The Acura MDX is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV with three-row seating produced by the Japanese automaker Honda under its luxury Acura division since 2000. The alphanumeric moniker stands for "Multi-Dimensional" luxury. It has ranked as the second-best selling mid-size luxury SUV after the Lexus RX in the U.S.
The MDX is the first luxury crossover SUV to have standard third-row seating, and shares its platform with the Honda Pilot. First generation (YD1; 2001)
Derived from Honda's Global mid-size platform which underpins cars like the Honda Accord, Acura TL, TSX and Odyssey, it is powered by a J35A3 3.5 L SOHC 24 valve V6 engine with VTEC. Curb weight is 4,451 lb (2,019 kg), with a 106.3 in (2,700 mm) wheelbase and 8 in (200 mm) of ground clearance. The cargo floor can flip up to provide two additional seats. The vehicle is designed to hold 7 passengers, but the third row seats are small and only seat two, in contrast to the Odyssey and Pilot whose third row holds three passengers.
The vehicle features an automatic four wheel drive system (named VTM-4) that engages during off the line acceleration as well as when wheel slippage is detected. Additionally, the system offers a lock mode which can be activated and operated at low speeds and provides permanent 4WD and the equivalent of a locked rear differential; designed for climbing steep hills and getting out of stuck situations. To reduce drivetrain noise and increase fuel efficiency, the system runs as front wheel drive during normal cruising. The VTM-4 AWD system in the MDX has the same design as the VTM-4 systems found in the Honda Pilot and Honda Ridgeline. It is different than Honda's "RealTime AWD" system in the Honda CR-V and other models in that it can lock and it attempts to predict when traction will be lost and apply power to all four wheels before slippage occurs (by monitoring throttle inputs).
The navigation system and DVD entertainment system (also popular on other Honda/Acura models, such as the CR-V and Odyssey) options were mutually exclusive in the 2002 model. Both could be ordered at the same time since the 2003 model. The navigation option comes with a backup camera since the 2003 model. Since 2005, the navigation system featured information from Zagat about restaurants and other points of interest. The 2003 model was rated as Ultra Low Emission Vehicle. The United States Environmental Protection Agency estimates 23 mpg‑US (10 L/100 km; 28 mpg‑imp) highway and 17 mpg‑US (14 L/100 km; 20 mpg‑imp) city.
The first two model years' 3.5-liter V6 engine produces 240 hp (179 kW) and 245 lb⋅ft (332 N⋅m) of torque from 3000 to 5000 rpm. For the 2003 model, the engine was improved to produce 20 hp (15 kW) more power than the earlier models, and the wheel designs were updated. The 2004 through 2006 engine received a modest increase in power and produces 265 hp (198 kW) and 253 lb⋅ft (343 N⋅m). The 2004 model is credited with a top speed of 137 mph, and a 0-60 time of 7.1 seconds. The 2004 model features dual tail pipes instead of the single pipe in earlier models, side curtain airbags, new head lights and tail lights, and new wheels. Some chrome trimmings on the 2004 model use matte finish to distinguish from the polished shiny finish on earlier models. Little changed for the MDX during the 2006 model year with a few minor revisions to the vehicle's chrome and faux wood interior trim which could now be had with a dark grey wood (as opposed to reddish wood on earlier models), and also a black dash and steering wheel in tan interiors.

- Summary: The engine consistently consumes too much oil between service events. The low oil light comes on. I had this problem for over 8 years and the dealership said it was not a problem until now and they want me to pay for it. The oil control rings have been clogged since 2016 and progressively gotten worse. The clogged rings cause restriction of oil to return to the crankcase. This causes a decrease in available oil and may cause overheating that could lead to engine fire. Acura should fix the oil control rings to function properly. They have identified this in the past, through a service bulletin (19-006). I have performed 97% of my oil changes at Acura dealerships.

