2011 Acura Mdx problems
The Acura MDX is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV with three-row seating produced by the Japanese automaker Honda under its luxury Acura division since 2000. The alphanumeric moniker stands for "Multi-Dimensional" luxury. It has ranked as the second-best selling mid-size luxury SUV after the Lexus RX in the U.S.
The MDX is the first luxury crossover SUV to have standard third-row seating, and shares its platform with the Honda Pilot. The Pilot was made available with an eight person seating configuration, while the MDX exclusively seats seven, with two seating positions in the third row. The MDX was introduced on October 5, 2000 as a 2001 model, replacing the slow-selling U.S.-only body-on-frame SLX, based on the Isuzu Trooper. In Japan, it was made to replace the Honda Horizon (also based on the Trooper) which was discontinued in 1999. In 2003, the vehicle went on sale in Japan and Australia as the Honda MDX; sales with Honda badges ended with the introduction of the second generation three years later.
First generation (YD1; 2001)
Derived from Honda's Global mid-size platform which underpins cars like the Honda Accord, Acura TL, TSX and Odyssey, it is powered by a J35A3 3.5 L SOHC 24 valve V6 engine with VTEC. Curb weight is 4,451 lb (2,019 kg), with a 106.3 in (2,700 mm) wheelbase and 8 in (200 mm) of ground clearance. The cargo floor can flip up to provide two additional seats. The vehicle is designed to hold 7 passengers, but the third row seats are small and only seat two, in contrast to the Odyssey and Pilot whose third row holds three passengers.
The vehicle features an automatic four wheel drive system (named VTM-4) that engages during off the line acceleration as well as when wheel slippage is detected. Additionally, the system offers a lock mode which can be activated and operated at low speeds and provides permanent 4WD and the equivalent of a locked rear differential; designed for climbing steep hills and getting out of stuck situations. To reduce drivetrain noise and increase fuel efficiency, the system runs as front wheel drive during normal cruising. The VTM-4 AWD system in the MDX has the same design as the VTM-4 systems found in the Honda Pilot and Honda Ridgeline. It is different than Honda's "RealTime AWD" system in the Honda CR-V and other models in that it can lock and it attempts to predict when traction will be lost and apply power to all four wheels before slippage occurs (by monitoring throttle inputs).
The navigation system and DVD entertainment system (also popular on other Honda/Acura models, such as the CR-V and Odyssey) options were mutually exclusive in the 2002 model. Both could be ordered at the same time since the 2003 model. The navigation option comes with a backup camera since the 2003 model. Since 2005, the navigation system featured information from Zagat about restaurants and other points of interest. The 2003 model was rated as Ultra Low Emission Vehicle. The United States Environmental Protection Agency estimates 23 mpg‑US (10 L/100 km; 28 mpg‑imp) highway and 17 mpg‑US (14 L/100 km; 20 mpg‑imp) city.
The first two model years' 3.5-liter V6 engine produces 240 hp (179 kW) and 245 lb⋅ft (332 N⋅m) of torque from 3000 to 5000 rpm. For the 2003 model, the engine was improved to produce 20 hp (15 kW) more power than the earlier models, and the wheel designs were updated. The 2004 through 2006 engine received a modest increase in power and produces 265 hp (198 kW) and 253 lb⋅ft (343 N⋅m). The 2004 model is credited with a top speed of 137 mph, and a 0-60 time of 7.1 seconds. The 2004 model features dual tail pipes instead of the single pipe in earlier models, side curtain airbags, new head lights and tail lights, and new wheels. Some chrome trimmings on the 2004 model use matte finish to distinguish from the polished shiny finish on earlier models. Little changed for the MDX during the 2006 model year with a few minor revisions to the vehicle's chrome and faux wood interior trim which could now be had with a dark grey wood (as opposed to reddish wood on earlier models), and also a black dash and steering wheel in tan interiors.

