The Acura MDX is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV with three-row seating produced by the Japanese automaker Honda under its luxury Acura division since 2000. The alphanumeric moniker stands for "Multi-Dimensional" luxury. It has ranked as the second-best selling mid-size luxury SUV after the Lexus RX in the U.S.

The MDX is the first luxury crossover SUV to have standard third-row seating, and shares its platform with the Honda Pilot. The Pilot was made available with an eight person seating configuration, while the MDX exclusively seats seven, with two seating positions in the third row. The MDX was introduced on October 5, 2000 as a 2001 model, replacing the slow-selling U.S.-only body-on-frame SLX, based on the Isuzu Trooper. In Japan, it was made to replace the Honda Horizon (also based on the Trooper) which was discontinued in 1999. In 2003, the vehicle went on sale in Japan and Australia as the Honda MDX; sales with Honda badges ended with the introduction of the second generation three years later.

First generation (YD1; 2001)

Derived from Honda's Global mid-size platform which underpins cars like the Honda Accord, Acura TL, TSX and Odyssey, it is powered by a J35A3 3.5 L SOHC 24 valve V6 engine with VTEC. Curb weight is 4,451 lb (2,019 kg), with a 106.3 in (2,700 mm) wheelbase and 8 in (200 mm) of ground clearance. The cargo floor can flip up to provide two additional seats. The vehicle is designed to hold 7 passengers, but the third row seats are small and only seat two, in contrast to the Odyssey and Pilot whose third row holds three passengers.

The vehicle features an automatic four wheel drive system (named VTM-4) that engages during off the line acceleration as well as when wheel slippage is detected. Additionally, the system offers a lock mode which can be activated and operated at low speeds and provides permanent 4WD and the equivalent of a locked rear differential; designed for climbing steep hills and getting out of stuck situations. To reduce drivetrain noise and increase fuel efficiency, the system runs as front wheel drive during normal cruising. The VTM-4 AWD system in the MDX has the same design as the VTM-4 systems found in the Honda Pilot and Honda Ridgeline. It is different than Honda's "RealTime AWD" system in the Honda CR-V and other models in that it can lock and it attempts to predict when traction will be lost and apply power to all four wheels before slippage occurs (by monitoring throttle inputs).

The navigation system and DVD entertainment system (also popular on other Honda/Acura models, such as the CR-V and Odyssey) options were mutually exclusive in the 2002 model. Both could be ordered at the same time since the 2003 model. The navigation option comes with a backup camera since the 2003 model. Since 2005, the navigation system featured information from Zagat about restaurants and other points of interest. The 2003 model was rated as Ultra Low Emission Vehicle. The United States Environmental Protection Agency estimates 23 mpg‑US (10 L/100 km; 28 mpg‑imp) highway and 17 mpg‑US (14 L/100 km; 20 mpg‑imp) city.

The first two model years' 3.5-liter V6 engine produces 240 hp (179 kW) and 245 lb⋅ft (332 N⋅m) of torque from 3000 to 5000 rpm. For the 2003 model, the engine was improved to produce 20 hp (15 kW) more power than the earlier models, and the wheel designs were updated. The 2004 through 2006 engine received a modest increase in power and produces 265 hp (198 kW) and 253 lb⋅ft (343 N⋅m). The 2004 model is credited with a top speed of 137 mph, and a 0-60 time of 7.1 seconds. The 2004 model features dual tail pipes instead of the single pipe in earlier models, side curtain airbags, new head lights and tail lights, and new wheels. Some chrome trimmings on the 2004 model use matte finish to distinguish from the polished shiny finish on earlier models. Little changed for the MDX during the 2006 model year with a few minor revisions to the vehicle's chrome and faux wood interior trim which could now be had with a dark grey wood (as opposed to reddish wood on earlier models), and also a black dash and steering wheel in tan interiors.

Common 2014 Acura Mdx problems

The 2014 Acura MDX has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. One major issue is engine troubles, which were also prevalent in the 2016 model.