- Summary: 11/17/2020 Acura battery of our 2012 Acura MDX failed & was replaced under manufacturer warranty, via comp was provided. 6/29/2021 Acura battery failed again. Dealership did not honor warranty claiming manufacturer Acura would not pay for replacement. Dealership said I needed to contact Acura Client Relationship which I did. ACR initially said dealership was at fault & the battery should be replaced under warranty. I asked for a client number & was placed on 10 minute hold. When agent returned she changed her story saying battery was not under warranty even though it had been replaced under warranty in November 2020. Their reason was I ‘did not pay for the battery.’ This is not true as I did pay a prorate portion of the replacement in November & the original battery I purchased with the certified vehicle purchase. The ACR agent declined to provide me a claim number. I talked to the dealer service manager Andrew Jackson & the service tech writer Tevin Jackson. I requested contact information for an Acura Zone or Regional Manager. Andrew stated he would speak to general manager - Cecil Turner. I followed up with Andrew, was told that Acura Client Relations have no record of my call (I have itemized billing & therefore proof of the call including duration) & he asked me to call back to get a claim number. I did this & obtained a claim number which I provided to Mr. Jackson. I followed up again & was told the Regional representative was going to try & obtain an Acura Loyalty Card. Weeks later I checked on this again & was told they were still trying. While the dealership is not at fault & my claim of Fraud is not directed at Acura of Little Rock or Mr. Tevin, Mr. Andrew or Mr. Cecil (even though as a 21 year customer of this dealership he has not bothered to contact me in any way) I am very dismayed that the manufacturer Acura – an American Honda com. The repeated battery failures are a real & present safety danger. Acura batteries are garbage.

AFTER THAT THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO PRODUCE SMOKE. THE CONTACT'S WIFE PLACED THE VEHICLE IN DRIVE AND EXITED THE VEHICLE. THEY HEARD AN ABNORMAL CRACKING SOUND AND THE VEHICLE CAUGHT ON FIRE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT PUT THE FIRE OUT. A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT MADE. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE VEHICLE WAS DEEMED TOTALED BY THE CONTACT'S INSURANCE. THE CONTACT CALLED MUNGENAST ACURA OF ST.LOUIS (13720 MANCHESTER RD, MANCHESTER, MO 63011 (314) 822-2872) WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS DIAGNOSED AND THE TEST READ THAT A NEW ALTERNATOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 82,000.

You've got a great SUV on the fundamental side. It runs great, has enough power, and handles like a small car. However, the electronics inside could use some improvement. Even non-luxury brands like Ford have better electronics. For instance, the screen is not a touch screen, and the resolution is poor. Additionally, there are duplicate buttons for every on-screen function, resulting in a cluttered dashboard. The rearview camera is cheap and has poor resolution, making it difficult to use in dark or rainy conditions. It's almost monochrome. Lastly, I wish the side mirrors could be folded from inside since it's a wide SUV, and I need to fold the mirrors to park it inside the garage.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with this car. I bought it used from a lovely owner who had only driven it for about 20,000 miles. Since then, I've put another 127,000 miles on it and it's been an absolute joy to own. I've always made sure to take it to the dealer for all the recommended maintenance and have only had to do a couple of minor repairs, like replacing some light bulbs and the hood support struts. Honestly, I have no plans to replace this car anytime soon - it's been that good to me!

This is a wonderful car! It's very comfortable on long trips and has a quiet ride. I love it! Now, as I'm 77 years old and not as sharp as before, I need a car with all the new safety equipment.

We've owned this vehicle for just over a year and have driven it for 30k miles. Surprisingly, it was not more expensive than a loaded Honda, Ford, or GM SUV. Although I wouldn't typically consider a luxury brand for our family car, the operating costs of an Acura are much lower than those of European brands. Additionally, the depreciation rate is much more favorable. The transmission can be a bit sluggish, requiring some effort to take advantage of the 300hp. The backup camera is not very effective at night, but the gas mileage is as expected, averaging 19.5 mpg and 21-22 mpg on long trips at 75mph. Overall, this is a great vehicle unless you're comparing it to something significantly more expensive or smaller.

I spent over $50,000 on an SUV that is all talk and no walk. Although everything about this vehicle exudes quality and detail, it struggles when going up steep hills like my driveway. I was disappointed with the performance and felt embarrassed. I am considering other options such as the new Yukon Denali. It seems like the price point could be improved. In 2017, I purchased a used 2012 MDX with 55k miles. I was looking for a 3rd row SUV and had heard good things about Acura's reputation. However, I found that the design was not very attractive and the dashboard controls were primitive and difficult to read. The multi-information screen was also quite complex and required a lot of effort to navigate. Additionally, the driver's seat was quite high and the doors were short, making it difficult to get in and out. Despite these issues, I appreciate the effort that went into the design. I had previously owned a 2008 Lexus RX 350, which I found to be superior in most ways except for the lack of a 3rd row seat. While the MDX did not meet my expectations, I am grateful for the experience and will be trading it in before 6 months.
