1997 Acura Cl problems
The Acura CL is a midsize grand tourer manufactured by Honda's Acura brand from 1996 until 2003. The CL is often thought to have been a replacement for the Acura Legend coupe. It was not directly related to the first gen TL either, a Japanese-built model which replaced the Vigor and had a longitudinal engine layout. With the advent of the second generation TL in 1999, the transverse engined CL became more precisely a TL coupe. All Acura CLs were built at Honda's plant in East Liberty, Ohio, which is also the plant that builds the Honda Civic. The second generation TL and the Honda Accord upon which the Acura CLs were based, are built at Honda's plant in Marysville, Ohio, a few miles away from East Liberty. The CL was the first Acura to be built in the United States.
Following the end of the 1995 model year, the Acura Legend coupe disappeared from Acura's lineup when the sedan version was renamed the Acura RL. The CL was not a direct replacement for the Legend coupe as it no longer shared the same chassis as its sedan counterpart, and was not made in Japan, unlike the RL. Because Acura no longer had a suitable Legend coupe replacement, they created this vehicle. With the release of the TL and 3.5RL in 1996, Acura transitioned to alphanumeric and/or two-letter names, naming of all of its vehicles (with the exception of the Integra which kept its name until the 2001 model year). Although the CL was considered to be a satisfactory vehicle, it never gained traction or popularity like the other Acura coupes.
First generation (1996–1999)
For the 1997 model year, early models having been licensed as 1996 models, the CL was offered with either a 3.0 L J30 V6 producing 200 hp (149 kW), or a 145 hp (108 kW) 2.2 L (F22B1) I4 engine. The 1998 and 1999 models featured a 2.3 L 4-cylinder (F23A1) engine with 150 hp (112 kW).
Both the 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder CL offered a "Premium" trim level which offered leather upholstery (with heated front seats in the 3.0), and in the 3.0, an Acura/Bose stereo. For the 1999 model year, the "Premium" trim level was eliminated, and leather upholstery became standard on all models, as was a trunk cargo net. The alloy wheel design was different on the 3.0 for each year, moving from a five-spoke design (MY 1997) to a seven-spoke design (MY 1998), to a different multi-spoke alloy design for the 1999 model year. The 2.2/2.3 CL used a six-spoke design for 1997, then moved to a 5-spoke double-prong design for 1998 and 1999. The 4-cylinder model had an option for a 5-speed manual transmission. The CL also featured galvanized body panels which helps to prevent rust.

Common 1997 Acura Cl problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the 1997 Acura CL 2.2, common problems with this car include:
- Electrical Problems: Some owners have experienced issues with the battery, alternator, and the EGR valve. Electrical problems can lead to starting issues, charging system malfunctions, and emissions control problems.
- Engine Reliability: While the engine of the 1997 Acura CL 2.2 is generally praised for its durability, the automatic transmission has been highlighted as a weak point. The engine is known for its longevity and robustness, often outlasting other components of the vehicle.
- General Reliability Concerns: Despite the engine's durability, the automatic transmission has been a common point of failure in the 1997 Acura CL 2.2. Owners have reported the need for transmission rebuilds due to slipping and shifting issues, especially in cold conditions.
These problems can impact the overall performance and reliability of the 1997 Acura CL 2.2, requiring owners to address them promptly to ensure the longevity and functionality of their vehicles.
Are Acura CL reliable?
The Acura CL Coupe is a reliable, solid vehicle. While I have had to fix a few things on the car (the ignition switch was recalled for example), overall, I have had to do very little to maintain this car. My biggest complaint is the mediocre gas mileage, but it is a V6 to be fair.
What is the Acura CL based on?
The second generation of the Acura CL was introduced in 2000 as a 2001 model. It was based on the Acura TL platform and they were built on the same assembly line. The Acura CL was initially launched to replace the Legend Coupe, but it was a completely different vehicle.
Is Acura expensive to maintain?
Even though Acura is a luxury car brand, its maintenance costs are relatively affordable, especially compared to other car brands in the category. But with long-lasting cars like Acuras, repair costs can add up over the years. An extended warranty may help keep expenses low while offering perks and convenience.
Is Acura high quality?
Acura ranks high in reliability, with notable safety and fuel efficiency ratings and low average repair costs for a luxury brand. RepairPal places Acura second among car brands for reliability, highlighting its low chance of severe repairs and lower-than-average repair costs, making it a cost-effective luxury option.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-04-30
- VIN: 19UYA1159VL
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: MY CAR IS SERVICED AT AN AUTHORIZED DEALER, TISCHER OF LAUREL WHO HAS PROVIDED ME WITH EXCELLENT CARE FOR MORE THAN A DECADE. MY MANUAL AND MY MECHANIC HAVE DETAILED PRETTY MUCH WHAT CAN BE EXPECTED AS A REPLACEMENT COST THROUGH THE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE. THAT IS WHAT LEADS ME TO THIS POINT, BEING DIAGNOSED WITH A BALL BEARING FALLING OUT OF THE PACKING IN THE FRONT DRIVE OF MY 2.2 CL WITH THE MILEAGE AND A RECORD THAT ANYONE WOULD WANT WAS A HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT. I?VE DONE SOME RESEARCH WHICH REVEALS A DESIGN DEFECT IN THE ACURA CL 2.2 WHICH MAY HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO WHY ACURA VOLUNTARILY DISCONTINUED THIS MODEL. THERE IS NO INDICATION IN MY OWNER?S MANUAL THAT THIS WILL EVER BE A PROBLEM. AGAIN I HAVE MAINTAINED MY CAR AND MY MECHANICS CAN VERIFY THAT IT IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION FOR ITS AGE. THIS LEADS ME TO TRYING TO UNDERSTAND WHY I HAVE HAD TO PAY FOR THIS SERVICE THAT SEEMS UNLIKELY? I BELIEVE THIS IS A DESIGN DEFECT THAT SHOULD BE COVERED BY THE MANUFACTURER AND NOT THE CONSUMER. THE AXLE WAS REPLACED IN 1999 AND HAS NO TYPE OF PROBLEM THAT CAN BE CONSIDERED MAJOR. IF WE WERE DISCUSSING A CAR THAT WAS ITS CURRENT AGE AND 250,000 OR MORE MILES I WOULD NOT CARE, CONSIDERING MY DRIVING SKILLS AND MAINTENANCE RECORD. BASED ON MY RESEARCH, THERE ARE DESIGN FLAWS IN MY BELOVED CL 2.2 WHICH WERE NOT DISCLOSED TO THE BUYER AND WERE NOT A VOLUNTARY RECALL ISSUED. INSTEAD, THE DECISION WAS MADE TO DISCONTINUE THIS MODEL. IN LATER MODELS ACURA RL AND TSX THE AXEL IS DESIGNED DIFFERENTLY. HONDA/ACURA KNEW OF THIS PROBLEM. I CONTACTED MR. IWAMURA OF ACURA WHO SAID THEY CAN'T DO ANYTHING BECAUSE THE CAR IS OUT OF WARRENTY? THERE IS NO WAY A CONSUMER WOULD KNOW ABOUT THIS PROBLEM UNTIL THE WARRANTY IS OUT. CAN YOU HELP WITH ACURA TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE? *TR

