The Acura MDX is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV with three-row seating produced by the Japanese automaker Honda under its luxury Acura division since 2000. The alphanumeric moniker stands for "Multi-Dimensional" luxury. It has ranked as the second-best selling mid-size luxury SUV after the Lexus RX in the U.S.

First generation (YD1; 2001)
Derived from Honda's Global mid-size platform which underpins cars like the Honda Accord, Acura TL, TSX and Odyssey, it is powered by a J35A3 3.5 L SOHC 24 valve V6 engine with VTEC. Curb weight is 4,451 lb (2,019 kg), with a 106.3 in (2,700 mm) wheelbase and 8 in (200 mm) of ground clearance. The cargo floor can flip up to provide two additional seats. The vehicle is designed to hold 7 passengers, but the third row seats are small and only seat two, in contrast to the Odyssey and Pilot whose third row holds three passengers.
The vehicle features an automatic four wheel drive system (named VTM-4) that engages during off the line acceleration as well as when wheel slippage is detected. Additionally, the system offers a lock mode which can be activated and operated at low speeds and provides permanent 4WD and the equivalent of a locked rear differential; designed for climbing steep hills and getting out of stuck situations. To reduce drivetrain noise and increase fuel efficiency, the system runs as front wheel drive during normal cruising. The VTM-4 AWD system in the MDX has the same design as the VTM-4 systems found in the Honda Pilot and Honda Ridgeline. It is different than Honda's "RealTime AWD" system in the Honda CR-V and other models in that it can lock and it attempts to predict when traction will be lost and apply power to all four wheels before slippage occurs (by monitoring throttle inputs).
The navigation system and DVD entertainment system (also popular on other Honda/Acura models, such as the CR-V and Odyssey) options were mutually exclusive in the 2002 model. Both could be ordered at the same time since the 2003 model. The navigation option comes with a backup camera since the 2003 model. Since 2005, the navigation system featured information from Zagat about restaurants and other points of interest. The 2003 model was rated as Ultra Low Emission Vehicle. The United States Environmental Protection Agency estimates 23 mpg‑US (10 L/100 km; 28 mpg‑imp) highway and 17 mpg‑US (14 L/100 km; 20 mpg‑imp) city.
The first two model years' 3.5-liter V6 engine produces 240 hp (179 kW) and 245 lb⋅ft (332 N⋅m) of torque from 3000 to 5000 rpm. For the 2003 model, the engine was improved to produce 20 hp (15 kW) more power than the earlier models, and the wheel designs were updated. The 2004 through 2006 engine received a modest increase in power and produces 265 hp (198 kW) and 253 lb⋅ft (343 N⋅m). The 2004 model is credited with a top speed of 137 mph, and a 0-60 time of 7.1 seconds. The 2004 model features dual tail pipes instead of the single pipe in earlier models, side curtain airbags, new head lights and tail lights, and new wheels. Some chrome trimmings on the 2004 model use matte finish to distinguish from the polished shiny finish on earlier models. Little changed for the MDX during the 2006 model year with a few minor revisions to the vehicle's chrome and faux wood interior trim which could now be had with a dark grey wood (as opposed to reddish wood on earlier models), and also a black dash and steering wheel in tan interiors.

No recalls or effort by Acura (contacted by me) to assist with fix. Replacement isn't readily available, nor is a dealer loaner. Part is $1202.75. Vehicle is 2009 with only 89,7XX miles.

- Summary: The battery has been drained on three separate occasions this year (2021). I replaced the battery after the first occurrence. Each time I have had to use a battery jump to restart the vehicle which sufficed to get it operating and return home. On the last occasion, the car started to display dash board warning messages before arriving at home after driving only 15 miles. This came with a fully charged battery installed to get the car restarted. Previously I could see no error codes, but following this latest incident the AWD error code 77-01 is displayed by an OBD reader. The vehicle began to run roughly and flashed many dashboard warnings as the battery began to draw down to zero power. Latest incident required a battery replacement instead of just a jump to restart.

AT 5:15 PM ON 11/5, THURSDAY, IT WAS DARK AND RAINING AS SHE WAS HEADING EAST ON US ROUTE 12 CLOSE TO THE ARCELORMITTAL USA OFFICE AND SLIPPED, VEERED OFF THE ROAD AND SUV ROLLED OVER AND CART WHEELED AND FELL IN A DITCH. THE SUV WAS UPSIDE DOWN WHEN I ARRIVED AFTER A FIRST RESPONDER CALLED ME FROM THE SCENE. NOT SURE WHY SHE VEERED OFF WHEN SHE WAS ON THE LEFT MOST LANE. SHE SUDDENLY CROSSED 2 LANES AND SHOULDER AND ENDED UP IN A DITCH. SHE WAS NOT FATIGUED SINCE IT WAS LESS THAN 3 MIN SINCE SHE LEFT FROM THE OFFICE AND WE HAVE BLUE TOOTH HANDSFREE IN OUR 2009 ACURA MDX TECH. NOT SURE IF THE AIR BAG WENT OFF FALSELY OR IF SHE HAD A TIRE BURST. I KNOW BOTH FRONT TIRES WERE FLAT WHEN I SAW IT IN THE SALVAGE YARD. ALL SHE RECALLS IS AIR BAGS GOING OFF - NOT SURE IF THEY DEPLOYED BEFORE OR AFTER SHE HIT THE DITCH... I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share how much I love my MDX. It's definitely my favorite vehicle I've ever had! I was lucky enough to find a pre-owned 2009 MDX with the Technology package in black with black interior. I looked at several mid-size SUVs, but the MDX really stood out to me as the best value for my money.

