2004 Scion Xb problems
The Scion xB is a compact car (subcompact car in its first generation) made by Scion, a now-defunct fully owned division of Toyota, for the United States market. It is a box-shaped, 5-door hatchback.
First generation (XP30; 2003)
The first-generation xB was a lightly modified and rebadged version of the Japanese-market subcompact Toyota bB. It was a small hatchback based on the Toyota Echo/Yaris platform. The xB was one of two models in the lineup of Toyota's US-exclusive Scion division present at the brand's 2003 launch, the other being the xA, based on the Toyota ist. The car proved to be unexpectedly popular with senior drivers.
First-generation xB vs. first-generation bB
Only the first-generation models for both the xB and bB are related. Second-generation models are based upon different platforms.
To create the first-generation xB, the bB was modified from right- to left-hand drive, the front passenger area was also changed significantly with the bB's front bench seat replaced with bucket seats and the column-mounted shifter changed to a floor-mounted shifter.
The available drivetrains also differed. The bB was available with either the 1.3 L I4 2NZ-FE engine or the 1.5 L 1NZ-FE, mated exclusively to a 4-speed automatic transmission with available all wheel drive. The xB was only available with the 1NZ-FE that produced 108 hp (81 kW) and 105 lb⋅ft (142 N⋅m) in US spec, but offered both a 4-speed automatic or a 5-speed manual transmission. All-wheel drive was not offered on the xB.
The Toyota bB was equipped with a compact spare tire under the floor of the luggage area. On the Scion xB, a compact spare tire was stored under the left side of a raised rear cargo floor. Since the spare tire raised the cargo floor by several inches, a storage bin was added to the right of the spare tire to reclaim some of the lost storage space. A jack was stored under the driver's seat of the xB.
The Toyota bB had a pull-out storage tray under the passenger seat that the xB lacks.
The bB went on sale in February 2000, whereas the xB went on sale in June 2003 for the 2004 model year. Sales of the first-generation bB ended in December 2005, whereas the first-generation xB ended sales in June 2007.

Common 2004 Scion Xb problems
The Scion xB is a compact car that was produced from 2003 to 2015. While it is generally regarded as a reliable vehicle, there are some common problems that have been reported by owners of this car.
One of the most common issues with the Scion xB is faulty rear hatch handle assembly, which is particularly common in the 2005-2010 models. The plastic handle can break, making it difficult to open the rear hatch.
Another common problem with the Scion xB is engine problems, which have been reported by some owners of the 2008 model. These issues can include engine failure or excessive oil consumption, and they can be costly to repair.
Air conditioning issues have also been reported by some Scion xB owners, particularly of the 2006 model. These issues usually require a simple repair or recharge of the AC system.
In addition to these common problems, the Scion xB has also been known to have issues with its transmission, exhaust system, and paint and body. For example, some owners of the 2008 Scion xB have reported transmission failure, problems with the exhaust system, and paint and body issues
Overall, while the Scion xB is generally a reliable vehicle, it is important to be aware of these common problems and to ensure that the vehicle receives its recommended maintenance in order to avoid these issues. If you are considering purchasing a used Scion xB, it is also a good idea to check its service history to ensure that it has been well-maintained.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-03-03
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: IT HAD RAINED EARLIER IN THE DAY, BUT BY THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT, THE RAIN HAD BEEN OVER FOR A FEW HOURS. I WAS DRIVING AT 35 MPH, AND I REACHED A HILL IN THE ROAD, AND I PRESSED ON THE ACCELERATOR TO INCREASE MY MOMENTUM. I THEN EASED OFF THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL, BUT THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL DIDN'T EASE UP WITH ME. INSTEAD, IT KEPT GOING DOWN. I TRIED THE BRAKES. THEY WERE LOCKED UP. AFTER SEEING ALL THE HORROR STORIES OF TOYOTA'S FLOOR MATS, I IMMEDIATELY RIPPED MY FLOOR MAT OUT FROM UNDER MY FEET AND THREW IT IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. THE CAR CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE UP THE HILL. I TRIED THE BRAKES AGAIN. NOTHING. THEN I REACHED DOWN, AND TRIED TO PULL THE GAS PEDAL UP. I PULLED AS HARD AS I COULD, BUT THE PEDAL STAYED STUCK. I LOOKED DOWN AT MY FEET TO MAKE SURE THAT I WAS NOT ACCIDENTALLY PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR, BUT I WAS NOT. BY THIS POINT IN TIME, MY CAR HAD INCREASED ITS SPEED FROM THE 35 MPH TO 65 MPH. AS I CRESTED THE TOP OF THE HILL AND RAN THROUGH A STOP LIGHT, I SLAMMED ON MY BRAKES WITH ALL MY STRENGTH. IT TOOK ALL MY STRENGTH TO SLOW THE CAR DOWN TO ABOUT 40 MPH FROM THE 65 MPH IT HAD BEEN AT THE TOP OF THE HILL. I, THEN, SLIPPED THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL, AND CONTINUED PRESSING ON THE BRAKES, WHICH WERE STILL FIGHTING ME. THE CAR'S ENGINE WAS STILL REVVING AS IF I HAD MY FOOT FIRMLY PRESSED DOWN ON THE GAS. BY THE TIME I WAS 20 FT AWAY FROM ANOTHER INTERSECTION AND A RED LIGHT IN MY DIRECTION AND A GREEN LIGHT FOR THE CROSS-FLOWING TRAFFIC, I MANAGED TO GET MY CAR DOWN TO 10 MPH. I HAD NO TIME. I COULD EITHER FORCE IT INTO PARK OR GO SWIFTLY INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC IN THE INTERSECTION. SO I PUT IT IN PARK, BUT EVEN IN PARK THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO REV AS IF I STILL HAD MY FOOT PRESSING DOWN ON THE GAS PEDAL. THE ONLY THING THAT GOT THE ENGINE TO STOP REVVING WAS TURNING OFF THE VEHICLE, BUT EVEN THEN THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO GO FOR ANOTHER 10 TO 15 SECONDS. *TR
VISIBILITY,STRUCTURE,WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2011-10-09
- VIN: JTLKT324040
- Components: VISIBILITY,STRUCTURE,WHEELS
- Summary: WHEELS: PREMATURE TIRE WEAR (PRIOR TO TIRE MILEAGE WARRANTY) ALONG WITH UNEXPLAINABLE WARPING OF THE RIMS. TIRE BLOW OUT AND/OR HANDLING/STEERING ISSUES CAN CAUSE ACCIDENTS AND SAFETY HAZARDS, THEREBY PUTTING AN OWNER INTO A PHYSICAL DAMAGE SITUATION, AS WELL AS BY STANDERS. WIPERS: REAR WIPER FLUID DOES NOT SPRAY, STRAIGHT STREAM DOWN THE CENTER OF REAR WINDOW; WIPER BLADE DOESN'T CONTACT 'STRAIGHT' REAR WINDOW THEREBY DECREASING VISIBILITY WHICH IN TURNS INITIATES AND INTENSIFIES SAFETY/ACCIDENT HAZARDS, NOT TO MENTION DEFEATS THE NEED/USEFULNESS OF THE REARVIEW MIRROR. FRONT WINDSHIELD: THE 'STRAIGHT' UP AND DOWN FORM CAUSES IT TO BE A CATCH ALL RATHER THAN AN AERODYNAMIC DEFLECTOR, ALLOWING THE WINDSHIELD TO BECOME A PHYSICAL HAZARD, WHEN AN OBJECT HITS IT WITH PENETRATING FORCE. THE SECONDARY ISSUE IS NUMEROUS WINDSHIELD REPLACEMENTS, WHICH MOST INSURANCE COMPANIES DO NOT COVER THEREBY CAUSING RECURRING, AND TREMENDOUS, FINANCIAL HARDSHIP ON AN OWNER. REAR TAILGATE HATCH: BREAKS AND HANGS BY WIRING HARNESS ALONE, MAKING THE TAILGATE/REAR HATCH VIRTUALLY INACCESSIBLE AND UNUSABLE. THIS THEN BECOMES A NUISANCE FACTOR AS WELL AS A SAFETY HAZARD WHEN AN OWNER WOULD NEED TO ACCESS AND REMOVE THE SPARE TIRE. SINCE LICENSE PLATE ILLUMINATION IS REQUIRED BY LAW, A BROKEN HATCH HANDLE CLEARLY PUTS AN OWNER IN VIOLATION OF THIS LAW, THEREBY CAUSING LEGAL IMPLICATIONS AND EXCESS COST FACTORS WHEN HE OR SHE RECEIVES A TICKET FOR A NON-OPERATIONS TAG LIGHT. *TR

