2003 Acura Mdx problems
The Acura MDX is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV with three-row seating produced by the Japanese automaker Honda under its luxury Acura division since 2000. The alphanumeric moniker stands for "Multi-Dimensional" luxury. It has ranked as the second-best selling mid-size luxury SUV after the Lexus RX in the U.S.
The MDX is the first luxury crossover SUV to have standard third-row seating, and shares its platform with the Honda Pilot. The Pilot was made available with an eight person seating configuration, while the MDX exclusively seats seven, with two seating positions in the third row. The MDX was introduced on October 5, 2000 as a 2001 model, replacing the slow-selling U.S.-only body-on-frame SLX, based on the Isuzu Trooper. In Japan, it was made to replace the Honda Horizon (also based on the Trooper) which was discontinued in 1999. In 2003, the vehicle went on sale in Japan and Australia as the Honda MDX; sales with Honda badges ended with the introduction of the second generation three years later.
First generation (YD1; 2001)
Derived from Honda's Global mid-size platform which underpins cars like the Honda Accord, Acura TL, TSX and Odyssey, it is powered by a J35A3 3.5 L SOHC 24 valve V6 engine with VTEC. Curb weight is 4,451 lb (2,019 kg), with a 106.3 in (2,700 mm) wheelbase and 8 in (200 mm) of ground clearance. The cargo floor can flip up to provide two additional seats. The vehicle is designed to hold 7 passengers, but the third row seats are small and only seat two, in contrast to the Odyssey and Pilot whose third row holds three passengers.
The vehicle features an automatic four wheel drive system (named VTM-4) that engages during off the line acceleration as well as when wheel slippage is detected. Additionally, the system offers a lock mode which can be activated and operated at low speeds and provides permanent 4WD and the equivalent of a locked rear differential; designed for climbing steep hills and getting out of stuck situations. To reduce drivetrain noise and increase fuel efficiency, the system runs as front wheel drive during normal cruising. The VTM-4 AWD system in the MDX has the same design as the VTM-4 systems found in the Honda Pilot and Honda Ridgeline. It is different than Honda's "RealTime AWD" system in the Honda CR-V and other models in that it can lock and it attempts to predict when traction will be lost and apply power to all four wheels before slippage occurs (by monitoring throttle inputs).
The navigation system and DVD entertainment system (also popular on other Honda/Acura models, such as the CR-V and Odyssey) options were mutually exclusive in the 2002 model. Both could be ordered at the same time since the 2003 model. The navigation option comes with a backup camera since the 2003 model. Since 2005, the navigation system featured information from Zagat about restaurants and other points of interest. The 2003 model was rated as Ultra Low Emission Vehicle. The United States Environmental Protection Agency estimates 23 mpg‑US (10 L/100 km; 28 mpg‑imp) highway and 17 mpg‑US (14 L/100 km; 20 mpg‑imp) city.
The first two model years' 3.5-liter V6 engine produces 240 hp (179 kW) and 245 lb⋅ft (332 N⋅m) of torque from 3000 to 5000 rpm. For the 2003 model, the engine was improved to produce 20 hp (15 kW) more power than the earlier models, and the wheel designs were updated. The 2004 through 2006 engine received a modest increase in power and produces 265 hp (198 kW) and 253 lb⋅ft (343 N⋅m). The 2004 model is credited with a top speed of 137 mph, and a 0-60 time of 7.1 seconds. The 2004 model features dual tail pipes instead of the single pipe in earlier models, side curtain airbags, new head lights and tail lights, and new wheels. Some chrome trimmings on the 2004 model use matte finish to distinguish from the polished shiny finish on earlier models. Little changed for the MDX during the 2006 model year with a few minor revisions to the vehicle's chrome and faux wood interior trim which could now be had with a dark grey wood (as opposed to reddish wood on earlier models), and also a black dash and steering wheel in tan interiors.

Common 2003 Acura Mdx problems
The Acura MDX, a luxury crossover SUV, has been popular since its introduction in 1999. However, like any vehicle, it has experienced common problems throughout its generations. This article focuses on the 2003 Acura MDX, highlighting the most frequently reported issues by owners.
- Transmission Failure: The 2003 Acura MDX, like its predecessors, has been plagued by transmission issues. Transmission failure is a common problem, particularly in the early models (2001-2005). These failures often occur between 100,000 and 130,000 miles and can cost over $4,000 to repair. The 2003 model is no exception, with transmission problems that can lead to failure. The transmission control module (TCM) software may need updating to address this issue.
- Excessive Oil Consumption: Some 2003 Acura MDX owners have reported excessive oil consumption, with the vehicle consuming more oil than usual. This issue can be costly to fix, with repairs potentially costing as much as $6,800. Honda/Acura dealers have recommended updating the transmission control module (TCM) software to address this problem.
- Malfunctioning Climate System: Acura MDX owners, particularly those with the 2008 model, have reported issues with the air conditioning (A/C) system. The problem is often due to a leak caused by the compression hose rubbing against the vehicle's grounding surface.
- Stalling or Lurching: Another issue reported by Acura MDX owners is stalling or lurching during acceleration, particularly between 35 and 45 mph. This problem can be caused by a faulty VCM rocker, and Acura recommends replacing the faulty part to address the issue.
In conclusion, while the Acura MDX is known for its solid reliability, it has experienced several common problems, particularly in its early models. The 2003 Acura MDX is no exception, with issues such as intermittent starting problems, transmission failure, excessive oil consumption, malfunctioning climate systems, and stalling or lurching during acceleration. Owners are advised to be aware of these potential issues and seek professional help if they experience any of these problems.

