The Acura MDX is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV with three-row seating produced by the Japanese automaker Honda under its luxury Acura division since 2000. The alphanumeric moniker stands for "Multi-Dimensional" luxury. It has ranked as the second-best selling mid-size luxury SUV after the Lexus RX in the U.S.
The MDX is the first luxury crossover SUV to have standard third-row seating, and shares its platform with the Honda Pilot. First generation (YD1; 2001)
Derived from Honda's Global mid-size platform which underpins cars like the Honda Accord, Acura TL, TSX and Odyssey, it is powered by a J35A3 3.5 L SOHC 24 valve V6 engine with VTEC. Curb weight is 4,451 lb (2,019 kg), with a 106.3 in (2,700 mm) wheelbase and 8 in (200 mm) of ground clearance. The cargo floor can flip up to provide two additional seats. The vehicle is designed to hold 7 passengers, but the third row seats are small and only seat two, in contrast to the Odyssey and Pilot whose third row holds three passengers.
The vehicle features an automatic four wheel drive system (named VTM-4) that engages during off the line acceleration as well as when wheel slippage is detected. Additionally, the system offers a lock mode which can be activated and operated at low speeds and provides permanent 4WD and the equivalent of a locked rear differential; designed for climbing steep hills and getting out of stuck situations. To reduce drivetrain noise and increase fuel efficiency, the system runs as front wheel drive during normal cruising. The VTM-4 AWD system in the MDX has the same design as the VTM-4 systems found in the Honda Pilot and Honda Ridgeline. It is different than Honda's "RealTime AWD" system in the Honda CR-V and other models in that it can lock and it attempts to predict when traction will be lost and apply power to all four wheels before slippage occurs (by monitoring throttle inputs).
The navigation system and DVD entertainment system (also popular on other Honda/Acura models, such as the CR-V and Odyssey) options were mutually exclusive in the 2002 model. Both could be ordered at the same time since the 2003 model. The navigation option comes with a backup camera since the 2003 model. Since 2005, the navigation system featured information from Zagat about restaurants and other points of interest. The 2003 model was rated as Ultra Low Emission Vehicle. The United States Environmental Protection Agency estimates 23 mpg‑US (10 L/100 km; 28 mpg‑imp) highway and 17 mpg‑US (14 L/100 km; 20 mpg‑imp) city.
The first two model years' 3.5-liter V6 engine produces 240 hp (179 kW) and 245 lb⋅ft (332 N⋅m) of torque from 3000 to 5000 rpm. For the 2003 model, the engine was improved to produce 20 hp (15 kW) more power than the earlier models, and the wheel designs were updated. The 2004 through 2006 engine received a modest increase in power and produces 265 hp (198 kW) and 253 lb⋅ft (343 N⋅m). The 2004 model is credited with a top speed of 137 mph, and a 0-60 time of 7.1 seconds. The 2004 model features dual tail pipes instead of the single pipe in earlier models, side curtain airbags, new head lights and tail lights, and new wheels. Some chrome trimmings on the 2004 model use matte finish to distinguish from the polished shiny finish on earlier models. Little changed for the MDX during the 2006 model year with a few minor revisions to the vehicle's chrome and faux wood interior trim which could now be had with a dark grey wood (as opposed to reddish wood on earlier models), and also a black dash and steering wheel in tan interiors.

I reversed my car lo leave, and the car went out of control and was not until it crashed on two other parked cars that came to a stop. Then, After reversing my car, when trying to put it into drive, it would not move. When I tried to turn it off, the engine (re) started again and it worked so I could clear the path for other cars and wait until the police came. I had major maintenance at Acura Hopkins 2 and 3 years ago, I had a new steering pump and hoses changed 5 months ago and new front and rear brakes 3 months ago. Many people who are familiar with cars tell me that it was probably the rings. I don't know it may be the transmission? There was a police report as there were two other cars involved and both with severe damages. State Farm considered my car totaled despite the large amount of money spent to bring this car to almost new condition.

- Summary: Multiple lights appear turn on and off indicated on dashboard, VGA, check engine light, and tire pressure system. I run a diagnostics and it says my Evap System had a code telling me to replace gas cap. I went to the auto parts store and purchased a new gas cap that is specifically for my vehicle. I turn the vehicle back on and code is still on. So I get the code erased with my diagnostic reader and the sensor turns off. But give it a few weeks and that light turns back with same code telling me to replace gas cap. I went back to return my gas cap at AutoZone. Then ordered an OEM gas cap for my vehicle and erased code and then code came back less than a month later. It can’t be two brand new parts, one was a universal part but specific to my vehicle. And second part was OEM specifically for my vehicle and from Acura/Honda parts department. So I don’t know what to do because repair said its a dumb code and just reset if I already replaced once. And don’t worry about the code indicator because the Evap system appears to be working. So it’s either an electrical issue or a glitch. I’m not comfortable with those options

THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AT 800-999-1009 AND WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER INFORMED THE CONTACT TO CALL THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE CONTACT WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THE VEHICLE TO BE TOWED TO THE DEALER AND ALSO A DIAGNOSTIC FEE. A CASE NUMBER 06320658 WAS PROVIDED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 120,000.

