Common 2016 Volvo Xc60 problems

Based on complaints from owners of the 2016 Volvo XC60, several common problems have been reported:

  1. Brake Issues:
    • One common problem affecting the first-generation XC60s is a leaking brake vacuum pump, leading to a slow loss of oil. This issue does not impact braking performance but results in oil loss.
    • New XC60 owners have also experienced various brake problems such as a soft brake pedal feel, squeaking or groaning brake noises, warped or prematurely needing replacement brake rotors, and the automatic braking system activating without reason.
    • Fixing a leaking vacuum pump is typically straightforward and can be done in less than an hour with basic tools. Many tutorials are available online for DIY repairs.
  2. Water Leaks Around Windscreen:
    • First-generation XC60s have been prone to water leaks from the windscreen and sunroof, particularly in models from 2009 to 2013.
    • The leaks are often due to faulty adhesives used to bond the windscreen to the vehicle frame, which weaken over time and fail to create a proper seal.
    • Water leaks can lead to interior damage, including carpet damage and potential harm to the car's electronics. Resolving this issue usually involves removing and properly resealing the windscreen.
  3. TPMS Issues (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System):
    • Many XC60 owners have reported problems with the TPMS, especially in newer models from 2015 onwards.
    • The switch to an ABS-based system by Volvo has made the TPMS more prone to false alarms, particularly with changes in temperature, elevation, and road conditions.
    • Proper calibration of the TPMS is crucial to avoid false alarms. If issues persist, a visit to a garage for a thorough diagnosis may be necessary.
  4. Oil Consumption:
    • Excessive oil consumption has been a common issue in first-generation XC60s, occurring at relatively low mileages, around 50,000 miles.
    • This problem is most prevalent in 6-cylinder and 4-cylinder engines, although 5-cylinder engines have also experienced similar issues.
    • Owners have reported the need for frequent oil top-ups, indicating potential engine issues that may require professional attention to resolve.

These problems highlight some of the key issues that owners of the 2016 Volvo XC60 have faced. Addressing these concerns promptly can help maintain the performance and longevity of the vehicle.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-29
  • VIN: YV4612RKXG2
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Purchased the vehicle sometime in 2021. Been dealing with oil consumption issues since then. Always maintained the vehicle per manufacturer recommendations. At first I had to top off the oil here and there and didn’t think much of it. Forward to Sept 2023 I have to add a quart every 500 miles. I began to research about the oil consumption problem and learned the following: There was a letter that was sent out to Volvo owners in Feb 2023 about a service bulletin regarding an oil consumption test and if the vehicle fails the oil consumption test then Volvo will replace piston rings or engine. They would also extend the warranty. The free oil test applies to vehicles within 8yrs or 100k. I never received the letter because I was the second owner. I called Volvo North America and they confirmed that the previous owner was listed on their end and that previous owner must’ve received the letter. If I had received the letter in Feb 2023 then I would be within that 8yr time frame and that would qualify me for repairs. I asked Volvo for grace to be included in the free oil consumption test. They said no because I was outside the time frame which was 3 months. Only 3 months! I never received the letter and I had to research on my own. I never received that letter and if I had received the letter then I would’ve taken it immediately to Volvo for the free oil test consumption. I believe this is a serious safety problem because at one point the engine will seize and could stall on the interstate due to the excessive oil consumption. Please look into this safety issue. A sudden seizure of engine leads to a sudden stall at interstate speeds which can cause a major collision and I know NHTSA is all about safety for operators of vehicles. Thank you!!

