The Acura TL is a car that was manufactured by Acura, the luxury division of Honda. First generation (UA1–UA3; 1996–1998)
The TL "Touring Luxury" debuted as 1996 model, first with the 1996 2.5 TL available with the 2.5 L 176 hp (131 kW) SOHC 20-valve 5-cylinder engine from the Vigor. The 3.2 TL used the 3.2 L 200 hp (149 kW) SOHC 24v V6 from the second generation Acura Legend. The model with the 2.0-liter inline-five was not offered in the US market. The debut of the TL signaled Acura's shift from traditional vehicle names to alphanumeric designations. By replacing recognizable names such as Vigor and Legend with a two-letter designation, the luxury maker hoped to focus consumer attention on the Acura name. The TL was the first Acura model to adopt the new naming scheme.
The 2.5 TL was positioned as the sporty model and the 3.2 focused more upon a luxurious ride. There were minimal styling differences between the two, but the 3.2 TL had larger tires despite the 2.5 TL's more sporty marketing. Moreover, the added power in the 3.2 TL gave it better acceleration. Both engines were mounted in a front-rear, or longitudinal position. This contrasted with the more typical transverse engine mount style, and was intended to provide better weight distribution and reduce nose dive. The engine mount design resulted in an elongated hood for the first generation TL, a shorter front overhang and longer wheelbase, fitting for a near-luxury car. The inline-5 engine in the 2.5 TL competed with similar 5-cylinder engines offered in Audi and Volvo models.
The first 1996 Acura TL was manufactured at Sayama, Japan on March 28, 1995. Sales of the 2.5 TL began in spring 1995, but the 3.2 TL was delayed until fall because of a U.S.-Japan trade dispute. The U.S. government had threatened to impose 100% tariffs on higher-priced Japanese cars in response a growing U.S.-Japan trade deficit. Ultimately a deal was reached which avoided the tariffs.
The first generation Acura TL had standard features including dual airbags, antilock brakes, automatic climate control, a cassette/CD player sound system, and power windows and locks. Leather was standard on the more upscale 3.2 TL, while the 2.5 TL featured a firmer suspension setup. Like its predecessor, the Vigor, this generation TL was a 4-door pillared hardtop, with frameless windows.

- Summary: CHECK POWER STEERING LIGHT STARTED FLICKERING WHEN BRAKING AT STOP LIGHT ABOUT TO TURN LEFT. IT WAS A HARD TURN BUT WHEN I STARTED TO ACCELERATE IT WENT AWAY, THEN AT THE STOP LIGHT IT STARTED TO FLICKER ON AND OFF AGAIN. MAKING ANOTHER LEFT TURN IT INTERMITTENTLY WENT ON AND OFF. PRETTY MUCH SAME STORY AS EVERYONE ELSE REGARDING STEERING. LUCKILY I BOUGHT EXTENDED WARRANTY. MILES WERE ONLY 69,500. NOW IT'S AT THE SHOP BEING CHECKED AND WILL STAY OVER NIGHT. THIS SAFETY ISSUE NEEDS TO BE RECALLED. ASAP

- Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2013 Acura ILX, 2015 RDX, 2005-2010 and 2012 RL, 2009-2014 TL, 2010 and 2012 ZDX, 2007-2011 CR-V, 2011-2013 and 2015 CR-Z, 2009-2013 Fit, 2013 Fit EV, 2010-2011 and 2013 Insight and 2007-2014 Ridgeline vehicles. These vehicles are equipped with driver frontal air bag inflators assembled as a recall remedy part or replacement service part, that may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.
- Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began August 12, 2019. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are S5B and W59.

- Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling specific 2003 Acura 3.2CL, 2013-2016 ILX, 2013-2014 ILX Hybrid, 2003-2006 MDX, 2007-2016 RDX, 2002-2003 3.2TL, 2004-2006, and 2009-2014 TL, 2010-2013 ZDX and 2001-2007 and 2009 Honda Accord, 2001-2005 Civic, 2003-2005 Civic Hybrid, 2001-2005 Civic GX NGV, 2002-2007 and 2010-2011 CR-V, 2003-2011 Element, 2007 Fit, 2002-2004 Odyssey, 2003-2008 Pilot, and 2006-2014 Ridgeline vehicles. The affected vehicles received a replacement driver air bag inflator as part of a previous Takata inflator recall remedy or a replacement driver air bag module containing the same inflator type as a service part. Due to a manufacturing error, in the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver frontal air bag, these inflators may explode.
- Consequence: An explosion of an inflator within the driver frontal air bag module may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver, front seat passenger or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's air bag inflator with an alternate inflator, free of charge. The recall began April 10, 2019. Honda owners may contact customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is O41. Acura owners may contact customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Acura's number for this recall is U40.