Common 2011 Acura Mdx problems
The Acura MDX 2011 has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are some of the issues in detail:
- Malfunctioning Climate System: 2008 MDX owners had to contend with fault A/C units due to leaks caused by the compression hose rubbing against the vehicle’s grounding surface.
- Stalling or Lurching: Another source of headache for MDX owners is when their vehicle stalls or lurches forward during driving, particularly between speeds of 35 and 45 mph.
These issues are important to consider when purchasing a used Acura MDX 2011, as they can impact the vehicle's reliability and overall cost of ownership. It is recommended to thoroughly inspect the vehicle and consider getting a good extended warranty to protect against expensive repairs.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-16

- Summary: Engine excessively consumes oil. No issue to the engine whatsoever no smoke at exhaust no burning oil. Check my oil after about 1000 miles and I’m missing a quart of oil. There was once a recall for this issue but the window to get repaired has expired. That does help people that purchased this car after the window. Issue need to be a permanent recall and not a temporary.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-28
- VIN: 2hnyd2h61bh
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: This car burns oil at an insane rate. I have to go to Jiffy Lube after only 1500 miles, and they are in shock when they top me off each time. Two of the employees have said that my engine is at trial of exploding because this car burns through oil so fast. Your website says that there is no recall, but there actually WAS a recall for this car, but I was NEVER NOTIFIED about this dangerous issue. Acura refuses to honor the recall because they say the window to get the car fixed has expired. This is ridiculous and unsafe.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-02-15
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: The contact owns a 2011 Acura MDX. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the airbag warning light illuminated. - Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS
- Summary: I HAVE A 2011 ACURA MDX AND JUST RECENTLY MY AIRBAG SRS LIGHT HAS CAME ON WHEN I TURNED MY VEHICLE ON. I WAS TOLD BY THE ACURA DEALERSHIP THAT THIS WAS DUE TO A MALFUNCTIONING AIRBAG SENSOR. DUE TO THIS MALFUNCTION NONE OF MY AIRBAGS WILL DEPLOY IF I WERE TO GET INTO AN ACCIDENT. WHICH I THINK IS ABSOLUTELY INSANE. WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER THEY STATED IT WOULD COST OVER $1500 TO FIX IT. AS A SINGLE MOTHER I AM NOT ABLE TO AFFORD TO HAVE THIS ISSUE FIXED. I CALLED ACURA AND THE LADY I SPOKE TOO WAS VERY RUDE AND SAID THAT THERE WAS NOT ANY RECALLS REGARDING THIS ISSUE AND THAT ACURA WOULD NOT HELP WITH THE REPAIRS. MY CAR HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT AND I ALWAYS MAINTAIN THE OIL, TIRES, MAINTENANCE ON THIS CAR. NO ONE SHOULD EVER HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT GETTING IN THE CAR WITH THEIR CHILDREN AND FEELING UNSAFE BECAUSE OF MALFUNCTION AIR BAG SENSOR OR COMPUTER. THE ACURA DEALERSHIP SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS MALFUNCTIONING SYSTEM.
ENGINE PROBLEM

