Common 2017 Volvo Xc60 problems

Based on complaints from owners of the 2017 Volvo XC60, several common problems have been reported:

  1. Loss of Power Steering:
Owners have experienced issues with the power steering system, including whining noises, difficulty turning, and sudden loss of power assist. Problems often stem from issues between the steering rack and the power-steering high-pressure line, leading to fluid leaks and steering difficulties.
  2. Engine Performance Issues:
Many drivers have reported stalling, hesitation, or rough idling problems with the XC60, affecting the vehicle's drivability. The 2010 model year has been highlighted as particularly problematic for engine issues, with higher repair costs associated with these problems.
  3. Tailgate Problems:
Some owners have faced issues with the tailgate, such as broken tailgate motors resulting in lifting arm failure, stiff or non-moving tailgates. These problems can be highly inconvenient for SUV owners and have led to concerns about the reliability of the tailgate mechanism.
  4. Loose Windscreen Wipers:
Volvo recalled some cars due to loosely installed windscreen wiper arms, which could potentially detach from the vehicle, impacting visibility. This issue highlights a safety concern related to the proper installation of essential components like windscreen wipers.
  5. Fuel Leaks:
In the 2010 model, a recall was issued due to incorrectly installed fuel rail line covers, leaving the fuel line exposed to damage. Fuel leaks pose a significant safety risk and require immediate attention to prevent potential hazards associated with fuel system malfunctions.
  6. Infotainment Gremlins:
Owners of the 2022 model have reported issues with the electrical and infotainment systems, including instances of the screen going blank, leading to system shutdowns that require a restart. Problems with the Google operating system controlling various functions have also been noted, impacting the overall user experience.

These common problems reported by owners of the 2017 Volvo XC60 highlight various issues ranging from safety concerns like power steering failures and fuel leaks to convenience-related problems with the tailgate and infotainment system. Addressing these issues promptly is crucial to ensure the safety, reliability, and performance of the vehicle.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-15
  • VIN: YV440MRU8H2
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The support battery for start/stop started to show on the dash and tells me that service is required about 2 weeks ago. "THE LOCATION OF THE BATTERY IS MY CONCERN". A month ago, the air coming out from the vent of the ac/heater started to smell like a rotten egg, a very strong smell that gives me a headache and makes me dizzy. This smell comes and go.I had to open the windows and switch to recycled air, this helps a little bit. I brought my Volvo to 2 shops about 3 weeks ago before I went to the dealer on Feb 16, 2024. The first shop smelled it and said they checked the catalytic converter and run a diagnostics and emission and they said emission is very good and there is no problem with the catalytic converter and suggested to bring it to the dealer. They said it could be coming from the battery and I told them that the battery is new and main battery has a box casing so the strong smell is definitely not coming from the main battery. I didn't know that there was another battery. I brought it to an exhaust shop and said the same thing, no leaks in the pipe and catalytic converter and smoke coming from the exhaust looks normal and smells normal. Next I brought it to the dealer and they did nothing and simply stated they could not duplicate the problem. I had no choice but to do an extensive research to find out where the location of the support battery so I can change it myself. I always wondered why the smell is so strong in the passenger side intake screen cover of the cowling. I couldn't believe where Volvo had placed the second battery/support battery. It was on the passenger side, right next to the air intake for the AC/heat of the car and is covered by the cowling between the windshield and the engine. Harmful gases that can potentially come out from the battery is directly suck in to the intake of the car's air conditioner.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-01
  • VIN: YV449MRR9H2
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS
  • Summary: SRS Airbag light came on three times in a month but did not stay on. Took it to Volvo dealership to see what the issue was. According to dealership- there was loose pin tension in the left front door harness. They checked for codes and received SRS B11A081 left side pressure sensor message failures. Followed VIDa fault tracing and found the loose tension in SRS pins in the driver door harness. They had to replace the SRS terminal pins and splice wiring. The dealership did mention that this has happened with 3 or 4 different Volvo models already this year. It sounds like it's a defect in the manufacturing of the SRS system within the doors. However, Volvo warranty will not cover this repair. My primary concern was that the airbag was deactivated this entire time, even when the light was off. Again, the warning only came on for three trips in an entire month. I had assumed it was a software glitch, since when my software needs updating electrical things start to happen (i.e. spacial sensors going off when nothing is around me and I'm parked).