I've only had the car for two weeks, but I'm really enjoying all the features, especially the way this car customizes everything from the driver's seat, AC, and keyless memory system. The steering is accurate and direct on center, but it took some time to get used to as I used to drive an Odyssey. The power is soft at first, but it comes on strong when you push it. I love the transmission and shifter as it is quick on the shifts and doesn't hesitate like other systems. The SH-AWD is kinda neat, and I haven't used it but once in a turn, but it's nice to have and gives me great confidence when driving. The mileage on a trip to the bay area was 20, and in the city, it seems to be around 16. So far, everything is good! I'm looking forward to years of driving.

For comfort and luxury, it really can't be beaten. The design is sharp, especially the front grill and badge. While I do wish the city gas mileage were a bit better, it's not bad on the highway.

I'm so glad I chose this car after considering all the options like BMW, Mercedes, Enclave, Audi, and Toyota. The sport package was the deciding factor for me and I'm thrilled with the handling and excellent seating. The controls are also very user-friendly. According to Edmunds, the cost of ownership seems relatively strong, but only time will tell. It would be great if the car had a 6-speed transmission after two years, which it looks like the 2010 model will have. I was a bit hesitant when I found out that some of the parts were built in Canada, but overall I'm still very happy with my purchase!

In December 2008, we purchased our first MDX. Unfortunately, my wife was T-boned on the driver's side at a major intersection after only 5400 miles. Despite the $20K in damage, I was impressed with how well the vehicle took the direct hit and protected my wife from serious injury. The other vehicle was totaled, but our MDX held up remarkably well given the location and speed of the impact. We decided to get it fixed and even bought another one. Although they may be pricey, MDXs are known for their safety and dependability.

Despite owning the car for only 13 months, I have unfortunately experienced a number of issues. Within the first week of ownership, the Air Bag warning light appeared and it was discovered that the side B-pillar air bag was loose. Additionally, after only 3,000 miles, the car began to pull to the side badly due to misalignment. While these issues were frustrating, I am pleased to say that they were resolved under warranty. Although, I did experience another issue with the gas door not staying closed, which was also resolved under warranty. Finally, after 6 months of ownership, the driver's side window motor failed and required replacement. In contrast, my previous '03 Mitsubishi Montero only required oil changes, tire replacements, and one new set of brakes over the 6 years and 55,000 miles that I owned it. Despite these challenges, I remain confident in my decision to purchase an Acura and look forward to a more positive ownership experience in the future.

This SUV looks good on the outside, but unfortunately, I have been experiencing some issues with it. I purchased it in September with only 69k miles on it, but after about 3 months, I started hearing a whirling noise coming from underneath the vehicle while driving on the highway. At first, I thought it was a wheel bearing, but after taking it to my mechanic, he ruled that out and suggested it could be the Torque Converter. However, I still believe it might be the propeller shaft. Additionally, the engine sounds horrible and I suspect it might be the pulleys. Although this vehicle is quite expensive when brand new, I am glad I didn't buy it brand new. I have decided to go back to Toyota because I have been disappointed with Acura (Honda).

I've been driving my Sport/Ent MDX for 12000 miles now and I must say, the drive-ability of this SUV is impeccable. As other reviewers have mentioned, I'm not entirely convinced it has 300HP, but it's definitely enough. What I love most about it is the smooth and quiet ride, which is exactly why I bought it. The stereo is good, although not earth shattering, and the navigation system is good too, but it does have a few too many 'warning' prompts. However, unlike other systems, it can be programmed on the fly. I particularly enjoy driving at night and the headlights are fantastic. I did have one issue with the compliance bushings, but the dealership was very accommodating and provided me with a loaner. The only thing I don't like is the key fob and I think this luxury auto should have keyless options. As for the transmission, which is designed to help you brake, it's not the most comfortable, but it is sporty and smooth.

You got the MDX a month ago after thorough study and many of your colleagues had bought it previously. Overall, it is a nice SUV and worth its price. The handling is good and the drive is smooth, although the steering wheel is a bit restrained to turn. As for the exterior, you like the front design, but find the tail to be a bit unappealing. The power is good, and you especially like the manumatic shift which is sure to satisfy sporty drivers. All in all, it's a typical sport SUV.

I'm glad to hear that you're satisfied with the car after driving it around town and on long trips. The 3rd row seating works fine, although it may not be suitable for tall people. The car has a nice pick up and is more spacious than it appears from the outside. The SH-AWD works great in slick snowy conditions. Although you bought the base package, the sound quality is still plenty good. However, the leather seats are not up to BMW standards. The Bluetooth can be somewhat cumbersome, as it only has voice recognition. I can't emphasize enough how much leg and shoulder room there is. From an SUV perspective, it's fun to drive. Although I expected scheduled free maintenance at this price, it's still one of the best buys in the segment.
