Common 2019 Volvo Xc60 problems
The Volvo XC60, a popular luxury crossover SUV, has been praised for its safety and Scandinavian styling. However, like any vehicle, it has experienced certain recurring reliability trouble spots. Here are some of the most common problems reported by owners:
- Engine performance issues: Some XC60 owners have experienced stalling, hesitation, or rough idling issues that disrupt the driveability of the vehicle. The 2010 model is said to be the worst culprit for engine problems, with the highest costs for fixes.
- Tailgate problems: A common issue for XC60 owners is a malfunctioning tailgate, which can result in broken tailgate motors, stiff tailgates, or non-moving tailgates. This can be a significant inconvenience, particularly for those who use their SUV for hauling gear. Volvo has issued recalls for certain models to address these issues, including models built between 2006 and 2018.
- Loose windscreen wipers: In August 2020, Volvo recalled some cars due to windscreen wiper arms being installed too loosely. This issue could cause the wiper arms to come off the vehicle, making it difficult to see properly.
- Fuel leaks: In 2009, Volvo issued a recall for the 2010 model due to a problem with the fuel rail line cover, which wasn't correctly installed underneath the car. This left the fuel line vulnerable and open to damage.
- Fuel pump failure: Earlier versions of the XC60 have had two recalls due to engine stalling issues. The first recall affected the 2010 model year because the software in the central electronic module didn't signal the fuel pump to start or run briefly, causing the engine to stall. To fix it, Volvo updated the software in the CEM module.
- Infotainment gremlins: For prospective Volvo XC60 buyers, it's crucial to be aware of potential issues, particularly with the electrical and infotainment systems in the 2022 model. Owners have reported instances of the vehicle's screen going blank, leading to a complete shutdown and requiring a restart to resolve. Problems with the Google operating system controlling various functions have also been reported, including app failures and random shutdowns.
Despite these issues, the Volvo XC60 does have a reputation for reliability, finishing in third place out of 24 SUVs in WhatCar’s reliability survey. It has an overall rating of 97.6%, which is outstanding. Volvo is known as a brand for prioritising safety and durability in its vehicles, and the XC60’s engines are relatively trouble-free as long as you have regular maintenance checks.
What is the most common problem with the Volvo XC60?
The XC60's power steering system has been a sore spot for owners, with complaints of whining noises, difficulty turning, and sudden loss of power assist. Many issues stem from a problem between the steering rack and the power-steering high-pressure line.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with Volvo USA. They were kind enough to buy back my 2016 XC90 and now I'm giving the 2019 XC60 a try. It's only been a couple of days, but so far, everything seems to be going well.

Great car. The interior is super nice and the Bower and Wilkins stereo is absolutely spectacular!

We were searching for a mid-size or compact luxury SUV and considered several different Audis, including the Q5, Q7, and SQ5. We also looked at a few Mercedes GLEs and GCLs, and even considered the Porsche Macan S. However, once my wife saw the XC60, she knew it was the one for her. While the XC60 may not have the same in-your-face fun-to-drive factor as the Audi SQ5, the T6 supercharged and turbo engine gets up and going quickly, but smoother than the Audi. Additionally, the infotainment system is sleek and well-designed, and the options that come standard and that are available on the XC60 are long and numerous. My personal favorite is the tracking headlights and the heads-up display. Don't underestimate this Swedish car, as the total package is hard to beat, and the safety rating puts it over the top for us.

If you're considering purchasing this car for its fuel efficiency, you may be disappointed as the battery life is quite short and the car runs on a 2 liter 4 cylinder engine after the battery dies. However, if you're looking for a hybrid car, the gas version may be a better fit for you. It's important to note that the adaptive cruise control feature may not work well on curved roads, so it's best to test drive the car before making a purchase. While the autonomous functions may not be as advanced as a Tesla, Volvo is continuously working to improve them. Overall, it's important to carefully consider your needs and preferences before making a decision.

The Fusion red car looks great and the seats are comfortable, making for a comfortable drive on the freeway. However, there are some downsides to consider. The car is slow to accelerate and has a terrible lag when pressing the gas. Additionally, the infotainment system is not user-friendly and the car can be harsh on bumps. The gas mileage is also not as good as advertised, averaging 23 mpg instead of the expected 25-26. While the car looks new and modern, the electronics and engine feel outdated and clunky. Unfortunately, reselling the car was impossible, even when priced 3k below book for 2 months. In the end, I traded it in for a Mercedes at a loss. Overall, I would not recommend this car.
Johnathon Jakubowski 2024-06-24
Although the car has an attractive appearance, there are some issues with the system not booting up when the car is turned on, resulting in a lack of heat/AC or radio for approximately 15 minutes while driving. Additionally, the display screen only works with Android when the phone is physically plugged into the car, and the voice response is consistently unhelpful. However, I am confident that I will be able to resolve these issues and continue to enjoy driving this car. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

In my 20+ years of leasing vehicles, I have had a disappointing experience with Volvo and Karp Volvo as a dealer. The XC90 and XC60 had several issues, including computer problems, electrical problems, battery problems, and issues with tires. Despite my concerns, the dealer was unhelpful and charged me excessively upon lease return. I suggest considering other brands for a more reliable car and better customer service. My experience with Volvo was a letdown, and I felt taken advantage of.

I leased a 2019 XC60 a few months ago and was really excited to finally get a Volvo (I had been wanting one for years). Unfortunately, I have had issues since day one. The biggest issue is the random braking for no reason, which has happened to me multiple times. I sent it back to the dealer for repair and they fixed other things that were wrong (bent rim, warped rotors, bad brake pads -side note, how is there THIS much wrong with a new car?). However, they said when they brought it back to me that nothing is wrong with the autobrake feature. If you're considering buying a car, I would recommend looking into other brands to save yourself the frustration and money.
