2012 Hyundai Elantra touring problems
The Hyundai Elantra, also known as the Hyundai Avante (Korean: 현대 아반떼), is a compact car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 1990. The Elantra was initially marketed as the Lantra in Australia and some European markets. In Australia, this was due to the similarly named Mitsubishi Magna Elante model; similarly, in other markets, the name Avante is not used due to its similarity with Audi's "Avant" designation, which is used for their line-up of station wagons. The name was standardized as "Elantra" worldwide in 2001 (except in South Korea and Singapore).
First generation (J1; 1990)
The Elantra (codename J1) was launched in October 1990, and received a mid-term facelift in 1993.
It was sold in Europe from the spring of 1991. It replaced the somewhat larger on the outside Stellar, although that model had not been offered in many markets. The Elantra competed with the likes of the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra, but at a considerably lower price.
The Elantra was powered by a Mitsubishi-designed 1.6 L (1595 cc) straight-four. This DOHC 16-valve 1.6 L unit produced 113 PS (83 kW) at 6000 rpm and could push the Elantra to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.5 seconds. The quarter-mile (0.4 km) run took 17.1 seconds and produced 129 km/h (80 mph). Top speed was 187 km/h (116 mph). The Elantra got 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km) in the city cycle. Starting in 1993 a Mitsubishi-designed 1.8 L (1836 cc) inline-four option was available; this unit produces 135 PS (99 kW) at 6000 rpm and replaced the twin-cam 1.6 in the home market.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-12
- VIN: 5NPDH4AE1CH
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: A while ago the airbag light starting coming on intermittently and I originally thought it was the sensor detecting weight in the passenger seat or not and perhaps the sensor was a little off but did not investigate. Over time the light become on constantly but I didn't notice this shift until the horn stopped working recently too. After some troubleshooting of the fuse and relay, an independent shop determined that the clock spring is the issue. After researching online I discovered there is an extended warranty for the clock spring on my vehicle of which I was unaware. I do not recall receiving a letter about this [XXX] ), although the warranty extension was announced years before my vehicle showed signs of an issue. I also saw from other posts that the clock spring is a common issue possibly impacting the reliability of the airbags and horn and dealers have been hesitant to replace the clock spring until the issue reaches a certain degree of severity. Now I wonder if the airbags in my vehicle have not been ready to deploy in case of an accident since the seatbelt light started coming on and driving without a functioning horn adds more risk of an accident. I'm surprised that a recall was not previously issued as both the airbags and horn impact the safety of the vehicle. Apart from the concern of the part reliability itself, the lack of communication around the safety bulletin vs how recalls are communicated seems it could have put many at risk of malfunctioning airbags that would increase the severity of injury in an accident and a malfunctioning horn that would increase the chances of an accident. How is a faulty part that impacts functionality of the airbags and horn not a safety-related defect that merits a recall? - Summary: I was driving my 2012 Hyundai Elantra and it suddenly stopped. I took it to be checked out and it has an excessive oil consumption issue which can cause engine failure or a fire. Hyundai refuses to acknowledge the issue or fix it. After doing some research I see that this is a common problem with this car. I have to check my oil every 1000 miles and many times less than that and refill it. They should be held responsible and fix the issue. There should also have been a recall considering not only how dangerous this is, but also how many people are experiencing this.

- Summary: On January 8, 2024, we experienced total brake failure with the brake pedal going all the way to the floor. The lack of braking occurred suddenly with no prior issues or warning. The car was transported to a Hyundai dealership for diagnosis. The dealer service department reported they could not find any issues with the braking system. The brakes apparently worked once the vehicle arrived at the dealership. Due this issue suddenly occurring without warning and a braking system recall already in effect for this vehicle, we no longer felt safe driving the vehicle and purchased a new vehicle.

I bought this car because I needed to transport my two German Shepherds, and it has been a great fit for them with the back seats down. I personally prefer the stiffer ride of the SE trim over the GLS. The Chili Pepper Red color and upgraded wheels make it look very stylish. I have already driven 3000 miles and have been getting an average of 25 mpg in mixed driving, and up to 31 on a 500 mile trip to San Diego. The car is very well put together with no squeaks or rattles, and idles very smoothly. It's also a lot of fun to drive, especially when the dogs aren't in the back! I highly recommend the leather seating surfaces, as they are easy to keep clean, especially from dog hair!

