1999 Volvo S70 problems
The Volvo S70 is a compact executive car produced by Volvo Cars from 1996 to 2000. The S70 was essentially a facelifted 850 saloon. The S70 was replaced with the Volvo S60.
Overview
Introduced in Europe in late 1996 for the 1997 model year and later in the U.S. for the 1998 model year, the Volvo S70 was an updated version of the Volvo 850 saloon. The S70's body style was overall more rounded compared to its predecessor. Changes included a redesigned front end with new lights, fully colour-coded bumpers and side trim, and clear indicator lenses for the rear lights, as well as a redesigned interior. According to Volvo, a total of 1800 changes were made.
Standard equipment was improved with remote central locking, heated & electrically adjustable mirrors, 4 airbags, power brakes with ABS and power windows being standard on every car. Trim levels varied for each market as did the equipment levels of the most basic trims. In the United States, the badging denoted the engine variant and to some extent the equipment level, whereas in Europe engine and options could be chosen individually. On all markets more powerful versions usually received better or upgraded standard equipment. The T5 and R were the series high-performance models.
For the 1999 model year, a minor facelift was introduced. Apart from very minor cosmetic changes, such as a slightly different Volvo badge on the front grille and US models now being equipped with side markers on the front fenders, most changes were done to the mechanicals. Volvo introduced its second generation side airbag which increased in volume to offer better protection. WHIPS, Volvo's system to minimize whiplash injuries, was also introduced as part of the standard equipment. New engine management systems with drive-by-wire replaced the mechanical throttle on all turbo engines as well as bringing with them an upgraded traction control. Now including throttle as well as brake intervention it was renamed STC. The ABS was upgraded from a three-channel to a four-channel system, all-wheel drive models received thicker rear discs and redesigned rear calipers. All automatic transmissions were now equipped with adaptive shift-logic, replacing the previous 3-mode selection. A starter interlock was added to models with manual transmissions.
For the 2000 model year, a new 5-speed automatic transmission with adaptive shift-logic was introduced. It was only available on non turbo front-wheel drive models. The 10V engine variants were dropped and replaced by detuned 20V versions, drive-by-wire throttle was now also introduced for non turbo models.

Common 1999 Volvo S70 problems
Based on the information gathered from various sources, here are some common problems with the Volvo S70 1999 model as reported by owners:
- Immobilizer System Issues:
- As the car ages, the immobilizer system may fail to read the key correctly, preventing the car from starting.
- Ignition Coil Failure:
- In 1999, Volvo started using individual ignition coils that have a higher failure rate. While these coils are easy to replace, they can still be a common issue to watch out for.
- Transmission Problems:
- Some early 5-speed automatic transmissions, especially on non-turbo models, had initial issues that could be addressed with software updates. It is crucial to ensure these updates are done to prevent potential damage.
- Cylinder Headwear or Cracking:
- The use of sulfurous fuel can lead to cylinder headwear or cracking, which is a common issue in used Volvo S70 models. Regular oil changes are essential to prevent this problem .
- Expensive Maintenance Costs:
- The 1999 Volvo S70 can be expensive to maintain, especially due to the ETM issues and potential parts availability concerns. However, some owners have found it cheaper to maintain their Volvo compared to other vehicles.
These common problems highlight the importance of thorough inspection and maintenance when considering a used Volvo S70 1999 model. Regular servicing, addressing known issues promptly, and being aware of potential costly repairs can help owners keep their Volvo S70 in good condition and avoid unexpected expenses.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-09-12
- Crash: 1
- VIN: YV1LS55AXX2
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A 45MPH COLLISION ON 9/12/2017. FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE WAS IMPACTED. THE COLLISION WAS SEVERE ENOUGH TO CAUSE THE FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG TO BLOW. HOWEVER, THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE AIRBAG DID NOT BLOW UP, DESPITE THE IMPACT HAPPENING ON THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE. A COMPLAINT WAS SUBMITTED TO VOLVO ON 9/19/2017. A CALL FROM (201) 768-7300 WAS RECEIVED TODAY 9/20. I FORGOT TO NOTE DOWN HER NAME BUT SHE WAS A VOLVO REPRESENTATIVE. SHE CORRECTLY STATED THAT THERE WAS NO OCCUPANT WEIGHT SENSOR IN THE PASSENGER SIDE AND THEREFORE THEY CANNOT DISCRIMINATE WHEN A CRASH IS SEVERE. HOWEVER, SHE STATED THAT BECAUSE I HAD MY SEAT BELT ON, THE SYSTEM DETECTED THAT I WAS SAFE AND THEREFORE DID NOT BLOW UP THE DRIVER AIRBAG. THIS EXPLANATION SEEMED VERY BIZARRE TO ME AS I BELIEVE IF THE CRASH WAS SEVERE ENOUGH TO BLOW UP THE PASSENGER AIRBAG, THE DRIVER AIRBAG SHOULD BLOW UP TOO, ESPECIALLY SINCE THE IMPACT WAS ON THE DRIVER SIDE. I WAS REPEATEDLY TOLD THAT THE SYSTEM WAS COMPLICATED AND THEREFORE WOULD NOT UNDERSTAND. I FOUND THIS EXPLANATION TO BE UNACCEPTABLE.

