Common 2012 Volvo Xc60 problems
The Volvo XC60 2012 has been praised by many owners for its turbo performance, safety, and overall quality. However, some common problems have been reported by owners that potential buyers should be aware of.
One issue is that windscreens can occasionally leak in the 2012 Volvo XC60, which can be caused by various factors such as manufacturing or installation faults. If it's not a manufacturing or installation fault, the owner would have to pay for the replacement. It's recommended to try one of the windscreen companies, which should be cheaper than going through the dealer.
Another problem reported is that the electronic parking brake may not release due to a sensor that mistakenly detects one of the doors to be open. This issue can be resolved by checking the sensor and ensuring that it's working correctly.
Early Volvo XC60 Mk1 models can also suffer from locking and latching problems if the temperature falls below zero degrees Celsius. This issue can be resolved by checking the locking and latching system and ensuring that it's working correctly.
The XC60 has been recalled no less than 33 times, with issues ranging from minor problems like faulty fuel gauges to more serious issues such as fuel leaks, gearboxes jamming, and airbags not deploying. It's recommended to check if the car has had all the necessary repair work done before committing to a purchase.
A software malfunction on the engine fan control module can cause air-conditioning performance to be reduced and the coolant temperature to increase. In extreme cases, this can cause the engine to fail. This issue can be resolved by checking the engine fan control module and ensuring that it's working correctly.
Fuel leaks have also been reported on some models, which can be caused by the fuel rail beneath the vehicle not being properly attached in some cases, thereby exposing the fuel lines to possible damage. This issue can be resolved by checking the fuel rail and ensuring that it's properly attached.
Power steering issues have also been reported, which can be caused by the joint between the power steering high-pressure line and the steering gear not being assembled correctly, resulting in fluid leaking and a sudden loss of powered assistance. This issue can be resolved by checking the power steering system and ensuring that it's working correctly.
Potential engine fire is another issue that Volvo is in the process of recalling around 70,000 cars in the UK fitted with a 2.0-litre diesel engine because of potential engine fires. Owners are being told to pay attention to any unusual smells coming into the interior, the engine warning light illuminating, or the engine hesitating under acceleration.
Despite these problems, XC60s are generally well made and are showing that they are kinder to their parts than rivals, meaning they last longer. Electronics and brake discs both excel here, lasting 80,000 miles and 55,000 miles respectively.
What is the common problem with Volvo XC60?
XC60 owners don't usually buy these SUVs for speed but expect solid reliability. However, many drivers say they experience stalling, hesitation, or rough idling issues that disrupt the driveability of the XC60. Sources say the 2010 model is the worst culprit for engine problems and carries the highest costs for fixes.

AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS,SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-12
- VIN: YV4902DZXC2
- Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS,SEATS
- Summary: It was explained to me that since the Back rear seat in the Volvo XC60 seatbelt had a fault that it alerted the SRS airbag system. In event of a crash the airbags in my car would not deploy and that the only remedy was to replace the entire seatbelt in the Volvo. To prove this point I took my car in to a Volvo dealership and the technicians offered the fix as the only way my cars airbags would work if i got it fixed.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-10-12
- VIN: YV4902DZ7C2
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: On October 12, 2022 while driving home from the Schar Cancer Center in Fairfax, my 2012 Volvo XC60 experienced an end of life event. My check engine light came on when I entered my neighborhood. The car began sputtering and the gas pedal was delayed and at times, unresponsive. I was able to make it to my house and made an appointment to service my Volvo. My Volvo was towed to GT Peace Automotive on November 6. The three-week delay was due to their backlog of work. They are a trusted repair service and have provided service to all my vehicles over the past four years. The attached document indicates their assessment. Highlights include that the Volvo was a fire hazard in its current condition, the ignition coils were melted, and the circuits are shorted. GT Peace provided an estimate of $3,500 for repairs as a starting point to fully replace the engine harness. Their evaluation concluded that, based on other findings, the cost would easily go north of $3,500, possibly to $5,500. Based on this assessment and the CARFAX History Based Value of my vehicle (private party value of $10,170), it was in my best interest to donate the vehicle. I gave it to the Auto Tech program at Centreville High School on November 9, 2022.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-10-08
- VIN: YV4940DL4C2
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: A faulty radiator anti-tamper device caused loss of communication to the engine control computer. The check engine light turns on and “charging failure-service urgent” message pops up during driving. Which cause the drivers worry even panic. I talked to local dealer several times. I was told to change battery everytime. But my battery and alternator were both tested fine. The message could pop up right after full charged battery. There are many complains at Volvo forums. Volvo knows the issue, but they decided not to recall it. The check engine light and messages pops up on and off by itself. The DTC codes are normally U0286 and/or B1087. I am already changed one battery. The problem is still there. It could cause accident because the message pops up during driving on highway and cause unnecessary worry and panic.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-15
- VIN: YV4940DZ0C2
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: "Failure Charging" warning advisory light came on the dashboard. This problem has been going on for the whole ten years I have owned this vehicle. I am the original owner of this Volvo and had some engine warning on the dashboard since the first month. I took vehicle in to the Culver City Volvo for 1000 miles check-up and annual oil change and check-up for 5 years under warranty and requested software update and reported the engine stalling during the first month. The "failure charging" or "engine check" or "dangerous" "immediate" repair needed signs came on sometimes and did not come on other time. When the "failure charging" sign comes on and the engine is turned off and restarted the warning would go away sometimes. I believe this is a Volvo vehicle computer software malfunction. I reported this problem to the dealer for 5 years during annual service appointments. This problem was not solved and I have lived with this, stupidly patient for 10 years. Today, problem light came on during biennial smog check for vehicle license renewal and failed the smog test. So, I informed the mechanic and tried a second test several minutes later and passed the second time because the software problem did not surface this time. So, my question is: has this Volvo software problem been reported by others as I have heard by word of mouth that this software problem is found on Volvo cars? And, has there been a recall to fix this Volvo software problem? When this "failure charging" sign comes on, it is very worrisome and makes me feel the vehicle may stop on the road.
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-21
- VIN: YV4940DZ8C2
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: The front windshield was not properly sealed during manufacturing and is now leaking when it rains. Water drips down the inside of the windshield in front of the driver resulting in distraction and poor visibility. I also fear that in an accident the windshield would not perform as it should and would be a safety issue. I brought it to the Volvo dealer and they just said I had to have it replaced but they do not provide that service. I brought it to a windshield service center and the technician was able to push on the windshield with only his hand and confirm that it was not sealed and showed movement. They also mentioned that have seen this issue many times with these cars. There were no warnings other than the leak which started a few months ago.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-13
- VIN: Yv4902dz1c2
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Lately my vehicle has been shutting off power when I hard right turn during parking everything shut off then I have to restart it again, but the scary part was what happened this morning I was driving on interstate and as I was charging lanes it almost powered off again but it picked up.
VISIBILITY PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-01-15
- VIN: YV4952DLXC2
- Components: VISIBILITY
- Summary: The windshield was not sealed properly during manufacturing because of a problem with the sealant used. This has caused a leak from the windshield on both the driver and passenger side from the top of the windshield when it rains. This creates lowered visibility when driving with water on the inside of the car, and also causes driving distractions while operating the vehicle. This improperly installed windshield also has caused malfunctions in electrical components in the windshield. There are no warning lights for this issue, but the windshield must be resealed by an auto glass technician.
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-05-05
- VIN: YV4902DZ1C2
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: Manufacturers original windshield began leaking. On inspection windshield is not properly bonded or adhered to vehicle body and is able to be pushed off the body of the vehicle with little pressure from the inside of the cabin. Windshield repair company advised me to look for a recall notice they were so concerned. Didn't find one, so I wanted to report a safety concern
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-03-01

- Summary: Original front windshield separating from frame of car. Leaking water during rain / melting snow. In cold weather forms ICE/FROST on INTERIOR posing visibility hazard! Autobody worker showed me how the windshield MOVED when he pushed on it with nothing more than his hand - warned me this is also a structural risk in case of crash. He stated he has personally seen hundreds of these on same model car for this year and the two following. Doesn't know why the company doesn't issue a recall!