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-03
  • VIN: YV4612RM3G2
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: There was (still is) an issue with my 2016 Volvo XC60's electrical wiring. I was driving, about to get onto the highway when my volvo stalled on the on ramp. It wouldn't start, it couldn't be jumped. It had to be towed to the repair shop. They charged me over $1,000.00 for a brand new starter, and after they did it started for one day and then it broke down again. I couldn't even drive it out of the repair shop. I had to get it towed again. The dealership said it was an electrical/wiring issue that could be very expensive. I have found out that there was a recall for 2015 XC60 Volvos for wiring/electrical issues causing the vehicle to stall. However my 2016 volvo XC60 does not qualify per the repair show due to the date it was manufactured. I'm submitting this form for a safety issue because volvo clearly KNEW about this issue enough to need recalls for 2015s. There should also be recalls for this same wiring/electrical issue in 2016s.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-12
  • VIN: YV4612RK1G2
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: My vehicle sustained catastrophic, permanent engine failure while I was driving, in two-way city traffic. Cars backed up behind me, I had difficulty opening my door because of oncoming traffic, and eventually was able to push it (and get help pushing) to the intersection gas station. No warning lights appeared on my dashboard before, during or afterward. Independent service center reports no battery or alternator issue - engine is locked up. No idea why. The vehicle is out of warranty. I will have to pay to replace the engine myself, ~$7-8,000 in order to sell it at near KBB value. So disappointed in Volvo.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-20
  • VIN: YV440MDK7G2
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Volvo XC60 is burning oil and putting off a smell. Approximately every 500 miles I am prompted to put in another quart of oil. No signs of leaking. Took the car into a mechanic to inspect and was notified this is a known Volvo problem and I'd need to take it to a dealership since there are several TSBs on it with this known issue. Issue has been progressively been getting worse since I purchased the car a few years ago.

  • VIN: YV449MRM5G2

This was proven in a class action lawsuit against Volvo and they extended the warranty to 8 years or 100,000 miles however some cars are over the 100,000 miles and are still needing to add oil every 2-3 weeks. The low oil light started coming on about 80,000 miles. Had it in for repair but the dealership didn't know what was wrong with it.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-01-04
  • VIN: YV4612RK9G2
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: "The contact owns a 2016 Volvo XC60. The contact stated that while driving at 25 MPH, the oil warning light illuminated. The contact stated that she refilled the oil when she arrived at her residence. The contact noticed that the vehicle was consuming an excessive amount of oil and she was refilling the oil each 4-6 weeks. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, Bobby Rahal of the South Hills, who diagnosed that the piston rings needed to be replaced for more than $4,000 or the dealer stated that adding oil to the car every month would be a cheaper and not unsafe solution. On January 1 while driving on the highway, far from home, in the rain and fog with 3 children in the car, the engine started riding rough. The vehicle was driven cautiously home and taken to the independent mechanic specializing in Volvos who diagnosed that the engine had failed and needed to be replaced. The independent mechanic said he has seen 4-5 Volvos this year with the same problem, and that there is something wrong with the 2015 2/5 engine for this car, but prior to that year, it has been a good engine, and since that year, it has been a good engine. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was purchased, Bobby Rahal Volvo of the North Hills, and the diagnosis was the same for the 6 year old car needing a new engine for more than $16,000. Since the car was purchased in November 2020 for $18K+, the customer is wondering if the dealer that sold the car and the dealer that was asked about the oil issue knew the car engine was likely defective, did not tell the contact and put the contact's family in an unsafe situation. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and the contact is awaiting a response. The vehicle has not yet been repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 76,000, after less than 8,000 of vehicle ownership."

Positive 2016 Volvo Xc60 car reviews

  1. Florian Gibson 2025-01-09

We paid around 47K for the Platinum package and overall it's a pretty nice car. My wife is very happy with it as her driver. However, we have noticed that the car is quite rough on bumps compared to my 37K new Honda Pilot, which is a much smoother ride. The XC is peppy and really kicks it, but the joltiness of the ride is disappointing. The tech package is okay, but it lacks walk away locking and you have to pay extra monthly for remote start. Additionally, the driver/passenger heat/ac lacks synching, which has become fairly common. As of 12/20/17, we have had no problems with the vehicle, but we remain irritated with their stingy control over remote start. It's $499 if you want it added to the car. The MPG is not impressive at about 17 around town. The 2018 XC60 is tempting, but our next car will probably be an all-electric one. As of 12/20/2019, we became tired of the cramped feeling in the car. We did pay extra for the remote start, which was worth the money. However, at 30K miles, they wanted $500 to redo the back brakes and we had had enough. We lost 50% of the value. I tried to get my wife to switch to Honda, but she refused. We ended up purchasing the 2019 XC60, which is roomier and has some better features. However, the remote start add-on is not available anymore. After 4 years of free remote mobile phone start, you have to pay. This seems like a good scheme to sell you a new Volvo. I hope that by then my wife will be ready to leave Volvo.