- Summary: TWICE, WITHIN 50 METRES OF THE SAME SPOT EACH TIME, MY CAR HAS SUFFERED EXTREME ACCELERATION WHILST I WAS BRAKING AS HARD AS I COULD. FIRST TIME, MY MECHANIC CHECKED ALL COMPUTER DIAGNOSTICS USING TWO DIFFERENT COMPUTER TESTING DEVICES BUT THERE WERE NO FAULT CODES. NOW, AS WELL AS HAPPENING TWICE WITHIN 50 METRES OF THE SAME SPOT, I WAS AT THE SAME SET OF TRAFFIC LIGHTS, WHICH I DO NOT SUSPECT AS BEING THE PROBLEM, BUT ALSO NEXT TO A MAJOR HOSPITAL WITH AN ADJACENT HELIPAD. MY BEST GUESS AFTER 57 YEARS IN ELECTRONICS AND 40+ IN COMPUTERS IS THAT SOME SORT OF RF INTERFERENCE IS UPSETTING MY VEHICLE. I KNOW VOLVO CHECK ALL ACCIDENTS INVOLVING THEIR CARS IN SWEDEN AND WONDER WHETHER THEY HAVE EVER COME ACROSS MY PROBLEM. BOTH TIMES THE ENGINE SCREAMED ITS HEAD OFF ALTHOUGH I HAD NO TIME TO WORRY ABOUT THE TACHOMETER READING. THE NOISE ITSELF WAS ADEQUATE WARNING AND THE LACK OF BRAKING MEANT THAT I HAD TO KILL THE IGNITION TO RECOVER MINE AND THE VEHICLES COMPOSURE. SWITCHING ON THE IGNITION AGAIN BOTH TIMES, THE VEHICLE ONCE AGAIN IDLED NORMALLY AND OPERATED AS IT SHOULD. *TR