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-23
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: YV440MDR0H2
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: I pulled my car out of the garage, I saw I had not taken the trash out and had my foot on brake. the car has an automatic shut off at stops to save gas. It shut off, I jumped out thinking it was "off" as there was no engine sound. The car started back up and started going forward. I attempted to jump in to hit the brakes ... it kept going and hit side mirror, door, me and then kept going! it never stopped! crushed me half in half out of door. my friend jumped in stopped it from passenger side and then started it up to back it up and remove me. I was taken to trauma with fractured pelvis, broken lumbar, cracked ribs and a concussion and stitches! this is supposed to be one of thee safest cars. my family owns 3! the sensors did not stop the car! period! called volvo and they blew me off after several drawn out forms. Said the car will not stop in reverse. I was going forward! I paid for the black box to be downloaded and it shows NO collision recorded but I need two new doors its so bad! it has been since first week of feb that I have been rehabilitating and several of my doctors have asked why this was not a case with a lawyer? so far most do not want to fight volvo I guess. I need help with this. I have proof it did not stop or even show collision from sensors. Thank you Kimberly Bradshaw

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-30
  • VIN: YV440MDU6H2
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Got into my car, pulled out of a parking spot and approached a stop sign. The brakes suddenly became extremely mushy and the brake peddle went all the way to the floor. I didn't notice an issue when I pulled out of the parking spot. I was unable to continue driving as the brakes were not usable. I had the car towed to the dealer and they indicated the brake booster and vacuum pump failed due to "normal wear and tear". The vehicle was purchased at, and always maintained at our local Volvo dealer. Luckily no accident occurred.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-06-07
  • VIN: YV440MRUXH2
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I will followup once I have a report from a mechanic. My car stalled while driving in heavy traffic; a pedestrian ran in front of me and I braked. I didn't hit anything or anyone, not even a pothole. My car stalled and all the dashlights went off. I put the car in park and tried to restart, but it would not start. My emergency lights wouldn't work and because I was on a busy thoroughfare in DC, my daughter and I were nearly rear ended by a bus. Even after we got out of the car, we watched other cars nearly hit it because it couldn't be pulled over and the emergency flashers wouldn't turn on. The mechanic said that the battery was fine. I had a regularly serviced oil change 2k miles ago, and everything was fine. The mechanic will replace the starter since the car will no longer start, but said that a bad starter would not cause the car to just die in heavy traffic. I called Volvo to report the issue, but they said they wouldn't take safety reports unless it was towed to a Volvo dealer. Of course, my car stalled out far away from a Volvo dealer, and roadside assistance only tows to the nearest mechanic.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-10-01
  • VIN: YV449MRU5H2
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The fuel pump regulator failed causing the fuel pump to fail way to early (car has less than 60K miles). In addition, the floats in the fuel tank itself stick making the fuel gauge unreliable. We have had to replace the fuel pump regulator, fuel pump and also have an unreliable gas gauge now unfortunately. The car failed while we were driving through the canyon in southern CA which was terrifying and very dangerous. We are fortunate we were able to steer off the road and get out of the way.

