2013 Gmc Sierra 1500 problems
The Chevrolet Silverado is a range of trucks manufactured by General Motors under the Chevrolet brand. Introduced for the 1999 model year, the Silverado is the successor to the long-running Chevrolet C/K model line. Taking its name from the top trim level from the Chevrolet C/K series, the Silverado is offered as a series of full-size pickup trucks, chassis cab trucks, and medium-duty trucks. The fourth generation of the model line was introduced for the 2019 model year.
The Chevrolet Silverado shares mechanical commonality with the identically related GMC Sierra; GMC ended the use of the C/K nomenclature a model generation prior to Chevrolet. In Mexico, high-trim level versions of the Silverado use the Chevrolet Cheyenne name (not to be confused with the 2003 concept). Competing against the Ford F-Series, Ram Pickup, Toyota Tundra, and Nissan Titan, the Silverado is among the best-selling vehicles in the United States, having sold over 12 million trucks since its introduction in 1998 as a 1999 model year.
History
The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).
For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.
In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-01
- VIN: 3GTP2XE28DG
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I found out that the frame was rusted through beside the gas tank and was told there was a memo put out to the dealers that there was a problem with the frames not being coated properly and if the customer notice it they were to repair it. My truck was service regularly and undercoated regularly by the dealer the body is rust free but I am being told the frame is on safe and can't be repaired and GM will not make it right even though they knew there was a problem. I pull a travel trailer and if the frame was to break in half I am sure someone would be seriously hurt or killed.
SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-16
- VIN: 1GTR2VE73DZ
- Components: SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I hit a bump and both rear shock mounts blew off the rear cross member because the frame is rusted out despite having rust protection. It is available for inspection. The truck then began bouncing wildly. Meanwhile the underside of the bed isn't rusted at all, not one speck. It just seems weird to me, reminds me of the Toyota frame problems from a while back. It has not been inspected by a mechanic or insurance, my insurance company didn't seem to care in the slightest. I have had traction control and abs warnings on for a while but my mechanic said that was a faulty tire sensor.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-22
- VIN: 3GTP2VE73DG
- Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
- Summary: Rear half of Frame Crossmembers rotted away between the Frame rails. Took vehicle in for routine safety inspection, and the mechanic determined that the cross members to which the rear shocks and the Gas tank were attached had both broken free from the frame rails due to rust. The entire back end of the vehicle is suspended from the frame with only the leaf spring mounts. This rust is excessive and far exceeds the rust on other points on the frame and undercarriage of the vehicle.

Your 2012 GMC work truck has been very dependable, serving not only as a work truck but also as a daily driver.
-
I bought this truck with 98,000 miles on it and have put about 22,000 more miles on it since acquisition. It's been a great ride so far! Not a single drop of oil burned and it runs even better than my previous 2006 Chevy Avalanche. I'm hoping to keep it for another ten or twenty years. The AFM listed on the window sticker, as all 5.3s did in 2012, is a great feature. I can't even tell when it changes, only when the tranny changes when driving away. It has all the power I need and more, and it gets about 16 or 17 MPG on average. I'm extremely happy with this truck and I got a great price on it. I did a lot of searching and praying before I bought it, and I'm glad I did. To all GM truck owners, good luck and happy driving!
-
I see that you've owned an '08, '13, and now a '16, all of which were 5.3L four-wheel-drive crew cabs. It's unfortunate to hear that the six-speed in the 2013 model didn't perform as well as you had hoped. It seemed to always be lugging the engine and making uncomfortable six-to-four downshifts when you needed some power. Additionally, it had lower gas mileage than even your '08 with the four-speed. However, I'm glad to hear that everything else was great, including the reliability.
-
Great all around vehicle! It's perfect for towing or just using as an everyday work vehicle.
-
I purchased this truck brand new almost a decade ago and it has been absolutely flawless with only one minor repair - the window switch. I did choose to upgrade the shocks to bilsteins about 10k miles ago, but that was simply a personal preference as the stock shocks were still in good condition. Additionally, I disabled AFM via a tune when it was new, just to be safe. However, it has not burned a drop of oil and has held up exceptionally well in all aspects over the years. Although I feel it may be time for a new truck, I cannot find enough reasons to part with this one. Perhaps I will consider a 2022 Sierra after they refresh the current body style, and I may even opt for a 6.2 or 3.0. Thank you for considering my thoughts!

Drum brakes! List price 38k + and I got drum brake on the rear-end. Maybe they could improve the safety rating by putting disc brakes all the way around. It would be great to have better brakes on this truck!

Be careful when towing a 16 ft cargo open 3ft trailer as there may be issues with the ignition steering column. The day before I was due to move my personal belongings, the truck started having electrical problems. Despite this, I had to move the trailer or risk losing my belongings. As I was about to hook up the trailer, the truck lost complete power in reverse. I tried to turn the wheel but the column was locked, and the key was stuck in the ignition. After several attempts to start the truck, the starter kicked on and kept grinding. The steering was still locked, and the truck was in park. When I put the gear in reverse, the truck took off forward with the steering locked towards a retaining wall. Despite pressing the emergency brake, the truck was still heading towards the wall. I managed to pull on the steering wheel, but it broke off the turn signal arm in the process. The truck hit the wall and shut down. It was a scary experience, but thankfully no one was hurt.

My parents experienced a dangerous situation while driving on I95 this weekend from FL to VA. The truck's door locks, lights, and operating system malfunctioned, causing the engine, power steering, power brakes, and other systems to shut down. Despite their fear, they managed to safely continue their journey. Upon taking the truck to the dealer, my father was informed that the 'positive post' had come loose, which he found hard to believe since he had personally checked the battery posts that week. This raises concerns about the safety of GMC vehicles and the possibility of cover-ups.

The paint on the roof of the vehicle is peeling, but it is important to note that GM does not cover paint after 3 years. Additionally, the engine experiences some shaking at idle and bad vibrations at highway speeds. However, I was able to fix the shaking idle by replacing the motor mounts.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my truck. I've had it for 2 years now and it's been really comfortable. However, I've noticed that when it comes to heavy-duty tasks, like towing a vintage camper and a 4x4 4 wheeler, it struggles a bit. Even with synthetic oil changes every 5,000 miles, it overheats when trying to pull a hill at 45 mph. Additionally, I had to reinstall the door bumper guards at 37,000 miles. Overall, it's a great truck for everyday use, but for heavy-duty tasks, I think I might prefer my old Silverado. Thanks for listening!
