The Acura CL is a midsize grand tourer manufactured by Honda's Acura brand from 1996 until 2003. The CL is often thought to have been a replacement for the Acura Legend coupe. It was not directly related to the first gen TL either, a Japanese-built model which replaced the Vigor and had a longitudinal engine layout. With the advent of the second generation TL in 1999, the transverse engined CL became more precisely a TL coupe. All Acura CLs were built at Honda's plant in East Liberty, Ohio, which is also the plant that builds the Honda Civic. The second generation TL and the Honda Accord upon which the Acura CLs were based, are built at Honda's plant in Marysville, Ohio, a few miles away from East Liberty. The CL was the first Acura to be built in the United States.

Following the end of the 1995 model year, the Acura Legend coupe disappeared from Acura's lineup when the sedan version was renamed the Acura RL. The CL was not a direct replacement for the Legend coupe as it no longer shared the same chassis as its sedan counterpart, and was not made in Japan, unlike the RL. Because Acura no longer had a suitable Legend coupe replacement, they created this vehicle. With the release of the TL and 3.5RL in 1996, Acura transitioned to alphanumeric and/or two-letter names, naming of all of its vehicles (with the exception of the Integra which kept its name until the 2001 model year). Although the CL was considered to be a satisfactory vehicle, it never gained traction or popularity like the other Acura coupes.

First generation (1996–1999)

For the 1997 model year, early models having been licensed as 1996 models, the CL was offered with either a 3.0 L J30 V6 producing 200 hp (149 kW), or a 145 hp (108 kW) 2.2 L (F22B1) I4 engine. The 1998 and 1999 models featured a 2.3 L 4-cylinder (F23A1) engine with 150 hp (112 kW).

Both the 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder CL offered a "Premium" trim level which offered leather upholstery (with heated front seats in the 3.0), and in the 3.0, an Acura/Bose stereo. For the 1999 model year, the "Premium" trim level was eliminated, and leather upholstery became standard on all models, as was a trunk cargo net. The alloy wheel design was different on the 3.0 for each year, moving from a five-spoke design (MY 1997) to a seven-spoke design (MY 1998), to a different multi-spoke alloy design for the 1999 model year. The 2.2/2.3 CL used a six-spoke design for 1997, then moved to a 5-spoke double-prong design for 1998 and 1999. The 4-cylinder model had an option for a 5-speed manual transmission. The CL also featured galvanized body panels which helps to prevent rust.

  • Summary: TRANSMISSION PROBLEM: ERRATIC SHIFTING, HARD DOWNSHIFTS, SHIFTS FROM 5TH GEAR INTO 2ND GEAR AT HIGH SPEED: CLOSE-TO-DEATH EXPERIENCE ON THE HIGHWAY!! THIS HAS HAPPENED 3 MONTHS AFTER THE RECALL SERVICE WAS DONE CONCLUDING NOTHING WRONG. FROM MY RESEARCH I HAVE FOUND THAT THE RECALL - "BAND-AID FIX" DOES NOT FIX WHATS ACTUALLY WRONG WITH THE TRANSMISSION BECAUSE IT IS A TRICK TO MAKE CONSUMERS THINK THAT THE CAR IS FINE. THE RECALL WAS PUT OUT BUT DOES NOT WORK!! THIS MATTER SHOULD BE LOOKED INTO PROPERLY AND THUROUGHLY AGAIN. I DO NOT WISH TO INJURE OR KILL MYSELF OR OTHERS BECAUSE MY CAR IS POORLY DESIGNED. MY CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY AND WILL NOT BE COVERED UNDER RECALL SINCE IT WAS ALREADY PROVIDED. FURTHERMORE, THE SYMPTOMS OF MY PROBLEM ARE DIFFERENT THAN THE RECALL SYMPTOMS. THE HONDA MOTOR CO. KNOWS VERY WELL THAT ALL THESE SYMPTOMS ARE COMBINED BUT DOES NOT WANT TO RECALL THE CORRECT PARTS BECAUSE IT WOULD COST TOO MUCH AND COVER TOO MANY VEHICLES. RIGHT NOW MY CHOICES ARE VERY LIMITED BUT EXPENSIVE: REPLACE WHOLE TRANSMISSION WITH FEW OTHER PARTS. MANY CONSUMERS' TRANSMISSIONS FAIL MULTIPLE TIMES SO THERE IS NO PERMANENT FIX AS THE COMPANY CLAIMS WITH THE RECALL SERVICE AND I'M SURE THIS IS NOT THE FIRST COMPLAIN. PLEASE LOOK INTO THE PROBLEM AGAIN AND MAKE THEM ISSUE A REAL SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM OR REFER ME SOMEWHERE THAT I COULD GET HELP RESOLVING THIS MATTER.

