The Acura TL is a car that was manufactured by Acura, the luxury division of Honda. It was introduced in 1995 to replace the Acura Vigor and was badged for the Japanese-market from 1996 to 2000 as the Honda Inspire and from 1996 to 2004 as the Honda Saber. The TL was Acura's best-selling model until it was outsold by the MDX in 2007. In 2005, it ranked as the second best-selling luxury sedan in the United States behind the BMW 3 Series, but sales decreased after the 2008 model year. Four generations of the Acura TL were produced, with the final fourth generation TL premiering in 2008 as a 2009 model and ending production in 2014, when it was replaced together with the TSX by the TLX.

First generation (UA1–UA3; 1996–1998)

The TL "Touring Luxury" debuted as 1996 model, first with the 1996 2.5 TL available with the 2.5 L 176 hp (131 kW) SOHC 20-valve 5-cylinder engine from the Vigor. The 3.2 TL used the 3.2 L 200 hp (149 kW) SOHC 24v V6 from the second generation Acura Legend. The model with the 2.0-liter inline-five was not offered in the US market. The debut of the TL signaled Acura's shift from traditional vehicle names to alphanumeric designations. By replacing recognizable names such as Vigor and Legend with a two-letter designation, the luxury maker hoped to focus consumer attention on the Acura name. The TL was the first Acura model to adopt the new naming scheme.

The 2.5 TL was positioned as the sporty model and the 3.2 focused more upon a luxurious ride. There were minimal styling differences between the two, but the 3.2 TL had larger tires despite the 2.5 TL's more sporty marketing. Moreover, the added power in the 3.2 TL gave it better acceleration. Both engines were mounted in a front-rear, or longitudinal position. This contrasted with the more typical transverse engine mount style, and was intended to provide better weight distribution and reduce nose dive. The engine mount design resulted in an elongated hood for the first generation TL, a shorter front overhang and longer wheelbase, fitting for a near-luxury car. The inline-5 engine in the 2.5 TL competed with similar 5-cylinder engines offered in Audi and Volvo models.

The first 1996 Acura TL was manufactured at Sayama, Japan on March 28, 1995. Sales of the 2.5 TL began in spring 1995, but the 3.2 TL was delayed until fall because of a U.S.-Japan trade dispute. The U.S. government had threatened to impose 100% tariffs on higher-priced Japanese cars in response a growing U.S.-Japan trade deficit. Ultimately a deal was reached which avoided the tariffs.

The first generation Acura TL had standard features including dual airbags, antilock brakes, automatic climate control, a cassette/CD player sound system, and power windows and locks. Leather was standard on the more upscale 3.2 TL, while the 2.5 TL featured a firmer suspension setup. Like its predecessor, the Vigor, this generation TL was a 4-door pillared hardtop, with frameless windows.

I have taken my vehicle to Hondaa and a few local shops no one could identify the issue but confirmed brakes rotors were good and no leakes. After searching online I found many people experiencing the same issue which seems to be a known issue Acura is aware of....there seems to be a problem with the VSA Modular failing which is leaking air into the brake line and causing spongy brakes. This is sooooo dangerous as it happens out of no where Im driving normal and suddenly it feels like I have no brakes. The spongy brakes cause a lag in stopping and if for some reason I have to suddenly stop I would be unable to...this symptom last sometimes minutes, hours, and days with no reason and then brakes return to normal. Im afraid to drive my vehicle as this is dangerius and a safety issue. Acura should issue a recall as this is putting lives in danger.

