The Toyota Highlander, also known as the Toyota Kluger (Japanese: トヨタ・クルーガー, Hepburn: Toyota Kurūgā), is a mid-size crossover SUV with three-row seating produced by Toyota since 2000.

Announced in April 2000 at the New York International Auto Show and arriving in late 2000 in Japan and January 2001 in North America, the Highlander became one of the first car-based mid-size SUV or mid-size crossovers. The Highlander is the crossover counterpart to the more rugged, truck-based mid-size 4Runner and became Toyota's best-selling SUV before being surpassed by the smaller RAV4 in 2006.

The first-generation model was sold in Japan as the Kluger, which was exclusive to dealership network called Toyota Netz as a larger alternative to the RAV4. The Kluger nameplate is also used in Australia because "Highlander" is a trademarked trim line name owned by Hyundai. The name is derived from the German word klug, which means smart or clever (Klüger – with diacritics – means "someone who is smarter than another" in German).

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-20
  • VIN: 5TDJZRFH3JS
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: While driving the car at approximately 40 mphs the car suddenly jolted and stopped moving. Luckily no one was behind and I pulled over also noticing check engine light came on. I immediately called Toyota and was able to drive it to them. I spent $140 diagnosis fees for them to say it was ignition coil B. After replacing the coil the light and same problems continued. We took the car to another mechanic, spent $600 diagnosis fees to find out it is the ECM. We then contacted the Toyota dealer asking about previous recalls that were on the ECM for 2018 Toyota Highlanders which is our car. They stated our car based off the VIN has no recalls. How could this recall be for 2018 Toyota Highlanders but not for our 2018 Toyota Highlander with the same issues? Our car only has 80,000 miles.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-27
  • VIN: 5TDJZRFH9JS
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: The 2018 Toyota Highlander has less than 100K miles on it and has been diagnosed with an $11K repair for essentially a new engine! The dealership (Coughlin Toyota, Heath OH) has said it needs cylinder head assembly for $10,684.20. The error message we are getting is a "Check Engine" light "Take Vehicle to Dealership" and the AWD/ Traction Control shuts off. When searching online forums, there are MANY people experiencing the same problem, apparently a well know issue with Toyota (not just Highlanders). We have only owned this vehicle for a few years and believe this is a manufacturer error that desperately needs investigated. Please.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-02
  • VIN: 5TDJZRFH4JS
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Out of nowhere, I couldn’t get the car to start. It keeps saying “Low Braking Power”. I had someone checked with Code Scanner and nothing shows up, and it’s not battery issue neither. The car guy said there’s a very high chance the issue is from the brake booster vacuum pump.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-19
  • VIN: 5TDJZRFH5JS
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Brake Booster did not work. We were almost in 2 wrecks due to it taking longer to stop the vehicle. The dealer finally fixed it after I paid over $1500. They didn't care about how this was a known defect in 2018 Toyota Highlanders and took forever to identify and fix. No one has looked at it since just got it back today. Once the brake light went on the dash board I brought it in. I did wait one day when it went off, but once it came back on again I was going to, but then was scared when it didn't come on and then I could barely stop.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-23
  • VIN: 5TDJZRFH1JS
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The 2018 engine (3.5L DOHC V6 D-4S Engine with Dual VVT-i Direct Shift) with 52,500 miles has by now (2024) developed a large oil leak coming from the valve cover to cam tower seal, and requires replacement of valve cover assembly and gasket priced at $2173.51 by a local Toyota dealer. I'm the original owner with the car always being garaged and maintained by the book at the dealer. Toyota of America is refusing any assistance with the defective engine component even though it is under the 60,000 miles powertrain warranty, but past the 60 months warranty period. The leak likely developed prior to the first 60 months of use, but was just now noticeable to the technician. Leaking engine oil on hot components of the engine bay may result in smoke, burning odor, and even fires.

  • VIN: 5TDJGRFH9JS
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-09
  • VIN: 5TDBZRFH5JS
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: My 2018 Highlander Transmission (8 speed model UA80) began a whine noise characteristic of Customer Support Bulletin POL19-04 when the vehicle hit 101k miles. Toyota performed an inspection on 8/9/2024 and recommends full transmission + transfer case replacement. The dealer confirmed also confirmed the issue is characteristic of POL19-04, but because the vehicle was manufactured 6-months after vehicles bracketed in POL19-04 (based on the transmission serial number) it is not included in the support program therefore not covered. Toyota UA80 transmissions have continued to have this issue (example - T-SB-0008-21 for '21 UA80 transmission). While Toyota acknowledges replacement of transmission is necessary to maintain a safe drivetrain, no customer-facing error messages are evident. Also note - transmission fluid has been maintained only using Toyota's recommended Fluid (Toyota branded WS ATF) at Toyota's specified intervals.

SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-25
  • VIN: 5TDJZRFH2JS
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: As I was returning to my house and about to pull into our garage I was driving very slowly, riding the brake in fact. I was going less than 1 mph but as I first entered the garage my car engine suddenly roared very loudly and sped inside. I pressed as hard as I could on the brakes and the car skidded towards the left and slammed into the garage wall. I firmly believe that the only thing that kept my car from traveling farther was the garage door frame. Between my braking and then turning off the engine, I came to a stop. There were skid marks on the pavement at the garage entrance from the hard braking and both the driver's door and the passenger door on that side were severely damaged. The car was now angled to the left and not pointed straight into the garage as it should have been. At no time did I press on the accelerator.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-27
  • VIN: 5TDJZRFH2JS
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,LANE DEPARTURE
  • Summary: On a trip to NC on June 27 2024, then on to Hilton Head SC on 6/29, multiple system warning lights suddenly appeared on the dash including ABS, Lane Departure Warning, BSM, notifying me that those safety features were not available on the vehicle. Sometimes the the lights would disappear, especially if the vehicle was stopped and the engine was turned off at a rest area. Because the check engine light was not lit, I continued to our NC destination. We continued our trip on 6/29 to Hilton Head, and the lights continued to appear, sometimes staying on for an hour or more. I called my Binghamton NY Toyota dealer who advised me to have the problem looked. I was able to have the car seen at Savannah Toyota (GA) where they diagnosed the problem as an issue with rust and debris on the left front speed sensor. I had the recommended service performed. The service report says that I requested replacing the ABS sensor, which is totally false, because I had no idea what the problem was, I just wanted it fixed. The part was ordered and replaced the next morning. All the lights were back on the next day when I drove back from Savannah to Hilton Head. I did not have time to go back to the dealer, but did notify the service manager of the situation. I drove the vehicle back to NY with the warning lights on (most of the time). I now have a service appt with my local dealer on 7/9/24 to determine the next step.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-01
  • VIN: 5TDZARFH7JS
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: My vehicle is stalling when driving and other Toyota Highlanders of same model and year were/are having the same issue and have been recalled for the fuel pump. Having my vehicle stall when driving in the busy highways of Texas are very dangerous especially when some speed limits go up to 80mph. The problem has been reproduced and witnessed by a mechanic. The Toyota dealership stated that my VIN is not included in the recall so they could not fix it. There was no warning before the first time my vehicle stalled while driving in the highway. Unsure of how dealerships only stick to just the specific VINs that are effected when other VINs of the same model and year are having the same issue but are not willing to fix the issue.

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-10
  • VIN: 5TDJGRFH3JS
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: Driver side seat belt is difficult to pull out and often does not retract properly. This is a safety issue for the driver. Issue has been seen by local Toyota dealer who can confirm the problem. Stated that it will require a $500 repair, replacing the entire retractable unit of the driver side seatbelt system.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-03
  • VIN: 5TDJZRFH3JS
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Whining noise from transmission on 2018 Toyota Highlander XLE model . Toyota has acknowledged this on large numbers of vehicles manufactured during the same year (TSB-0160-18). They have a voluntary recall for some of these vehicles during this year (2018), but not all of them. The transmission can fail which would cause the vehicle to stop running. On a highway or busy road, this presents a very large danger to both the vehicle occupants and also other people on the road. The vehicle has been inspected by both the dealership an an independent transmission shop and identified as the same transmission issue. Toyota will not correct this issue other than to say the transmission needs to be replaced as it will fail at some point in time. No other warning indicators other than the whining sound from the transmission. The symptoms appeared around 48700 miles on the vehicle.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-30
  • VIN: 5TDDZRFH5JS
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Transaxle/Transmission failed at approx 67000 Miles. Emits a whining sound, very similar to symptoms as other transaxle/transmissions from model yr 2017 covered by the manufacturer for replacement of transaxle/transmission. This vehicle, model year 2018, is not covered by the existing transaxle/transmission replacement program, as explained by the dealership. Yet reviewing many forums, it is said that many of the later 2017/2018 Highlanders received the same transaxle/transmissions as the model year 2017 covered for replacement by the manufacturer, hence they exhibit the same symptoms when they fail. Estimated cost to replace the transaxle/transmission by the dealership $ 8000.00. The manufacturer needs to step up.