- Summary: The rain water leaking through windshield. It could cause rust in the frame, then cause the failure of whole structure. I checked the Volvo forums, seems there are many Volvo owners have similar issues. I owned other cars, it’s the first time I had leaking water through perimeter of windshield.
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-05-07

STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-06-05

- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: My left front door failed to open using the outside handle. I have tried unsuccessfully to fix the problem by removing the inside door panel, the door window, and the surrounding hardware and electrical components. I contend that this is a safety hazard because a)a rescuer would fail to get the driver out of the vehicle in case of an accident and b)the door could open while driving because the latch contains a defective part. Other Volvo models have been recalled because of this problem, but my Vin number is currently not included in the recall. I contend that it should be recalled for my vehicle.

I bought a brand new XC60 3.2 eight months ago. While it's a nice car, I don't think it's worth the premium price. Unfortunately, my experience with the dealership was not great and my complaints to the head office went unanswered. This is my third car after owning a Toyota Venza and a Mercedes C300. I was disappointed with the dealership experience. As for safety, it's important to do your research and compare different models and brands. You can check insurance quotes and crash test results to make an informed decision. Lastly, the fuel economy could be better.

I recently traded in my '06 Acura TL for a 2012 XC60 T6AWD. I needed a vehicle that could carry cargo but still be compact enough to accommodate my tall and big body. While the Acura RDX was a finalist, I ultimately chose the Volvo XC60 because of its impressive performance and versatile interior. During my first 2000 mile road trip, I did encounter a few minor issues such as tight footwell space and some bugs in the new Sensus system, as well as a quirky navigation system. However, the XC60's impeccable road manners more than made up for these minor issues. It's a smooth performer with the T6, has superior cargo capacity for its size and segment, and handles well for a relatively tall CUV.

You've owned over 8 Volvos since 1982, and this one is by far the best! I had a great experience with their warranty service when I needed their help. Hudson Valley Volvo has an AAA rating, so I'll definitely be seeing them again when I return from Florida. I'm thinking of selling this one to them and leasing a 2016 Volvo of the same model.

Hey there! You can always count on me!

This car is not only the safest car on the road, but it also has a great design and offers a smooth ride.

I was looking for a change from the series of wagons I had been driving for the past 12 years. Saab, the maker of my previous two wagons, had gone out of business, so I turned to the other Swedish car manufacturer. The appearance of the XC60 piqued my interest, and during the test drive, I was immediately impressed by its performance. The car feels solid, both inside and out, and the warranty is impressive. As a bonus, I received a $1000 discount for remaining loyal to a Swedish brand. However, I have been experiencing discomfort in my back and leg every time I drive it, and for a few hours after. I suspect that it will be quite costly to trade it in for either a Volvo or Audi wagon.

My XC60 has been a great car since I bought it new in 2012. Despite having driven it for 40k miles, it has only required warranty work four times. Although it is currently at the dealer for the fourth time, I am confident that the issue will be resolved soon. The dealer has informed me that they will be rebuilding the entire engine, which will ensure that the car runs smoothly for many more years to come. While the car had been warning me that the engine oil was low, it turned out that the levels were fine. I am confident that the car will continue to drive great and provide the comfort that I need. I have no doubt that the car will remain reliable for many years to come, and I am glad that I made the decision to purchase it.

We've only had the car for two weeks and it's already got just over 1000 miles on it. We absolutely love it - the size is perfect for our family, and it handles great in the snow and ice. We're really impressed with its snowy weather driving performance. The build quality is fantastic, and we love the way it drives.
