2006 Subaru Baja problems
The Subaru Baja is an all-wheel-drive, four passenger, four-door utility, UTE. Manufactured from 2002 to 2006 by Subaru and marketed for model years 2003 to 2006. The Baja combines the handling and passenger carrying characteristics of a traditional passenger car with the open-bed versatility and load capacity of a very small pickup truck.
The unibody design borrowed heavily from the existing mechanicals, platform and sheet metal of the Subaru Legacy/Outback wagon. Production began on July 18, 2002 as a 2003 model at the Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. factory in Lafayette, Indiana.
The name Baja derives from the Mexican peninsula of Baja California; home to the Baja 1000 off-road race.

Common 2006 Subaru Baja problems
The Subaru Baja, produced between 2003 and 2006, is a unique vehicle that combines the features of a sports car and an SUV, offering all-wheel drive, high clearance, and a truck bed. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of problems, which we will discuss in detail based on the search results.
- Engine Problems: The Baja ranks 5th in reliability out of 17 Subaru models, with owners making 7 complaints over 4 model years, mostly about engine issues.
- Transmission Problems: Transmission issues have been reported by some owners. For instance, one owner had to replace the transmission after 18 months due to the previous owner towing things too big for it. The Baja is not a full-size pick-up, but it may have been used as one, leading to transmission failure.
- Clutch Pedal Issues: Some owners have reported a hard-to-press clutch pedal in the 2005 Baja, with 1 complaint. This issue can be inconvenient and potentially dangerous, as it may affect the driver's ability to control the vehicle.
- Steering and Brakes Problems: One owner reported stalls and losing steering and brakes in the 2004 Baja, with 1 complaint. This issue is particularly concerning, as it can compromise the vehicle's safety and handling.
- Airbags and Seat Belts: The Baja has been affected by the Takata airbag recall, which affects over 37 million vehicles. The shrapnel-hurling inflators have been linked to injuries and deaths, making this a critical safety concern for Baja owners.
- Electrical Issues: One owner reported a non-working radio in the 2003 Baja, with 1 complaint. While this issue may not be as critical as some of the others, it can still affect the overall driving experience and convenience.
- Interior Problems: One owner reported interior issues in the 2003 Baja, with 1 complaint. This issue can affect the vehicle's comfort and overall appeal.
These problems, while concerning, should be considered in the context of the Baja's unique features and overall reliability. It is essential for potential buyers to research and consider these issues when deciding whether to purchase a Subaru Baja.

I NOW HAVE TO HAVE THE WHOLE SUBFRAME REPLACED IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE AS THE SUBFRAME TOTALLY RUSTED OUT. THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO A FRIEND OF MINE WHO HAD A 2003 BAJA. ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

- VIN: 4S4BT63C766
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I HAVE A 2006 BAJA TURBO, OBSIDIAN BLACK, 5 SPEED. IT HAS (60K) ON THE ODOMETER. I BOUGHT IT NEW AND LOVED IT FROM DAY ONE. HOWEVER, FEBRUARY OF LAST YEAR THAT LOVE WAS LOST. THE CEL CAME ON AND I WENT TO AUTOZONE TO HAVE THE CODE PULLED. IT SHOWED PO304. I WAS TOLD IT WAS A MISFIRE ON CYLINDER #4. I ASKED THE GUY THERE WHAT THE CAUSE COULD BE. HE SAID IT COULD BE ANYTHING FROM A FUEL INJECTOR, TO THE COIL PACK OR A VALVE ISSUE. I LOOKED UP ON THIS FORUM AND THERE WERE MULTIPLE CASES THAT PULLED UP. I READ WHAT FIXES WORKED FOR SOME AND NOT FOR OTHERS. I TRIED INJECTOR CLEANER. THAT DID NOTHING. I INSTALLED A NEW COIL PACK ON CYLINDER FOUR. IT RAN BETTER FOR A SHORT TIME AND THEN THE CEL CAME BACK ON. I REPLACED ALL FOUR SPARK PLUGS. ONCE AGAIN A SHORT TERM FIX, JUST A FEW MILES. FINALLY, I INSTALLED A NEW FUEL INJECTOR. AGAIN BETTER, THEN MUCH WORSE. I TOOK TO THE BAJA TO A LOCAL SUBARU DEALER FEARING THE WORST. SURE ENOUGH, BURNT EXHAUST VALVES ON CYLINDERS #2 AND #4. THEY GAVE A ROUGH QUOTE OF 5-6K TO FIX IT. I WAS OFFERED 7K FOR THE TRUCK IN THE SHAPE IT WAS IN. ANGERED BY THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE, I SENT A LETTER TO SUBARU OF AMERICA AND SUBARU JAPAN EXPLAINING IN GREAT DETAIL THE ISSUE AND THAT THERE WERE SEVERAL SIMILAR CASES NOTED ONLINE IN VARIOUS MODELS OF SUBARU WITH THE EJ255 ENGINE. I WAS HOPING THEY WOULD OFFER SOME ASSISTANCE, NO DICE. THEY BASICALLY THANKED FOR SENDING THEM THE LETTER AND TELLING THEM OF THE ISSUE. THEY STATED SINCE THE BAJA WAS OUT OF WARRANTY AND THERE WAS NO RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE, THERE WAS NOTHING THEY WOULD DO. *TR