THEY COMPLETED A DIAGNOSTICS AND ENDED UP 1. REPLACING THE CRANK POSITION SENSOR; 2. PERFORMING TRANSMISSION SERVICE; AND PERFORMING FUEL INDUCTION SERVICE. THE PROBLEM STILL EXISTS AND I AM NOT SURE HOW TO PROCEED. BASED ON MY REVIEW OF ACURA BLOGS ON THE INTERNET, IT SEEMS THAT THE PROBLEM IS EXTREMELY PREVALENT AMONGST OTHER ACURA TL OWNERS AND MIGHT BE RELATED TO THE TORQUE CONVERTER. I WAS INFORMED BY MY LOCAL DEALER IN THE ORLANDO, FL AREA THAT I NEEDED TO BRING IN THE VEHICLE IN AND SIGN A WAIVER THAT I WOULD NOT DRIVE THE VEHICLE UNTIL REPAIRED BUT THAT I NEEDED TO BRING SOMEONE ELSE WITH ME THAT WOULD DRIVE THE VEHICLE BACK TO MY HOME. THEREFORE, ACURA AGREES THAT THE VEHICLE IS DANGEROUS ENOUGH FOR ME NOT TO DRIVE BUT THAT I SHOULD HAVE 'SOMEONE ELSE' DRIVE IT BACK WHICH WOULD BE AN HOUR DRIVE. NOT SURE IF THAT 'SOMEONE ELSE' SHOULD BE A TEENAGER OR MY WIFE WHO'S LIFE I WOULD BE JEOPARDIZING IN THEIR EYES. BECAUSE THE DEALER WAS NOT AGREEING TO STORE THE VEHICLE WHILE IT WAITED ON PARTS AND BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE VEHICLE, I HAD TO CONTACT CORPORATE AGAIN. THIS TIME THE ACURA CLIENT RELATIONS REPRESENTATIVE READ ME WHAT SOUNDED LIKE A SCRIPT THAT ADVISED ME THAT I COULD CONTINUE TO DRIVE THE CAR BECAUSE THE RECALL LETTER MAY HAVE SOUNDED HARSH BUT THE ONLY REAL PROBLEMS WERE WITH HONDA CIVICS OF MUCH OLDER YEARS. I FOUND THIS INTERESTING THAT THEY WOULD INFLUENCE ME TO CONTINUE TO DRIVE WHAT THE NHTSA HAS DETERMINED IS A DANGEROUS VEHICLE PROMPTING A RECALL AND THUS INCREASE THEIR LIABILITY FOR ANY INJURIES OR DEATHS THAT MAY OCCUR. THEREFORE MY COMPLAINT IS THAT ACURA IS ENCOURAGING OWNERS TO CONTINUE TO PUT THEIR LIVES, THE LIVES OF THEIR FAMILIES AND INNOCENT BYSTANDERS AT RISK THAT COULD RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURIES INCLUDING DEATH. IT ADVISES TO TAKE THE CAR TO THE DEALER TO HAVE A NEW AIRBAG ORDERED AND IF WANTED, RECEIVE ALTERNATE TRANSPORTATION. THE DEALER DID OFFER ALTERNATE TRANSPORTATION WITH WHICH YOU AGREE TO PARK THE RECALLED VEHICLE UNTIL REPAIRS ARE MADE. THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THE DEALER ADVISED THEY HAVE NO PROCEDURES TO INSTALL THE NEW AIRBAG NOR DO THEY HAVE THE PARTS. THE DEALER ADVISED IT COULD TAKE UNTIL SEPTEMBER 2016 OR MAYBE EVEN LONGER, BEFORE THE REPAIR CAN BE MADE. THE DEALER ADVISED THEY HAVE NO FURTHER INFORMATION BEYOND WHAT HAS JUST BEEN STATED. IF MY CAR SITS FOR ANOTHER FIVE MONTHS OR LONGER THERE IS NO CONSIDERATION FOR THE DEPRECIATION OF MY VEHICLE WHILE IT IS PARKED. WHY NOT? ALSO, HOW GREAT IS THE HAZARD AS THE DEALER ADVISED SOME OWNERS ARE CONTINUING TO DRIVE THEIR VEHICLE AWAITING THE REPLACEMENT OF THE AIRBAG. REMEMBER, THE RECALL NOTICE STATES "THESE VEHICLES COULD KILL OR INJURE YOU". SO THE CONSUMER IS LEFT WITH THE DECISION TO RISK LIFE AND LIMB OR PARK THE VEHICLE WITH NO IDEA WHEN IT WOULD BE REPAIRED! I CANNOT TRADE THE CAR WITH THIS RECALL NOTICE PENDING AND EXPECT TO GET FULL VALUE FOR IT. ACURA ADVISED THEY WOULD NOT PROVIDE ANY ADDITIONAL COMPENSATION OTHER THAN THE RENTAL CAR.   • Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2013 Acura ILX, 2015 RDX, 2005-2010 and 2012 RL, 2009-2014 TL, 2010 and 2012 ZDX, 2007-2011 CR-V, 2011-2013 and 2015 CR-Z, 2009-2013 Fit, 2013 Fit EV, 2010-2011 and 2013 Insight and 2007-2014 Ridgeline vehicles. These vehicles are equipped with driver frontal air bag inflators assembled as a recall remedy part or replacement service part, that may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.
  • Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began August 12, 2019. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are S5B and W59.

  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's air bag inflator with an alternate inflator, free of charge. The recall began April 10, 2019. I'm so glad to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your third Acura. It's great to hear that the changes from the previous models are so drastic and that every detail was thought of. I especially love that the windshield wipers no longer leave a streak of water on the windshield in front of the driver's eyes - that's such a thoughtful feature! And the interior sounds amazing - high tech, functional, and definitely not boring. It's great to hear that the suspension is now softer and more forgiving, and that the car is wider and longer, giving you more space. The tech package sounds like it really takes things to the next level, too - the color backup camera, iPod integration, Navi with weather and traffic updates, and push button are all fantastic features. All in all, it sounds like you've got an amazing car on your hands! Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me.

    When you start to initiate a corner, the suspension grabs the road, making you feel even more secure. I am amazed at how they accomplished this, and I wish I had a picture to show you the linkage near the rear tires. There are days when I like to slumber home, and the new TL coddles you home. Putting the gear shifter into sport mode using the paddle shifters tightens up the suspension (I wonder if it has to do with the transmission either advancing the vehicle or slowing the car down when you let off the accelerator), making it perfect for racing around. The integration of iPod, flash and hard drive is easy to use, and once you get used to them, you wonder how you lived without them.

    I've only had this car for a few days but I absolutely love it so far. The looks were iffy at first but have really grown on me for the models with black exterior/black interior. The handling is superb - it doesn't roll much but has a soft highway ride at the same time. The brakes are awesome and I love the electric steering - absolutely no play = precision. So far there isn't anything I don't like about this. This is a great value for the money.

    In a world of luxury cars that cost $55k or more, the features of this car are an absolute steal at only $36k. It comes with a SOTA navigation system and screen, real-time weather and traffic updates, keyless entry and start, real leather seats, full iPod integration, a hard disc drive to store CDs, a moonroof, xenon headlights, tilt/telescope steering wheel, seat memories, power driver/passenger seats, tremendous interior room, and an amazingly sized back seat. I felt like I was getting away with something. The FWD model has great ride and handling, and it handles potholes perfectly. I drove the SH-AWD and it was a hard ride, so if you live where the roads are not smooth, the FWD car is the way to go.

    I drove a G37x, A4, and 3 series. This car was definitely the most technologically advanced and had the best price. We are absolutely thrilled with it. It drives like a dream and the tech package makes the car extremely entertaining. The sound system is incredible. I don't think I have ever heard music sound as good. It has a very smooth ride, yet feels sporty when you want to push it hard.
