue. As a result, I have decided that this will be my first and last Acura. If you're currently in the market for a new car, I encourage you to consider all of your options and keep in mind the importance of good customer service.     I drove a 1993 Honda Accord LX Coupe for 15 years and 400,000 miles, and recently traded it in for an '08 Acura TL. While I really enjoyed my Accord and it never gave me any trouble, I have unfortunately experienced some issues with my TL. It has been making rattling sounds in various places, which has been a bit frustrating. I have had to visit the dealer about 4 times in the first month alone, which has been a bit of a hassle. The first time was due to some sunroof problems and engine check light on, as well as some issues with shifting gears. It was a bit stressful and time-consuming, but thankfully the dealer was able to help me out and provide me with an extended warranty. While I have had to make a few more visits to the dealer since then, I am hopeful that these issues will be resolved soon.

    It's been a year and a half since I got my TL-S and I've put 13K miles on it. Overall, it's a great car! I get 19-20 MPG in the city and 30-32 MPG on the highway at 72 MPH. The suspension is good and the surround sound is great. There are a few minor issues, such as the lack of a fold-down rear seat and a CD case holder in the car. Also, rain tends to roll off the roof onto the driver's seat when you open the door. It would be nice to have a passenger seat height adjustment. However, these issues are minor and don't detract from the overall experience. I'm happy to report that I got 86 more HP than my 01 Accord for the price of 91 octane and with no real mileage penalty. I had considered a G35, but I didn't want RWD in the snow and the Acura has much higher MPG.

    No perfect care exists, but the 2008 TL Type S comes close for an attainable price. It's an excellent blend of power, handling, and interior refinement. Compared to a BMW, it's significantly more affordable. While the G35 and IS350 are good cars, they lack the professional finish seen in Acura vehicles. After a week of ownership, I haven't noticed any visible flaws. The voice command feature of the DVD-navigation system does take some time to learn and perfect, but it's worth the effort.

    Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my thoughts on the TL with Navi. After test-driving both the base TL and the S, I ended up going with the S. It's such a fun car to drive and has plenty of torque off the line. Plus, it's really comfortable for my daily commute. I went with the Crystal White Pearl exterior and Ebony/Silver interior, and I've been getting so many compliments on the color. I've put about 900 miles on it so far, and I'm happy to report that my MPG has been around 26 for the past 650 miles (I reset the trip computer after the initial tank of gas from the dealer). My commute is a mix of city and highway driving, as I travel from Philadelphia to the NW suburbs, about 27 miles each way. Let me know if you have any questions or if you're considering getting a TL too!

    When it rains, the side windows barely get wet, but if you crack the window to smoke, water can pour into the car, getting everything wet, even if it's only sprinkling or misting. I've taken this car on 1000+ mile trips 4 times and it's been a reliable companion. The console is a bit small and poorly designed, making it difficult to store or reach anything. If you ever drop something between the console and the seat, it's a challenge to retrieve it unless you have very small arms or hands. So, be careful not to lose anything valuable, like your wedding ring! On the bright side, the navigation system is great and the car drives smoothly, getting an impressive 35 miles per gallon at 75 MPH. The sound system is good enough and the only downside is that the passenger seat can get uncomfortable on long drives.

    After my brother purchased a 2008 Acura TL S-Type, he recommended that I test drive it. He suggested that I stop looking at more expensive cars like the Jaguar XF and the Audi A6. I took his advice and I'm so glad I did! The car is solid, fast, and luxurious. In Pearl White, it's a very sharp-looking car. I was sold within 5 minutes of the test drive, and the driving experience just gets better with time. Although it will take me some time to learn how to use all the features that come with the car, I'm excited to study the owner's manual while tanning on the beaches of Southern Italy this summer. Thanks to my brother's recommendation, I'm now driving the same car as him and I couldn't be happier!
