2016 Mercedes-benz Sprinter 2500 problems
The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is a light commercial vehicle (van) built by Mercedes-Benz Group AG of Stuttgart, Germany as a large van, chassis cab, minibus, and pickup truck. In the past, the Sprinter had been sold under the Mercedes-Benz, Dodge, and Freightliner nameplates. In the U.S., it was built from complete knock down (CKD) kits by Freightliner. Re-badged and re-engined Sprinters were also sold by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles as the Volkswagen LT and the Volkswagen Crafter. They are now primarily marketed by Mercedes-Benz.
In the Mercedes-Benz van lineup, the Sprinter is the largest model offered, followed by the mid-size Vito (aka Viano, V-Class, and EQV) and small Citan.
First generation (1995–2006, T1N)
Europe
The first generation Sprinter was launched in Europe in 1995 to replace the famous but outdated T1 Transporter van dating from 1977. Compared to the T1, the Sprinter had reduced the aerodynamic drag and moved the engine 290 mm (11 in) further forward to increase cabin space. It was the first Mercedes-Benz product to carry a name rather than an alphanumeric designation. It was released with four-wheel disc brakes equipped with an antilock braking system and was driven by the most powerful diesel engine in its class, with a power output of 90 kW (120 hp). The Sprinter was voted International Van of the Year for 1995.
The styling was updated in 2000 and 2002, accompanied by technical changes that included standard electronic stability control (2002).

Common 2016 Mercedes-benz Sprinter 2500 problems
The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 2016 is a popular van known for its dependability and versatility. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. These issues are often related to the diesel engine, exhaust system, and electronics.
- Broken Exhaust Flex Pipe: The 2007 or 906 chassis with the V6 OM642 diesel engine, including the 2016 model, may suffer from a broken exhaust flex pipe. This issue can cause leaks from the exhaust, which can melt nearby wiring and cause the engine to shut off or not restart.
- The No Start Count Down Dep-Counter: The Sprinter 2010 and newer models, including the 2016 model, with Bluetec may start counting down any remaining start cycles if there are issues with the DEF level or Nox sensors. If the countdown has started, it's recommended to have the van diagnosed before it gets to the last few remaining start cycles.
- A Clogged DPF: The Diesel Particular Filter (DPF) in the Sprinter can gather soot until it reaches a level to perform regeneration. If the ash builds up inside the DPF, it can clog and restrict exhaust flow, leading to reduced power or limp mode.
- Reduced Power / Limp Mode: Sprinters have a Limp Mode feature, which is activated if the engine is pushed too hard. This safety feature reduces engine power to prevent further damage to affected components.
- Oil Cooler Leaks: The 2007 to present models with the OM642 engine, including the 2016 model, may experience oil cooler leaks. The oil cooler seals are the most common source of engine oil leaks. These leaks can be expensive to repair due to the difficulty of accessing the oil cooler.
- Glow Plug Problems: The glow plugs and modules in the Sprinter, like all diesel engines, will not last forever. Sometimes the plugs will break off in the cylinder head, requiring a special tool to drill out and extract the glow plug without removing the cylinder head.
- Injector Issue or Black Death: The copper seal ring located in the middle of the injectors can deteriorate, causing combustion gasses to escape. This can lead to the accumulation of black tar and coal-like material over the fuel injectors, which can eventually cause engine failure.
These common problems with the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 2016 are based on complaints from owners and can help potential buyers and current owners be aware of potential issues they may encounter. Regular maintenance and addressing these issues promptly can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the Sprinter.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-22
- VIN: 8BRPE7DD2GE
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING,STRUCTURE
- Summary: The primary issue is the seal on the air conditioning unit, which is on top of the Sprinter van. Prior to purchasing it, we read multiple reviews that the seal breaks frequently and water pours into the cabin. It is a known defect and quite prevalent. Whenever we drive through rain and the seal is intact, we get drips of rain. When the seal needs to be replaced, gallons of water pour into the cabin. Replacing the seal costs thousands of dollars and we've replaced it a few times. We travel with buckets and a dozen bath towels in case we drive through rain. Seals for the air conditioning unit only last about a year before a new one is needed. Our local dealership is aware that this a widespread problem on Sprinters but Mercedes is refusing to to fix the issue. Secondly, the interior lights do not work. We've had them replaced and they quickly stop working. I'm not certain how prevalent this issue is in other Sprinters, but it is an issue that does not appear to have a long-time fix on our model.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-11-13
- VIN: WDAPE7CD0GP
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: There is a known issue and recall for wheel speed sensors on Mercedes Sprinter 3500 models. However, this same issue applied to 2500 models also. Along with other RV owners, I have just experienced this problem. I was in city traffic when all the sudden multiple warning lights came on: "ESP, visit workshop", "Brake force distribution, visit workshop", ABS warning light, ESP, warning light, collision prevention malfunction warning light, check engine light with fault code U0416. The presence of all these errors, beeping, red messages sounds extremely scary to any driver. The fact that it says brake force distribution isn't working properly suggests a hazardous condition that could lead to a crash if brakes are not working properly. Since this is being caused by a failing wheel speed sensor, these should all be replaced and the recall expanded to include other models like mine.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-10-28
- VIN: WDAPE7CD0GP
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: My 2016 Sprinter is suffering from a failing EGR valve that's causing intermittent power loss. The issue started after only 25000mi on the odometer. No errors are shown, nothing indicates malfunction. The problem is quite severe and presenting itself through random power loss. When accelerating the car will jerk and lose acceleration force suddenly. Driving uphill is the worst and producing constant jerking. Once moving at a good speed it's less notable but still present. The main safety concern is that the behavior is unpredictable and in situations where it's necessary to accelerate into a road with traffic, this can lead to a hazardous when the car doesn't accelerate as intended. In multiple occasions I was unable to properly speed up and get moving and thus blocking traffic behind me and forcing them to slow down or change lanes. The Mercedes dealer diagnosed a malfunctioning EGR valve on the edge of failing completely which would put the Sprinter in "limp home mode" which has limited power output to prevent further damage. Since this is a known issue and the EGR valves have been failing frequently with various Sprinter models, these should be recalled and replaced! Currently, it's not even possible to get this issue addressed. The EGR valves are back-ordered and not available for 6 MONTHS! That's 6 months of limping through traffic with the potential of the valve failing completely. Unacceptable!
