Volvo S80 2008 problems
The Volvo S80 is an executive car produced by the Swedish manufacturer Volvo Cars from 1998 to 2016 across two generations. It took the place of the rear-wheel-drive S90 as Volvo's flagship sedan.
The first generation (1998–2006) was made available for the 1999 model year. It has since been built at the Torslanda Works in Gothenburg, Sweden, with a few 1999 model year cars for the North American market built at Volvo's Halifax Assembly plant. Unlike most Volvo models, it did not have a station wagon version for its first generation.
The second generation (2006–2016) was released in 2006 as a model year 2007 car. It has an estate version, the third generation of the Volvo V70. In June 2007, the S80 scored the highest "good" rating in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash test performance for frontal, side, and rear impacts, earning it the IIHS Top Safety Pick.
The model was replaced by the second generation S90 in the later half of 2016.

Common Volvo S80 2008 problems
The 2008 Volvo S80 has been reported to have various common problems, primarily related to the engine, body paint, and wheels/hubs.
- Rear End Accessory Drive Unit Went Out: This issue is the most frequently reported problem, with an average cost to fix being unknown and an average mileage of 89,000 miles. This problem can cause significant inconvenience and potential safety hazards, as the rear end accessory drive unit is essential for the proper functioning of the car's powertrain.
- Motor Mount Bushings: This issue is the second most reported problem, with an average cost to fix being unknown and an average mileage of 208,000 miles. The motor mount bushings are responsible for securing the engine to the vehicle's frame and absorbing vibrations. If they fail, it can lead to excessive noise, vibration, and potentially dangerous driving conditions.
- Hood Release Latch Would Not Release On Driver Side: This issue is the third most reported problem, with an average cost to fix being $0 and an average mileage of 209,000 miles. This problem can be inconvenient and potentially dangerous, as it can prevent the driver from accessing the engine compartment in case of emergencies or routine maintenance.
- Potential Engine Fire: This issue affects cars with a 2.0-litre diesel engine, with approximately 70,000 cars in the UK being recalled. The problem is related to the engine's design, which can lead to potential engine fires. Volvo is currently seeking a software update to correct the issue, and in the meantime, owners are advised to pay attention to any unusual smells, engine warning lights, or hesitation during acceleration.
- Fuel Gauge: This issue affects cars constructed between 24 November 2014 and 17 April 2015. The fuel gauge may show the wrong level, and a software update is being sought to correct the problem. In the meantime, owners are advised to keep the fuel level above a third of a tank to avoid running out of fuel.
- Power Steering: The auxiliary drive belt tensioner on some S80s made between 1 January 2007 and 31 December 2010 can fail, leading to a loss of power steering. This problem can be solved by replacing the tensioner.
- Coolant Leak: Some S80s built between 28 May 2010 and 5 May 2015 may have a coolant leak during the warm-up process, which could result in an engine fire in extreme circumstances. Checking with a Volvo dealer is recommended to ensure that the car is not affected by this issue.
- Fuel Hose: The fuel hose used in some S80s has been found to crack from the inside, which could lead to a fuel leak. This issue applies to cars built between 11 April 2015 and 30 March 2016, and a Volvo dealer can determine whether the car is affected.
- Premature Light Bulb Wear: This issue is one of the most commonly reported problems with the S80, with no real fix available. However, more long-lasting light bulbs can be used to address the issue.
- Transmission Failures: Particularly in earlier models, transmission issues have been reported, leading to erratic shifting and, in extreme cases, transmission failures. This issue can be costly and time-consuming to repair, and it is recommended to avoid earlier models with known transmission issues.

- Consequence: THE ALUMINUM BRACKET FOR THE ENGINE MOUNT COULD BREAK DUE TO LACK OF ADEQUATE CLAMPING FORCE. THIS COULD CAUSE THE ENGINE TO COME IN CONTACT WITH THE SUB-FRAME, ULTIMATELY RESULTING IN A REDUCED ENGINE TORQUE OR STALLING OF THE ENGINE WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE ENGINE MOUNT BOLTS FOR SPECIFIC MARKINGS. IF ANY OF THE BOLTS CONTAIN THE INCORRECT MARKINGS, THE BRACKET AND BOLTS WILL BE REPLACED. ALL OWNERS HAVE BEEN CONTACTED AND ARRANGEMENTS HAVE BEEN MADE TO REPAIR THESE VEHICLES.

I am thoroughly impressed with this car. It is the most comfortable vehicle I have ever driven, surpassing even my previous cars, the Passat and Murano. The interior is elegantly simplistic, the exterior is eye-catching, and the construction is solid. However, the fuel consumption, averaging at 20 mpg, is relatively high for a V6 engine.

I'm so glad to hear that you enjoyed driving the S80! It has a great style and is very comfortable to drive. The interior is quiet and the sound system is good. While the engine could use a little more power, it is still very economical on gas. If you have the chance, I would recommend test driving the 8 cyl or turbo models to see if they better suit your needs. Overall, I think the S80 is a great choice, especially with its AWD system.

I was checking out the usual German, British, and Japanese luxury brands, and just as I was about to purchase a Lexus, I decided to visit a Volvo dealer. The S80 T6 caught my eye with its understated luxury, solid build, strong engine, comfortable ride, nice stereo, and reasonable price. It's definitely a great value.

I recently purchased the 2008 3.2 S80 and have been driving it for 48 hours. I must say, I really like the look of both the interior and exterior of the car. However, I did notice that the handling falls a bit short. Compared to other cars I have driven in Europe, such as Audi's, Passats, and Lancias, this car has a floaty feel to it. During a recent trip from Germany to Italy through the mountains at night, I learned a lot about the vehicle. Overall, I think it's a nice car, but the suspension could use some work. If you're looking for an extra kick, a turbo is necessary. Additionally, I believe that certain features, such as Bluetooth and front and rear warning detection for parking, should come standard with the car.

This updates comments from 2 years ago, as the lease nears expiration. After 30K miles, the suspension creaks and pops just as my 2000 model. Unfortunately, replacement parts by the dealer never fixed the problem, but I still enjoy driving it. Gas mileage has improved to 21mpg mixed and 27mpg on the highway. However, my '04 Jag XJ8 is even better with 22mpg in the city and 30mpg on the highway, and it's much more fun to drive. Although there have been some small problems, the engine and transmission have been great. Maintenance can be relatively expensive, but it's included on 2009-10 leases. Overall, I think it's a nice car, but at over $40K in this class, I wouldn't lease another one and wouldn't want to purchase it for the long term.

My S80 is a well-built car, but after owning it for a couple of weeks, I'm disappointed in how rough the ride is. I called the dealership to see if they had shocks that aren't as stiff, but they told me that none are available. Their recommendation was to decrease the tire pressure, which didn't seem like much of a solution to me. Next time, I'll make sure to test drive a car on different routes.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the S80 that I leased at the end of September. I've noticed that the tires make quite a loud noise when driving at moderate and high speeds, and the wind noise at 50+ mph is also quite loud. I've been back to the dealer twice now, and while they replaced 3 defective tires, the noise and vibration is still there. Interestingly, my owner's manual had tire info for 2 other brands, but I guess Continentals are cheaper for Volvo. I'm a bit disappointed by the poor ride from a supposedly good company, especially since my VW Passat rode much nicer. I drive the same highways to work each day, so the noise is quite upsetting. I'm going to try to escalate the issue to see if I can get the tires I should have had. I was told that the wind noise is normal, but I'm not convinced. Thanks for listening!
