2012 Acura Tl problems
The Acura TL is a car that was manufactured by Acura, the luxury division of Honda. It was introduced in 1995 to replace the Acura Vigor and was badged for the Japanese-market from 1996 to 2000 as the Honda Inspire and from 1996 to 2004 as the Honda Saber. The TL was Acura's best-selling model until it was outsold by the MDX in 2007. In 2005, it ranked as the second best-selling luxury sedan in the United States behind the BMW 3 Series, but sales decreased after the 2008 model year. Four generations of the Acura TL were produced, with the final fourth generation TL premiering in 2008 as a 2009 model and ending production in 2014, when it was replaced together with the TSX by the TLX.
First generation (UA1–UA3; 1996–1998)
The TL "Touring Luxury" debuted as 1996 model, first with the 1996 2.5 TL available with the 2.5 L 176 hp (131 kW) SOHC 20-valve 5-cylinder engine from the Vigor. The 3.2 TL used the 3.2 L 200 hp (149 kW) SOHC 24v V6 from the second generation Acura Legend. The model with the 2.0-liter inline-five was not offered in the US market. The debut of the TL signaled Acura's shift from traditional vehicle names to alphanumeric designations. By replacing recognizable names such as Vigor and Legend with a two-letter designation, the luxury maker hoped to focus consumer attention on the Acura name. The TL was the first Acura model to adopt the new naming scheme.
The 2.5 TL was positioned as the sporty model and the 3.2 focused more upon a luxurious ride. There were minimal styling differences between the two, but the 3.2 TL had larger tires despite the 2.5 TL's more sporty marketing. Moreover, the added power in the 3.2 TL gave it better acceleration. Both engines were mounted in a front-rear, or longitudinal position. This contrasted with the more typical transverse engine mount style, and was intended to provide better weight distribution and reduce nose dive. The engine mount design resulted in an elongated hood for the first generation TL, a shorter front overhang and longer wheelbase, fitting for a near-luxury car. The inline-5 engine in the 2.5 TL competed with similar 5-cylinder engines offered in Audi and Volvo models.
The first 1996 Acura TL was manufactured at Sayama, Japan on March 28, 1995. Sales of the 2.5 TL began in spring 1995, but the 3.2 TL was delayed until fall because of a U.S.-Japan trade dispute. The U.S. government had threatened to impose 100% tariffs on higher-priced Japanese cars in response a growing U.S.-Japan trade deficit. Ultimately a deal was reached which avoided the tariffs.
The first generation Acura TL had standard features including dual airbags, antilock brakes, automatic climate control, a cassette/CD player sound system, and power windows and locks. Leather was standard on the more upscale 3.2 TL, while the 2.5 TL featured a firmer suspension setup. Like its predecessor, the Vigor, this generation TL was a 4-door pillared hardtop, with frameless windows.

Common 2012 Acura Tl problems
The Acura TL is a popular vehicle known for its comfort and efficiency. However, like any car, it has some common problems that potential buyers should be aware of. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues with the Acura TL, specifically the 2012 model, based on complaints from owners:
- Hood closing unexpectedly: Some Acura TL owners have reported issues with the hood closing unexpectedly, which can make it difficult to perform routine maintenance checks and poses a safety risk. This problem is caused by faulty struts, which can be replaced by a dealer once the issue is identified.
- Sudden loss of engine power: A sudden loss of engine power while driving can be a frightening experience. One 2012 Acura TL owner reported this issue, which was found to be caused by malfunctioning intake and exhaust valves. Adjusting these valves seemed to solve the problem.
- Automatic lock malfunction: The automatic locks on some Acura TL models may not work properly, which can be a significant inconvenience. This problem is repairable by replacing the locks, but it can be expensive, as each lock is charged individually by dealerships.
- Electronic power steering failure: The electronic power steering system in some Acura TL models may fail, making the vehicle difficult to steer and control. This problem can be addressed by having the vehicle repaired at an Acura dealer.
- Excessive engine oil consumption: Some Acura TL owners have reported issues with excessive engine oil consumption, which can lead to engine failure if left unchecked. Regularly checking the oil level and addressing any oil consumption issues promptly is crucial to prevent engine damage.
- Hard shifting transmission: Some Acura TL models may experience issues with the automatic transmission not shifting smoothly. This problem does not appear to be damaging the vehicle but can be a significant inconvenience. A software update may help address this issue, but it may not provide a permanent solution.
- Excessive cabin noise: Some Acura TL owners have reported issues with excessive cabin noise, which can be unacceptable in newer cars, especially luxury vehicles. This problem may be caused by new tires or other factors and can be addressed by staying as close to OEM as possible when purchasing new tires.
- Electrical accessories: Some Acura TL owners have reported issues with various electrical accessories, including keyless entry, warning lights, tire pressure monitors, and headlights. These issues can range from minor annoyances to significant problems that may require replacement or repair.
It is important to note that while these issues are common, not all Acura TL owners will experience them. Regular maintenance and addressing any issues promptly can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.
What is the common problem with Acura TL?
The TL also has excellent ownership costs, low severity of repairs, and rarely develops major issues. The Acura TL can hit 100,000 miles or more without issue. Common Acura TL problems include engine troubles, electrical problems, and interior accessories issues.
Does the 2012 Acura TL have transmission problems?
2012 Acura TL Transmission Fluid
If you don't routinely and invariably change your fluids at least every 30,000 miles or so, you may find that your 2012 Acura TL transmission will expeditiously slip.