  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: Transmission is bad. Toyota dealership says it needs to be replaced. Really? In a 2018 Toyota. I thought these were good cars. Supposed to last a long time. That’s why I paid over $30,000 for it. And this is what I get. There is something wrong with this scenario. I could have bought a much cheaper car and it would still be functioning fine.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-21
  • VIN: 5TDDZRFH2JS
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: My transmission started making a whine sound upon acceleration, and at times hesitation of acceleration (inconsistent). Toyota Service identified the issue in 2018 as a defective part from manufacturing and related in the repair notice to Toyota Service Bulletin TSB-160-18 which states certain Highlanders (my year and model) have an issue with a defective part in the transaxle/transmission. Toyota issued an extended warranty for the problem in 2020 (unlimited miles for coverage). I was then told that it then DIDN'T apply to my VIN, even tho it was the problem diagnosed by a Toyota service technician associated with the TSB above, so they wouldn't cover thru the extended warranty. Told me that I have to pay for a new transmission over $9,000. My understanding (I cannot verify) that the initial service bulletin was expanded to cover more models in 2021, then removed the extended warranty, and did not issue a recall. Apparently Toyota is aware of a serious transmission problem caused by a defective part, and it is wider issue. This needs to be addressed as it is a significant hazard and danger Toyota is aware of, and not the cause of normal and expected wear and tear. I need help addressing this with TOyota and want to be sure the problem gets fixed before injuries occur. Toyota has multiple bulletins in the NHTSA data for this issue from before and after this issued bulletin demonstrating on ongoing issue. I tried to upload the TSB and the repair documentation but your system is not allowing

Negative 2018 Toyota Highlander car reviews

I recently leased a 2018 Toyota Highlander, but unfortunately, I have not been enjoying the driving experience as much as I had hoped. Despite upgrading from a 2010 Nissan Rogue with 130,000 miles, I found that my old 4-cylinder Nissan was actually more comfortable than my brand new 6-cylinder Highlander. After only 5000 miles, I noticed that my steering wheel was vibrating and the car didn't feel right. It turns out that I had a defective tire, which the dealership eventually replaced, but the vibration and rough ride issues persisted. I even purchased new Michelin tires myself, but the car still feels awful. I have brought the car to the dealership multiple times, but they have only balanced the tires and claimed that everything feels normal. I have also noticed excessive wind noise, especially on the highway, which can be quite distracting. Additionally, the transmission can be unpredictable and has harsh shifts, which is not what I expected from a brand new car. Overall, I am disappointed with my experience and hope that the dealership can address these issues soon.

I had a 2018 Toyota Highlander XLE AWD. Although I loved the car, its features, and how it drove, the driver's seat caused me a lot of discomfort. I experienced left hip, back, and neck pain, which I initially thought was just me until I drove someone else's car and had no pain. The seat was uncomfortable even on short rides, but it was unbearable on long rides. It was a sad day for me to have to turn in the Highlander for a new car because I have been a loyal Toyota owner for over 35 years. The leather seat was very firm, and it felt like sitting on hard plastic. Other than the pain caused by the driver's seat, the car worked great for my needs. I hope Toyota can fix the seat issue so that I can return to being a satisfied Toyota owner.

Since the first day I got this car, I have been experiencing some issues with the transmission. Whenever I coast into an intersection or a rotary and step on the gas, it hesitates before accelerating quickly. Despite bringing it to the dealership several times, I was told that this is normal. I even test drove another 2018 Highlander on the lot with the salesman, and while there was some minor hesitation, it was still better than mine. During my recent service visit, I expressed my dissatisfaction with the car to the service person. He mentioned that he has been receiving a lot of complaints about the transmission. Although I am disappointed with my experience, I appreciate the service person's help. I am considering exploring other options for my next car purchase. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I spent 44k on a platinum fully loaded Highlander, which is a great car. However, after 2 weeks, the rubber around the sunroof came loose and made terrible road noise. I took it back to the dealer, who acknowledged it was a factory defect and fixed it. Unfortunately, the same issue occurred a month later, but the dealer replaced the rubber. Despite this, the problem persisted 3 months later, so I contacted Toyota. They had me take it back to the dealer, where they spent 2 days fixing the problem. Although the sunroof has come loose again while driving 75 on the freeway, Toyota has been responsive and is working to resolve the issue. While I have not achieved the advertised MPG, I still find the Highlander to be a reliable and enjoyable car.

My wife and I purchased our 2018 Toyota Highlander in mid-May of this year. Unfortunately, we experienced some issues with the AC blower and radio/navigation system shortly after. Despite providing videos and pictures to the dealership, the issues persisted and we had to bring the car back to the service center multiple times. We even contacted the Toyota Corporation to file a complaint on the safety concerns. However, we faced some challenges with the corporate office who tried to push blame on us for the issues. Despite this, we remain hopeful that Toyota will take responsibility and fix our car. We believe that our Highlander is a great car and we look forward to enjoying it for years to come.I would like to suggest that you consider other options besides Toyota and their products. While we are working towards a resolution through arbitration, it is important for you to prioritize your safety and avoid this vehicle and company. It is concerning that they do not seem to prioritize their customers' safety and are unwilling to admit their mistakes.