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2006-11-20
- VIN: 4S4BT63C266
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: MY VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY IN THE SHOP FOR THE 8TH TIME FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. EACH TIME A DIFFERENT PART OR PARTS WERE REPLACED AND EACH TIME THE DEALER STATED THAT THE CAR WAS FIXED BUT THE SAME BEHAVIOR WOULD COME BACK, SOMETIMES WITHIN A WEEK OR SOMETIMES MANY MONTHS AFTER THE REPAIR. THERE IS NO RHYME OR REASON AS TO WHEN IT HAPPENS (IE. NOTHING LEADS UP TO IT HAPPENING) BUT BASICALLY, IT HESITATES AND SPUTTERS OR LUNGES FORWARD WHILE YOU ARE ACCELERATING. IT'S AS IF THE ACCELERATION JUST DROPS OUT BUT THEN COMES BACK OR ACCELERATES AND THEN BACKS OFF AGAIN. SOMETIMES IT IS SUBTLE; SOMETIMES IT HESITATES OR ACCELERATES VIOLENTLY. I HAVE SPOKEN TO THE MANUFACTURER SEVERAL TIMES ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. THEY HAVE EXTENDED MY WARRANTY FOR FREE AND ALSO PROVIDE ME WITH A LOANER CAR WHEN IT IS IN FOR SERVICE AS A SIGN OF GOOD WILL, BUT IT IS OBVIOUS THAT THIS CAR IS DANGEROUS. I AM SERIOUSLY AFRAID THAT EVENTUALLY I WILL BE HIT FROM BEHIND WHEN IT HESITATES OR HIT SOMEONE FROM BEHIND WHEN IT ACCELERATES UNEXPECTEDLY. I'M NOT SURE THE CAR IS EVEN ABLE TO BE FIXED CONSIDERING THEY HAVE BEEN TRYING TO REPAIR IT FOR 2 YEARS NOW. DATES OF SERVICE ARE 11/20/06, 12/3/06, 2/12/07, 2/21/07, 3/8/07, 3/8/08, 7/22/08 AND 11/8/08 (THE DEALER STILL HAS IT AS OF TODAY, 12/9/08). DAYS OUT OF SERVICE IS APPROX. 82 SO FAR. I DON'T KNOW IF THE OLD PARTS ARE AVAILABLE AS THE DEALER HAS KEPT ALL OF THOSE; I DO HAVE SERVICE RECORDS FOR EACH TIME AT THE DEALER FOR REPAIRS AND WHAT WAS DONE EACH TIME. I AM ALSO CURRENTLY DEALING WITH A REGIONAL REP FROM SUBARU WHO NEVER RETURNS MY CALLS. I'VE OWNED ONE OTHER SUBARU AND ONLY HAD MINOR AND ORDINARILY PROBLEMS WITH THAT CAR. SUBARU NEEDS TO STEP UP AND DO THE RIGHT THING BY GETTING THIS DANGEROUS CAR OFF THE ROAD. *TR

