2009 Volvo V70 problems
The Volvo V70 is an executive car manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars from 1996 to 2016 across three generations. The name V70 combines the letter V, standing for versatility, and 70, denoting relative platform size (i.e., a V70 is larger than a V40, but smaller than a V90).
The first generation (1996–2000) debuted in November 1996. It was based on the P80 platform and was available with front and all-wheel drive (AWD), the latter marketed as the V70 AWD. In September 1997, a crossover version called the V70 XC or V70 Cross Country was introduced. The sedan model was called Volvo S70.
The second generation (2000–2007) debuted in spring 2000. It was based on the P2 platform and, as with its predecessor, was also offered as an all-wheel drive variant marketed as the V70 AWD and as a crossover version initially called V70 XC. For the 2003 model year, the crossover was renamed to XC70. The sedan model was called Volvo S60.
The third generation (2007–2016) debuted in February 2007. It was based on the P3 platform and marketed as the V70 and the XC70. Production of the V70 ended on 25 April 2016, the XC70 continued until 13 May 2016. The sedan model was called Volvo S80.

Common 2009 Volvo V70 problems
The common problems reported by owners of the 2009 Volvo V70 are as follows:
- Power Steering Issues: Certain V70s built between 27 May 2010 and 17 April 2015 have been associated with power steering problems that could result in a coolant leak during the warm-up process, posing a risk of engine fire under extreme circumstances. Owners are advised to check with a Volvo dealer to ensure their vehicle is not affected by this issue.
- Coolant Leak: The coolant leak in some V70 models built between 27 May 2010 and 17 April 2015 can be a serious concern, potentially leading to engine fires in extreme situations. It is crucial for owners to have their vehicles inspected by a Volvo dealer to rule out any coolant leak issues.
- Parking Brake Release: For V70s built between 24 February 2011 and 2 February 2015 with manual gearboxes and start/stop technology, there have been instances where the parking brake releases without warning. This issue can be addressed by having the necessary software updates applied by a Volvo dealer to prevent unexpected brake releases.
- Fuel Gauge Showing Incorrect Level: Vehicles constructed between 24 April 2014 and 11 December 2015 have been reported to have issues with the fuel gauge displaying incorrect levels. Owners are advised to keep their fuel level above a third of a tank until a software update is available to correct this problem.
- Engine Fire Risk: Volvo has initiated a recall for around 70,000 cars in the UK equipped with a 2.0-litre diesel engine due to potential engine fire risks. Owners are advised to be vigilant for unusual smells, engine warning lights, or engine hesitation, as there is currently no fix available for this issue.
These problems highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any potential issues to ensure the safety and reliability of the 2009 Volvo V70.
Is the 2009 Volvo V70 a good car?
The 2009 Volvo V70 has a smooth and refined ride befitting its premium status. Don't expect to have any fun, however, as the V70's light steering and ample body roll put the kibosh on any handling hijinks. Nevertheless, the V70 is markedly smaller than most crossover SUVs, so it feels more maneuverable in tight spots.
What is the common problem with Volvo V70?
The top engine mount is known for failing on the V70. When you are taking off, or changing gear you may hear a loud knocking noise. Another symptom of the top engine mount failing is when you open the bonnet, have someone rev the engine for you and if it shakes excessively then this is the cause.
What is the best year of Volvo V70 to buy?
Going back to the 2000-2007 era still makes sense. This V70 still looks great and can have kiddie- friendly rear seats in the boot, but mostly it's a proper load-lugger, with its posh carpeted cargo bay. Note that it got something of a revamp in 2004.
What is the life expectancy of a Volvo V70?
That being said, Volvo Cars is among the top brands when it comes to longevity. Among the factors mentioned above, regular maintenance and driving style can make a huge difference. Overall, expect to see your Volvo vehicle last for over 200,000 miles if you give it proper care each year.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-11-29
- VIN: YV1BW982691
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,SEATS
- Summary: SRS WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED AT APPROXIMATELY 70,000 MILES, 4.5 YEARS AFTER PURCHASING VOLVO DIRECTLY FROM THE FACTORY IN SWEDEN. THE LIGHT REMAINED ON FOR A FEW DAYS, THEN TURNED OFF. THIS OCCURRED REGULARLY FOR 4 MONTHS UNTIL THE LIGHT REMAINED ON INDEFINITELY. WHEN I FINALLY TOOK THE VEHICLE IN FOR SERVICING, THE ERROR CODE INDICATED A FAULTY OCCUPANT WEIGHT SENSOR (OWS) EMBEDDED IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. THE PASSENGER AIR BAG WILL NO LONGER DEPLOY IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT BECAUSE THE SENSOR WILL NO LONGER IDENTIFY A PASSENGER IN THE CAR. IT IS UNCLEAR WHETHER THIS ALSO DISABLES THE DRIVER (PRIMARY) AIR BAG, AS WELL AS THE SIDE AIR BAGS. I CONTACTED VOLVO USA SHORTLY AFTER THE 5 YEAR MANUFACTURER WARRANTY EXPIRED AND THEY EMPHATICALLY CLAIMED THAT THIS EGREGIOUS SAFETY ISSUE WAS NO LONGER THEIR CONCERN. RESPECTFULLY, PLEASE NOTE THAT DUE TO THIS FAULTY OWS THE CAR IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO OPERATE AND THAT VOLVO SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR FIXING THIS ERROR. *JS
VISIBILITY,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-12-24
- VIN: YV1BW982091
- Components: VISIBILITY,STRUCTURE
- Summary: I HAVE A WINDSHIELD PROBLEM: THE SEAL THAT SECURES THE WINDSHIELD TO THE ROOF OF THE CAR HAS FAILED ALONG THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF THE TOP OF THE WINDSHIELD. THIS WAS FOUND DURING TROUBLESHOOTING A LEAK PROBLEM -- WATER WAS ENTERING THE CAR WHEN IT RAINED, LEAKING FROM THE REAR-VIEW MIRROR AND THE LIGHT ABOVE IT (NOTE - MY V70 WAGON DOES *NOT* HAVE A SUNROOF). UPON INSPECTION BY AN AUTO GLASS TECHNICIAN, THE WINDSHIELD EASILY LIFTED AWAY FROM THE CAR WHEN IT WAS PUSHED FROM INSIDE THE CABIN. THE TECHNICIAN TOLD ME THAT THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY PROBLEM. WITHOUT A PROPER SEAL ON THE WINDSHIELD, THE ENTIRE STRUCTURAL DESIGN SAFETY OF THE CAR IS COMPROMISED. IF THE CAR WAS IN AN ACCIDENT, ESPECIALLY A FRONT-END COLLISION, THE WINDSHIELD WOULD NOT ABSORB ANY OF THE IMPACT AS IT WAS DESIGNED TO, RESULTING IN GREATER DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE AND MAKING IT UNSAFE. I WAS ADVISED NOT TO OPERATE THE VEHICLE UNTIL IT WAS REPAIRED. I LOOKED AT SOME ONLINE VOLVO FORUMS AND NOTED THAT OTHER VOLVO OWNERS HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM. THE TECHNICIAN ALSO STATED THAT HE HAS NOTICED THIS PROBLEM ON OTHER VOLVO VEHICLES, AND WAS REPLACING ABOUT 2 OR 3 A MONTH. HE BELIEVES IT IS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT AND THAT VOLVO SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM. *TR
TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-02-19
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: CPSC# I1320468A. 2009 VOLVO V70. CONSUMER IS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING DEVICE. *LN THE CONSUMER STATED THE TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE CONSUMER STATED HE ADDED AIR TO THE SUSPECTED TIRE AND THEN CONTINUED WITH HIS DRIVE. WHEN THE CONSUMER RETURNED TO HIS VEHICLE, HE NOTICED THE MESSAGE READ TIRES NEED TO BE FILLED NOW. THE CONSUMER EXITED THE VEHICLE AND DISCOVERED THE PASSENGER REAR TIRE WAS FLAT. HE THEN NOTICED THE STEM HAD CRACKED APPROXIMATELY 1/4 INCH FROM THE END OF THE STEM ALLOWING THE INTERNAL STEM MECHANISM TO SLIDE PARTIALLY OUT, THUS RELEASING TIRE PRESSURE AT A GOOD RATE. THE FAILED TIRE STEM CORRODED IN APPEARANCE (AS THE OTHER THREE WERE). UPON CLOSE EXAMINATION, WITH A MAGNIFYING GLASS, THE TIRE STEM WAS NEARLY CORRODED THROUGH THE WALL THICKNESS OF THE TIRE STEM AND DID NOT EXHIBIT MUCH IF ANY BRITTLE FAILURE APPEARANCE ANY INDICATION OF DISTORTION OR BENDING.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-05-16
- VIN: YV1BW982991
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 VOLVO V70. WHILE DRIVING, SHE NOTICED THAT THE STEERING WHEEL WAS EXTREMELY WARM. WHEN SHE DROVE THREE HOURS AWAY FROM HER HOME, SHE NOTICED THAT THE STEERING WHEEL WAS HOT ALTHOUGH SHE HAD THE AIR CONDITIONER ON. THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY NOTIFIED THE MANUFACTURER, LOOKED ONLINE, SEARCHED FOR A RECALL AND COULD NOT FIND ONE. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THE PROBLEM MAY HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY THE LIGHT BULB LOCATED INSIDE THE STEERING WHEEL. NO REPAIRS WERE MADE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 3,000. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100.

