2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 problems
The Chevrolet Silverado is a range of trucks manufactured by General Motors under the Chevrolet brand. Introduced for the 1999 model year, the Silverado is the successor to the long-running Chevrolet C/K model line. Taking its name from the top trim level from the Chevrolet C/K series, the Silverado is offered as a series of full-size pickup trucks, chassis cab trucks, and medium-duty trucks. The fourth generation of the model line was introduced for the 2019 model year.
The Chevrolet Silverado shares mechanical commonality with the identically related GMC Sierra; GMC ended the use of the C/K nomenclature a model generation prior to Chevrolet. In Mexico, high-trim level versions of the Silverado use the Chevrolet Cheyenne name (not to be confused with the 2003 concept). Competing against the Ford F-Series, Ram Pickup, Toyota Tundra, and Nissan Titan, the Silverado is among the best-selling vehicles in the United States, having sold over 12 million trucks since its introduction in 1998 as a 1999 model year.
History
The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).
For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.
In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

Common 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 problems
The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues include engine problems, electrical problems, and brake problems.
Engine problems are one of the most frequently reported issues with the 2020 Silverado 3500. The engine is said to run rough while idling, and there are also reports of crank start issues with the Duramax Silverado engine. The problems may be due to defective piston rings, faulty sensors, or carbon buildup on the throttle body. The engine problems are not limited to the Silverado, as similar issues have been reported with other GM vehicles such as the Escalade, Yukon, Sierra, Suburban, and Tahoe.
Electrical problems are another common issue with the 2020 Silverado 3500. Owners have reported problems with the infotainment screen, radio, backup camera, and other components. Some have reported issues with the back-up camera developing a fish-eye distortion, making it difficult to see how close objects are behind the vehicle. Others have reported problems with the radio continuously turning on and off. The electrical problems are not just an inconvenience, as they can also pose a safety hazard. GM has reported that the electrical problems in the Silverado are so dangerous that they could cause an accident. There is also a recall related to the positive cable of the battery, which could cause intermittent electrical issues, leading to the truck stalling or a fire due to electrical arcing.
Brake problems are also a common issue with the 2020 Silverado 3500. Owners have reported issues with the brake system failure, with multiple dash warnings notifying of brake failure, electronic stability control failure, and service brake system warning. There is also a recall related to the bolts used to attach the front and/or rear brake calipers, which may not have been heat-treated and may break under load. This recall affects over 20,000 trucks and cars. The defective brakes are a significant safety concern, especially for a full-size pickup truck built to transport heavy loads.
In summary, the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 has several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues include engine problems, electrical problems, and brake problems. The engine problems include rough idling and crank start issues. The electrical problems include issues with the infotainment screen, radio, backup camera, and other components. - VIN: 1GC4YTEY7LF
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The contact owns a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500. The contact stated that while depressing the brake pedal, the tailgate brake light failed to illuminate. In addition, the contact stated that while a trailer was hitched to the vehicle, the message "Check Trailer Connection" was displayed, and other unknown warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where it was diagnosed; however, the failure was not identified. The vehicle was taken to another local dealer, Davis-Moore Chevrolet (8200 W Kellogg Dr, Wichita, KS 67209) for a second opinion. The vehicle was diagnosed; however, the cause of the failure was not identified. Upon further inspection, the contact related the failure to Technical Service Bulletin: 20-NA-198; however, the second local dealer advised the contact that the fix might not repair the vehicle. The contact stated that the failure had progressed over time. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 26,000.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-25
- VIN: 1GC4YVEY5LF
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: We tow a 2024 Grand Design Solitude 310GK with our 2020 Chevy Silverado 3500 diesel truck. We are getting frequent but intermittent loss of our trailer brakes during towing. As you can imagine this is a serious safety issue. We will be towing and receive a message on the display "Trailer Brakes Disconnected" then typically followed by "Service Trailer Brakes". This has been happening more frequently over the past 3 months. Imagine driving down a hill with a 15K pound rv pushing you and there are NO brakes on the 5th wheel. It is extremely scary and dangerous. I've researched on the internet and Facebook and there seems to be a "Technical Bulletin" from GM Bulletin No.: 23-NA-149 Date: September, 2023 recommending the replacement of the Trailer Brake Control Module. I've called to have the dealer replace our brake control module but it is not covered because it is a "Bulletin" and not a "recall". This is absurd and the manufacturer should take care of this known issue.