  • Summary: SINCE THE SECOND DAY OF HAVING MY CAR, MY CAR HAS BEEN CONTINUOUSLY PLAGUED WITH PROBLEMS. I HAVE TAKEN MY CAR IN FOR REPAIR OVER 10 TIMES FOR VARIOUS AND SOMETIMES REPEATING PROBLEMS. THIS ALL HAS OCCURRED WITHIN A THREE YEAR PERIOD. I HAVE NEVER HAD A VEHICLE THAT HAS HAD SO MANY PROBLEMS. SOME OF THE PROBLEMS HAVE BEEN SO SEVERE THAT I NO LONGER FEEL SAFE DRIVING MY CAR. ONE OF THESE PROBLEMS WAS MY TRANSMISSION SPONTANEOUSLY DOWNSHIFTING FROM 5TH GEAR TO 2ND GEAR AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THIS CAUSED A TREMENDOUS DECREASE OF SPEED. HAD SOMEONE BEEN IN BACK OF ME, I WOULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED. THE TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED, BUT IT CONTINUES TO ACT SPONTANEOUSLY. AFTER MAKING COMPLAINTS DIRECTLY TO ACURA OF AMERICA, I FEEL SNUBBED BY THEM IN THAT THEY HAVE NOT SOUGHT TO ASSIST ME OTHER THAN WARRANTY REPAIRS.

THE TRANSMISSION WAS SUBSEQUENTLY REPLACED. THE REPLACEMENT TRANSMISSION FAILED APPROXIMATELY 800 MILES LATER. I AM NOW ON MY THIRD, WHICH IS BEGINNING TO SHOW SIGNS OF INEVITABLE FAILURE. *AK

  • Manufacturer: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
  • Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2001-2002 Acura 3.2CL, 2000-2003 Acura 3.5RL, 2000-2001 Acura 3.2TL, Honda CR-V and Honda Odyssey, 2001-2002 Acura MDX and 2000 Accord Coupe, Accord Sedan, Civic Coupe, and Civic Sedan vehicles. These vehicles may have received a replacement driver frontal air bag module as part of a vehicle repair. Due to a manufacturing issue, the replacement NADI inflator may absorb moisture, causing the inflator to rupture or the air bag cushion to underinflate.
  • Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. An underinflated air bag cushion may not properly protect the occupant. These scenarios increase the risk of serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the air bags in the vehicles, replacing the driver frontal air bag inflator with an inflator of a different design, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began October 1, 2020. Owners may contact American Honda's Customer Support & Campaign Center at 1-888-234-2138.

  • Summary: ON SOME MINI VANS, SPORT UTILITY AND PASSENGER VEHICLES, CERTAIN OPERATING CONDITIONS CAN RESULT IN HEAT BUILD-UP BETWEEN THE COUNTERSHAFT AND SECONDARY SHAFT SECOND GEARS IN THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, EVENTUALLY LEADING TO GEAR TOOTH CHIPPING OR GEAR BREAKAGE.
  • Consequence: GEAR FAILURE COULD RESULT IN TRANSMISSION LOCKUP, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
  • Remedy: ON VEHICLES WITH 15,000 MILES OR LESS, THE DEALER WILL UPDATE THE TRANSMISSION WITH A SIMPLE REVISION TO THE OIL COOLER RETURN LINE TO INCREASE LUBRICATION TO THE SECOND GEAR. ON VEHICLES WITH MORE THAN 15,000 MILES, THE DEALER WILL INSPECT THE TRANSMISSION TO IDENTIFY GEARS THAT HAVE ALREADY EXPERIENCED DISCOLORATION DUE TO OVERHEATING. IF DISCOLORATION EXISTS, THE TRANSMISSION WILL BE REPLACED IF DISCOLORATION IS NOT PRESENT, THE DEALER WILL PERFORM THE REVISION TO THE OIL COOLER RETURN LINE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 21, 2004, FOR PILOT, ODYSSEY, AND MDX OWNERS. OWNERS OF THE ACCORD VEHICLES WILL START RECEIVING LETTERS ON JUNE 28, 2004, AND ON JUNE 29, 2004, FOR OWNERS OF THE TL AND CL VEHICLES. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT HONDA AT 1-800-999-1009 OR ACURA AT 1-800-382-2238.

    The Acura 3.2 CL S-type has had two transmission failures, both occurring at low mileage, with the recall only offering a replacement of the same faulty part. This is unacceptable for a new car, especially considering the price range. As a result of this experience, I have lost faith in Acura's reliability and quality, and will not be purchasing any of their products in the future.

    The driving experience is extremely uncomfortable. The steering wheel is difficult to turn and the seat backs obstruct the view when reversing. Additionally, adjusting the front seat to access the back seat is nearly impossible. Despite having purchased the vehicle only two weeks ago, I am thoroughly dissatisfied. It is regrettable that I traded my beloved 1988 Acura Legend Coupe for this unsatisfactory vehicle.

    For the money, this car is unbeatable! However, the paint quality is not up to par. My blue CL only looks good after it has been detailed. Unfortunately, the car is full of scratches, even though it has never been to a car wash. Despite this, I still love the car, but be aware of the paint.

    I had a 99 Acura and moved to this one. The power is great and it really stands out from other Acuras. I've had this car for 6 years now and it's about to hit 250,000 miles. The only major repairs I've had to make were to the power steering and alternator, but I have no plans on changing cars. I'm going to ride it until the wheels fall off!

    Great interior, enjoy the ride, and the gas mileage is fantastic - averaging 24 mpg even with my heavy foot. I've owned a range of cars in the past, including a 98 xj8, 97 prelude, 94 civic ex coupe, 84 crx, and 82 firebird, but Honda products are by far the best.