Another problem reported by 2014 Acura MDX owners is a malfunctioning climate system. This issue is similar to the one experienced by 2008 MDX owners, where the problem was a leak because the compression hose rubbed against the vehicle’s grounding surface.

Stalling or lurching is another source of headache for MDX owners. Reports stated that this usually happens between speeds of 35 and 45 mph. Acura advises owners to replace the faulty VCM rocker to address the issue.

In addition to these problems, the 2014 Acura MDX has also been reported to have issues with poor acceleration or hesitation. This problem was particularly prevalent in the 2016 and 2017 models, where owners experienced troubles with their transmission and had issues with poor/jerky acceleration. This issue would gradually get worse until they couldn’t get their vehicle to move.

The 2014 Acura MDX also has a problem with stalling or lurching on light acceleration. Affected owners say that this problem is even more noticeable when they’re trying to maintain a speed between 35 and 45 mph. This issue is said to first occur at around 28,000 miles, and there are no TSBs or recalls that address this specific issue.

Lastly, the 2014 Acura MDX has been reported to have issues with excessive oil consumption. This problem was particularly prevalent in the 2010 and 2011 models, where owners spent an average of $6,800 to have this issue fixed.

In summary, the 2014 Acura MDX has several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues include engine troubles, malfunctioning climate system, stalling or lurching, poor acceleration or hesitation, and excessive oil consumption. It is important for potential buyers to be aware of these issues and consider them when making a purchasing decision.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-10
  • VIN: 5FRYD4H46EB
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: Recall (M49) Moisture may enter the tailgate lid lights, possibly causing a loss of the tailgate lid lights and the taillights. Acura dealership confirmed repair back in 2019. I am currently having the same issue with the loss of my taillight. I raised concern with Acura and they confirmed that they release me part number that they didn’t use for the initial repair, which leads me to believe this issue was never fixed. The dealership then told me that they would not be able to repair this issue unless I had an extended warranty. I am requesting a review as this is a major safety issue and a traffic citation concern on the same grounds that the M49 recall was initiated.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-23
  • VIN: 5FRYD4H42EB
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: The white paint on the roof of my car peeled off in huge chunks between the sunroof and the windshield. Acura had extended the warranty on the paint to 8 years from the date in service and ours was fine at the deadline. However, now at 11 years in, the paint has completely failed. It appears that there are a large number of other Acura owners who are having issues with the paint on their white MDXs, and Acura is in some cases saying that their VIN numbers are not included. It is an obvious problem with the white paint since Acura issued the warranty extension, but the limit was arbitrary and it is ridiculous that a "luxury" SUV has peeling paint that will result in an expensive repair job.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-01
  • VIN: 5FRYD4H26EB
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: My vehicle was part of a recall and Acura extended warranty protection for the paint between the windshield and sunroof. This was a manufacturer defect with the paint when the car was made. It did not happen to my car until October 2023 and Acura will not fix the paint due to end of the warranty extension that was issued by NHTSA. I was told to contact you from Acura corporate. They said the regulation to not cover any vehicles with this paint issue, was coming from NHTSA. The paint was applied incorrectly when the car was made and it’s causing a big circle of paint to randomly come off of the area of the car between the windshield and sunroof. I’m concerned the paint will continue to chip away and start coming off in large pieces. This is a manufacturer defect and should not be time limited.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-16
  • VIN: 5FRYD4H49EB
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Paint. Delaminating at the sealer. Paint flakes randomly fall off car over the years. Acura verified this was a factory defect and the common area is occurred was the roof. This was covered for my car 03.2019 under an extended warranty but was only limited to the roof. I specifically asked to fix the whole paint job since this was a FACTORY defect and they stated they will only fix the area with the current damage. Well now time has passed and this has now happened on my left passenger door and Acura will not cover any part of fixing their factory defect. Terrible on Acura for selling a product they know has a FACTORY defect and they will not stand by their product.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-10-03
  • VIN: 5FRYD3H46EB
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: There is a known issue of Certain Acura MDX models having a "judder" (i.e. bouncing rev counter) at certain speeds. This causes the torque converter to not lockup and continue to find the right gear, per se. This is a known issue and Acura has a TSB (16-062) for this: https://www.tsbsearch.com/Acura/16-062 The issue is, even though, unaddressed in a timely manner and continual use of the vehicle may deteriorate the transmission, Acura doesn't fix this free of charge for vehicles not under warranty. Dealer quotes $800+ for a total 1.6 hours of work (based on the TSB bulletin). This is outrageous and monopolistic behavior in a free market. Moreover, typical mechanics doesn't have access to the special computers needed to perform the software update, required by this TSB. I am reaching out to request Acura (Car manufacturer) to cover this under recall and not charge the customer this ridiculous ~$400/hr labor rate just because I can't update the software from a local mechanic.