(Dorman) is recalling certain Accelerator Pedal Assemblies part numbers 699-114 and 825-5029-1, sold as replacement parts for 2003-2006 Acura MDX, 2004-2008 Acura TL and TSX, 2003-2007 Honda Accord, 2005-2006 Honda CR-V, 2007-2011 Honda Element, 2005-2008 Honda Pilot and 2006-2014 Honda Ridgeline vehicles. The rotating portion of the accelerator pedal assembly may bind. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 124, "Accelerator Control Systems."
- Consequence: If the accelerator pedal binds, the engine may not quickly return to idle after the pedal is no longer pressed, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Dorman will notify owners, and qualified service facilities will replace the affected accelerator pedal assemblies, free of charge. The recall began December 9, 2019. - Summary: Honda is recalling certain model year 2003 and 2004 Pilot and Odyssey and 2003 through 2006 Acura MDX passenger vehicles manufactured from November 26, 2001, through August 30, 2006. The interlock lever of the ignition switch may deform, which can allow the interlock function of a vehicle with an automatic transmission to be defeated.
- Consequence: Removal of the ignition key when the gear selector of a vehicle with an automatic transmission has not been shifted to the park position can allow the vehicle to roll away, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Honda will notify owners and instruct them to take their vehicle to a Honda or Acura dealer. The dealer will install an updated shift interlock lever and, if necessary, replace any necessary part of the ignition switch, free of charge. The recall began on February 22, 2013. This is a great and solid vehicle that is comfortable on long trips. Its wide stance provides a very stable ride and it is bigger inside than it looks. It has a lot of power and the interior, although functional, is fine with me. The only complaint I have is that the gearshift could be better designed and easier to move between gears. It is not as 'off-road' as my Jeep, but it doesn't claim to be. Additionally, I wouldn't buy it if I had to tow much weight. Overall, it's a fantastic vehicle that I would highly recommend!

The Accura MDX is a fantastic SUV for families and is also enjoyable to drive solo. It's the perfect size and height, not too big. The sleek and sexy lines are a plus, and I absolutely adore the heated seats (which I use all year round). It's a comfortable and reliable vehicle.

I drive 40K miles a year and this vehicle is perfect for me. It has decent mileage (20.5 on the highway) and is very safe to drive, especially in rain and snow. The sound system is excellent and the visibility is perfect for driving safety. It handles curves and swerving with ease and the mirrors are great, even melting snow. It tows my boat with ease, even out of steep ramps. The windshield is banked so there are no chips from rocks and the fog lights are great for catching deer on dark highways at night, making it safer. It passes and picks up fine and looks pretty too. I have never had any issues with it and have driven 113,000 miles. I highly recommend this very fine car. For reference, I have also owned a Yukon, Sequoia, Mercedes, and Volvo.

This is a fantastic vehicle! I would definitely buy it again and again. It makes me feel special and I'm sure it will make others envious too. The handling is great with good power, and the ride is smooth without feeling too floaty. All the little details like the seat warmers, cup holders, seat position controls, and side mirror heaters are functional, solid, and well thought-out. It's perfect for driving alone or with a carload of kids. I opted for the base model and installed a custom DVD player for the back, which cost much less than getting the Touring model with its DVD option. The climate controls can be a bit tricky to figure out, but they work well.

The Acura MDX is a blast to drive! It rides so smoothly that it feels like you're driving a car rather than an SUV, thanks to its low-to-the-ground design. The interior is fantastic, complete with a tail camera that displays what's behind you on the navigation screen when you're in reverse. Plus, the voice-activated navigator system means you don't have to fiddle with buttons to get directions. With room for seven, it's definitely worth the price!

This vehicle has experienced some issues with the transmission and power steering. Despite the fact that there are service bulletins out for these issues, Acura has not taken any action since it is not under warranty. However, I am confident that with proper attention and care, these issues can be resolved effectively.

Overall, it's a pretty nice car. However, I did experience some issues with the front air vent falling off in my hand and the rear speaker covers being easily pried off without tools. Additionally, the interior design is a bit bland and the car handles like the Queen Mary II.

One year and 9000 miles have been reasonable. However, I have noticed that there is more than usual hunting for gears (between 4th and 5th), even on mildly sloping roads. Additionally, I have found that the dealership services are not up to par. They use recycled engine oil that is not the recommended SAE 5-20 but 5-30. For my next simple oil change, I will try DIY.
