First generation (YD1; 2001)
Derived from Honda's Global mid-size platform which underpins cars like the Honda Accord, Acura TL, TSX and Odyssey, it is powered by a J35A3 3.5 L SOHC 24 valve V6 engine with VTEC. Curb weight is 4,451 lb (2,019 kg), with a 106.3 in (2,700 mm) wheelbase and 8 in (200 mm) of ground clearance. The cargo floor can flip up to provide two additional seats. The vehicle is designed to hold 7 passengers, but the third row seats are small and only seat two, in contrast to the Odyssey and Pilot whose third row holds three passengers.
The vehicle features an automatic four wheel drive system (named VTM-4) that engages during off the line acceleration as well as when wheel slippage is detected. Additionally, the system offers a lock mode which can be activated and operated at low speeds and provides permanent 4WD and the equivalent of a locked rear differential; designed for climbing steep hills and getting out of stuck situations. To reduce drivetrain noise and increase fuel efficiency, the system runs as front wheel drive during normal cruising. The VTM-4 AWD system in the MDX has the same design as the VTM-4 systems found in the Honda Pilot and Honda Ridgeline. It is different than Honda's "RealTime AWD" system in the Honda CR-V and other models in that it can lock and it attempts to predict when traction will be lost and apply power to all four wheels before slippage occurs (by monitoring throttle inputs).
The navigation system and DVD entertainment system (also popular on other Honda/Acura models, such as the CR-V and Odyssey) options were mutually exclusive in the 2002 model. Both could be ordered at the same time since the 2003 model. The navigation option comes with a backup camera since the 2003 model. Since 2005, the navigation system featured information from Zagat about restaurants and other points of interest. The 2003 model was rated as Ultra Low Emission Vehicle. The first two model years' 3.5-liter V6 engine produces 240 hp (179 kW) and 245 lb⋅ft (332 N⋅m) of torque from 3000 to 5000 rpm. For the 2003 model, the engine was improved to produce 20 hp (15 kW) more power than the earlier models, and the wheel designs were updated. The 2004 through 2006 engine received a modest increase in power and produces 265 hp (198 kW) and 253 lb⋅ft (343 N⋅m). The 2004 model is credited with a top speed of 137 mph, and a 0-60 time of 7.1 seconds. The 2004 model features dual tail pipes instead of the single pipe in earlier models, side curtain airbags, new head lights and tail lights, and new wheels. Some chrome trimmings on the 2004 model use matte finish to distinguish from the polished shiny finish on earlier models. Little changed for the MDX during the 2006 model year with a few minor revisions to the vehicle's chrome and faux wood interior trim which could now be had with a dark grey wood (as opposed to reddish wood on earlier models), and also a black dash and steering wheel in tan interiors.

- Summary: The contact's wife owned a 2010 Acura MDX. The contact stated that while parked in his garage, the passenger's low beam headlamp was removed after it stopped illuminating. The contact observed then observed the driver's low beam heal lamp blinking. The contact stated after 10 minutes, he and his family observed a smokey odor in the house and retreated to the garage to inspect the origin of the odor. The contact then observed flames emanating from the passenger headlamp. The fire spread and within 45 minutes the entire house was engulfed in flames and the vehicle remained trapped under a collapsed roof. The fire was extinguished by the Fire Department and a police report was filed. The Fire Inspector determined that the fire originated from the vehicle. There were no injuries. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 240,000.

- Summary: This is in reference to Acura Service Bulletin 14-032, Rear Side Body Plug is missing. Both my right and left side body plugs were missing, causing myself and family to experience symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning for at least a year. I had the exhaust system checked by Acura and and independent garage and they found no issues. I would not have know about the cause if I had not found it in a chat thread in an Acura online community. All owners need to be notified. THIS SHOULD BE A MANDATORY SAFETY RECALL for Acura MDX for 2010-2013.

WITHIN ABOUT 50 MILES, ALL OF THE OTHER WARNING LIGHTS COMING ON IN SUCCESSION. THERE WAS NO SHOULDER OR AREA TO PULL ON THIS SECTION OF HIGHWAY NEAR MONO LAKE AND WITHIN 30 SECONDS THE CAR LOST ALL POWER AND ALL THE LIGHTS WENT OUT. I TRIED TO TURN ON THE EMERGENCY FLASHERS AND THEY WOULDN'T WORK. ACCORDING TO THE RECALL LETTER THAT ACURA SENT OUT TO OTHER PEOPLE, THEY CALL IT A TRANSMISSION JUDDER. I AM CALLING A NEW DEALERSHIP FOR AN APPOINTMENT AND PLAN ON MAKING A MECHANIC RIDE WITH ME TO PROVE WHAT'S GOING ON. I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS. YOUR SYSTEM WANTS ME TO ENTER A DATE FOR THEN THIS HAPPENED. IT BEGAN IN OCTOBER OF 2009, HAS BEEN ONGOING, AND HAS GOTTEN WORSE. THE CAR HAD 21 MILES ON IT WHEN I DROVE IT OFF THE LOT. NOW IT HAS 120,000+. THE ISSUES BEING ON ACCELERATION AND CONTINUES UNTIL AT LEAST 60MPH, EVEN AT HIGHER SPEEDS IF I TAKE MY FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR IN TRAFFIC OR TRY TO GO UP A HILL UNTIL THE NEXT GEAR KICKS IN BECAUSE IT IS SLUGGISH WHEN YOU PRESS THE ACCELERATOR DOWN EVEN TO THE FLOORBOARD.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURES AND DID NOT ASSIST DUE TO THE EXPIRED WARRANTY. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 108,000. *BF*JB