- VIN: 19UUA8F59CA
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: DRIVING ON INTERSTATE FOR 8 MIN AT 70 MPH ON A 70 DEGREE MORNING WHEN I LOST POWER TO THE ENGINE. LUCKILY, I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER TO THE SHOULDER. MY CERTIFIED MECHANIC DIAGNOSED THE ENGINE LOST ALL COMPRESSION. THE CAR HAS 98,000 MI. I CALLED ACURA CLIENT SERVICES AND THEY STATED IT HAD TO BE DIAGNOSED BY ACURA DEALER. THE DEALER STATED IT WAS A BLOWN ENGINE AND THEY HAVE NO IDEA HOW IT HAPPENED. I CALLED ACURA AGAIN AND THEY STATED THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. I STATED SOMETHING UNUSUAL HAS HAPPENED AND IT SHOULD BE RESEARCHED TO UNDERSTAND WHY. ENGINES SHOULDN'T JUST FAIL. ACURA STATED THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY AND THE CUSTOMER WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THE DIAGNOSIS BEFORE THEY WOULD REVIEW THE CLAIM. I PAID THE DEALER TO TEST. THE DEALER FILLED THE SYSTEM WITH FLUIDS AND SET THE VEHICLE OUTSIDE. HE CHECKED FOR LEAKS EVERY FEW HOURS. I TOLD HIM IT WAS A SLOW LEAK AND HE HAD TO MONITOR IT CLOSELY. THE DEALER STATED HE COULDN'T FIND ANY ISSUE. I CALLED ACURA AND TOLD THEM THE TEST WAS NOT CONDUCTED PROPERLY. ACURA STATED THE DEALER CAN'T FIND THE ISSUE AND NO MORE INVESTIGATION CAN BE DONE. I ASKED ACURA WHY THEY ARE NOT HAVING THEIR FIELD TEAM REVIEW THIS INCIDENT. ACURA STATES IT'S A CUSTOMER ISSUE NOT AN ACURA ISSUE. WITHOUT CONDUCTING THE PROPER TESTING & DIAGNOSIS THAT CONCLUSION CANNOT BE MADE. ACURA REFUSES TO AUTHORIZE THE DEALER TO INVESTIGATE THE DEFECT PROPERLY. ACURA REFUSES TO HAVE THEIR FIELD TECHNICIANS, WARRANTY GROUP, AND SUPPLIER REVIEW THE DEFECT, ASKS THE CUSTOMER TO PAY TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. ACURA'S POLICY TO NOT REVIEW MAJOR FIELD ISSUES WITH THEIR VEHICLES OUTSIDE OF WARRANTY IS A DANGEROUS POSITION ESPECIALLY WHEN IT IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE WITH A BLOWN ENGINE. ACURA'S CORPORATE STRATEGY TO SUPPRESS AN INVESTIGATION UNTIL A MAJOR INCIDENT HAPPENS CREATES A POTENTIAL RISKY PRODUCT LIABILITY WITH ALL THEIR CUSTOMERS.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-05-17
- VIN: 19UUA8F2XCA
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: WHEN I WAS STOPPED AT A STOP SIGN AWAITING A BREAK TO ENTER INTO HEAVY TRAFFIC I SAW A GAP AND PRESSED THE GAS PEDAL BUT THE ENGINE DID NOT RESPOND. I GENTLY PRESSED UNTIL IT WAS ABOUT 1/4 DOWN AND STILL NOTHING HAPPENED. I THEN GENTLY PRESSED IT A LITTLE MORE AND THE CAR BOLTED FORWARD AT A DANGEROUS SPEED DIRECTLY INTO TRAFFIC WHICH COULD HAVE ALMOST KILLED ME. THIS WAS JUST ONE SITUATION, THERE ARE MANY OTHERS. THIS PROBLEM DOESN'T HAPPEN ON A PREDICTABLE BASIS AND CANNOT BE DUPLICATED WHEN DESIRED. THIS HAS HAPPED DOZENS OF TIMES OVER THE YEARS. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALERSHIP WHILE IT WAS UNDER WARRANTY AND THEY SAID THAT THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE SITUATION THEREFORE CANNOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. I SPOKE TO SOMEONE THERE AND HE SAID THAT HE HAS HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH ONE OF THEIR FLEET VEHICLES AND HAD TO REPLACE THE APP ( ACCELERATOR PEDAL POSITION SENSOR) 2 TIMES FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. I PRESENTED THE PROBLEM TO THE DEALERSHIP SHORTLY AFTER BUYING THE CAR AND A COUPLE TIME AFTERWARDS OVER TIME TO GET THE SAME COMMENT THAT THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE IT. LATELY IT HAS BECOME WORSE. Q#1 WHAT LAW COVERS A SITUATION WHEN AN OWNER PRESENTS THE SAME PROBLEM TO A DEALERSHIP DURING THE WARRANTY COVERAGE PERIOD AND IT IS DOCUMENTED AND AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRES - IS IT STILL COVERED UNDER MFG EXPENSE? BASICALLY, IF A CAR IS TAKEN IN FOR A PROBLEM UNDER THE WARRANTY PERIOD AND THE SAME PROBLEM EXISTS AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRES IS IT STILL COVERED. IN MY OPINION I BELIEVE THAT THEY DENIED THAT THE PROBLEM EXISTED BECAUSE THIS WOULD PROVOKE A MASSIVE RECALL THAT THEY DIDN'T WANT TO PAY FOR. WHAT OPTIONS DO I HAVE TO MAKE THEM ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM AND REPAIR IT AT THEIR EXPENSE. Q#2 WHAT CAN I DO AT THIS STAGE? Q#3 WHAT CAN YOU DO AT THIS STAGE TO ENFORCE THIS?