I see that you previously owned a 2008 V70 and now you have another one. That's great! The V70 is a luxurious sports wagon with excellent build quality. It's also very quiet and has great mileage, getting 22 MPG in town and 30 MPG on the highway. This is comparable to my 2009 Accord. I love how it has a premium feel and can carry just about anything. It's a great alternative to an SUV.
-
This is not your average station wagon. While it may not handle like a sports sedan, it still gets the job done. You'll definitely appreciate the comfort and convenience that the V70 provides. Although I haven't seen proof yet, I hope that it's a safe option too.
-
Love it! You guys are the best when it comes to wagons.

I recently picked up my car in Gothenburg, Sweden and drove 1800 miles through Europe. I found it to be very easy to handle, with a beautiful interior and typical great seats. The dash, switches, gauges, etc. were all well laid out. I think the evolutionary update to the design of my S60 is fantastic. If you're considering the European delivery program, I highly recommend it. Even with the current value of the US dollar vs the Euro and SEK, it's well worth it.

As expected, this car is super strong. I have a personal story about the safety of Volvos. My wife was in a serious accident where a driver ran a red light and hit her old 2006 v70 wagon. The car was destroyed, but my wife emerged with only minor injuries. We knew we had to get another Volvo, so we bought the new v70 which is even bigger, stronger, and safer. I don't think any more comments are needed. - Rc mckaughlin

While the car has been reliable and comfortable to ride, it has become quite expensive to maintain as it has aged.