This is my second Acura and I must say, I really enjoyed my original Integra, but the 2.2cl is even sportier and more fun to drive! It's been thoroughly reliable, quick to respond, and easy to handle. I've only had to do the usual repairs, like replacing the brake pads and timing belt at 90,000 miles.
-
This car is not only reliable, but it's also a blast to drive. It's great on gas and requires minimal maintenance, especially if you keep up with regular oil changes and keep it clean.
-
I really like this car, but there are a few minor issues that the company should have addressed. The warranty is a great benefit, but it's worth noting that there is a $45 diagnostic fee if you take it to the shop, unless it's covered by the warranty. The seats can be uncomfortable on long road trips and are a bit difficult to maintain. In smaller cities, it can be challenging to find someone to fix it.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my 2.2 CL that I purchased brand new in 1997. Even after 125k miles, it's still running wonderfully! I've made sure to perform the required maintenance every 7500 miles and it's never had any problems other than the replacement of worn parts like brakes, tires, headlights, and so on. This car truly deserves the highest rating in reliability. I'm not entirely sure if the other reviewers just got lemons, but I do believe that driving style, weather, road conditions, and the quality of your mechanic can influence how well the car holds up. Thanks for reading!
-
It's great to hear that you're enjoying your car! I'm glad that the review you read was helpful in your decision-making process. Your car sounds like it's in fantastic condition, with great paint and new Fuzoni racing speed rated tires. The V-6 engine definitely adds some serious power to the car. If you're looking for something with a bit less power, the regular coupe with Honda Accord LX power might be a better fit for you. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

I purchased my Acura as a brand new model in '96 and have enjoyed driving it. However, I have experienced some issues with squeaks and rattles since the beginning. Despite several attempts by the dealership, these issues were not resolved. Unfortunately, the car has not been as reliable as I had hoped, and I have had to replace several parts including the driver side window motor, radiator fan, oxygen sensor, and transmission. Although I have previously owned three Honda products without any issues, I am hesitant to purchase another Acura in the future.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with a car I bought in 2000 with 45,000 miles on it. Since then, I've put about 32,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, I've had a few issues with it, including a check engine problem that cost $250+, a failing window motor that cost $300+, and a bad alternator that cost $300+. However, I've had a much better experience with my 1989 Honda Accord (186,000 mi.), which has only cost me less than $300 in repairs during the same time period. Additionally, I've found that the tires for this car can be quite expensive and difficult to find, costing about $150-200 EACH. Overall, I've found this car to be overrated. Thanks for listening!
