2000 Volvo V70xc problems

volvo logo

The Volvo V70 is an executive car manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars from 1996 to 2016 across three generations. The name V70 combines the letter V, standing for versatility, and 70, denoting relative platform size (i.e., a V70 is larger than a V40, but smaller than a V90).

The first generation (1996–2000) debuted in November 1996. It was based on the P80 platform and was available with front and all-wheel drive (AWD), the latter marketed as the V70 AWD. In September 1997, a crossover version called the V70 XC or V70 Cross Country was introduced. The sedan model was called Volvo S70.

The second generation (2000–2007) debuted in spring 2000. It was based on the P2 platform and, as with its predecessor, was also offered as an all-wheel drive variant marketed as the V70 AWD and as a crossover version initially called V70 XC. For the 2003 model year, the crossover was renamed to XC70. The sedan model was called Volvo S60.

The third generation (2007–2016) debuted in February 2007. It was based on the P3 platform and marketed as the V70 and the XC70. Production of the V70 ended on 25 April 2016, the XC70 continued until 13 May 2016. The sedan model was called Volvo S80.

Common 2000 Volvo V70xc problems

The Volvo V70XC 2000 is known for several common problems, primarily related to its engine, transmission, and electrical systems.

Engine Issues:

  • Fuel System Leaks: Leaks in the emissions system can cause poor starting and intermittent running issues. The fuel system on the later P80 models uses pressure to pump fuel from the LH to RH side of the tank. A leak in the emissions system can cause a loss of pressure, leading to starting problems. The first place to check for leaks is around the carbon canister, particularly the pipe that runs from the canister to the rollover valve.
  • Fuel Relay Failure: Another possible cause of starting problems is a failed fuel relay. Replacing the fuel relay can resolve the issue, and this part is relatively inexpensive and can be found on Amazon for around $35.

Transmission Issues:

  • Internal Problem in Valve Body: Some owners have reported issues with the valve body in the transmission, which can cause slamming in gear. This issue is most likely due to bands and clutch plates wearing out or failing.
  • Lower Torque Mount: A soft torque mount can cause jerking during upshifts and braking. Replacing the torque mount can resolve this issue.

Electrical Issues:

  • ECM (Engine Control Module) Failure: The ECM is responsible for controlling various engine functions. Failure of this component can lead to various engine performance issues, including starting problems.
  • Odometer/Tripmeter Failure: The odometer and tripmeter functions in the 1993-1997 850 models use a small plastic gear that is prone to cracking as it ages. This can result in intermittent or complete loss of odometer/tripmeter function. Replacing the gear kit and following the included DVD install guide can resolve this issue for under $50 and 1-2 hours of time.

Other Issues:

  • Upper Engine Mount Failure: The upper engine mount, also called the upper engine stabilizer, is prone to failing in as little as 10,000 miles. This can result in an alarming knock when accelerating or shifting gears.
  • Anti Sway Bar End Link Failure: The anti sway bar end links with ball joint connections are known to wear out and begin knocking and clunking in as little as 10,000 miles. If left unattended, the links can break, disconnecting the anti sway bar from the chassis, resulting in very poor handling response and random clunks and knocks.
  • Crankcase Vent System Clogging: The crankcase vent system in these models is prone to clogging up with oil deposits, which can cause crankcase pressure to build up and result in oil leaks around the engine. Replacing all associated components every 80-100,000 miles can help prevent this issue.
  • Front Strut Mount Failure: The rubber encased upper spring seat/strut is prone to failure in these models. Replacing the strut mount can help prevent this issue.

In summary, the Volvo V70XC 2000 is known for several common problems related to its engine, transmission, and electrical systems. These issues can range from minor inconveniences to major repairs, and some can be resolved with relatively simple fixes. However, it is essential to address these issues promptly to prevent further damage and ensure the safe and reliable operation of the vehicle.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-12-13
  • VIN: YV1LZ56D5Y2
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: MY 2000 VOLVO XC70 DEVELOPED A DANGEROUS ENGINE CONDITION THAT NEEDS TO BE REPORTED AND CORRECTED. THE DASHBOARD INDICATED A RED ETS LIGHT WHICH ACCORDING TO THE OWNERS MANUAL NEEDS TO BE DIAGNOSED BY A CERTIFIED VOLVO MECHANIC. I TOOK THE CAR TO AN INDEPENDENT VOLVO GARAGE WHO IDENTIFIED THE PROBLEM AS A THROTTLE BODY MALFUNCTION IN THE INTAKE OF THE ENGINE. THE GARAGE MADE A TEMPORARY ($300) REPAIR AND RECOMMENDED THAT I VISIT A VOLVO DEALER AND WARNED THAT AN APPROPRIATE REPAIR WOULD COST AS MUCH AS $1,000 INCLUDING PARTS AND LABOR. ACCORDING TO THE VARIOUS VOLVO FORUMS, THIS IS A COMMON AND COSTLY PROBLEM WITH THESE VOLVOS. THE SYMPTOMS INCLUDE HESITATION WHEN ACCELERATING, FLUCTUATING IDLE RPM AND OUTRIGHT STALLING. THIS IS A DANGEROUS CONDITION. I HAVE PARKED THE CAR UNTIL I CAN BE REASONABLY ASSURED THAT THIS CAN BE SUITABLY REPAIRED PREFERABLY AT VOLVO EXPENSE. *TR