The affected vehicles are equipped with a dual-stage driver frontal air bag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion which, over time, could cause the inflator to rupture.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the inflator, free of charge. The recall began March 2017. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are JY0, JY1, and JY2.

The TL is a better car than the TSX in every aspect. It has a buttery smooth V6 and a roomier interior. I barely hit the gas and it sails to 50 mph with no effort. It is rated at 20/29 mpg, compared to my 09 TSX's 21/30. I gladly traded -1 mpg to have that extra power and size. The driver seat is a nice place to sit and I like how high the center console comes up, which lends to a more ergonomic position. I bought this car with 80,000 miles and the engine sounds brand new; I am not kidding. When I went to the dealer and started it for the first time I was pretty much sold right then and there. As this is an Acura, I expect this car to go well past 200,000 miles with no trouble. The only thing to keep in mind is the TL has a timing belt, which should be changed around 100,000-115,000 miles, along with the water pump. I don't mind this because the timing belt dampens engine vibrations, which results in a very smooth and quiet operation. Also, remember to replace the PCV valve every 60k- It's like a $25 dollar part that anyone can do themselves by going on youtube. This ensures there is no sludge build up in the engine and helps prevent oil burning. I can't believe I got all this car for $13,200!

I'm not sure if people are comparing this car to a Ferrari or to their 1974 Gremlin at times. However, for what this car was designed for, it is amazing. The comfort is superior, the lines are refined, and it corners like a race car. The get up and go is impressive and it definitely turns heads. While the stopping is quick and the MPG is average, the sound system could be improved. Overall, I love this car so much that I never want to get out of it!

I recently decided to try out the TL after driving BMWs for the past 6 years. I was pleasantly surprised by how it drives 'smaller' than it actually is. The SH-AWD handling is on par with most RWD German cars. Despite being the size of the 5/E/A6 class, it is priced cheaper than the 3/C/A4 class. The gas mileage so far is 25 mpg combined, which is not bad at all. Although the 'punch' off the line is not as immediate as the 335i I had, I still find it to be a great car overall. The only downside is that I miss some luxury touches such as rain sensing wipers, one touch triple turn signals, swiveling headlights, and auto dimming side mirrors. These are features that you grow to appreciate and really miss when you don't have them. However, I have no regrets on my purchase!

I drive this car and I really enjoy the experience. My ownership experience has been great, including style, comfort, and technology features such as GPS, traffic alerts, and keyless fob. The cost of ownership has also been reasonable. While there may be areas for improvement, I am not a race driver nor do I have tons of free time to play with all the possible options in the car, so I don't have any specific complaints. Overall, it's a fantastic car that always puts a smile on my face and provides great value for money in the long run.

I bought the car brand new in 2011. Unfortunately, I have been disappointed with several things. For instance, the center console armrest leather ripped after only 4 years with no real wear and tear. The dealer wanted $350 to replace it, so I did it myself for about $50. Additionally, the exterior chrome molding/gasket came loose on both sides and cost $400 to replace each. The passenger AC ducts became stuck in 1 position and I had to pay another $400 to fix them. There are 2 individual sides and now both sides have become stuck in 1 position again. The brake pads/rotors showed rust after 1 year, which was quite disappointing. Overall, I was disappointed in the quality of the car and I don't think I would purchase it again.

I bought this car brand new in 2012 and unfortunately had problems from the very beginning, especially with the build quality. I never really cared about how a car rides over bumps before, but this one was particularly bad. Despite this, the dealership was very nice and pleasant, which was definitely a plus. The biggest issue with this car was the transmission. It was horrible and made me want a new car after only a year. It had a very noticeable jerk from first into second gear under everyday driving, almost like it shifted twice. I took it to the dealer several times and they did a flush change, software upgrades, and even changed the torque converter, but the problem persisted. Additionally, there were NUMEROUS rattles and creaks. After only 3 years and 40,000 miles, the front and rear end started making noise when passing over bumps. I guess they don't make them like they used to in Japan. I was very happy to get rid of this car and replace it with one that had a better ride and far superior build quality. Although I wanted a BMW, I usually put a lot of miles on my cars and had heard bad things about them, so I went with another Japanese car. Believe me, the BMW I replaced it with has not given me any problems and still has no rattles, even though I'm now at 86,000 miles. I will never buy another Acura again.

During the year I have had this car, I have had to replace the battery, navigation system, stability, push ignition, and a bearing. Unfortunately, Acura's response was that there is nothing they can do. This is not what I expected from a brand new car. Additionally, the car does not sense when my mom is in the passenger seat, despite her weighing only 130 lbs. This is a big safety concern. I would not recommend this car!!!
