ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-01
  • VIN: YV4952DZXD2
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The component or system that failed is the driver side door controls for all four windows and both side mirrors. My safety is at risk as I am unable to adjust my mirrors manually or electronically in order to see. I am also unable to roll down any of the windows in the vehicle from the driver door in the event of an emergency. Yes, the problem has been confirmed by the Volvo service center. According to my local Volvo service center, this is a common problem in Volvos and they are very familiar with the repair needed to correct. The problem is that the driver door wiring is zip-tied together and over time, as the driver door opens and closes, the zip tie chafes the insulation off of the wiring causing the copper part of the wires to be exposed and twisted together. There are no warning lights reporting this issue, only that the window and mirror controls stop working. The following video link between 9:38-12:16 explains this issue in Volvos. I am writing to advocate for a vehicle recall. I believe this is a manufacturing flaw which could have been avoided by simply using electrical tape and not a zip tie. The repair has been quoted at $800. Driver side door entry is an essential function and should not be a cause for an electrical fire or drivers’ and passengers’ safety. FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-28
  • VIN: YV4902DZXD2
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The car came to a complete stop without a reason. This happened while exiting the freeway and no cars or objects were in front of me. I was very lucky that I did not have a car behind me or this would have caused a collision. After the car stopped the message "auto braking by City Safety" appeared on my dashboard

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-19
  • VIN: YV4902DZXD2
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The vehicle came to a stop in two different occasions (6 months apart) without a reason. The first occasion was while exiting the freeway, there was no car or object in front of me. The second time I had gone over a manhole and the car screeched to a halt on a city street. I was very fortunate that in both occasions I did not have a car behind me or this malfunction would have caused a collision. After the car stopped I was able to continue driving. After the car stopped the message "Auto braking by City Safety" appeared on the dashboard.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-03
  • VIN: YV4902DZXD2
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The windshield leaks. The seal is no good. I get wet every time it rains. No repair messages or warning lights were issued by the car. The repair service inspected the car, and they stated the factory glue was non-existent on the seal. Very poor.

VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-13
  • VIN: YV4902DZ8D2
  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: The windshield leaks when I am driving from the passenger side and the driver side. Last rain a lot of water got into the car which makes it very dangerous to drive and obviously to break since it gets slippery. I live in the mountains, and we get a lot of rain and now I have to pay out of pocket to get it diagnosed when even the service advisor said that that particular year and models leaks a lot.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-27
  • VIN: YV4952DL4D2
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I recently was forced to use the pry-off cap and manual key entry to get into my 2013 Volvo XC60. This was due to the vehicle’s lack of response to the fob, there was no communication between the fob and the electrical system. Once inside, inserting the fob, the engine started but the entire instrument cluster was flashing intermittently the various warning lights, and the windows could not be lowered. The cluster showed failure of speedometer, tachometer, brake system, seat belts and all other gauges on the cluster. Not knowing whether it was safe to drive, I turned it off. I returned later and turned it on, same problem. I went around the block, contacted the Volvo dealer for consultation, and secured an emergency appointment to bring it in. On the next day/the appointment, I drove the car in, during which the systems seemed to have reset themselves, but halfway there the problem started again. At this point the vehicle has been there (Howard Orloff Volvo, 1924 N. Paulina St, Chicago, 1.877.570.6927) since the 28th, they have not been able to give me a diagnosis, and the bill is over $600. How can this problem NOT be a safety risk for ordinary person such as myself? It is my understanding, from researching this, that this is a common and recurring problem so why has there NOT been a recall for what is obviously a defect inherent in this make and model car? Kindly respond with a reference number for this complaint. Thank you very much.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-11
  • VIN: YV4952DL0D2
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Water leakage from top of windsheild due to common failure of sealant (known to Volvo) falls directly into steering wheel airbag and, from there, flows into the seam between airbag module and the steering wheel and collecting behind the airbag subjecting the electrical connections of the airbag to moisture trapped behind the airbag. See photos. No warning lights yet. Vehicle is available for inspection by nhtsa.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-07
  • VIN: YV4952DL0D2
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: Several ounces of water leaking onto drivers hands on steering wheel from top of windshield when braking in adverse weather conditions is a severe and dangerous distraction to driving and braking. Condition first noticed in first heavy rain storm soon after using drive-through car wash, and persisted and worsened steadily thereafter. This condition is particularly dangerous as it occurs only when driver attempts to slow the vehicle at an intersection, and water in the roof flows forward into, and fills, the cavity that contains the top edge of the windshield with a large quantity of water which then flows onto the driver's hands and lap with no warning. Dealer is aware of defective windshield seals common to this year and model but will not assume repair beyond warranty period.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-02-14
  • VIN: YV4952DL0D2
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: Water leaking every time it rains. Running down the windshield on the inside and making it difficult to see and dangerous as I’m having to wipe while I’m driving.
2022-05-18