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-06-01
- VIN: 2HNYD2H25BH
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I CHANGE ENGINE OIL EVERY 3,000 MILES, BUT I HAVE TO CHANGE EVERY 1,000 MILES IN THE LAST YEAR. EXPLAIN TO THE TECHNICIAN EVERY TIME THAT IT IS BECAUSE THE OIL CIRCULATES AND DOES NOT RETURN AND BURNS OUT IN THE MIDDLE AND DISAPPEARS. SO I CHECK THE AMOUNT OF OIL ONCE A WEEK AND ALWAYS REPLENISH THE AMOUNT. ESPECIALLY WHEN DRIVING OVER LONG DISTANCES, IT'S SO ANXIOUS, YOU CAN'T STOP THE ANXIETY THAT THE OIL BURNS OUT AND STANDS ON THE STREET OR THE ENGINE ITSELF BURNS OUT AND BECOMES USELESS.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-03-22
- VIN: 2HNYD2H60BH
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I'VE HAD A RECURRING PROBLEM WITH OIL BURNING THROUGH AT A MUCH FASTER RATE THAN EXPECTED. FOR EXAMPLE, IN THE LAST TWO MONTHS SINCE MY LAST OIL CHANGE WITH AN ACURA SERVICE/REPAIR CENTER, THE OIL INDICATOR LIGHT HAS COME ON REPEATEDLY. ALSO, THE 'CHECK EMISSIONS SYSTEM' HAS ALSO DISPLAYED AFTER DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY. IT SMELLED LIKED SOMETHING WAS BURNING IN THE ENGINE. I CHECKED THE OIL ONLY TO FIND OUT NO OIL WAS EMPTY. I ADDRESSED THE OIL INDICATOR LIGHT TO ACURA SEVERAL MONTHS AGO DURING A PREVIOUS OIL CHANGE. THEY TOLD ME EVERYTHING IS FINE. I TALKED TO A SEPARATE MECHANIC AND HE STATED HE HAS SEEN PROBLEMS WITH THE MDX ON OTHER MAKES AND MODELS OF CARS WHERE SCRATCHES ON THE CYLINDER WALL WERE CAUSING THE INCREASED OIL USAGE. IN ORDER TO FIX IT WOULD COST AROUND $4,000. I'VE BEEN LOYAL TO ACURA IN SERVICING MY CAR. NONE OF THEM HAS STATED THAT THIS COULD BE AN ISSUE. ALSO, SHOULDN'T A PROBLEM LIKE THIS WARRANT A RECALL? JUST LOOKING FOR SOME ANSWERS ON AN ISSUE I THINK IS WRONG IN THE WAY CUSTOMERS HAVE BEEN INFORMED AND TREATED ALONG WITH POTENTIALLY A SAFETY ISSUE.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-02-17
- VIN: 2HNYD2H52BH
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: I OWN TWO ACURA MDXS. 2009 SPORT AND 2011 ADVANCE. BOTH THESE VEHICLES ACTIVE DAMPER SYSTEMS HAVE FAILED MULTIPLE TIMES. ACURA OR AMERICAN HONDA KEEPS REPLACING THESE FAILED PARTS WITH THE SAME FAILED PART # 51606-STX-A59. THESE PARTS ARE FAILING PREMATURELY. WE SHOULD NOT BE REPLACING THESE PARTS AT 50,000 MILES. THIS IS A SUSPENSION PART AND A REAL SAFETY CONCERN. I HAVE REPLACED THESE ADS STRUTS NOW 5 TIMES ON MY 2009. 3 FRONTS AND 2 REARS. I RECENTLY HAD 2 STRUTS REPLACED ON MY 2011 MDX ADVANCE. I TAKE THE TIME NOW TO POINT OUT THIS MAJOR GLARING ISSUE SO THE NHTSA CAN LOOK INTO THIS MATTER FURTHER. PLEASE LOOK AT MDXER'S AND ACURAZINE COMPLAINTS ON THIS ISSUE. EVERY PERSON WHO OWNS THESE HIGHER PRICED MODELS IS HAVING THESE SAME ISSUES. MANY ARE DRIVING AROUND WITH THIS ISSUE NOT KNOWING. I DID FOR 20,000 MILES ON MY 2009 MDX NOT KNOWING WHY MY VEHICLE WAS MAKING CLUNKING NOISES AND HAD A SUSPENSION LIKE A TRUCK. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS ISSUE. ACURA SOMETIMES COVERS THESE FAILED PARTS 100%, SOME 50%, BUT MOST THEY LET THE CUSTOMER PAY 100%. THE GLARING FACT IS THAT THESE ADS STRUTS SEEM TO FAIL JUST OUTSIDE THE VEHICLES WARRANTY. ACURA KNOWS THIS IS AN ISSUE, THEY EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON THESE LONGER BECAUSE OF THIS ISSUE. I FEEL STRONGLY THAT THIS IS A MAJOR ISSUE AND THAT ALL ADS STRUTS SHOULD BE COVERED BY AMERICAN HONDA 100%. I URGE YOU TO LOOK INTO THIS ISSUE. I HAVE REPLACED 7 ADS STRUTS ,SO FAR, ON BOTH MY MDXS WHICH I STILL BOTH OWN. PLEASE I URGE YOU TO LOOK INTO THIS MAJOR ISSUE