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-12-04
  • VIN: YV1LZ56D5Y2
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: WHILE DRIVING OUR 2000 VOLVO V70 XC, THE THROTTLE BEGAN ACTING STRANGE, REQUIRING US TO PRESS MUCH MORE THAN USUAL ON THE THROTTLE TO AVOID THE ENGINE CUTTING OUT, WHILE PULLING OUT INTO TRAFFIC. THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, WHO DIAGNOSED A FAULTY ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE, AND I WAS TOLD IT WOULD BE COVERED UNDER AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. THE PART WAS ORDERED, AND IN EARLY JANUARY 2010, I RETURNED TO THE DEALER FOR INSTALLATION. THE CAR HAS BEEN GETTING WORSE, AND WE HAVE COME VERY CLOSE TO HAVING AN ACCIDENT DUE TO THE FAULTY DESIGN. WHEN THE CAR WAS BROUGHT TO THE DEALER FOR THE WARRANTY REPAIR, THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE CAR WAS 'WARRANTY EXCLUDED', AND WOULD NOT BE COVERED, DUE TO THE STATUS OF THE TITLE. MY RESEARCH HAS INDICATED THAT THIS IS AN EXTREMELY COMMON PROBLEM, WHICH THERE WAS A RECALL TO RECALIBRATE THE THROTTLE, BUT NO RECALL TO ADDRESS THE ACTUAL FAILURE. THIS SEEMS ODD THAT VOLVO WOULD NOT HONOR THE SPIRIT OF THE RECALL. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,EQUIPMENT,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-12-08
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: YV1LZ56D0Y2
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,EQUIPMENT,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)
  • Summary: PURCHASED CAR IN DEC 2006. WITHIN FEW MONTHS, BEGAN TO NOTICE THE CAR WOULD LOSE SPEED ON HIGHWAY AND DROP TO A SPEED ANYWHERE BETWEEN 60-80KM/HR. BLACK SMOKE ROLLED OUT EXHAUST. TOOK CAR TO DEALERSHIP (WHERE PREVIOUS OWNERS MAINTAINED CAR). SEVERAL FILTERS, SEALS, REPLACED. FEW MONTHS LATER THE SAME PROBLEM CONTINUED. RETURNED TO DEALERSHIP AND TOLD CAR NEEDED CATALYTIC CONVERTER. AFTER BEING TOLD THE COST, DEALERSHIP CALLED BACK TO SAY UNDER EMISSIONS WARRANTY. $1200 PART WAS COVERED BUT I PAID LABOR/OTHER PARTS. DEALER WAS ASKED ON BOTH OCCASIONS TO COMPLETE SERVICE DUE. FAILED TO COMPLETE THESE AS REQUESTED. PROBLEMS CONTINUED. THIS TIME THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THAT ETS WAS GONE CAUSING THE CAR TO GO INTO LIMP MODE. REPAIRS DONE AT A COST OF ALL $2600.00. LESS THAN A YEAR, SAME PROBLEM OCCURRED. THE OIL LIGHT CAME ON (THOUGH THERE WAS OIL IN THE CAR). THE CAR WAS TOWED TWO HOURS BACK HOME . WHEN I TOOK THE CAR TO A DIFFERENT INDEPENDENT GARAGE THEY (LIKE TWO OTHERS BEFORE) TOLD ME TO VOLVO. WENT BACK TO VOLVO BUT NOT BEFORE I HAD TO PULL OVER AND BE TOWED AGAIN. THE ENGINE BEGAN SMOKING, THE CAR SHOOK VIOLENTLY, THE OIL LIGHT (WHICH VOLVO HAD LESS THAN TWO WEEKS BEFORE SAID WAS FINE) CAME ON...THE REPORT BACK FROM VOLVO IS THAT THE ETS IS GONE AGAIN BUT ALSO THAT THE ENGINE REQUIRED REPLACING ($6000 JOB). THIS WAS MORE THAN TWO MONTHS AGO AND MY CAR STILL SITS AT VOLVO WAITING FOR RESOLVE. I STRONGLY BELIEVE THE ONGOING ISSUES ARE DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE NEED FOR A NEW ENGINE AND THAT VOLVO WAS NEGLIGENT IN THEIR RESPONSIBILITY (REPEATEDLY) TO MAKE THE NECESSARY REPAIRS. NOT ONLY AM I OUT THE $20 000.00 TO PURCHASE THE CAR ONLY TWO YEARS AGO, I AM OUT ABOUT $6000 FOR REPAIRS ALREADY COMPLETED AND AM NOW BEING TOLD IT WILL BE ANOTHER $6000 TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. *TR