    There is nothing to dislike.

  3. Ronaldo Leannon 2024-11-02

I recently upgraded my car after driving a 2010 Volvo XC-60 with 137,000 miles for a long time. I had been putting off buying a new or new-to-me car because I did not want a car payment after I paid off the 2010. However, I started looking for vehicles in the summer of 2018 and test drove 3 cars. Unfortunately, they were all dark blue and had more miles and more dings, scratches, etc. One had low miles, but a lot of dings on the passenger side of the vehicle. Still, I was determined to find a car over Thanksgiving break and two vehicles caught my eye. I went to look at one on Sunday and sent in an internet interest request. I got a call on Monday and scheduled an appointment for Wednesday at 1 p.m. However, by the time I got there, they had sold the vehicle at 11 a.m. or so. The internet contact let me know someone was taking the car for a test drive at 10 a.m. or so. That was a 2017 model with 21,000 miles. So, after that did not go well, I began re-searching and looking at my next choice, which was a low mileage 2016 model. I have had it for a week now and I am so happy with my upgrade!

We purchased our 2016 XC60 T5 Drive E used and certified with 41,000 miles. Currently, we have 71,000 miles on it and it has been a fantastic replacement for our 2002 BMW 325it wagon. The Volvo, especially our trim, has an exceptional amount of features for a car of its age. Our car is very well equipped with dynamic cruise control, which brakes and re-accelerates the car in traffic, making it a stress saver and safer since it near-guarantees you won't rear-end someone. Other niceties include an oversized opening sunroof, power-fold side mirrors, power tailgate, and navigation. Surprisingly, the interior lighting is tasteful yet functional, with tiny pinlights overhead illuminating cupholders and door pockets. The gauges are great, with variable display options, and the MPG is outstanding. I'm 52 and have driven plenty of fast cars, but now I'm a little more eco-conscious and take pride in saving gas. The ECO button really saves gas impressively, and the shift points are shortened so you get into a high gear asap. In a need-for-speed, you can flop the shifter into 'Sport' and get rocket acceleration. One more rarity, this vehicle has a spare tire, which is a huge plus. The interior storage up front is only okay, but the controls for volume, media, and heat/cold are brilliant. Overall, we highly recommend this car! They're these things called knobs and buttons and let me tell you, you want them. I'm really interested in electric cars, but the concept of VW ID4's silly sliding haptic controls, or even Volvo's screen stuff, is a distraction and possibly unsafe. The 2016 XC60 has such smart controls that you truly never need to take your eyes off the road once you're familiar with them. I love it! In 30k miles, we've only had to replace a battery and some sensor in the wiper fluid reservoir, and the lights under the power window buttons are burning out. Otherwise, it's been flawless. I love Volvos, but from what I've read here and elsewhere, I'd like my next car to be an XC90, yet it won't. It just sounds as if they've lost their reliability, and that's too bad. This car, with its incredibly comfortable seats, great infotainment, smart MPGs, and well, Swedish chicness, is a treasure. Update: Our XC60 now has 88,000 miles, and there have been no additional repairs since the last. It's really been exceptional. (For what it's worth, our 2019 Sienna Limited has had a few, but more costly problems). I will note that it's always been to the dealer for service, but there's been so little service that it hasn't been a challenge. We'll probably replace it soon with an EV (not likely to be a Volvo, sadly). I do want to add that as I try newer cars with touch-screen climate and audio, this evolution of control was exceptional. Knobs are the best. In split seconds, without even taking my eyes from the road, I can change radio stations, lower the fan, up the temp, speed up the wipers, turn on the seat heaters without ever looking at a screen. When we sell this car, I will miss that brilliance of design most.

This is a BIG SUV, but wow, it is great to drive! I'm still learning about all the devices and how they work. I might need a bigger garage for it! This review was for the XC90 T6.

Nov 4, 2022 ... The oil burning issue is common with early versions of this engine. I believe Volvo redesigned it in 2017. It's due to a piston ring issue.
