2017 Ford F-450 problems

The Ford Super Duty (also known as the Ford F-Series Super Duty) is a series of heavy-duty pickup trucks produced by the Ford Motor Company since the 1999 model year. Slotted above the consumer-oriented Ford F-150, the Super Duty trucks are an expansion of the Ford F-Series range, from F-250 to the F-600. The F-250 through F-450 are offered as pickup trucks, while the F-350 through F-600 are offered as chassis cabs.

Rather than adapting the lighter-duty F-150 truck for heavier use, Super Duty trucks have been designed as a dedicated variant of the Ford F-Series. The heavier-duty chassis components allow for heavier payloads and towing capabilities. With a GVWR over 8,500 lb (3,900 kg), Super Duty pickups are Class 2 and 3 trucks, while chassis-cab trucks are offered in Classes 3, 4, 5, and 6. The model line also offers Ford Power Stroke V8 diesel engines as an option.

Ford also offers a medium-duty version of the F-Series (F-650 and F-750), which is sometimes branded as the Super Duty, but is another chassis variant. The Super Duty pickup truck also served as the basis for the Ford Excursion full-sized SUV.

The Super Duty trucks and chassis-cabs are assembled at the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky, and at Ohio Assembly in Avon Lake, Ohio. Prior to 2016, medium-duty trucks were assembled in Mexico under the Blue Diamond Truck joint venture with Navistar International.

Common 2017 Ford F-450 problems

Based on complaints from owners of the 2017 Ford F-450, several common problems have been reported:

  • Door Handle Malfunction: Some Ford F-450 vehicles originally produced with black or body-colored exterior door handles that were subsequently equipped with chrome exterior door handle cover accessory kits have experienced issues where the doors may unlatch during a side impact collision. This problem can lead to non-compliance with safety standards. Ford has addressed this by removing the accessory covers and refunding the purchase price .
  • Tire Sidewall Damage: Certain 2016 Ford F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550 trucks manufactured within a specific timeframe were found to have tires with damage to the inner sidewall, potentially causing air loss or tire rupture. Ford has conducted inspections and replaced damaged tires as necessary to rectify this issue .
  • Driveshaft Imbalance and Fracture: In some 2017-2018 F-Super Duty F-250, F-350, and F-450 4x4 vehicles, a radial damper inside the driveshaft may move out of position over time, leading to a driveshaft imbalance and potential fracture. Ford has addressed this by replacing the driveshaft to resolve the imbalance issue .
  • Fuel Pump Contamination: Owners have reported issues with the fuel pump causing contamination of the entire system, resulting in a costly repair of around $16,000. While this problem should ideally be covered under the factory warranty, some owners have faced challenges with warranty coverage .

These common problems with the 2017 Ford F-450 highlight various safety and performance issues that owners have encountered, prompting recalls and necessary repairs by Ford to address these concerns.

With the 2022, you would only pay, on average, 100% of the price as new, with 100% of the vehicle's useful life remaining. The 2021 and 2019 model years are also attractive years for the F-450 Super Duty, and provide a relatively good value.

We observed 13 mpg throughout the F-450's stay, during which the average price of a gallon of diesel flirted with three dollars. This behemoth returned 16 mpg on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test, just 1 mpg worse than the gas-powered, three-quarter-ton Ford F-250.

Why avoid 2017 F 250?

What Owners Say. "Front ball joint became loose and needed to be replaced." "Truck arms replaced every 14000 miles after 60000 miles on the truck. Various parts of front end suspension have to be rebuilt every year at a cost of $1200 or more."

Is a F-450 better than a F-350?

If the majority of miles you put on your truck involve very heavy towing or hauling, the 450 is the way to go. Towing will be much more pleasant, and the truck will handle much better loaded. Any other case, and I'd go F350 SRW if you want to do some moderately heavy towing and hauling and also want a pleasant daily.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-06-16
  • VIN: 1FT8W4DT8HE
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: Tailgate opens unexpectedly while vehicle is in motion. This has happened repeatedly over the past 12 months. After confirming that the tailgate was not inadvertently left open or opened while the vehicle was moving, we realized that the problem was internal. We could not find a cause of the problem with the tailgate opening. It caused damage to the tailgate and the towed fifth wheel. Cargo items stored in the truck bed (under the tonneau cover) have fallen out onto the road when the tailgate opens unexpectedly. This could have caused a major accident or death. I believe this truck has an electric tailgate latch release switch in the tailgate handle and I'm not sure whether this is a possible cause. We took the truck to the Ford dealer who advised that the tailgate was not covered by any recall or warranty other than the extended warranty we purchased, for which we had to pay a deductible. The Ford dealer is also denying any responsibility for damage to the tailgate itself, damage to the fifth wheel, or damage from and loss of loose cargo falling out. We paid for the fix to the defective tailgate mechanism but feel strongly that this should be recalled due to the high risk of death or injury when the tailgate opens unexpectedly. Below date is only the most recent occurrence; as stated above, this has occurred multiple times including approximately June 12, 2021, April 20, 2021, September 24, 2020, September 30, 2020, August 9, 2020, and November 24, 2019.

The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was relating the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 19V864000 (Latches/Locks/Linkages). The manufacturer had been informed of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 128,000.

  • Summary: BROUGHT MY TRUCK INTO THE FORD DEALERSHIP BECAUSE THE DOOR WAS NOT LATCHING CLOSED AT ALL. THE TRUCK IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY AND HAS LESS THAN 20K MILES. LATER THAT DAY THE DEALERSHIP CALLED AND TOLD ME THE TRUCK WAS FIXED AND READY TO BE PICKED UP. LESS THAN 48 HOURS LATER THE LATCH AGAIN WOULD NOT WORK. THEY AGAIN SAID IT WOULD BE FIXED AND THEY TOLD ME I WAS GIVING THEM 'ATTITUDE' BECAUSE I WAS UPSET THAT IT DIDN'T GET FIXED THE FIRST TIME. ONCE I GOT HOME I CALLED ANOTHER DEALERSHIP AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT THERE WAS ACTUALLY A RECALL FOR THIS EXACT ISSUE. MY BIGGEST GRIPE IS THAT THE FIRST DEALERSHIP NEVER INFORMED ME OF A KNOWN SAFETY ISSUE WITH MY VEHICLE AFTER BRINGING IT IN TWO TIMES WITHIN A THREE DAY PERIOD. I FOUND IT TO BE ALARMING THAT THEY WOULD SEND ME BACK OUT ON THE ROAD WITHOUT FIXING OR EVEN INFORMING ME ABOUT THIS POTENTIAL HAZARD RECALL.

  • Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
  • Components: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:DOORS:LATCH
  • Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2015-2017 F-150, and 2017 F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550 vehicles originally produced with black or body colored exterior door handles that may have been subsequently equipped with a chrome exterior door handle cover accessory kit purchased from a Ford dealer. These accessory door handle covers may cause the doors to unlatch in a side impact collision. As such, these vehicles may fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 206, "Door Locks and Door Retention Components."
  • Consequence: If the doors unlatch and open in a side impact collision, the occupants have an increased risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will remove the accessory covers and refund the purchase price. The recall began July 13, 2017. Owners may contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for the recall is 17C09.
