The Kia K5, formerly known as the Kia Optima (Korean: 기아 옵티마), is a mid-size car manufactured by Kia since 2000 and marketed globally through various nameplates. First generation cars were mostly marketed as the Optima, although the Kia Magentis name was used in Europe and Canada when sales began there in 2002. For the second-generation models, Kia used the Kia Lotze and Kia K5 name for the South Korean market, and the Magentis name globally, except in the United States, Canada, Malaysia and the Middle East, where the Optima name was retained until the 2021 model year. The K5 name is used for all markets since the introduction of the fifth generation in 2019.
First generation (MS; 2000)
From 2000–2005, Optimas were a rebadged variant of the Hyundai Sonata, differing from the Sonata only in minor exterior styling details and equipment content. It was first shown in South Korea in July 2000 and was the first product of the Kia-Hyundai platform integration plan.
In Australia, the Optima was introduced in May 2001, offered only with a 2.5 L V6 engine, and choice of manual or automatic transmission. The updated Optima was offered with a new 2.7 L engine, 4-speed automatic (the manual was dropped), and features such as full leather interior and alloy wheels were made standard. Thanks in part to better marketing, sales increased to 41,289 units in 2005, an all-time high. The Optima was sold until 2006, when it was replaced by the Magentis.

The engine was smoking. And a warning message came across the entertainment screen that said, “A possible condition with your engine control system has been detected, recommend service soon” I never received any notification of any oil pressure loss, oil loss, warning lights, nothing. My car has been at the dealership for over 60 days, and KIA is refusing to cover the engine under warranty, blaming an oil change place that did an oil change over a month prior to this incident, and I drive 100 to 200 miles per day for work, so this would have occurred sooner. - Summary: While driving in a utility work area on 5/3/24, there was a worker placing cones to redirect traffic. Since he was very close to the travel lane, I proceeded very slowly While placing a cone, the worker got to within a few inches of the passenger side of my vehicle. This set off a warning in my car that something (or someone) was very close. After exiting the work area, I tried to accelerate, but I was unable to. I estimate the car was going no more than 5 mph. Fortunately, there was no car behind me or coming toward me, and I was able to turn left into a shopping center parking lot. It was then that I noticed a warning on the touch screen display that read: "Engine Management System - Details". When I went to look at details, it gave me some warnings but I don't recall what they were. Unfortunately, I did not get a screenshot of the messages. I tried turning off the engine several times, but there was no change. I called the dealer where I purchased the car in December 2023, but he was unable to provide any help without physically looking at the car. Since the dealer was about 40 miles away, that wasn't an option. He did however, provide me with a number to call for emergency roadside assistance from KIA. After about ten minutes, the car restarted without any issues. If this would have occurred while driving at higher speeds, it would have been extremely dangerous, most liking causing an accident.

- Summary: After driving the car for approximately 30 minutes at freeway speeds I exited the freeway at my off-ramp and being driving on Surface streets. Suddenly several alerts started appearing on the screen of my car. That was followed by the engine revving up and down on its own without me touching the accelerator. When I arrived at a stoplight the engine was idling but revving slightly up and down. When the light changed I pressed accelerator and the engine never exceeded idle speed so I basically idled my way across the intersection and pulled over and stopped. The car is at the dealership now and they haven't duplicated the problem. I purchased the car brand new about one month ago. It has only 800 miles on the odometer. If this had happened a few minutes earlier I would have been on the freeway with no power to the drive train. This could have put me in a very dangerous position.

- Summary: I purchased a brand new 2024 kia k5 gt on September 2 2023; from kia of Cerritos "18201 Studebaker Rd, Cerritos, CA 90703" . My car has noticeable defects that affect the driving experience and can be dangerous. When coming to a stop the engine turns off as if it was deactivating one or more of my cylinders. While that happens it stalls the car. My adaptive cruise control doesn't work as intended since it came damaged from the manufacturer, while driving with the adaptive cruise control on the vehicle requires more input to maneuver. The vehicle did a sudden jerked and almost ran me into a freeway barricade. I also noticed some of my trim pieces and my steering wheel aren't properly put on and are falling off and the body trim is under recall. The dealer handlingthe recall is kia of downtown los angeles "1945 S Figueroa St, Los Angeles, CA 90007". I was able to fix the trim pieces by another dealer. I let the dealer I purchased the vehicle from know of the experiences I had with the vehicle and nothing was done.

We recently purchased our 2023 K5 GT Line in Sapphire Blue and we're still learning about all of its bells and whistles. This car is incredibly smooth and we haven't noticed any road noise at all. While we plan to do a few upgrades in the future, we couldn't be happier with our purchase right now. The heated seats are definitely a plus, although we do wish it had rear wipers - but that's just a small inconvenience. Overall, we highly recommend this car and are confident that you won't be disappointed!

The fitment of the door, hood, and trunk is poor, making it difficult to close. Unfortunately, the headlight fitment to the fender is also lacking on the passenger side. Additionally, the rear internal fender shield is not designed to withstand snow and ice build-up. However, the GT1 has impressive power and the self-driving technology is good, although it's important not to rely on it when entering on-ramps. While Kia has cut some features from the 2015 Optima SXL, it's still a great car. I personally prefer the basics and am not a fan of using apps to drive a car. After adjusting the headlamp assembly to fit the fender and hood, I'm satisfied with the car's appearance. The trunk area is surprisingly spacious and doesn't interfere with the speakers. The lane assist and dynamic cruise control work well, and the interior and seat comfort are of high quality. However, I do have two concerns. Firstly, it's puzzling that the main headlights must be on for the fog lights to work, which defeats the purpose in foggy conditions. Secondly, the map destination cannot be set while in drive mode, which I understand is a safety feature for the driver, but it should be allowed if a passenger is detected. Overall, I have a more positive view of the car.

The factory paint had some issues, but I was able to get it fixed under warranty. However, the body shop they sent me to was not up to par and made the paint worse. Additionally, the door panel started coming apart and the seats were cheap and easily scratched. The headliner also began to come down whenever I opened and closed the sunroof.

I recently purchased a brand new 2024 Kia K5 GT the day after Christmas. Unfortunately, in less than a month and a half with only 880 miles, all the lights went on and there was no power. I wasn't sure what had happened, so I turned the car off and then back on. The power was back, but the check engine light stayed on. I took it to the dealership and they advised me to make an appointment. I did, but in the days following, the car reset and the light went off. It happened again about 2 weeks later, and again before I could go in, the check engine light went off. The dealer advised me to bring it in as soon as the light comes on again. I have been waiting for 2 hours while they tinker with the car, but they still have no idea what the issue is.