The affected vehicles have a passenger side frontal air bag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion which, over time, could cause the inflator to rupture upon its deployment.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the passenger seat occupant or other occupants possibly causing serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began on July 1, 2015. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are JU4, JU5, JU6, and JU7. Note: Vehicles that have already received a replacement passenger air bag inflator as part of the recall remedy for an earlier campaign such as 14V353 or 14V700 (Honda recall numbers S95, JH6, JH7, JH8, JH9, JJ0, JJ1, JJ2, JJ6, JM5 and JM6) are not included in this recall. However, this recall does supersede 13V132 and 14V349. - Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain model year 2001-2007 Accord, 2001-2005 Civic, 2001-2004 Honda Civic GX, 2003-2005 Honda Civic Hybrid, 2002-2006 CR-V, 2003-2011 Element, 2002-2004 Odyssey, 2003-2008 Pilot, 2006 Ridgeline, 2003 Acura 3.2CL, 2003-2006 Acura MDX, and 2002-2003 Acura 3.2TL vehicles. The affected vehicles are equipped with a dual-stage driver frontal air bag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion and other factors, including manufacturing variability that, over time, could cause the inflator to rupture.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began on July 1, 2015. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Owners may contact Acura customer service at 1-800-382-2238, select option 4. Note: Vehicles that have had their driver frontal air bag replaced previously as part of a recall remedy prior to September 12, 2014 need to have their air bag replaced under this recall as well. Vehicles that, on or after September 12, 2014, received a remedy for a prior driver frontal air bag inflator recall already received an inflator of a different design, and therefore are not included in this recall and do not require additional servicing. Note: This recall fully supersedes recalls 08V-593, 09V-259, 10V-041, 11V-260, 14V-351 and 15V-153. Honda's numbers for this recall are JQ9, JR0, JR1, JR2, JR3, JR4, JR5, JR6, JR7, and JR8.

Due to electrical noise, a component in the air bag control module may fail, causing the front air bags, side air bags, and/or seatbelt pretensioners to deploy inadvertently while the vehicle is being operated.
- Consequence: Inadvertent deployment of the air bags may increase the risk of injury and the possibility of a vehicle crash.
- Remedy: Honda dealers will replace the supplemental restraint system electronic control unit (SRS ECU). The recall began on February 22, 2016. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-800-999-1009. Honda's number for this recall is JN6 (Odyssey), and JN7 (MDX). Note: This recall supersedes recall 13V-412. This is a great looking car in my humble opinion. I absolutely love driving it, it has plenty of room and handles beautifully. However, the quality of the internal parts is disappointing. The vents, seat heaters, switches, and other components are all very cheaply made. These parts should last for 5-6 years or longer, but unfortunately, they tend to fail after only 2-3 years. It's frustrating that such small and inexpensive components are causing such big problems. I hope that Acura will consider upgrading these parts to make them more reliable in the future. Despite these issues, I still think that the Acura is a fantastic vehicle and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a stylish and comfortable ride.

My transmission failed at only 73,000 miles, leading me to give a poor reliability rating. It is disappointing that an SUV of this caliber would have such an issue. Unfortunately, this is a common problem with 2001, 2002, and 2003 transmissions. The repair cost of $3,167.00 is significant, especially considering that the warranty had already expired at 60,000 miles. However, I am confident in my assessment of the situation and the facts presented.

The handling is the best thing about this SUV. I was blown away when the windshield wipers went on automatically during my first encounter with rain. It's a much more comfortable ride than my previous Durango. My daughter loves the DVD player.

I'm so glad I chose the MDX over the Highlander and Pilot. The second seats in the Highlander were like a board and the Pilot had too much road noise. The additional cost of the MDX was definitely worth it. The interior decor is excellent and the sound quality on the Touring package system is top-notch. I wasn't initially interested in the navigation system, but now I think it's great. The crash ratings, stability system, front and side airbags, and solid, relatively quiet atmosphere all give me a great sense of security.

You've made an excellent choice with this SUV! It's packed with many standard features and only a few optional extras. The driving experience is more akin to a powerful car than a truck, and it's incredibly comfortable too.

I purchased a 2003 MDX a few months ago, but unfortunately, it has not met my expectations. Despite having only a little over 60000 miles, the vehicle appears to be poorly built, with issues such as transmission problems, a headliner that was cut too short and is falling out in the back, a rear window washer that is about to fall off, and a loose part inside the right door that creates a lot of noise when closed. As a result, I am disappointed with my purchase and would not consider buying another Acura. It is unfortunate that this company, which used to produce good cars, has experienced a decline in quality.

I purchased my 2003 Acura MDX brand new and have only driven it for 40,000 miles, all of which have been on the highway and with great care. Unfortunately, I have had to replace the rotors and brakes under warranty at least four times. Additionally, I have had to bring the truck to Acura on four separate occasions due to issues with the steering wheel control. Despite the dealer's attempts to fix the issue, it persists. I have filed a complaint with Acura Corporate and will be bringing my truck in again tonight to be serviced. While I have been disappointed with the constant problems I have experienced, I have only eight months left on my lease and will not be purchasing another Acura in the future.

Although I have owned cars for 25 years, I have never experienced such a low-quality vehicle. It is disappointing to have constant noises and problems in a car that is supposed to be luxurious. Initially, there was a noise in the front wheel well that took 3 weeks to find and fix. Additionally, there is a sound of fuel sloshing in the fuel tank, which Acura claims is normal for this car. The stereo speakers in the doors started vibrating, and there were also door noises. It turns out that the seal needed lubricating. The brakes also make a clunking noise, which Acura claims is a slight clicking. Although caliper adjustment is normal, the noise is not. Despite these issues, I am confident that Acura will address them and provide a satisfactory solution.