STEERING,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-01
  • VIN: 5FRYD3H88EB
  • Components: STEERING,LANE DEPARTURE
  • Summary: On numerous occasions the Electric Power Steering, Lane Departure Warning, and Lane Keeping Assist problem lights illuminate on the dash and I lose all power steering. My car becomes extremely difficult to turn, particularly at lower speeds. This is a major safety hazard and warrants a recall. Had my wife been driving when this occurred she would not be able to turn the vehicle. This has happened on several occasions over the past 2 weeks. The car is being taken to the dealership tomorrow. Note: it appears that Acura and Honda have extended the warranty on several models for a similar issue, but not the 2014 Acura MDX.
2022-04-27

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-02-01
  • VIN: 5FRYD4H29EB
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Transmission surges when shifting between 1st gear to 2nd, feels like rear ended, the whole car jumps. Acura of America seems to not have a fix for this issue that a lots of 3rd generation ACURA MDX owners suffer from . Acura dealership only suggestion is transmission fluid flush, which is not a real fix for the transmission jump that can cause a serious accident while operating the vehicle in traffic. Acura Of America is aware of this issue but !!! No safety recall been addressed.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-02-28

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-09-19
  • VIN: 5fryd4h47eb
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: The outside rear taillight was FULL of water. I discovered this when going to replace bulbs I thought were just burned out. In fact one of the bulbs was shattered I presume from the water reaching the hot light. The taillight is non functional and I will have to take it to be repaired/replaced. I should not have to pay for what is very clearly an manufacturer defect that compromises safe vehicle operations. Acura did a recall for the interior tail light for this same issue, but did not include the outer taillight. A simple google search shows this is not an isolated incident but rather a major problem.

  • VIN: 5FRYD4H46EB
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: Went out with family recently and all of a sudden front passenger side seat belt buckle won't latch. I took it to the dealer (Pohanka Acura). They said seat belt buckle has to be replaced and it will cost approx. $1000. I called Acura and they said this is not a warranty issue. Car is only 7 years old and front passenger side is used only occasionally by an adult. I would like Acura to pay for the replacement of my seat belt buckle.

  • VIN: 5FRYD3H28EB
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I HAD THIS 2014 ACURA MDX FOR 4YR SINCE 2016 AS CPO AT LOCAL ACURA DEALER. SINCE 2YRS AGO, MY RPM DO NOT CLIMB STEADY AND IT IS JUMPING UP AND DOWN ,ESPECIALLY AT THE SPEED BETWEEN 40 TO 60. I THOUGHT IT IS JUST TRANSMISSION FLUID ISSUE. ONCE I REPLACED TRANSMISSION FLUID REPLACED, LEVEL OF FLUCTUATION BECAME LESS THAN PREVIOUS. BUT AFTER COUPLE MONTH LATER, IT IS STILL SAME. I AM WONDERING THIS ISSUE IS KNOWN FOR ANY ACURA MDX OWNER MANUFACTURED IN SAME PERIOD. I THINK THIS COULD BE SOFTWARE ISSUE RATHER THAN MECHANICAL ISSUE AND SHOULD BE RECALLED TO BE REPAIRED OR UPDATED. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE ANY CLAIM SAME AS WHAT I AM EXPERIENCING. THANKS FOR YOUR TIME AND SINCERE SUPPORT.