TIRES PROBLEM

- VIN: 4S4BT63C065
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: ON MARCH 16TH 2007 I WAS DRIVING FROM MY HOME IN FORT MYERS FLORIDA TO A BUSINESS MEETING IN CLEARWATER FLORIDA. I WAS DRIVING ON INTERSTATE 75 GOING NORTH. I WAS APPROXIMATELY A QUARTER OF A MILE FROM THE SKYWAY BRIDGE. SINCE THIS IS A TOLL BRIDGE I WAS DECREASING IN SPEED GETTING READY TO MAKE A STOP, AT THAT TIME, THERE WAS A LOUD EXPLOSION AND BEFORE I COULD THINK I WAS BEGINNING TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE CAR. THE EXPLOSION OR IMPLOSION WAS THE REAR DRIVER SIDE TIRE COMPLETELY CAME OFF THE RIM OF THE CAR. THIS SENT ME INTO A TAIL SPIN TRYING TO CONTROL THE CAR AT WHICH TIME THE CAR CAME UP ON TWO WHEELS. I THEN PROCEEDED INTO THE DITCH AND WAS ABLE TO STOP THE CAR. I THEN CALLED ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE WHICH THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER STATED HE NEVER SAW ANYTHING LIKE THIS. WE WERE ABLE TO GET A SPARE TIRE ON THE CAR SO THAT I COULD DRIVE TO A TIRE SHOP TO HAVE THE TIRE REPLACED. THIS WAS A NIGHTMARE TO SAY THE LEAST. I FIRST CALLED THE DEALERSHIP SINCE I HAPPENED TO PURCHASE THE CAR FROM A DEALERSHIP IN WHICH MY BUSINESS MEETING WAS BEING HELD. THE CAR DEALERSHIP MASTRO MOTORS STATED THAT THEY DO NOT KEEP TIRES IN STOCK. I EXPLAINED THIS CARE ALMOST KILLED ME AND THE RESPONSE WAS THAT I PURCHASED TIRE INSURANCE TO CALL THEM. I THEN CALLED SUBRAU ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT THEY DO NOT WARRANTY THE TIRES AND THAT I WOULD HAVE TO CALL BRIDGESTONE. I THEN CALLED BRIDGESTONE AND THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO HELP ME FIND AN ATHORIZED SERVICE CENTER. I THEN FOUND A FIRESTONE TIRE OUTLET IN WHICH AFTER DRIVING AROUND ALL WEEKEND ON A SPARE TIRE WERE FINALLY ABLE TO GET THE CORRECT TIRE FOR MY CAR AND REPLACE IT. I NOW HAVE THE TIRE THAT EXPLODED ON IN MY POSSESION AS PROOF THAT THIS TIRE IS CLEARLY A DEFECT AS I HAVE NOT OWNED MY CAR MORE THAT SIX MONTHS. I PURCHASED THIS CAR NEW AND IT HAS ABOUT 5400 MILES TOTAL ON THE CAR. AT THIS TIME I DO NOT FEEL SAFE WITH THE TIRES ON THIS CAR. *AK

I can tell you really love your Baja! It's great to hear that it handles well, is comfortable, and has plenty of room for your cargo. I understand that you wish the gas mileage was better, but overall it sounds like you're really happy with your vehicle.

As a student, I don't need a big truck. The versatility of the Baja is optimal as it hauls everything I need it to with a funky style that surprisingly many appreciate. These are great trucks that will hold their value and hopefully, one day, be a collector's car.

I was looking for a new car or pick-up truck, but I couldn't decide until I found the 2006 Subaru Baja. It's everything I wanted! It drives like a car, and I can even pick up furniture or other items without having to pay for deliveries. Although it's a little bit sluggish, I was pleasantly surprised by its fuel economy. I'm getting around 27 mpg with mixed driving. All I need now is a cargo cover so I can pick up the kids and go grocery shopping even when it's raining.

I bought my (turbo) Baja to combine my truck and car needs into one vehicle. It handles just as well as my Mustang and is a lot of fun to drive, costing me about the same in gas. The fold-down back seat belongs to my Shar-Pei, and when he's not aboard, it's perfect for all my shopping needs. The locking bed is even better than any trunk I have ever had. It turns heads while I'm out and about, and there is no lack of power, surprising many. It has perfect lines, and the leather interior is the perfect touch for the nearly perfect vehicle which I call the 'lady's pick up' as it's petite, sleek, fashionable, and truly the best purchase I have ever made.

I'm glad to hear that you appreciate the versatility and low entry of the vehicle. I understand that the lack of storage compartments can be inconvenient, and that the back seat compartment may be too small for your needs. However, it's great to know that the vehicle handles well in both rain and snow.

I'm really enjoying driving the Baja! It's so much fun because of its accurate steering and light weight. It's amazing how much aluminum is used in this vehicle, from the motor heads and block to the tranny and differential cover. Even though the bed looks small, I was able to fit a full-sized dirt bike (300cc) with gear bag and tool box in it, without even folding down the pass-through door to the cab. People are always surprised when they see it fit! However, I must admit that the Baja is not the fastest car I've ever driven. My Isuzu pickup with a 2.6L 4 cylinder motor (compared to the Baja's 2.5L 4 cylinder) and 225k miles on it is three times quicker. But, I'm not exaggerating when I say that I'm really enjoying driving the Baja!