  • Summary: 2000 VOLVO V70XC REAR LATCH FAILURE. MY XC WAGON HAS EXPERIENCED INTERMITTENT REAR LATCH FAILURES SINCE 2002. THE PROBLEM ONLY USED TO OCCUR DURING THE WINTERS, WHICH ACCOUNT FOR 3 MONTHS A YEAR IN MA. I BROUGHT IT IT TO MY VOLVO DEALER, BARRY'S VOLVO OF DARTMOUTH, MA ON 2/17/2004. SINCE THEY WERE TESTING IT IN THEIR HEATED GARAGE, OF COURSE, THE PROBLEM WAS NOT REPRODUCED. THEY LUBED THE LATCH AND SENT THE CAR HOME. WE DEALT WITH IT FOR A YEAR AND THEN I FOUND THE TSBS ON THE INTERNET, THANKS TO BRICKYARD.COM AND THE NHTSA. I HAVE SINCE TRIED TWO MORE TIMES TO GET MY DEALER TO REPAIR THE LATCH AS NOW THE LATCH FAILS JUST ABOUT EVERY TIME I CLOSE THE REAR TRUNK. I FEAR FOR MY CHILDREN'S SAFETY AS WELL AS MY PET, WHO RIDES IN THE REAR, AND ANY BELONGINGS WE PLACE BACK THERE. I HAVE CALLED VOLVO NA AND WAS TOLD THEY WOULD MAKE SURE MY DEALER WOULD REMEDY THE PROBLEM. I CALLED THE DEALER AGAIN AND THEY SAID THERE WAS NO SAFETY ISSUE, RECALL OR WHATEVER FOR MY CAR AND THEY WOULD GLADLY FIX IT AT MY EXPENSE. I'VE FINNALY HAD ENOUGH AND DECIDED TO FILE A COMPLAINT WITH THE NHTSA SINCE THERE IS A DOCUMENTED PROBLEM WITH THIS CAR, NHTSA00V239000

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-05-29
  • VIN: YV1LZ56D3Y2
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: UPON EXITING THE HIGHWAY, AFTER TRAVELING AT SPEED FOR 30 MINUTES, A KNOCKING SOUND CAME FROM THE ENGINE. THE ENGINE STALLED AT THE END OF THE EXIT RAMP AND STEAM WAS EVOLVING FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE WAS AT MAXIMUM. STEAM WAS EVOLVING NEAR THE TURBO AT THE FIREWALL. THE ENGINE COOLING FAN WAS NOT RUNNING, BUT MAKING A BUZZING SOUND. THE ENGINE OIL WAS HOT, STEAM OR SMOKE EVOLVED FROM THE DIP-STICK TUBE, BUT THE LEVEL WAS GOOD. THE COOLANT BOTTLE WAS EMPTY. I TRIED TO START THE ENGINE, THE ENGINE CRANKED RAPIDLY, AS IF THERE WAS NO COMPRESSION, AND MORE STEAM WAS PRODUCED AT THE EXHAUST SIDE OF THE HEAD. I PUSHED THE VEHICLE TO A NEARBY SERVICE STATION. THE SERVICE STATION TOPPED OFF THE COOLANT BOTTLE, PLACED THE VEHICLE ON A LIFT AND CRANKED THE ENGINE. FROM BELOW, COOLANT COULD BE SEEN EXITING THE EXHAUST SIDE OF THE ENGINE. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A NEARBY FOREIGN VEHICLE SERVICE STATION FOR FURTHER EVALUATION. THIS STATION DETERMINED THERE IS NO COMPRESSION IN CYLINDERS #2 THROUGH #5, AND ONLY 40 PSIG IN CYLINDER #1. THE TIMING BELT IS IN PLACE. THE STATION BELIEVES THE ENGINE HEAD IS CRACKED OR WARPED AND SUGGESTS THERE MAY BE CONSIDERABLE BOTTOM END DAMAGE AS WELL SUCH AS PISTONS, RINGS, AND CYLINDER SLEEVES DUE TO EXCESSIVE HEAT. I CONTACTED VOLVO CARS AND EXPLAINED THAT THIS INCIDENT SEEMS VERY SIMILAR TO THE CURRENT NHTSA CAMPAIGN # 04V451000 REGARDING ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM FAN FAILURE ON 2000-2001 V70'S AND 2001 V70XC'S (AND OTHER MODELS). VOLVO CONTENDS MY VEHICLE (A 2000 V70XC) IS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS RECALL. VOLVO CUSTOMER SERVICE WAS NOT ABLE TO CONFIRM THE COOLING FAN ON MY VEHICLE IS DIFFERENT THAN THE DEFECTIVE FAN COVERED BY THE RECALL. *JB