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-07-15
- VIN: 2HNYD2H69BH
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: THERE IS SHUDDERING COMING FROM THE TRANSMISSION ON SPEEDS OF 30-40 MPH. IT SEEMS LIKE ACURA KNEW OF THE PROBLEM AND SENT A RECALL FOR MDX,RDX AND ZDX THAT WERE MADE FROM 2010 TO 2013 BUT MY VIN WASN'T INCLUDED ALTHOUGH I AM FACING THE SAME PROBLEM AS THOSE RECALLED VEHICLES.
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-11-06
- VIN: 2HNYD2H69BH
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED AND DISSATISFIED WITH THE 2011 ACURA MDX I PURCHASED NOVEMBER 2018 THIS VEHICLE HAS HAD ALL TYPE OF PROBLEMS FROM THE START FROM OIL ISSUES TO NEEDING THE ENGINE REBUILT TO NOW TIMING BELT ISSUES AND THE ONLY THING THAT IS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY IS THE REBUILD AND IT IS NOT LIKELY TO HAPPEN UNTIL EARLY 2020 AND THE ONLY THING I'M GETTING IS QUOTES OF 1200 DOLLARS AND SORRY YOUR GOING THRU THIS I AM TIRED OF THAT FROM ONE OF MOBILE MOST RESPECTED DEALERSHIP I WANT IMMEDIATE ACTION ESPECIALLY WHEN IT WAS UNDER WARRANTY AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN INSPECTED BEFORE IT BECAME A SELLABLE VEHICLE I AM ALSO SENDING THIS RESPONSE TO ACURA AND THE BETTER
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-08-14
- VIN: 2HNYD2H29BH
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: THE VEHICLE IS CONSUMING TOO MUCH OIL. DEALERSHIP MADE US GO THROUGH OIL CONSUMPTION TEST AND CONFIRMED THIS IS AN ISSUE AND INCLUDED US IN THEIR WARRANTY EXTENSION TO DO THE REPAIRS. HOWEVER, ITS BEEN MORE THAN A MONTH AND THERE IS NO TIMELINE ON EVEN WHEN THE PARTS WILL BE AVAILABLE AND IT COULD BE ANOTHER MONTH OR 2 OR 4 MONTHS. I CALLED DEALER SEVERAL TIMES AS WELL AS ACURA WITH NO DIFFERENT ANSWER.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-11-02
- VIN: 2HNYD2H21BH
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: POWER WINDOWS AND SUNROOF STARED WORKING INTERMITTENTLY FOR A FEW DAYS AND THEN STOPPED WORKING ALL-TOGETHER. APPARENTLY, THERE IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH WIRES BREAKING INSIDE DRIVER DOOR SUB-WIRE, ACURA PART NUMBER 32757-STX-A01. MY CAR ONLY HAS 101,768 MILES. I DID SOME RESEARCH ONLINE AND I SAW PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE WITH THEIR ACURA MDX VEHICLES.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-09-11
- VIN: 2HNYD2H69BH
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: ON SEPT 11 2019 MY MECHANIC NOTIFIED ME OF A PROBLEM WITH MY 2011 ACURA MDX. HE SAID IT WAS EXCESSIVELY BURNING OIL. HE SAID TO CONTACT ACURA/HONDA BECAUSE THEY IDENTIFIED IT AS A PROBLEM WITH SOME OF THEIR CARS. I CALLED THAT SAME DAY AND WAS TOLD THAT YES, THERE IS A DEFECT IN MY MAKE AND MODEL CAR AND THAT HAD ISSUED A WARRANTY TO COVER THE REPAIRS, BUT UNFORTUNATELY, BECAUSE I WAS 11 DAYS TOO LATE, THEY WOULD NOT FIX THE CAR. I HAVE ASKED FOR AN EXTENSION TO AT LEAST GET THE OIL CONSUMPTION TEST DONE (THAT I WOULD PAY FOR) TO SEE IF MY CAR HAS THE DEFECT. THEY SAID THAT I AM FREE TO GET THE TEST DONE ON MY OWN AND EVEN IF THE CAR IS DEFECTIVE THEY WILL NOT FIX IT. ALL I AM ASKING IS FOR THEM TO FIX THE DEFECTIVE CAR. I NEVER RECEIVED THE LETTER AND THEY CANNOT VERIFY WHETHER THEY SENT IT TO ME.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-07-11
- VIN: 2HNYD2H69BH
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: SUNROOF GLASS EXPLODED SPONTANEOUSLY WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY ABOUT 80MPH WITH LITTLE TRAFFIC AND CLEAR SKIES. LUCKILY, THE SUNROOF INTERIOR SLIDE COVER WAS CLOSED PREVENTING THE GLASS SHARDS TO FALL INTO THE VEHICLE. TOOK CAR TO A LOCAL ACURA DEALER AND THEY DID NOT MENTION A RECALL AND NEEDED TIME TO ORDER A NEW PART AND SCHEDULE SERVICE. DECLINED THEIR SERVICE AND WENT TO AN AUTO GLASS SERVICE FOR PENDING REPAIRS. I BELIEVE THIS WAS NO FAULT OF MY OWN AND I WASN'T AWARE OF THIS SUNROOF ISSUE. IF THE GUARD WAS NOT CLOSED MYSELF AND PASSENGERS WOULD MOST LIKELY GET HURT.