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-16
  • VIN: YV4902DZ9D2
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: While driving in the rain, water leaked in the through the top of the windshield, dripping on me and running down the inside of the windshield. This is a distraction for the driver to deal with the shock of getting wet while driving, as well as, and most importantly, a major visibility issue to have to deal with water on the inside of the windshield that impacts the driver's line of sight. I have read online that this model vehicle (and similar) has a known issue with the adhesive securing the windshield in place breaking down over time. If this is not corrected on my vehicle, the windshield could come loose and detach from the vehicle. It is *shocking* that there is not a recall in place for this model and similar vehicles impacted.

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-03-12
  • VIN: YV4940DZ6D2
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: The issue is with the windshields separating from the bonding agent ( not sealing ) it is cause for a safety issue not only because it is loose and can move when pushed up , but water is entering the vehicle through the top part of the windshield and entering the electrical controls for the lights and sun roof causing a potential short or shock hazard, not to mention ruining the interior of the vehicle ,( headliner, mold..etc..). I and many other's ( see link below) feel it is necessary to have Volvo make the replacement of windshields in their vehicles . https://beranek.agrrmag.com/2015/04/volvo-glass-bonding-issue/

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-12-27
  • VIN: YV4902DZ6D2
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: Yesterday ice-cold water was dripping onto my lap while I was driving (distracting), as well as obstructing my vision while it ran down the inside of the glass. In addition, water collected at the footwell made it soggy and being that it was 5 degrees overnight it was frozen solid making the break pedal almost non-functional.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-07-14
  • VIN: yv4902dz9d2
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The front seal on my windshield glass is not connected, the adhesive us either gone or not working anymore. You can push the glass up and see it move visibly when pushed. The leak is impacting my safety while driving. Yesterday ice cold water was dripping onto my lap while I was driving (distracting), as well as obstructing my vision while it ran down the inside of the glass. An independent glass company has inspected the windshield and duplicated the issues I have mentioned above. They mentioned that they have seen many of these faulty windshield seals and thought there might be a recall, but I have not been able to see one from Volvo.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-11-02
  • VIN: YV4902DZ9D2
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Summary: Vehicle suddenly and completely loses all electric power. i.e. no lights, including hazard lights or brake lights, no engine, no power steering. Status: The root issue has occurred twice, and the vehicle is pending service to positively diagnose and repair the issue. First occurrence: Driver parked the vehicle, turned off the engine, and remained inside with standard electric power active. Upon exiting the vehicle and closing the driver’s door, the door lock button did not respond. Returning to the vehicle it became apparent the reason for the lock failure was the absence of electric power. During the process of preparing to connect jumper cables, electric power returned. This was without actually connecting to a jump source. Second occurrence, 1 day after first: While driving at 60 MPH on a highway, electric power suddenly ceased. Driver unable to activate hazard lights or any other warning to other vehicles. Driver was able to steer to roadside and come to a stop. At suggestion of mechanic shop, driver opened battery compartment and tapped the cables connected to the battery terminal, and power returned. Mechanic suggested hairline fracture of metal connectors of positive cable connecting to vehicle power. Now awaiting mechanic diagnosis and repair. Fortunately the failure did not result in a collision, but does present a clear safety hazard upon its occurrence. The mechanic’s suggestion leads to the suspicion this is a known issue with the vehicle component.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-10-23
  • VIN: YV4902DZ2D2
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The gas gauge no longer reports accurate level of fuel in tank. Thousands of people have reported this issue, yet no recall exists, though this endangers lives - especially in the deserts of the southwest. Volvo service quotes are aways ripoffs, quoting $3000 minimum.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-09-18
  • VIN: YV4902DZ7D2
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: Water is leaking down the inside of the windshield while driving in rain. It comes from the top edge and streaks down the drivers side (left side). I spoke with a mechanic that services my vehicle and was told if it was a sunroof drain issue it would be coming down the pillars and getting on the floor. They were confident that it was the windshield that was leaking and referred me to a local auto glass business for repair. I read on a car forum about other Volvo car owners having the exact same problem with their Volvos that are around the same age as mine. It seems to be a glass adhesion failure that consistently occurs on the top edge of the Volvo OEM windshields. The forum is located at https://beranek.agrrmag.com/2015/04/volvo-glass-bonding-issue/ I also contacted Volvo about what I had found and having it covered by them, and they asked me to first get it inspected by a Volvo dealer before they would decide whether or not they'd pay for the repair. I spoke with someone in the service department of my nearest Volvo dealer and they wanted to charge me $300 just to inspect it. The date of the incident I'm giving below is the date that I first experienced the water running down the inside of the windshield while driving. Thankfully I had something within reach to wipe it with as I was doing 60 MPH on the interstate highway.

AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-12-01
  • VIN: YV4952DL9D2
  • Components: AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: The problem started 2 years ago and has progressively become worse. The original windshield is leaking water, which drains down inside the A-pillar and windshield. Water also leaks into the air-bag in the A-pillar, and moisture may come in contact with the electronic parts in the dashboard, creating a safety issue and a potential fire hazard. Last year I contacted Tucson Volvo for help, and they referred me to JD Auto Glass (520-370-6599). The local dealer refused to take any responsibility for this safety defect. There have been heavy rains recently in Tucson, and water is dripping onto my lap while I am driving, and trying to wipe the dashboard dry. This causes a major distraction and obstructs my vision, since the water continuously runs down the inside of the windshield glass. Yesterday I contacted Tucson Volvo again, and they referred me to Tony's AutoGlass (520-889-2422). The Owner/Manager of Tony's AutoGlass informed me that leaking windshields are a very common problem with Volvos. I believe this is a very serious safety defect, and am seeking help from your office. Thank You!

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-07-19
  • VIN: yv4940dlxd2
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2013 Volvo XC60. The contact stated that while his wife was driving 5 MPH, the vehicle shut-off without warning. The contact stated that the electrical features ceased to operate in the vehicle. The contact stated that his wife was unable to activate the hazard lights. The contact's wife was unable to exit the vehicle as her driver’s side door would not unlock. His wife was forced to flag down a construction worker who pulled the door open from the outside. As soon the door opened, the lights began to work, and all the electrical features returned. The contact's wife was able to restart the vehicle and drive home. The contact left a message with a service advisor at a dealer to notify them of the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic but was not yet diagnosed nor repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000.

  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: Noticed rain entering car from front windshield on the driver's side. Car was taken to an auto glass company thinking it was a seal. The technician showed me that there was no seal on the top of the windshield. He informed me that if I pushed the top of the windshield up I could confirm the seal was broken. He suggested I take it to the dealer ship because this was not a new issue. When I took it to the dealership the female auto adviser said she had not heard of such a problem. I contacted Volvo and was informed I needed to take it to the dealership for them to diagnose but did not indicate whether or not they would correct the damage.

  • Remedy: These vehicles have not been sold and the SRS control unit will be replaced prior to the cars being sold. Owners may contact Volvo at 1-800-458-1552.

Negative 2013 Volvo Xc60 car reviews

  1. Camron Casper 2024-10-14

We bought it a little more than two years ago, at 90,000 miles. It has 110,000 miles now. It is comfortable and nice to drive on road trips. However, it is a money siphon. We replaced the AC condenser when we bought it. Since then we have replaced cabin blower, and recently replaced AC condenser again. Looking at possibly having to replace the AC evaporator as well. Get random low battery warnings, even though the battery is new and the electrical systems check out OK. We will soon have spent more on repairs than the value of the car.

  2. Sage Barton 2024-10-13

Hi there! It seems like you've been experiencing some issues. Let's work together to find a solution!

  3. Clint Barton 2024-09-15

I have had a disappointing experience with my second XC-60, despite having learned from my previous experience. Despite being less than 2 months old, I have had to take it to the shop 5 times already. While not as serious as my previous car, it has still been time-consuming for me. Unfortunately, I have not received any compensation from Volvo for the time and gas I have spent going to the shop repeatedly. Even my complaints to corporate Volvo have not yielded any results, as they simply repeat the misinformation spread by the service department. It is frustrating to have to take a car in for the same problem multiple times. Regrettably, I have decided not to purchase another Volvo. It is a shame, as it was a beautiful and enjoyable car to drive. I only wish that the persistent problems could have been resolved.

