2001 Toyota Echo problems
The Toyota Platz (Japanese:トヨタ・プラッツ, Toyota Purattsu) is a subcompact car that was manufactured in Japan by Toyota from 1999 until 2005, when it was replaced by the Belta. Designated by Toyota as the XP10 series, the Platz was also sold in export markets as either the Toyota Yaris or Toyota Echo. The "Yaris" and "Echo" names were also given to the export version of the related Japanese market Vitz hatchback, from which the Platz derives. In Japan, it was available at the Toyopet Store and the Netz Toyota Store dealerships.
Etymology
The name "Platz" is German for "space" (as defined by "the interior room is spacious"). Only straight-four engines were fitted to the Platz, which was sold in Japan as a four-door sedan only. A coupé version was also available in North America where the car was badged "Echo".
History
The Platz was introduced in 1999 as a sedan sold internationally, with a coupé version exclusive to North America following for the 2000 model year. The Platz is closely related to the Vitz hatchback with which it shares front doors, a common interior and mechanical componentry. The running gear is also shared to a lesser degree with the ist and bB, sold in the United States as the Scion xA and xB respectively, and the JDM-only WiLL Vi. The same platform is the base for the JDM-only Probox and Succeed wagons.
In the United States, the Echo sold almost 50,000 units in its first year, with just half that many in 2003. The Echo was an element of Toyota Project Genesis, a failed effort to bring younger buyers to the marque in the United States. The Echo sold in high volumes in Canada, where Toyota also offered the three- and five-door hatchback versions of the Vitz badged as the Echo beginning with the 2004 model year to replace the Echo coupé (which was dropped after 2003). The coupé remained on sale in the United States until the 2005 model year along with the sedan, while the hatchback variants were never sold there. It was the predecessor to the current North American Yaris, sharing many identical features, such as the odd (and somewhat controversial) center placement of the speedometer and gauges, as opposed to in front of the steering wheel. Power options on the Echo are a rare find; most models are equipped with manual windows and locks, air conditioning, and a six-speaker audio system with a CD and/or a cassette player.

Common 2001 Toyota Echo problems
The 2001 Toyota Echo has been known for its reliability and fuel efficiency, but like any car, it has its common problems that owners have reported. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues:
- Squeaks and rattles: Some owners have reported hearing squeaks and rattles coming from the body of the car. These noises are not necessarily a big deal, but they can be annoying. They are often caused by loose interior trim pieces or worn out suspension components.
- Fuel filler neck collapse: A common problem with the 2001 Toyota Echo is the fuel filler neck collapsing, making it difficult to fill up the gas tank. This issue can be caused by the filler neck's plastic material becoming brittle over time.
- Clutch replacement: Some owners have reported having to replace the clutch, especially if the car is driven aggressively or if the driver is still learning how to drive a manual transmission.
- Interior maintenance: The interior of the 2001 Toyota Echo can become worn out over time, especially if the car is used frequently or if the owner does not take good care of it. This can include issues with the seats, carpet, and dash.
- Wind buffeting: Some owners have reported experiencing wind buffeting while driving on the highway, especially if the car is driven at high speeds. This issue can be caused by the car's small size and lack of aerodynamic features.
It's important to note that these problems are not necessarily widespread, and many 2001 Toyota Echo owners have reported having few or no issues with their cars. However, it's always a good idea to thoroughly inspect any car before purchasing it, and to be aware of potential issues that may arise in the future.