- Summary: I PURCHASED A NEW 2012 ACURA WITH 20 MILES ON IT IN SEPT 2012. MY POWER STEERING WENT OUT IN APR 2015. I COULD NOT STEER THE VEHICLE GOING DOWN A WINDING ROAD. IT TOOK A LOT OF EFFORT JUST TO STEER IT SLIGHTLY. ACURA DEALERSHIP WHERE I BOUGHT IT WAS ABLE TO REPLACE THE POWER STEERING RACK AND CONTROL UNIT UNDER WARRANTY. ON 3/29/2019 I EXPERIENCED THE SAME ISSUE. THANKFULLY I WAS IN MY DRIVEWAY AT THE TIME. I TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF AND TURNED IT BACK ON A FEW MINUTES LATER. THE POWER STEERING ERROR CODE WENT OFF HOWEVER WHEN I STEERED THE VEHICLE WHICH IN PARK THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD MOVE TO THE LEFT OR RIGHT WITHOUT THE WHEEL TURNING. I THEN TURNED IT OFF FOR A WHILE AND TRIED AGAIN AND IT SEEMS TO WORK. HOWEVER, I AM NOT COMFORTABLE WITH THIS ISSUE AS IT IS A REAL SAFETY CONCERN WHILE DRIVING. I CALLED THE RECALL LINE FOR HONDA AND THEY SAID THERE IS NO RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE ON THIS MAKE AND MODEL. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID THE FIX THEY DID IN 2015 IS NOT UNDER WARRANTY.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with cars. Over the years, I've owned many different brands, including Pontiac, Chevy, Ford, and Lincoln. However, I eventually switched to Japanese cars and have been a big fan of Acura and Honda ever since. Recently, I had the opportunity to test drive some high-end sedans from various brands, including Acura, BMW, Lexus, Mercedes, Infiniti, and Audi. While I could afford any of them, I ultimately decided that the new 2012 style TL was the best choice for me, regardless of price. In my opinion, BMW was overpriced and not worth it, while Audi was a bit gutless. I found the quality of Infiniti and Lexus to be second-rate compared to Acura. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase and feel like I got the best value for my money. Thanks for listening!

I have been the owner of the TL 2012 Technology package for over a month now. The car is definitely sporty, yet comfortable and quiet. However, I was expecting more from a car that claims to be a Total Luxury Car. There are a few minor issues that I have noticed, such as not being able to rest my left hand on the door handle while driving, and the navigation system not displaying my current speed or the speed limit of the road. Despite these minor issues, I still find the car to be enjoyable to drive.

