First generation (UA1–UA3; 1996–1998)
The TL "Touring Luxury" debuted as 1996 model, first with the 1996 2.5 TL available with the 2.5 L 176 hp (131 kW) SOHC 20-valve 5-cylinder engine from the Vigor. The 3.2 TL used the 3.2 L 200 hp (149 kW) SOHC 24v V6 from the second generation Acura Legend. The model with the 2.0-liter inline-five was not offered in the US market. The debut of the TL signaled Acura's shift from traditional vehicle names to alphanumeric designations. By replacing recognizable names such as Vigor and Legend with a two-letter designation, the luxury maker hoped to focus consumer attention on the Acura name. The TL was the first Acura model to adopt the new naming scheme.

The first 1996 Acura TL was manufactured at Sayama, Japan on March 28, 1995. Sales of the 2.5 TL began in spring 1995, but the 3.2 TL was delayed until fall because of a U.S.-Japan trade dispute. The U.S. government had threatened to impose 100% tariffs on higher-priced Japanese cars in response a growing U.S.-Japan trade deficit. Ultimately a deal was reached which avoided the tariffs.

- Summary: While highyway driving for 6 hours the “Check system charging” light came on for a few minutes, then went off for 10 or so minutes, then came back on. I was 10 miles from exit. I exited and left the car running while I checked in to motel. Drove to a parking place, turned off car engine, took a bag to room. When I came back out, flames were flaring from under the hood from battery area near fight front. The car had about 33,500 miles on it. A few weeks before, a “check battery” light had come on briefly. I took the car to dealership and told them about the battery light. I was going on a long trip so I told them to check everything. They replaced the battery and claimed to have checked the alternator, which they said was good. Even though the car only had less than 33,000 miles at that point, this was the fourth battery the car had had put in. 1) the original, 2) second put in by the same dealer, 3) a third when my battery went dead at a casino le one night. The valet charged it and I drove to an all night Autoxone where I bought a new batttery, and 4) the last one a few weeks ago. The Acura had a hard cardboard engine cover that you have to unscrew and remove to access the battery or the rest of the engine. This cover was completely burned up. The car was totaled. I believe the cardboard engine cover played a big part of the fire. Note: the fire occurred at Prescott, Arkansas. I had driven about 7 hours from Austin, Texas that day. The car was serviced in Las Vegas. I have pictures in my phone of the burned out car which I can send to you.

- Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

- Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain model year 2007-2011 Honda CR-V, 2011-2015 CR-Z, 2010-2014 FCX, and Insight, 2009-2013 Fit, 2013-2014 Fit EV, 2007-2014 Ridgeline, 2013-2016 Acura ILX, 2013-2014 Acura ILX Hybrid, 2007-2016 RDX, 2005-2012 Acura RL, 2009-2014 Acura TL, and 2010-2013 Acura ZDX vehicles. The affected vehicles are equipped with a dual-stage driver frontal air bag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion which, over time, could cause the inflator to rupture.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the inflator, free of charge. The recall began March 2017. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are JY0, JY1, and JY2.

My car has been leaking water into the trunk since day one, and unfortunately, despite five attempts to fix it, the issue persists. I am considering filing a lemon law claim. The leak seems to be particularly severe when the car is parked on an incline. I hope that Honda will take the necessary steps to address this issue and make things right.

After comparing several vehicles at the $39K price cap, I found that the TL was the perfect choice for me. I noticed that there were too many identical Infiniti G37s around town, which didn't appeal to me. The Lincoln MKZ & MKS still feel a half-step behind in their luxury effort, and the Lexus ES feels too mature while the IS is too cute. However, the Acura car is not only stunning to look at, but the interior craftsmanship, powertrain performance, and tech features give me the impression of solid modern luxury. Additionally, the interior ergonomics are a near perfect fit for my 5'5

My last car was a C70 from Volvo, prior to that a Boxster-S. This car drives more like the Boxster, only with room for friends.

This is my 3rd post here on this car. The big change since the last post is that the dealer was able to find the source of the 'squeal'. They replaced a piece of the drive shaft and now everything is working perfectly. At 25K, no other issues have developed. I'm really enjoying the car now and it's holding up well.

I've always had remote start with my cars for the last 15 years. This time, I went with Acura Remote. It cost $900 and you only get one remote start, and it's quite heavy. I need a janitor's pouch to carry the remote start and the FOB. It seems like a luxury car is a step down from my previous Chevy Malibu.

I purchased a 2010 Acura TL w/Tech brand new, but unfortunately, the pillar by the driver's side began to rattle/crack after only 100 miles. Despite taking the car back to the dealer 7 times, the issue was never resolved. Acura sent out one of their experts to help fix the issue, but unfortunately, the experience was not positive. However, I believe that Acura can improve their customer service, both at the corporate and dealership level. In hindsight, I wish I had purchased a BMW 3 series or an Infiniti G, but I hope that Acura can learn from this experience and improve their quality and customer service. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

When buying a car, it's important to keep in mind two rules that can save you a lot of trouble. Firstly, always test drive the exact car you plan to buy. Secondly, don't believe the salesman when they say that all cars are the same. Unfortunately, my 2010 Acura TL has had some issues with severe vibrations since I bought it, which can be felt throughout the cabin and the steering wheel at highway speeds. Although it was initially dismissed, the dealership has finally admitted to the issue and is calling in an engineer to help. They have tried changing the rotors, tires, rims, and half-shafts, but the problem persists. I'm disappointed with the vehicle and Acura's response, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone without first taking it for a test drive at highway speeds for an extended period of time.