- Crash: 1

- Summary: THIS IS AN INCIDENT I EVENTUALLY PUT BEHIND MYSELF, BUT THE RECENT NEWS ABOUT TOYOTA HAS RESURRECTED THE EVENTS THAT TOOK PLACE ON 5/5/02 IN MY 01 TOYOTA ECHO (I CAN PROVIDE THE VIN# AND THE INCIDENT HAPPENED IN BELEWS CREEK, NC). I WAS BACKING OUT OF MY DRIVE WAY AND WAS UNABLE TO STOP MY CAR WHEN I APPLIED MY BRAKE AND I ENDED UP GOING INTO THE TREES AND DOWN A HILL BEFORE MY CAR WAS STOPPED BY THE TREE THAT THE TRUNK OF MY CAR HIT. I WAS CONVINCED I HAD HIT THE BRAKE. I EVEN TOOK MY OTHER FOOT AND TRIED TO USE BOTH FEET TO STOP THE CAR (I CRUSHED THE TOP OF MY FOOT WITH MY OTHER SHOE ' THAT IS HOW MUCH PRESSURE I TRIED TO APPLY). I RESEARCHED OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE BREAKS STICKING AND REMEMBER SOMETHING BEING SAID ABOUT COOL AMBIENT TEMPERATURES. I CONTACTED TOYOTA USA AND NHTSA AND PROVIDED WEATHER TEMPERATURES AND OTHER DETAILS ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED. I EVEN REQUESTED REPAIRS NOT BE MADE TO THE CAR UNTIL IT WAS INSPECTED. I WAS TOLD NOTHING WAS FOUND UPON INSPECTION AND I MY CLAIM WAS BASICALLY DISMISSED. THE ACCIDENT WENT ON MY RECORD AS MY FAULT SO OF COURSE MY PREMIUMS WENT UP FOR YEARS. I WAS MOST FRUSTRATED AND I CAN'T EVEN BEGIN TO EXPLAIN HOW IT FELT TO HAVE SO MANY PEOPLE NOT BELIEVE ME. I FEEL IT AFFECTED MY CONFIDENCE AS A DRIVER AND I WAS SO NERVOUS DRIVING THAT CAR THAT I TRADED IT IN NOT LONG AFTERWARDS. I ALSO TRADED IN THE TOYOTA TUNDRA I HAD RECENTLY PURCHASED. I WROTE TOYOTA AND TOLD THEM IF THIS WAS HOW THEY TREATED THEIR CUSTOMERS, THEN I WOULD NOT REMAIN A CUSTOMER AND WOULD NEVER RETURN. I AM WRITING THIS EMAIL BECAUSE I KNOW THAT THIS WAS BROUGHT TO TOYOTA'S ATTENTION THAT THERE WAS EVIDENCE OF PROBLEMS EVEN EARLIER THAN WHAT THEY ARE CURRENTLY ACKNOWLEDGING. THE FACT THAT IT HAD TO TAKE PEOPLE DYING FOR THEM TO NOTICE IS COMPLETELY APPALLING TO ME! I UNDERSTAND THAT THERE ARE BOUND TO BE PROBLEMS WITH VIRTUALLY EVERY MAKE AND MODEL OF CAR, BUT IGNORING CLAIMS LIKE THIS IS COMPLETE NEGLIGENCE. *TR

2001 Toyota Echo recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2001 Toyota Echo.
- Manufacturer: TOYOTA MOTOR NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, DUE TO IMPROPER MOLDING OF THE RESIN BODY OF THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENOR INSTALLED ON THE ENGINE BLOCK, ENGINE OIL MAY PENETRATE THE SEAL AND ENTER THE SENSOR WIRING CONNECTOR. THE WIRE HARNESS CONNECTOR MAY NOT BE SUFFICIENTLY ATTACHED TO THE LOCKING TAB OF THE SENSOR WIRING CONNECTOR.
- Consequence: ENGINE OIL INSIDE THE SENSOR WIRING CONNECTOR COULD CAUSE EXPANSION DUE TO THE HEAT OF THE ENGINE AND COULD DEFORM THE SENSOR WIRING CONNECTOR. THE CONNECTOR MAY BECOME DISCONNECTED, WHICH COULD CAUSE THE ENGINE TO STALL WHILE DRIVING AND NOT BE ABLE TO BE RESTARTED INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 26, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.
- Manufacturer: TOYOTA MOTOR NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS
- Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, IF THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN UNDER REPEATED START AND STOP OPERATION IN LOW AMBIENT TEMPERATURES AND IN DEEP SNOW, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT SNOW COULD ACCUMULATE IN LARGE QUANTITIES INSIDE THE REAR WHEEL AND FREEZE. THE SNOW FROZEN INSIDE THE WHEEL COULD CONTACT THE REAR BRAKE LINE DURING WHEEL ROTATION.
- Consequence: IF THIS CONDITION OCCURS FREQUENTLY, THE REAR BRAKE LINE COULD BE DAMAGED, WHICH COULD RESULT IN LEAKAGE OF BRAKE FLUID, CAUSING A DECREASE IN BRAKE EFFECTIVENESS.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE REAR BRAKE LINES. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN NOVEMBER 9, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.
Negative 2001 Toyota Echo car reviews
Positive 2001 Toyota Echo car reviews
-
I purchased my Echo as a new car six years ago and have been driving it 80 miles to work, 160 miles round trip, six days a week, for a total of 50,000 miles per year. The fuel mileage is impressive, with 43 miles per gallon in the summer, 40 miles per gallon in the spring and fall, and 38 miles per gallon in the winter when it's below zero. I have had very few repairs, with only the rear shocks and O2 sensor needing replacement at 100,000 miles, front brake pads at 220,000 miles, and left front wheel bearing at 260,000 miles. The car still has its original struts, rear brakes, and more. Although the driver's seat is worn out, I still find the car comfortable even after spending three hours a day in it. The car still drives great with no squeaks or rattles.
-
Your Echo sounds like a great car! With over 80,000 miles on it and still running perfectly since day one, it's clear that you made a smart choice. Plus, getting over 40 MPG when keeping it under 65 mph on the freeway is impressive and cost-effective. At less than $13,000 out the door, it's definitely a great value. While hybrid buyers may take a while to make up the difference in purchase price, your Echo is a reliable and efficient option. It handles and accelerates great, even if it's a little noisy on the freeway and has some rough shifting at times. But with the ability to go over 400 miles on just 10 gallons of gas, it's definitely worth it.
-
I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my Echo. Over the past 2 years, I've driven it for 36000 miles, including 3000 miles across the country and 1600 miles every month on long distance hauls up the I-5 corridor on the West Coast. I must say, the fuel efficiency is excellent, the acceleration is among the best I have experienced, and it is reliable and roomy. The only thing I regret is not getting the power locks, but other than that, it's great!
-
This has been the best car I owned. I have 160,000 miles and have never had a single problem. I did not need brakes until 135,000. There is no rust anywhere, and I'd drive it anywhere! This car has better leg and head room than most any other car I've sat in. It's fun to drive and has great mileage (>40 hwy). The stereo is also great! I wonder why they stopped making this car?
-
If you're looking for a great deal, consider a used car! I was feeling the pinch after driving my PT Cruiser 100 miles round trip to work, and only getting 22 MPG on the highway. A friend of mine recommended a 2001 ECHO with 236K miles on it, which he said was averaging 44 miles per gallon. So I went shopping and found one with 92K miles for $4200. Now I'm averaging 47.4 miles per gallon! It's a 5-speed with air and power steering, and while it's not a hybrid, it's definitely a gas sipper. I'm thrilled with this car, especially with gas prices at $4.30 per gallon. Plus, it's fun to drive!