  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: WHILE PARALLEL PARKING, THE POWER STEERING STOPPED WORKING (CAR WAS STOPPED OR GOING <3 MPH). IT WAS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO TURN THE WHEEL. NO WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON. I CHECKED TO BE SURE NOTHING WAS STUCK IN THE WHEEL WELLS OR OTHERWISE BLOCKING THE TIRES. AFTER PULLING OUT OF THE PARKING SPOT, POWER STEERING RETURNED TO NORMAL. IT HAPPENED AGAIN WHEN RE-TRYING TO PARALLEL PARK, BUT THEN POWER CAME BACK TO NORMAL. I HAVEN'T TAKEN IT TO THE DEALER YET. IT STARTED ALL OF THE SUDDEN TODAY AND APPEARS TO HAVE RESOLVED SPONTANEOUSLY. BUT I WORRY THAT IT WILL RETURN, PERHAPS LEADING TO AN ACCIDENT.

  • Remedy: Honda has notified owners, and dealers will replace the driver and front passenger seat belts, free of charge. The recall began in November 2014. Owners may contact Acura customer service at 1-800-382-2238. Honda's number for this recall is JK7 for the MKX, and JK8 for the RLX.

It seems like there are a few areas that could use some improvement. The voice control feature may not be functioning properly, and the fit and finish of the vehicle may not be up to par. Additionally, it appears that the door may be out of alignment and the steering may need an update. There also seems to be a squeaking noise in the engine that may require a shim kit. The infotainment system may not be the best, as it locks you out of basic functions while driving and the navigation system is not very user-friendly. Lastly, the audio quality may not be the best and it seems that you have had to replace the batteries multiple times in the past few years. However, with the right attention and care, these issues can be resolved to ensure a smoother driving experience.

Please note that some models do not come with a spare tire, and instead have a tire inflator/gel. Unfortunately, I learned this the hard way. When I had a puncture larger than a nail, what should have been a 15-minute tire change turned into a 5-hour ordeal. Acura insisted that I have the car towed to a dealership, but what if I had been on a road trip with no Acura dealership nearby? It's important to keep this in mind, as Acura roadside service will only tow to an Acura dealership. If you choose not to tow to a dealership, you will be responsible for the cost of towing. Considering the cost of the car, which is nearly 50K, it would be reasonable to expect a spare tire or donut. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

We recently purchased a 2014 Acura MDX 2WD. While we have noticed that the ride can be a bit harsh and noisy over bumps, we have found that this is due to the light suspension and rear end. If you don't mind a bit of bounce and some thumping noises, you should be fine. Our dealer even suggested trying out a 50lb bag of dog food to help quiet things down. We have also noticed some resistance when the engine downshifts. However, we were disappointed to find out that the dealer, Gary Force Acura in Brentwood Tennessee, had misled us by putting us in an AWD model during our test drives. We had thought we were purchasing a much smoother and quieter vehicle. Despite these issues, we still believe that this vehicle is a decent option for the price, but there may be better options available.