I traded in my 2008 Range Rover Supercharged for this car and it drives just as well, if not better than the Range. It also has better electronic features, is more reliable, and costs a third of the price. Overall, I am very happy with this good quality car!!!! P.S. The AWD handled better than any other car I have driven, including a Subaru and an Infiniti that I have driven in the past.

I am thrilled with this car! It is an excellent luxury car for a regular car price. I paid $32.7K + tax for the TL Tech and have driven it for 8k miles now without any problems at all. The car has plenty of power, is smooth and quiet, handles well, and has very comfortable seats. The stereo system is amazing too! The gas mileage is decent for a mid-sized luxury car, averaging 25 mpg overall in mixed driving and 28+ on long road trips. This car is an excellent choice for this price range. I paid about the same as I would have for a fully loaded Accord/Camry/Altima, but got a much nicer and sportier luxury car instead. I have no complaints whatsoever!

I purchased my 2012 Acura in 2014 and have enjoyed it for the most part. The leather seats, however, are quite delicate and can be easily damaged. Additionally, the navigation system could be more user-friendly and less frustrating if it were a touch screen. Over the past 5 years, I have only needed to perform regular maintenance on the brakes and tires. Overall, it has been a fun car to own. Now that it's paid off, I will need to look into getting the leather interior fixed. During a family trip to Water Country, my daughter's wet hair caused the back headrest to warp. Not long after that, I noticed the front seats starting to rip. As this was my first car with leather seats, I wasn't sure what to expect. The car is quite fast, but there is a slight delay when accelerating quickly. It's a great choice for petite or average-sized individuals, but may not be spacious enough for larger drivers or passengers. All in all, it strikes a great balance between sport and luxury sedan.

Although the car handles well and the seats are comfortable for long drives, there have been some issues with the navigation system, POI, and USB port. Despite attempts to fix the problem, the USB port continues to cause the screen to freeze or reset. Additionally, the transmission has been jerky and not as smooth as desired, particularly when shifting into 2nd gear. While these issues have been frustrating, they do not detract from the car's overall performance. It is important to note that these experiences may not be universal and may not reflect the quality of all Acura cars.

I bought this car brand new in 2012 and unfortunately had problems from the very beginning, especially with the build quality. I never really cared about how a car rides over bumps before, but this one was particularly bad. Despite this, the dealership was very nice and pleasant, which was a plus. The biggest issue with this car was the transmission, which was horrible and made me want a new car after only a year. It had a very noticeable jerk from first into second gear under everyday driving, almost like it shifted twice. I took it to the dealer several times and they did a flush change, software upgrades, and even changed the torque converter, but the problem persisted. Additionally, there were NUMEROUS rattles and creaks. After only 3 years and 40,000 miles, the front and rear end started making noise when passing over bumps. I guess they don't make them like they used to in Japan. I was very happy to get rid of this car and replace it with one that had a better ride and far superior build quality. Although I wanted a BMW, I usually put a lot of miles on my cars and had heard bad things about them, so I went with another Japanese car. Believe me, the BMW I replaced it with has not given me any problems and still has no rattles, even at 86,000 miles. I will never buy another Acura again.

During the year I have had this car, I have had to replace the battery, navigation system, stability, push ignition, and a bearing. Unfortunately, Acura's response was that there is nothing they can do. This is not what I expected from a brand new car. Additionally, the car does not sense when my mom is in the passenger seat, despite her weighing only 130 lbs. This is a big safety concern. I would not recommend this car!!!

I really like this car, but the GPS is driving me crazy. It keeps telling me that I'm on an unverified road, even though these streets have been here for over 30 years! It's so frustrating, especially when I'm on my cell phone or listening to music. I've been in touch with Ft. Wayne Acura, the dealership where I bought the car, and they've told me that Acura is aware of the issue and will fix it, but so far nothing has been done. I paid over $40K for this car, so I think it's reasonable to expect the GPS to work properly. It's also giving me some really strange directions, which is a bit worrying. I've never had any GPS problems with my other cars, including my Camry. Can you help me out here?

The TL is a fun car to drive and has a great design. However, after owning it for 6 months, I have noticed some cost-cutting measures that make the Acura less appealing to me. While none of these issues are deal breakers on their own, they do detract from my overall enjoyment of the TL. For example, the wheels on my 44k car are made of plastic, whereas the 2011 model had metal wheels that looked much better. Additionally, the bumpers on my white TL are a yellowish-white that don't match the body when it's cloudy outside (which I didn't notice when I bought the car on a sunny day). Finally, there are some miscellaneous quality issues, such as the chrome paint flaking off my key fob, the low-quality leather that is wearing quickly, and the back speakers that rattle. Despite these issues, I still enjoy driving my TL and would recommend it to others.