  • VIN: YV440MRR9H2
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: THE VEHICLE DOES NOT REPORT THE FUEL LEVEL ACCURATELY. OVER THE PAST 6 MONTHS THE VEHICLE HAS RUN OUT OF GAS 3 TIMES, ALL WHEN THERE WERE TWO BARS OF FUEL ON THE GAUGE, AND THE REMAINING MILEAGE HAS BEEN BETWEEN 80-90 MILES. THERE CLEARLY SEEMS TO BE A PROBLEM. THE SECOND TIME THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A VOLVO DEALER AND THEY SAID THE VEHICLE WAS WORKING FINE. I'LL TAKE IT BACK AGAIN AND MAYBE THEY WILL FIX IT THIS TIME. THE LAST TIME IT RAN OUT WAS YESTERDAY ON AN OFF-RAMP OF AN INTERSTATE HIGHWAY AT 10:00 PM. IT WAS DARK BECAUSE THERE WERE NO STREET LIGHTS AND THERE WAS NO SHOULDER TO PULL THE CAR ONTO. THERE WERE NUMEROUS CLOSE CALL WITH VEHICLE NOT SEEING THE STOPPED VEHICLE UNTIL THE LAST SECOND. MY TWO KIDS AND I WERE LEFT STRANDED IN A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-01-02
  • VIN: YV440MRU3H2
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: TWO TIMES NOW, DRIVING THROUGH THE SAME ONE-WAY INTERSECTION, THE CITY SAFETY AUTO-BRAKING FUNCTION ACTIVATED FOR NO REASON. I WAS GOING STRAIGHT THROUGH THE INTERSECTION, WITH NO NEED TO TURN LEFT OR RIGHT. HOWEVER, THE CITY SAFETY AUTO-BRAKED TO A COMPLETE STOP, PLACING ME AT RISK FROM BEING HIT FROM BEHIND. AN ERROR MESSAGE APPEARED IN MY INFORMATION CENTER CONFIRMING THE CITY SAFETY AUTO-BRAKING FUNCTION WAS ACTIVATED. I BROUGHT TO A VOLVO DEALER AND THEY DID NOT SEE ANY ERROR MESSAGES. I ASKED TO DISABLE THIS FUNCTION, BUT THEY WEREN'T ABLE TO AND STATED I WOULD HAVE TO MANUALLY DO THIS EVERY TIME I GOT IN THE VEHICLE, WHICH IS A 5-STEP PROCESS. ATTACHED IS A MAP OF THE AREA WHERE THIS OCCURRED. I BELIEVE IT WAS THE E 11TH ST AND CEDAR INTERSECTION (MARKED AS #1), AS THE INTERSECTION DOES LOOK MORE COMPLICATED AND VEERS TO THE RIGHT (CLOSE-UP ALSO INCLUDED). THE OTHER TWO ARE ALSO POSSIBILITIES FOR WHERE THE AUTO-BRAKING COULD'VE OCCURRED. HOWEVER, IT HAPPENED VERY FAST AND MY BEST RECOLLECTION IN THE INTERSECTION OF 11TH AND CEDAR, TRAVELING EAST.

Negative 2017 Volvo Xc60 car reviews

  1. Jaeden Keebler 2025-03-24

I've always dreamed of owning a Volvo, but unfortunately couldn't afford the 90. I test drove it anyway and ended up buying the 60, even though I prefer cars with more features. Living in the mountains at over 7000 feet, I need a car with power that can handle the switchbacks and snow. Although the difference between the 60 and 90 is significant, I'm still happy with my purchase. As an empty nester, I mainly use it to get from point A to B. The eco feature isn't great, as the restart is quite loud and there's a delay on start up, even with the turbo. However, turning off eco causes the car to surge. It's important to gauge your distance, as the car moves a few inches more before coming to a complete stop. I've also noticed black soot in the tail pipes after driving less than 1000 miles. The interior is excellent and luxurious, except for the issue with the passenger door not unlocking when the button on the driver's side door is pushed. Despite these minor issues, I received a great deal for my trade in and the rebates and discounts were unbelievable. The customer service was impeccable. I'm still not sure if I bought a lemon or if I just need to work out the kinks. - A driver from New Mexico

  2. Zion Hilpert 2025-02-14

This mid-size SUV has a lot going for it, including all-wheel-drive, a powerful four-cylinder engine, and great fuel efficiency. The cabin is also quite comfortable, making for a pleasant ride. However, it is worth noting that the drive can be a bit noisy and the suspension is on the harder side. Additionally, the display screen for navigation and system control is on the smaller side and not as user-friendly as some of its competitors. Despite these drawbacks, this SUV is still a great option for those looking for a reliable and efficient vehicle.

  3. Lee Collins 2025-01-15

The XC60 has covered 48,100 miles and has all the service records intact. Unfortunately, the engine has stopped working and the Volvo dealer has quoted a price of $17k for a new engine, which is more than the book value of the car. We asked Volvo USA to review our case and help us out, but they denied our request within a day. It is disappointing that their product failed us despite taking good care of the car and having the service records to prove it. We were hoping for some degree of concern from the manufacturer, but unfortunately, we were left 100% on the hook. While we understand that these things can happen, it is still frustrating. We believe that Volvo could have handled the situation better. We would like to suggest that if you are looking for a reliable car, you may want to consider a Tesla instead of a Volvo. Thank you for your time.

