Common 2019 Volvo Xc60 problems

The Volvo XC60, a popular luxury crossover SUV, has been praised for its safety and Scandinavian styling. However, like any vehicle, it has experienced certain recurring reliability trouble spots. Here are some of the most common problems reported by owners:

  • Engine performance issues: Some XC60 owners have experienced stalling, hesitation, or rough idling issues that disrupt the driveability of the vehicle. The 2010 model is said to be the worst culprit for engine problems, with the highest costs for fixes.
  • Tailgate problems: A common issue for XC60 owners is a malfunctioning tailgate, which can result in broken tailgate motors, stiff tailgates, or non-moving tailgates. This can be a significant inconvenience, particularly for those who use their SUV for hauling gear. Volvo has issued recalls for certain models to address these issues, including models built between 2006 and 2018.
  • Loose windscreen wipers: In August 2020, Volvo recalled some cars due to windscreen wiper arms being installed too loosely. This issue could cause the wiper arms to come off the vehicle, making it difficult to see properly.
  • Fuel leaks: In 2009, Volvo issued a recall for the 2010 model due to a problem with the fuel rail line cover, which wasn't correctly installed underneath the car. This left the fuel line vulnerable and open to damage.
  • Fuel pump failure: Earlier versions of the XC60 have had two recalls due to engine stalling issues. The first recall affected the 2010 model year because the software in the central electronic module didn't signal the fuel pump to start or run briefly, causing the engine to stall. To fix it, Volvo updated the software in the CEM module.
  • Infotainment gremlins: For prospective Volvo XC60 buyers, it's crucial to be aware of potential issues, particularly with the electrical and infotainment systems in the 2022 model. Owners have reported instances of the vehicle's screen going blank, leading to a complete shutdown and requiring a restart to resolve. Problems with the Google operating system controlling various functions have also been reported, including app failures and random shutdowns.

Despite these issues, the Volvo XC60 does have a reputation for reliability, finishing in third place out of 24 SUVs in WhatCar’s reliability survey. It has an overall rating of 97.6%, which is outstanding. Volvo is known as a brand for prioritising safety and durability in its vehicles, and the XC60’s engines are relatively trouble-free as long as you have regular maintenance checks.

Negative 2019 Volvo Xc60 car reviews

  1. Burley Jacobson 2024-09-27

If you're considering purchasing this car for its fuel efficiency, you may be disappointed as the battery life is quite short and the car runs on a 2 liter 4 cylinder engine after the battery dies. However, if you're looking for a hybrid car, the gas version may be a better fit for you. It's important to note that the adaptive cruise control feature may not work well on curved roads, so it's best to test drive the car before making a purchase. While the autonomous functions may not be as advanced as a Tesla, Volvo is continuously working to improve them. Overall, it's important to carefully consider your needs and preferences before making a decision.

  2. Trever Swift 2024-09-12

The Fusion red car looks great and the seats are comfortable, making for a comfortable drive on the freeway. However, there are some downsides to consider. The car is slow to accelerate and has a terrible lag when pressing the gas. Additionally, the infotainment system is not user-friendly and the car can be harsh on bumps. The gas mileage is also not as good as advertised, averaging 23 mpg instead of the expected 25-26. While the car looks new and modern, the electronics and engine feel outdated and clunky. Unfortunately, reselling the car was impossible, even when priced 3k below book for 2 months. In the end, I traded it in for a Mercedes at a loss. Overall, I would not recommend this car.

  3. Johnathon Jakubowski 2024-06-24

Although the car has an attractive appearance, there are some issues with the system not booting up when the car is turned on, resulting in a lack of heat/AC or radio for approximately 15 minutes while driving. Additionally, the display screen only works with Android when the phone is physically plugged into the car, and the voice response is consistently unhelpful. However, I am confident that I will be able to resolve these issues and continue to enjoy driving this car. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

  4. Rey Reilly 2024-05-23

In my 20+ years of leasing vehicles, I have had a disappointing experience with Volvo and Karp Volvo as a dealer. The XC90 and XC60 had several issues, including computer problems, electrical problems, battery problems, and issues with tires. Despite my concerns, the dealer was unhelpful and charged me excessively upon lease return. I suggest considering other brands for a more reliable car and better customer service. My experience with Volvo was a letdown, and I felt taken advantage of.