I recently updated my review of the Acura MDX I purchased as a new car in 2014. Unfortunately, I am unable to remove the single star rating. I would have preferred to rate my Acura MDX experience at an even lower level, based entirely on poor customer service that I received from Acura. I have found their corporate attitude to be consistently non-responsive and uncaring. The dealership from which I purchased my ACURA closed shortly after my purchase, yet ACURA corporate insists I travel 2+ hours for performance of any and all factory recall needs, even though the local HONDA service department tells me they are able to replace recalled parts in mere minutes if ACURA would authorize the work. Unfortunately, ACURA has refused to do so. As an owner of an Acura MDX, I must express my extreme disappointment with Acura's customer service (or lack thereof!). Even though the dealer from whom I bought my car lost its contract with Acura, Acura never contacted me to advise as to where I should take the vehicle for warranty work. As noted, the nearest Acura dealer is a 2+ hour (one way) drive for me, but the certified Honda dealer is only 10 minutes away. As to the defective part, Acura sent me a recall notice informing me it needed to be replaced. The Honda dealer tells me they can do the work, but Acura will cover and authorize this work only with prior authorization. Unfortunately, Acura denied authorization, which thus required me to undertake a 4-hour round trip to effect this recall. It took Acura 4 weeks and multiple calls on my part to decide my request to deal with the Honda dealer would be denied. Unfortunately, Acura never once returned my call. As a further point of irony, Acura did send me a letter to wish me a As a postscript, I wanted to share my experience with the Pearl White paint. Unfortunately, it blistered and peeled, but thankfully it was covered under warranty. Although it did require me to make two 4-hour return trips to get the work done, my friendly Honda dealership was able to take care of it. However, I have noticed major fogging on the cover-glass (plastic?) for both headlights. I will need to make another trip to get this fixed, but I am confident that my Honda dealership will be able to help me out once again. If you are considering purchasing an ACURA, I hope that your experience is better than mine. While I am hesitant to give ACURA a second chance, I wish you the best of luck!

Hello! I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with the car I recently purchased. Unfortunately, during a long road trip, I encountered some issues with dashboard rattles and intermittent grating noise under light acceleration. Despite visiting the dealer three times, the dash noises have improved but not been completely eliminated, and the grating noise remains. The dealer has informed me that this is a known issue with no current solution. As a result, I am quite disappointed with my purchase and would advise potential buyers to consider other options. Thank you for taking the time to read my message.

The driving experience of the '14 MDX is quite different from the '13 model. In comfort mode, it feels like a Lexus RX300, while in sport mode, the suspension and steering tighten up, making it stiffer than the '13 MDX. The 'Normal' mode is a perfect balance between the two. The power is impressive and smooth, especially considering it has only 290 horsepower. Acura claims it is faster than the '13 model. Getting in and out of the back seats, including the third row, is a breeze. The mileage is excellent for a vehicle of this size, with at least 26mpg on the highway and around 18mpg in the city. My complaints about the car are minor. Visibility through the C and D pillars is not good, and the backup camera is not great, especially at night. The technology in the stereo, navigation, Bluetooth, etc., is impressive, but not intuitive. Some simple tasks like changing the fan speed require two or three inputs. The car deactivates some sophisticated NAV and music features and requires you to use voice commands when driving, which can be frustrating when the voice recognition misunderstands. However, there are workarounds. Acura/Honda really needs to update this system. Despite these minor issues, I am still pleased with my purchase. However, I would not buy a new MDX unless I was certain the infotainment tech was completely new.

This SUV is perfect for families or couples who want a vehicle that meets a variety of needs. It offers comfort for long trips, plenty of space for passengers and kids and their friends, the ability to transport a 4x8 sheet of plywood, and a fantastic navigation and entertainment center.

I buy a lot of cars for myself and my wife. This is my 4th MDX in 7 years. I tried an Enclave, but the seats and steering were terrible. I had a MKX for 9000, but traded it because the steering had torque steel when you punched the gas. My wife has driven an Audi, a Cayanne, an X5, a Range Rover, and more, but dollar for dollar, the MDX is the best value for us. It's quiet, quick, and has very comfortable seats.

I was pleasantly surprised by the excellent fuel economy of this car, regularly exceeding the mpg rating. Even at 60-70 mph with light throttle, I was able to achieve 30-32 mpg, which is comparable to hybrid-like fuel economy. In terms of active safety, the handling and braking are crucial, and this car delivers. However, it was disappointing that the 19

Update! The initial review was done way too soon after the purchase. I dumped the Acura late 2015 due to way too many small issues with it. But hello Lexus! I am much happier now. Another update! As of 6-24-18, I still love my 2017 RX350 F Sport. Initially, I bought a GS 350 sedan to replace the MDX but soon realized that we missed an SUV. I am very impressed with the quality and feel of Lexus, so we opted for the RX and don't regret it. It seems like if one wants to stay with a Honda product, well... the Honda seems to be more technologically advanced and is a much better value than Acura in my opinion.