Took me 4 months and a lot of comparison to nail it down to the MDX.Compared to BMW X5 and Audi Q7 Great stability and handling.Does the corners well. Good Pick Up and a host of convenient features.GPS w/ weather and traffic is great.3rd row is ideal for kids and slim adults but other than that it is spacious. Braking is smooth and the headlights are nice.

I have been driving the 2011 Acura MDX w/Advance Package for about six months now, and while I appreciate the ventilated seats and blind spot assist, I have some reservations about my decision to buy an Acura. The interior quality is not up to par for a car that costs over $50,000, with too much plastic and not enough authentic wood trim. If you are in the market for a seven-passenger midsize SUV, I would suggest considering the Lexus GX460 or the Audi Q7, both of which have far superior interiors to the MDX. That being said, the Advance Package does offer many useful features, and overall, I believe it provides good value for the price. I hope this information is helpful to you.

The vehicle has 118,000 miles on it and has never needed a repair (I don’t count one brake replacement or tires). It's just a phenomenal, reliable vehicle.

The first vehicle I owned was a 2000 Acura MDX. Having owned several vehicles due to my husband being a dealer (including Lexus, BMW, Mercedes, Range Rover, and Cadillac), I can confidently say that the MDX is my favorite. It offers great quality, gas mileage, and room for an affordable price. It has everything you need for day-to-day driving with children, including comfort, class, room, and excellent options. Additionally, the dealership here is a pleasure to do business with.

Congratulations on owning your MDX for 6 months! It's great to hear that you are very happy with your choice. You did a thorough research by looking at the Mercedes M-class, the Audi Q5, a Subaru Outback, and a Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland. It's wonderful that the MDX met all your needs with its nice interior for work, rear leg room, navigation system and electronics, and good handling. The navigation system and voice commands are particularly impressive as they recognize the voice easily. Although it's worth noting that it may not be optimized for all Blackberry phones. The MDX drives like a car and is a breeze to park, making it a great family car. Your teenagers don't complain in the back seat, which is always a plus. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with the MDX. While I enjoyed the vehicle for the first few years, I have noticed that the oil consumption has increased as the car has aged. Unfortunately, I have had to add more oil than I expected, as the maintenance minder indicates that the oil is bone dry before it even reaches 50%. I reached out to Acura and they ran an oil consumption test, which they claim is within spec. While I appreciate their response, I still have concerns and would like to discuss this further. However, I have not been able to get in touch with them recently. As a long-time fan of Acura, I am disappointed by this experience and it has made me reconsider future purchases.

Despite the 40,000 miles on my MDX, the leather seats are in very poor condition. The quality of the leather is unacceptable given the price of the vehicle.
Buck Heidenreich 2024-07-04
I owned this vehicle for 18 months and recently traded it in for a couple of reasons. While driving in a combination of city and highway, I was only averaging 16 mpg, which I found to be unacceptable. Additionally, I was disappointed with the interior of the vehicle. The design was not to my liking, and the leather was cheap and showed significant wear after only 10,000 miles. The dash was covered in fake wood, and there were many rattles in the car. The ride was also quite hard, and road noise was prominent. Although the exterior was really nice, the interior and gas mileage really started to weigh on me. I suppose that's what happens when you try to make a Honda into a luxury car.

Hello there! I couldn't help but notice some issues with this SUV. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced similar problems? I understand that these are not inexpensive cars, and I'm sure we all want them to perform at their best. I have had to visit the dealer a few times in the last 11 months due to some vibration issues. One issue was fixed by adjusting the suspension system, but I am still experiencing a vibration in the steering wheel at speeds above 70 mph. The dealer has suggested that this is normal, but I think it might be due to the factory-installed tires. Unfortunately, they don't seem to agree with me. On top of that, I have also noticed a vibration coming from the roof. Has anyone else experienced these issues? Thank you for your help!

I leased this car last year because it had lots of leg room and cargo space and seemed like a good choice. Unfortunately, after driving it for a year, I've been disappointed numerous times by the way Acura cut corners to save a buck. It just doesn't feel like a luxury car. It basically feels like a Honda. In my opinion, this car is not worth the $50K price tag it touts. To add insult to injury, I had a less than satisfactory experience with the sales team at the dealership. I would recommend considering other options before purchasing an Acura from Hendrick Acura. I'm disappointed by this car and the service, and I'm in the process of transferring my lease. I just can't drive or pay for this car any longer.