NO DAMAGE TO THE OTHER CAR BUT I WAS CITED FOR A MAJOR ACCIDENT, 1ST ONE IN 50 YRS OF DRIVING INCLUDING 15 AS A SCHOOL BUS DRIVER. I ALWAYS BELIEVED SOMETHING WASN'T RIGHT WITH THE BRAKES AND WITH THE CURRENT TOYOTA BRAKE PROBLEMS I BELIEVE THE SCION XB SHOULDN'T BE IGNORED. The Scion xB is a fantastic car that I absolutely love. Its amazing looks and spacious passenger room make it stand out from the crowd. Additionally, the engine is perfect for modifications and I was able to achieve an impressive 36MPG on the freeway. I highly recommend this car to anyone looking for a great ride. It's important to note that the car's value is unbeatable until you reach around 30 grand. Those who don't appreciate this car's genius are missing out on a truly remarkable vehicle. After all, it's not worth expecting stupidity to understand genius!

I absolutely love this car! As a 27-year old female, I have no regrets about my purchase. It's not only good-looking, but also has plenty of interior space and an incredible price. While some people have given me mixed reviews, I believe the nay-sayers are just set in their ways and afraid of anything new. The only downside is that my insurance is more expensive, as they seem to expect 20-something unmarried males to be buying the car. Additionally, I would have loved the option of a sunroof. Overall, I have no complaints at all!

Great job! However, the engine may be a bit small and lack power, especially when going uphill.

We love them so much that we bought two!

XB is my first new car. I'm so glad I chose it because it's stylish, fuel-efficient, and a blast to drive. It has all the features I need, including ABS, traction control, stability control, automatic locking, automatic windows, and air conditioning, all for a great price. My friends love driving it around town too! It's just such a fun car to drive!

Hi there! I recently picked up the xB as a second car. My main car is a 2002 BMW 325ci, but I drive 30K miles a year and have some big cargo requirements, too. So far, it has been great, with one, hopefully isolated, exception. There were a few occasions when the car power-stalled coming off the freeway, but the problem was checked out by the dealer (no problems found) and has not occurred since. I do have one more gripe though, the gas mileage is nowhere near their claimed levels. I've been averaging 28 mpg on mixed city/highway driving. Thanks for listening!