I've driven a few cars in my time, including a bug, a fiesta, a fiat (don't ask), a metro, and a diesel rabbit, but I have to say that this Echo is the best drive yet. Even though I don't drive many miles, I really enjoy the ones I do in this car. The MPG is 32-38 with auto, and it still needs the clock they never put in it, but the room is great. I'm 6 feet and 240#, but I still find it comfortable. The gauges look fine in the middle too, and it's easy to park with a smooth ride.

Hey there! I'm glad to hear that your car has been treating you well for the past five years and 45,000 miles. It sounds like you're planning to get another five years out of it, which is great! It's always nice to have a reliable car that you can count on.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share some information about my car with you. I bought it used in May 2005 with 24,940 miles on it, and now it has 34,600 miles. Recently, I had to fix the a/c and ended up spending $150.00 to replace all the o-rings and recharge the Freon. I also had to fix the tie rod end link bushing on the left front side, which cost me $75.00. Despite these minor issues, I'm happy to report that I'm averaging 32.5 mpgs since I've owned it. During the winter, I average 27 mpgs on short trips with a cold motor, but on a long highway trip (150 miles round trip) with a little a/c usage, I got an impressive 40.5 mpgs with the auto trans. I did have 195/60 14 tires put on, but they had high rolling resistance, which I didn't know at the time and caused me to lose about 3 mpgs. I save every gas receipt, and I'm always looking for ways to improve my car's performance. One thing I've noticed is that the a/c system could be more powerful, as it only holds 17 oz of Freon. Additionally, crosswinds can be a bit of a challenge on the highway, but city driving is okay. Thanks for listening!

I recently rented a 2002 Toyota Echo and overall, it was a decent car. The interior and trunk were adequate for my needs. However, I did find that the car was designed to make the driver very focused on the controls, which may not be suitable for everyone. It could be challenging for those who are frail, elderly, young, or inexperienced to handle the steering on this rental. While I was able to compensate for turns while in motion, those from a stop were more difficult and required some effort. Additionally, it took some brute force to extract myself from a parallel parking position. I drove the car for approximately 30 miles and would recommend anyone considering purchasing this car to rent it for a day to get a better feel for it. Lastly, I did notice that the exterior paint had far too many dimples with rust, which may be a concern for some buyers.