Positive 2018 Toyota Highlander car reviews

  1. Fletcher Erdman 2024-11-23

Hey there! I noticed that there's quite a bit of plastic in the interior and some of the additional options are a bit pricey. While the car is definitely solid, I don't think it stands out too much in terms of features or pricing. One thing that I find a bit inconvenient is that folding down the second and third row seats requires a 4 step process. I'm personally looking for something a bit simpler. By the way, have you heard about the new 2019 Subaru Ascent SUV model? It's coming out in the next month or two and I'm definitely interested in checking it out!

  2. Ignatius Sipes 2024-11-06

If I could go back in time, I would not have bought this 2018 model. My wife did not want a used car, certified or not, so we decided on the Highlander LE with the V6. The interior and exterior are very appealing and well laid out. We test drove the new Subaru Ascent, Honda Pilot, and Dodge Durango GT. Personally, I liked the Durango GT as it is a nicer car for the price. The third-row seat is very usable for adults too. However, my wife nixed it because it was too big and bulky. The Subaru's turbo engine was impressive, but the body style was just terrible. The Pilot's body was like a big bubble. Although the Highlander's motor is rated at 295 HP, it feels like 200. It really is like driving a 4 banger. The transmission is always in between gears, seems too high or too low. You really have to get into the gas pedal to get moving. I figured after break-in, everything would be better, but it wasn't. The service shop says everyone is complaining about it, and a recall is likely coming. Anyway, we had rented a 2016 Highlander a couple of years ago for a long road trip, and it was a fantastic car. It had power, a good transmission, and a nicer interior. I think the Highlander has gone downhill a bit. This may be the shortest ownership of a vehicle we've ever had. Driving something every day that you just don't like takes a toll.

Since my kids have grown-up, I needed to replace my reliable and comfortable Honda Odyssey with a more fun and family-friendly SUV. Money wasn't a big concern, so I was shopping between a 2017 Audi Q7, 2016 MB GL, 2016 Lexus GX, new Honda Pilot and new Toyota Highlander - all of them 7/8 seaters. After test driving all the cars, I have to say that the brand-new 2018 Highlander AWD Limited was the clear winner for me. It has great features, comfort, and nice styling. I had the dealer put running-boards and door moldings, and it looks gorgeous! The interior is lovely, and the shelf is so useful. I have put 300 miles on it so far, and it is very comfortable. The 3rd row access is fine, and the seating is comfortable. I am planning to keep the car for at least 5-6 years, and I would highly recommend it to anyone!

  4. Leopold Gorczany 2024-09-19

I absolutely loved my first Toyota, a 2012 Highlander, from the moment I test-drove it. When my daughter left for college in late 2017, we decided to give it to her and purchased a new 2018 model (one down from the Platinum). Although we preferred the interior design of the 2012, the 2018 is still beautiful inside and very comfortable. It has been a great smooth ride overall, which is especially important for my son who gets car sick often. The car has lots of great safety features, such as blind spot notification and lane crossover awareness, but it does have several blind spots, especially if you are petite. The biggest downfalls (in my opinion) of this model are: 1) The transmission - it is definitely not as good of quality as in earlier models and it is noticeable. The transmission is unpredictable at lower speeds... it seems bogged down, it hesitates, stalls, etc... It feels as though you've shifted up at too low of a speed in a manual transmission vehicle. It has weak off-take and takes a minute to gain speed. This can be frustrating and could be dangerous. However, overall, it is still a great car. 2) The automatic stop/start feature can be a bit annoying, especially when driving in a small town with little traffic. It doesn't seem like it is good for the vehicle to constantly turn off the engine either. It would be better if this feature was optional and could be turned on or off as needed. 3) The entertainment panel is placed too far away from the driver, unlike earlier models prior to 2014. It would be better if it was curved towards the driver or placed closer to the driver's seat. As someone who is 5'1I dropped off my 2018 Highlander with the service department this morning due to some transmission issues. Although I was informed that there are no outstanding service bulletins or notes about transmission issues, I have come across forums and reviews that suggest otherwise. I am hoping to hear more about the issue when I pick up my car later today. I loved my 2012 Highlander so much, but I am not in love with the 2018 model. I am experiencing some buyer's remorse about this one, and it may very well be my last Highlander, which is sad to say, especially since it only has 9,500 miles on it.

  5. Jayde Murphy 2024-07-25

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share some feedback on my experience with the vehicle. I noticed that the headlight switch is a bit too sensitive and can be accidentally turned off, which can be a bit inconvenient. Additionally, I found that the heater/cooler blower motor for the front seats can be quite noisy when the seat cooler/heater is on. Lastly, I personally prefer a spin-on oil filter, as opposed to the cartridge type oil filter that is currently used. However, I must say that overall, I have had a great experience with the vehicle and have not encountered any issues in the 30K miles that I have driven it. Thank you for your attention to this matter!