I HAD PURCHASED MY ONE OWNER 2010 MDX ADVANCE OVER A YEAR BEFORE, BUT ALMOST IMMEDIATELY AFTER PURCHASE FOUND THE REAR COULD NOT BE ALIGNED PROPERLY...THIS AFTER 3-4 ALIGNMENTS & NOTICED MY NEW MICHELIN TIRES WERE WEARING NOTCHED. WELL UPON FINDING OUT ABOUT THE ABOVE DEFECT & ALSO FINDING THE PRICE TO REPLACE THESE 4 ELECTONIC MAGNETIC SHOCKS WERE IN THE $2500 BALLPARK FOR PARTS, PLUS LABOR ADDITIONALLY, AS A 72 YR. OLD MARINE CORPS VETERAN W/LIMITED INCOME, I WAS IN A STATE OF SHOCK UPON FINDING FURTHER THAT ACURA REFUSED TO REPLACE THESE DIRECTLY SAFETY RELATED EXPENSIVE SHOCK ABSORBERS EVEN THOUGH THEY STATED IN LETTER THEY WOULD REPLACE EVEN WITH MULTIPLE PREVIOUS OWNERS. MY MILEAGE WAS JUST OVER THEIR IMPOSED LIMITATIONS & WOULD NOT BRING THE VEHICLE TO SAFETY STANDARDS EVEN THOUGH I ASKED & APPEALED AS A LONG TIME HONDA/ACURA CUSTOMER. SO THESE TOTALLY UNSAFE SUSPENSION PARTS ARE STILL ON MY ACURA. FURTHERMORE ON 1/6/19 I HIT A SLIGHT BUMP ON AN INTERSTATE HWY AT ABOUT THE 70MPH SPEED LIMIT. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT NOTICED SPARKS COMING FROM THE STEERING WHEEL. ON THE THIRD ATTEMPT TO START THE VEHICLE, IT FAILED TO OPERATE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN UNKNOWN DEALER, BUT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 99,200. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED AND THE BODY DAMAGE WAS REPAIRED; HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000.

- Summary: MY WIFE WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE ON A STATE ROAD. WHILE MAKING A LEFT TURN FROM THE LEFT LANE THE KEY BLADE SEPARATED FROM THE KEY FOB AND FELL TO THE FLOOR. THE KEY FOB HAS A ENGINE IMMOBILIZER AND WHEN IT FELL THE ENGINE SHUT OFF. WITH NO POWER STEERING OR BRAKES THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT TURN PROPERLY WHICH CAUSED IT TO GO STRAIGHT INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE IN THE RIGHT TURN LANE. I FEEL THIS IS A SAFETY DEFECT OF THE KEY DESIGN. THE KEY BLADE POPS OPEN FROM THE FOB AND GETS LOOSE AS TIME GOES BY. THE MANUFACTURER'S POSITION IS THIS IN NOT A DEFECT BUT NORMAL WEAR. A $50,000 VEHICLE LESS THAN SIX YEARS OLD SHOULD NOT HAVE THIS PROBLEM. ESPECIALLY WHEN IT CAN BREAK ANYTIME AND CAUSE A ACCIDENT LIKE MY WIFE HAD.

- Consequence: IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH RESULTING IN SIDE CURTAIN AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT, THE TRIM PIECE MAY NOT REMAIN PROPERLY SECURED TO THE A-PILLAR, INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURY TO THE DRIVER AND/OR FRONT SEAT PASSENGER.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE INTERIOR TRIM PIECE OF THE A-PILLAR AND IF A BOLT IS MISSING IT WILL BE INSTALLED FREE OF CHARGE. FOUR VEHICLES WERE PURCHASED BEFORE THE STOP-SALE WAS ISSUED AND ALL THE VEHICLES HAVE BEEN INSPECTED AND REPAIRED IF NECESSARY.

Purchase my 2010 MDX Tech/Ent and without any doubt it is the best handling SUV on the market. The new auto shift is smooth and makes the vehicle that much more responsive. The 2010s are much more quiet and upgrades to the technology are amazing. The stereo motivates you to drive more and the seats and active restraints are so much more comfortable. It truly is a stunning SUV.

I picked up this car 2 weeks ago and I absolutely love it! Although it's still early in my ownership experience, I haven't had any problems yet. I've read some comments about the dashboard being cluttered with buttons, but I haven't had any issues and I find everything easy to operate and understand. I purchased the Advance package with White Pearl exterior and Umber interior, and it's beautiful! It's so much fun to drive, and the acceleration is swift and exhilarating! I'm looking forward to many happy years with my new baby!

This vehicle is really enjoyable to drive. Although the mileage is not great, I am getting 16 in the city and 18 for mixed driving, and the car is not yet broken in. I was pleasantly surprised that the mileage wasn't worse during the break-in period. The NAV system and other tech features are great, but the buttons can be confusing. However, the Bluetooth hands-free phone feature and NAV voice commands are easy to use. The sound system sounds fantastic, and the iPod link works seamlessly. The backup camera, with a choice of three different views, is a very nice feature.