  5. Shad Rempel 2024-03-18

I leased a 2019 XC60 a few months ago and was really excited to finally get a Volvo (I had been wanting one for years). Unfortunately, I have had issues since day one. The biggest issue is the random braking for no reason, which has happened to me multiple times. I sent it back to the dealer for repair and they fixed other things that were wrong (bent rim, warped rotors, bad brake pads -side note, how is there THIS much wrong with a new car?). However, they said when they brought it back to me that nothing is wrong with the autobrake feature. If you're considering buying a car, I would recommend looking into other brands to save yourself the frustration and money.

Positive 2019 Volvo Xc60 car reviews

  1. Erwin Schowalter 2025-02-18

As fellow Volvo owners, we understand the importance of safety and quality. We are grateful for the opportunity to share our positive experience with this amazing brand. A few years ago, we were involved in a serious accident with our S60, but thanks to the advanced safety features of our Volvo, my wife and I were able to walk away unharmed. This experience has truly shown us the value of owning a Volvo. Not only do they prioritize safety, but they also offer luxurious and state-of-the-art technology. We are now proud owners of the XC60, which not only boasts a comfortable interior but also features semi-autonomous drive function, making long road trips a breeze. We believe that safety is priceless, and Volvo truly delivers on that promise!

  2. Ryan Kuphal 2025-02-04

The Volvo XC60 T6 is an excellent vehicle for driving through traffic and merging on highways. It has a sporty feel that is more akin to a sports car than a truck, which is a significant improvement from my previous Jeep Grand Cherokee. The seats are incredibly comfortable, and I had no issues with back, leg, or neck pain or stiffness during a nine-hour trip. The leg extender provides excellent support. The center touchscreen is impressive, although it may take some time to learn the system. While the voice recognition system only works half the time for car-related commands, there are no issues when using it with Apple Car Play. I highly recommend the Volvo XC60!

  3. Toni Boyle 2025-02-02

Choosing between a BMW i3, a Tesla and a Volvo was tough, but I ultimately went for the hybrid AND AWD option due to the snowy Wisconsin winters. Unfortunately, I got a check engine light less than 24 hours after getting the car, but it was quickly resolved. The car is great on electric mode and has enough charge to get me to work and back, with the added bonus of being able to charge at work if needed. The interior is impeccable, the sound is excellent, and the safety features are a must. The 360-degree cameras and parking assistance become second nature, and you may miss them when driving something else. Pilot assist has worked as expected during long distance drives, depending on reliable road markings and weather. The quiet ride on Pure or electric hybrid mode is a nice touch, but the engine can be loud and angry during extreme weather changes. If you're thinking about buying a T8, invest in the higher output outlet for faster charging and have realistic expectations regarding electric range factoring in the use of AC/heating and audio. Driving in B mode helps a bit but won't get anything meaningfully recharged. Lastly, visibility is great. Fingers crossed for no more check engine lights! It's great to see things with fresh eyes, especially when you need them the most.

  4. Mavis Pfannerstill 2025-02-01

I found exactly what I was looking for in the Volvo XC60 Inscription - a small SUV that is stylish, has an upscale interior, and is packed with safety features. Despite my initial concerns about its size, it turned out to be just right. The car has so many features that I am still tweaking settings to my liking, and the safety features are top-notch. Although I never thought I would enjoy vibrating seats, they were included in the model I liked, and now I think they are great - I use them quite often while driving, and my passengers are pleasantly surprised as well. The only minor issue I have noticed so far is that the electronics response time is slower than what I am used to from my previous Lexus vehicles.

  5. Cicero Mayer 2025-01-27

We have owned three XC60s so far, starting with a 2010 model and most recently a 2014. However, this latest one is by far the best. I opted for a fully loaded T5 this time and I am extremely pleased with my choice. Despite our driving habits, the difference in power and acceleration between this and our previous T6 is minimal. The color (blue denim/maroon brown) is lovely and the safety features and technology are fantastic. We love this car so much that we decided to become a two-Volvo family for the first time ever, trading our Acura TLX for an S60 T6 AWD just a week later. As a long-time Volvo owner (since 1985 with models including 740, 960, V70, and XC70), I am thrilled with how this brand has evolved.