The contact made a left turn to avoid a ditch. The contact stated that the vehicle then rolled to a stop. The contact shifted to low gear, turned the hazard lights on, and was able to drive to the residence. Upon inspecting the vehicle, the contact noticed that the brake fluid was leaking. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer, where the passenger's side rear brake pads, brake disk, and brake calipers were replaced. The contact stated that the failure recurred while driving. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where the driver's side rear brake pads, brake disk, and brake calipers were replaced; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was towed to a second dealer, Duke Chevrolet GMC (2016 N Main St, Suffolk, VA 23434), where it was diagnosed that the passenger's side rear brake pads, brake disk, and brake calipers were severely damaged. Additionally, the failure had damaged the rim of the rear passenger's side inner tire. The vehicle was being repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was opened. UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-07
- VIN: 1GC4YUE74LF
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: This problem concerns faulty emergency brakes. The issue was discovered in the driveway, when I engaged the parking brake with the vehicle in park and my foot on the brake. The Service Emergency Brake light came on and stayed on. When the problem was investigated at the dealership, it was found that the brake pad abradable material had delaminated from the brake shoe and was floating loose inside the drum. This same condition was found on 3 of the 4 brake shoes. Based on the appearance of the parts it did no appear they fell off when the parking brake was engaged, but had been loose for some time. With loose parts floating inside the brake drum sooner or later they will move and could lock up the rear wheel. The Chevrolet service department did not seem to be concerned with condition. A big concern is that the parking brake needs to be engaged to discover the issue. Many people rarely if ever engage their parking brake and could be driving around with loose parts in their wheels. The fact that this happened in just three years indicates the parts were produced with a faulty bond material. The abradable should never just fall off. On a backup safety system that is required on all vehicles, this issue should be taken more seriously by the manufacturer
TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-24
- VIN: 1GC4YUEY6LF
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: Tire size LT275 65 R20. Driving on Interstate Sunday September 24, 2023 the driver's side back tire blew out causing damage to the rim and side panel of the truck and bumper. We were pulling a 35 foot fifth wheel. We were able to successfully pull over to shoulder but had to wait over an hour for help. The blow out did do some damage to the fifth wheel also. Felt very unsafe until Georgia Champs arrived behind our camper. Our truck had about 16,000 miles on it and the tires. Last October the passenger side rear went flat (12,000 miles on the tires) and were able to pull over before a blowout. There we were stuck for about 3 hours on an interstate and had to change the tire ourselves because couldn't get someone out and felt unsafe waiting any longer. Both tires were on rear of truck and the blowout left over $6000 damage according to the estimate not including damage to the RV.We had no warning alert on the truck and a Goodyear salesman said the tires were not defective. But, we did not run over any apparent road hazard. We felt unsafe and were lucky the blowout didn't cause us to lose control of the truck or RV. Seems hard to believe this can happen twice in less than a year with pretty new tires. We always inspect the tires and make sure the tires are properly inflated according to the truck specifications.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-06
- VIN: 1GC4YVEY6LF
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Fan pulley broke in half, snapped fan belt, damaged fan and caused truck to overheat. Truck would not turn off when overheated, even when fan was not working, so truck kept getting hotter. Dealer said this is the 3rd one they've seen this week
TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-29
- VIN: 1GC4YVEY1LF
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: The outside tread separated without a drop in air pressure or without any warning, other than a wobble before the tire blew out. This occurred at 65 mph (posted speed limit) on a busy interstate. I was only able to avoid a wreck because I was traveling in the right lane and was able to immediately pull off the side of the road. The tire destroyed my inner wheel well and outer trim, causing over $1,400 damage. The tread flew into the left lane and was run over by every vehicle traveling in the left lane. I turned the tire in to the General Manager at the Williamsburg Goodyear Store, [XXX] . He gave me the number to call for Goodyear claims. I called the number twice during business hours 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm CST only to reach a voicemail that said they were on their lunch break. The voicemail did not give an option to leave a message. I reported this the next day via email to [XXX] . He said he would give Goodyear Claims my telephone number and email address and they would get back to me. I have not heard back from Goodyear. My insurance company has photos of the damage and paid $1,200 for the damage and I paid $200 for my co-pay to have my truck repaired. I have photos of the tire and damage that I can provide. Because I have zero faith in a tire that blew without warning with 41,800 miles on a 55,000 thread wear warranty, I purchased 4 new tires from another manufacturer. [XXX] said this tire was discontinued and wasn't available to replace the blown tire even if I wanted to replace it. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-15
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: The contact owns a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500. The contact stated that after driving at an undisclosed speed and towing a fifth wheel, after visual inspection, the contact observed that due to the routing of exhaust system, heat from the exhaust had started to melt the front wall of the trailer. The contact was concerned that the trailer battery and propane tank were resting on the other side wall, which could potentially cause a fire. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but advised the contact that the exhaust could not be rerouted. The failure mileage was 40,000.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-30
- VIN: 1GC4YSE78LF
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: I purchased a certified pre-owned 2020 Chevy Silverado 3500HD (6.6 Gas) November 2021. Within the next few weeks, I noticed brake squeaking that kept getting worse and the truck braking system would not stop like the 2500 I had traded in when I purchased the 3500HD. I had to adjust the trailer brake gain control up to as high as 9 or 9.5, should not have to adjust that high. I had trouble stopping at intersections and quick /emergency braking situations while pulling our trailer. This tells me the truck braking system is not working properly. Prior to leaving on a trip, I was having squeaking noise from the brakes that got louder and louder and more frequent. The dealer (Champion Chevrolet) checked the truck and brakes and told me it had the wrong brake pads and had replaced them. The first time I pulled off the interstate on my trip to Florida, the brakes began to squeak as they did before. This happened during the entire trip. Over the next few weeks after returning from my trip I had a couple of close calls trying to stop at traffic signals. My breaks would not stop me and I went into the intersection barely missing other vehicles. I am almost to the point of parking the truck until the dealer can make repairs that will fix the issues, but we use the truck to pull a trailer that is a major part on our income. I’ve had the truck back to the dealership I purchased the truck from and they keep saying it is a brake pad issue. They have changed the pads twice so far (I think), and within days the squeaking and noise starts again. Periodically I keep getting a message (service trailer brake system) on my dash display that is difficult to get the warning to stop displaying. The trailer brakes had been checked several times and I have hooked other trucks to the trailer and it works fine. So, the issue is with my truck and the braking system. [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