  4. Keaton Will 2024-10-21

The SUV initially seemed nice, but after driving it for a few weeks, we realized how uncomfortable it is. The seats and backseat room are terrible and feel like they were designed for a very small person. If you can't cross your legs comfortably, it's a deal-breaker. The front seat is also poorly designed and uncomfortable. The leather is too hard and the seats are too narrow for normal people. Volvo has been around for a long time and their seats used to be the most comfortable for short and long distances. We find it amusing that we have to keep adjusting the settings to enjoy the ride. During the test drive, the SUV felt nice, but after an hour-long drive, we felt exhausted by the seats.

  5. Charles Mraz 2024-07-07

This upscale SUV's performance and ride quality did not meet my expectations.

Positive 2017 Volvo Xc60 car reviews

  1. Camron Leffler 2025-03-15

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my new XC60. Safety, comfort, durability/fuel economy, and carrying capacity (cargo, dogs etc.) were my top priorities when choosing a vehicle. This is actually our 4th Volvo since 1990, and we've always been happy with them. The last one we had lasted over 220K miles with little more than routine maintenance, but it was starting to show its age. Luckily, there were some great price incentives in July that encouraged me to buy new. I ultimately chose the XC60 over another 70 series because of its stylish design and extra ground clearance. Cargo capacity wasn't as big of a priority for us anymore. The XC60 is incredibly comfortable, with supportive front seats and plenty of leg, shoulder, and head room for my above average male body size. The drive-e engine delivers surprisingly good fuel economy for a car this heavy, and the acceleration is more than adequate for my needs. The leather seats are beautiful, although I do miss the cloth upholstery that held up so well in my old V70 for 12 years. One thing I do miss is the fold-flat front passenger seat in the V70, which allowed me to carry long items such as lumber. However, I wouldn't want to do that in a car this nice! The infotainment system is great, with more choices than I really need. It's a little more complicated than I would have preferred, but I'm sure it will keep me entertained and informed for years to come. The

  2. Gay Predovic 2025-03-12

This SUV is definitely worth considering as an alternative to other SUVs. It has great technology and exceptional seats, although the ride can be a bit stiff. However, on the freeway, it's much better and the gas mileage is impressive. I'm currently in a 3-year lease and I think I'm going to keep it. Although I came from a S40 with a stiff suspension, this SUV is only slightly worse. It's very comfortable and I received a great deal. My only gripe is that I wish the inscription had the dynamic seats, but I didn't want all the shiny bits. The wood inlay is much nicer, though, so I'll live with it.

  3. Domenico Senger 2025-02-08

I absolutely love this car! I previously had a 2011 XC70 T6 which I adored, but I have to say, after transitioning to this one, I love it just as much within the first month. It's a little faster (same engine but 1 second faster off the line) and has less roll, even though it's taller. I really enjoy the way it drives, feels and handles. It's not perfect, but there's really nothing to complain about. The interior tech is fantastic, especially with the Platinum package. You could go for the R-Design Platinum, but it's essentially the same car with a few bells and whistles. The Navigation could be a bit more intuitive, but that's all done and over with as of the 2018 model. This is simply all about the 'up to 2017' models. I would say, if you're considering this kind of car, there's absolutely no reason not to own one. It's a fun toy to have and it will do the job very, very well!

  4. Ed Haley 2024-11-23

You have a great car! It's comfortable and has great visibility. The acceleration is not bad, but I can understand why you might wish you had the R for an extra 25 HP. The straight 6 (which is unfortunately no longer offered) is really smooth and strong, and sounds great. The blind spot is a real plus. The navigation system can be a bit tricky to use, but with some practice, I'm sure you'll get the hang of it.

  5. Billy Champlin 2024-10-03

This is a BIG SUV, but wow, it is great to drive! I'm still learning about all the devices and how they work. I might need a bigger garage for it! This review was for the XC90 T6.