Hey there! Just wanted to share some tips on how to keep your car running smoothly. During the winter, it's a good idea to stud your tires for better traction. Also, changing your oil every 2500 miles can really help with fuel efficiency. And if you're really dedicated to your car, you might even be able to reach 500k miles! Hope these tips help!

I never even considered shopping for an old Hyundai, but when I stumbled upon a nearby wagon with a stick shift, I decided to give it a chance. I must say, the quality of this car is higher than what you would expect from an Elantra Sedan, and the stick shift is quite smooth and easy to use. The ride is enjoyable on normal sweeping country roads, but it may struggle on mountains. It's truly a city car that offers ample space for a family and can handle highway driving, although it may struggle on freeways at speeds of 80 mph or higher for extended periods of time. Despite this, I have put a lot of highway miles on it, mainly due to adding sound deadening to the car and hood, which has reduced ambient noise by nearly 4 decibels! While some people complain that it doesn't look good, I personally think it has a classic hatchback look with a spacious trunk. Although the Mazda3 is a better car, this is definitely the better wagon.

Hyundai's best kept secret is its strong engine, roomy interior, and loads of features. I've been averaging 26 mpg, although I haven't taken any long trips yet. I've had the car for about a month now and it rides and handles like a sports car. The electric steering handles great. As someone who has driven Toyotas for over 20 years, I'm glad I made the switch to Hyundai.

Just so you know, if you buy one of these amazing little cars, you'll have enough room for kids, groceries, or luggage in the back. These cars are made to last and run forever, with a beautiful body style and great interior design. The gas mileage is the best, with 23 in town and 31 on the highway. It's made to travel, and I truly believe this is one of the best vehicles on the road today.

I love this car, but it has had a few issues. I bought it in April of 2013 from the dealer when it had 1,000 miles on it and it was loaded with features. Unfortunately, within the first few months of owning it, it burned through oil like crazy. It took a bit of time and effort, but the problem was eventually solved by two different dealers, and thankfully it was covered under warranty. While I did have some trouble with the instrument panel lights fading, making it difficult to navigate at night or in bright sunlight, this issue was also resolved by a few different dealers. I'm grateful that the odometer was able to be sent somewhere in Michigan so that the mileage would remain intact. Recently, the check engine light came on and it turns out I need a new transmission, but thankfully this is also covered under warranty. While I was hoping to get at least 100,000 miles out of this car, I'm still happy with my purchase and will continue to drive it. On a side note, the tires that come on Hyundai cars are not ideal for serious winter weather, but I was able to swap them out for Nokian SW4s, which have been great. I do wish the rear seats folded flat, but that's something I'll keep in mind for next time. Overall, I'm happy with my Elantra and would recommend it to others.

The first gear of my manual car has been having issues since day one, often failing to engage. Despite my experience driving manual cars without issue, the dealer has refused to fix the problem and instead blamed me. As a confident driver, I know that the issue lies with the car and I am disappointed to be stuck with a brand new car that does not function properly.

I bought my Hyundai Elantra Touring brand new in April 2011 and I'm currently looking for a new car in September 2017. Although it has only done 60,000 miles, it has had some issues with the sway bar and sway bar links, which we've had to replace at least once a year. Additionally, it seems to be developing some transmission issues, which makes it jerky when switching between 2nd and 3rd gear. Despite these issues, I like the size of the car and it has a pretty decent gas mileage of around 30 mpg. However, we've had to spend a lot of money on repairs, which has been frustrating. My in-laws also bought the same car a few months after us and had similar issues, which is disappointing. I'm looking forward to getting a new car soon. Although my experience with this car has left me with a poor impression of Hyundai, I'll be going back to Hondas from now on.

I have found the seats in my Hyundai to be the least comfortable of any car I have owned. This negative experience has led me to decide against purchasing another Hyundai in the future. The discomfort has even caused issues with my back and hip.