  4. Javonte Reynolds 2024-04-01

I was looking for a change from the series of wagons I had been driving for the past 12 years. Saab, the maker of my previous two wagons, had gone out of business, so I turned to the other Swedish car manufacturer. The appearance of the XC60 piqued my interest, and during the test drive, I was immediately impressed by its performance. The car feels solid, both inside and out, and the warranty is impressive. As a bonus, I received a $1000 discount for remaining loyal to a Swedish brand. However, I have been experiencing discomfort in my back and leg every time I drive it, and for a few hours after. I suspect that it will be quite costly to trade it in for either a Volvo or Audi wagon.

I recently purchased a 2013 Volvo XC60 3.0L V6 Turbo and while I love the speed of the car, I have had a few issues with it. Despite having to take it to the dealer a few times, the alignment issue was resolved and the BLIS package has saved me a few times. The car's parking sensors have also been a great help. However, I have had some trouble with the audio system and the rotors, which have had to be replaced twice already. Additionally, the car's AWD system is not the best, with its 60(front)/40(back) split. The car is also quite rough to ride in, so it may not be the best option for those with back issues. Overall, I still appreciate the car's stability at high speeds and its cheetah-like acceleration. The LED headlights with the active bending feature have also been helpful when driving at night through passes. As someone who lives in an area with a lot of snow and ice, I was hoping for a more reliable AWD vehicle, but the Volvo XC60 has its pros and cons.I usually get around 17-18 mpg in the city and 19-20 mpg on the highway, but I do tend to have a heavy foot. While I can handle most of the car's issues, the frequent need to replace the rotors is a major frustration for me. If I had known about this beforehand, I probably would not have purchased this car. The cost and time required for rotor replacement is simply too much. Last time, it took the dealership 5 days to replace them. Unless you enjoy dealing with back pain and have money to spare, I would recommend looking into a V6 Subaru Outback instead!

Car has 147,000+ miles and I've had it for six and a half years. The mileage is great - about 27 mpg over the last 7400 mostly highway miles. I use 91 octane and synthetic oil for better mpg. It's a very safe and (mostly) comfortable car, even though the leather seats are now 12 years old. It performs well in both wet and dry conditions. Keeping up with maintenance is key, but overall it's the best of 6 Volvos I've had by far.

Today marks 8 days since we got our new car and we couldn't be happier! The fastgrips make it feel like it's on rails and it's both safe and easy to drive. Despite feeling big, it's actually quite manageable. Our 5-year-old daughter is a big fan of the car, especially the panorama sun roof which gives her a great view. The auto climate is also a breeze to use. To answer the question of whether I have buyer's remorse, the answer is a resounding no. I would definitely buy this car again. In fact, I traded in my 4-year-old M3 for this one and it drives even better and feels stronger.

I had a great experience purchasing my Volvo XC60 through Volvo's OSD (Overseas Delivery) option. I was able to customize the car to my liking, including a color and interior options that were not available in the US. Volvo even flew my husband and me to Gothenburg, Sweden to pick up the car at the factory and gave us a thorough lesson on how everything works. The handling on the narrow and winding roads through the Norwegian Fjords was awesome, and the car's safety equipment, such as blis, worked terrifically. The car is comfortable for both the driver and passengers, although the road noise could be quieter. Regular maintenance is key, and we have had no major repairs yet. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with my XC60.We recently returned from Europe where we acquired our second OSD, the all-new XC40. It's a fantastic car! As a Volvo enthusiast, I highly recommend the XC60. It has served me very well over the years and I would choose it again and again!

Going from a hybrid sedan to a crossover was an interesting change but I've grown to enjoy my XC60. The vehicle feels very solid, safe, and with a stance like a tiger, grips the road with amazing tenacity!

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience trading my 2012 S60 T6 (with Polestar Mod) for a 2013 XC60 R-Design. I was drawn to a beautiful Cosmic White XC-60 on the showroom floor and thought that the S60 and XC60 would have similar comfort and driving experiences since they share many components, especially the interior. However, I was disappointed to find that the XC60's 'special R-Design sport seats' weren't as comfortable as I had hoped. It's surprising that Volvo, a company known for its superb seat comfort, didn't get it right with these seats. If you're considering a Volvo R-Design, I recommend spending some time in the sport seats to make sure they're comfortable for you. Personally, I miss my S60's perfect fit and superb comfort. Thanks for listening!
