2004 Infiniti M45 problems
The Infiniti M is a line of mid-size luxury (executive) cars from the Infiniti luxury division of Nissan. From 2013 (model year 2014) on it has been marketed as the Infiniti Q70, reflecting the company's new naming scheme.
The first iteration was the M30 Coupé/Convertible, which were rebadged JDM Nissan Leopard. After a long hiatus, the M nameplate was used for Infiniti's mid-luxury sedans (executive cars). First was the short-lived M45 sedan, a rebadged version of the Japanese-spec Nissan Gloria. The next generations, the M35/45 and M37/56/35h/30d, became the flagship of the Infiniti brand and are based on the JDM Nissan Fuga.
First generation (1989–1992)
The Infiniti M30 was a 2-door coupé based on the Japanese market Nissan Leopard (chassis code F31). It was launched in 1989 for the 1990 model year as a luxury coupe alternative to the Infiniti Q45, and was intended to be an alternative to the Lexus SC and Acura Legend coupe for the North American market.
Unlike its competitors that were designed with the American market in mind and were launched as brand-new models, the M30 was based on a somewhat dated platform that was originally designed for the Japanese market; when the Leopard was imported to the United States, few changes were made to the exterior but the interior was revised to better suit American tastes; a leather interior was standard in the M30, and several features in the Leopard such as a center-mounted television screen and a digital instrument cluster weren't available in the M30 as those features were perceived as gimmicks in western car markets.
The M30's angular design aesthetics and on-road performance were viewed as outdated, especially considering a redesigned Acura Legend coupe was launched in 1991. The interior came in for criticism for its outdated ergonomics and lack of room. While the Japanese-market Leopard had received a new dashboard along with the 1988 facelift, economics precluded making a left-hand-drive version of the new dashboard and the M30 was instead fitted with the LHD version of the R31 Skyline's rectilinear dashboard, first presented in 1985.
The M30 made up for these deficiencies in its somewhat lower price; whereas the 1990 Acura Legend coupe started at $27,325 before options and the 1990 BMW 325i started at $24,650 before options, the M30 started at $23,500, and had no factory options, per Infiniti's pricing structure used at the time. Dealerships offered an in-car cellular telephone and in-dash CD player as optional accessories, amongst other items.

I WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT TO THE ADVANCE AUTO NEAR MY HOME WHERE THEY PUT IT ON THE MACHINE TO SEE IF THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE ALTERNATOR AND/OR BATTERY. ALTERNATOR WAS GOOD AND THE BATTERY HAD SOME DEAD CELLS BUT I WAS TOLD NOT ENOUGH FOR THE CAR TO JUST DIE OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF DRIVING. THE NEXT DAY I INSTALLED A NEW BATTERY, THE CAR STARTED, DROVE ONTO THE INTERSTATE AND IT STALLED AGAIN (MY DAUGHTER WAS IN THE CAR) I HAD TO DRIFT TO SERVICE ROAD. I HAD TO LEAVE THE CAR OVERNIGHT, WENT BACK THIS MORNING (WEDNESDAY)AND THE CAR STARTED, I DROVE DIRECTLY TO THE INFINITI DEALER AND WAS DIAG.W/A BAD CRANK POSITION SENSOR. I HAD IT REPAIRED. I RESEARCHED THIS PROBLEM THE FIRST DAY IT HAPPENED AND FOUND THAT A RECALL WAS IN PLACE FOR OVER 620K M45'S;HOWEVER MINE WAS NOT ONE OF THEM. SAME PART, SAME DIAG, SAME MODEL, DIFFERENT YEAR. I CONTACTED A LOCAL INFINITI DEALER AND ASKED ABOUT THE PROBLEM AND WAS TOLD "IT'S ONLY HAPPENED A FEW TIMES" BUT I HAD PAGES OF OTHER OWNERS POSTING ON THE FORUMS SAYING IT HAD HAPPENED TO THEM. THE DEALER TOLD ME IT WOULD BE $800 TO REPLACE THE GAUGE CLUSTER, SO I SAID "NO THANKS" AND HAD MY ORIGINAL CLUSTER REPAIRED WITH A LIFETIME WARRANTY AT BBA REMANUFACTURING AND IT HAS WORKED PERFECTLY SINCE SEPTEMBER 2010. THEY INITIALLY THOUGHT IT WAS MY FLOAT MECHANISM IN THE GAS TANK BUT FINALLY REALIZED IT WAS THE DASH AND REPLACED IT UNDER WARRANTY ($50 DEDUCTIBLE APPLIED). MY WARRANTY EXPIRED A FEW MILES AGO (CAR HAS 90500 MILES ON IT NOW) AND I HAVE BEGUN TO NOTICE THE PROBLEM AGAIN. CURRENTLY I FILL UP AFTER THE TRIP ODOMETER REACHES 300 MILES DRIVEN ON A TANK BECAUSE WHILE THE GAUGE APPEARS TO WORK ACCURATELY, ONCE IT REACHES 1/4 OF TANK LEFT, IT BEGINS TO RISE AND WILL GO AS HIGH AS 3/4 FULL. SOMETIMES TURNING THE CAR OFF AND THEN BACK ON WILL RESET IT BUT IT WILL SOON BEGIN TO RISE AGAIN. VERY ANNOYING AND ACCORDING TO THE DEALER THE DASH COSTS $900+ (IN 2009). CHECKED THE COMPUTER AND IT SHOWED 0 MILES TILL EMPTY. LUCKILY MY WIFE WAS ABLE TO BRING ME THE GAS FOR THE LAWNMOWER. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES SINCE THIS INITIAL INCIDENT. A COUPLE TIMES WITH JUST MY WIFE AND CHILDREN IN THE CAR. FORTUNATELY MY WIFE'S COMMUTE INVOLVES STREETS AND AVENUES AND NO FREEWAYS OR HIGHWAYS. I'VE COMMUNICATED MY ISSUES ON FORUMS AND BLOGS, TURNS OUT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM, AND SO FAR NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE BY INFINITI TO ADDRESS THIS. THE FIX COMES AT A RIDICULOUS PRICE, DEALER WANTS TO CHANGE OUT GAUGE CLUSTER, UPWARDS OF $1,000. - Summary: THIS CAR DIED ON ME ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN THE FUEL GAUGE SAID THAT I HAD A 3/4 TANK OF GAS REMAINING. THE CAR STARTED SPUTTERING LIKE IT HAD RUN OUT OF GAS SO WE ADDED GAS AND IT STARTED RIGHT UP. I DROVE IT TO A LOCAL INFINITI DEALERSHIP RIGHT AWAY. THEY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS IN INSTRUMENT CLUSTER, WHICH SHOCKED ME AS I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF AN INSTRUMENT CLUSTER BEING RESPONSIBLE FOR A CAR RUNNING OUT OF GAS. I SEARCHED SOME ONLINE FORUMS ONLY TO DISCOVER THAT THERE WERE HUNDREDS OF OTHER PEOPLE WHO HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. HAD THE FUEL SENDING UNIT OR FURL PUMP WENT OUT, THAT WOULD BE UNDERSTANDABLE, BUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER GOING BAD COULD HAVE BEEN VERY DANGEROUS. SINCE THE CLUSTER CONTROLS MILEAGE AND ALL THE WARNING LIGHTS SUCH AS CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS, THIS WAS VERY SCARY. IT SEEMS THAT INFINITI KNOWS THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THESE AS MANY OF THE PEOPLE ON THE FORUMS SAID INFINITI HAD PAID FOR A NEW INSTRUMENT CLUSTER. WITH THIS PROBLEM BEING SO PREVALENT, I THINK IT IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR THE NHTSA TO LOOK INTO. I BELIEVE IT SHOULD BE A RECALL WITH THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE HAVING PROBLEMS. The car handles very well and has plenty of power. The navigation system performs well. The intelligent cruise control works amazingly well, even in traffic. However, in Southern California, it maintains a safe separation distance, which means other drivers frequently cut in front.

For $40k, this is the best V-8 deal available. It's incredibly fast, yet surprisingly quiet. The dealer is great, and the warranty is better than average. Plus, there are plenty of interior features to enjoy.

I've been driving the Infiniti M45 since September 2004. It's got plenty of power with smooth acceleration and a great braking system. The interior design is very well done, with almost all of the fancy features you can think of.

I haven't loved a car this much since my '88 Mustang Conv. GT. The 2004 M45 is fast, comfortable, and hot with all the jazz. I stopped talking to the car after two weeks (voice activated stuff is cool but useless once you know what to push). In a car with this much electronics and intelligence, the analog clock is a wonderful touch. The interior is gorgeous.

I see you've moved from an I35 to an M45! That's quite an upgrade! It sounds like you're enjoying the car's horsepower and acceleration, especially after 55 miles an hour. I'm glad to hear that you're happy with the handling, but it's a shame that the back seat doesn't have more leg room. I agree that it would be helpful if the cruise and radio controls lit up at night, and it would be convenient if the doors locked and unlocked automatically when moving from park. It seems like the price of the car should include more standard features, but overall it sounds like you're enjoying your new ride!