THE CONSUMER WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE, BUT OFTEN IT WOULD GO NO MORE THAN 20-30 MPH. ALSO, SOME OF THE LIGHTS ON THE DASH WOULD COME ON AND GO OFF. THE CONSUMER HAS TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AT LEAST SIXTEEN TIMES.THEY SAY THEY CAN'T DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM, SO THEY CAN'T FIX IT. I AM GOING TO GET REAR-ENDED AND SOMEONE IS GOING TO BE KILLED. MAYBE SEVERAL "SOMEONE'S". VOLVO OF HOUSTON DOESN'T CARE. WE BOUGHT THE CAR THERE. IT HAS HAD MAINTENANCE SERVICE THERE OVER THE YEARS. THESE PEOPLE TOOK OUR $27,000 AND GAVE US A "KILLER" CAR. I AM TERRIFIED WHEN I HAVE TO DRIVE IT. SINCE 2005, EVERY TIME I GET IN THIS CAR I WONDER IF I WILL GET HOME ALIVE. I WOULD LIKE FOR SOMEONE AT VOLVO TO TAKE THIS CAR AND LET THEIR WIFE, MOTHER, OR DAUGHTER DRIVE IT. LET THEM WORRY ABOUT GETTING KILLED ON A HOUSTON STREET. THIS CAR HAS DONE THIS AT LEAST 20 TIMES, MAYBE MORE. I NEVER KNOW IF I WILL GET WHERE I AM GOING OUT AND I DEFINITELY DON'T KNOW IF I WILL GET HOME A L I V E! THIS CAR IS GOING TO GET SOMEONE KILLED. THIS CAR IS GOING TO GET SOMEONE KILLED. DID I MENTION THAT THIS CAR IS GONG TO GET SOMEONE KILLED?? I WOULD LIKE TO GIVE THIS CAR TO A PRESIDENT OR VICE-PRESIDENT AT VOLVO SO THEY COULD LET THEIR LOVED ONES DRIVE AND WORRY A BOUT "SOMEONE GETTING KILLED". I HAVE DEALT WITH VOLVO SINCE 2005. THEY DON'T CARE. MAKING MONEY BY SELLING CARS IS ALL THAT IS IMPORTANT TO THEM. EVEN IF THE DRIVER GETS KILLED BECAUSE THEY DON'T KNOW HOW TO FIX THE PROBLEM THAT IS GOING TO CAUSE THE DEATH. I ASKED THE [XXX], AT VOLVO OF HOUSTON TODAY IF HE WOULD LIKE TO LET HIS WIFE, MOTHER, OR DAUGHTER DRIVE THIS CAR. HE JUST LOOKED AT ME AND SAID NOTHING. It has a euro-feel that makes driving enjoyable. It's incredibly responsive. The only downside is that it may be too small for a family of four.

I've owned this car for five years and I've been very happy with it. The car is heavy, but the handling is excellent. Although the torque is somewhat underpowered without the turbo, it's still a super car built like a tank.

My wife and I bought this car used with 79,000 miles on it and we were initially thrilled with it! The ride was far superior to other sedans we had driven, and even the standard 5 cyl. had good pickup and could really go at high speeds. We also loved the look and design of the car. However, we did encounter some maintenance issues along the way. Despite the service manual being beautifully stamped by cert. volvo and having only one previous owner, we had to replace the window switch ($200) and a vacuum component ($200) within the first week of owning it. We kept up with the maintenance, which averaged around $400 per visit, but still had to replace 2 oxygen sensors ($500) and the a/c evap. ($1000). Ultimately, we decided to sell the vehicle in 2006. Despite the reliability issues, it was a great drive and we enjoyed it while it lasted!

My wife and I chose this car for its excellent safety ratings, and it has not disappointed us. While we have experienced some issues with the electronic system, which seems to be quite sensitive, we have found that these are common among other owners as well. Recently, I had to take it to the dealership because the check engine light was on, but it turned out to be a simple fix - the gas cap was not fully tightened. Additionally, I had to replace the cup holder and rear view mirror, but this was due to normal wear and tear. Overall, we are very happy with our purchase and would recommend it to others.

I've only owned this vehicle for a month, so I can't comment on its reliability yet. However, as someone who spends five days a week on the road and drives approximately 2000 miles a month, I feel confident in assessing its other qualities. Performance-wise, the spunky little 2.4 5L has plenty of pep and handles corners cleanly. Ergonomically, there are some areas where Volvo could be more intuitive, such as with better front cupholders. On the plus side, this car is the simplest vehicle there is when it comes to changing a brake or tail light. As for build quality, I got exactly what I hoped for: a solid, safe, and fun-to-drive car!

I have owned this vehicle for 3.5 years. Initially, I experienced some problems that were not taken care of to my satisfaction the first time. There was some sort of silent recall for an ignition sensor problem, which required 2 weeks in the shop for parts. The suspension problem had to get worse before the experts figured it out. Additionally, there was a misalignment wear maintenance item, and the bulbs burn out far too quickly. I was told that this is not an engineering problem, but rather that bright lights for safety are the cause. Lastly, the steering wheel paint runs under the hot Midwest sun. It was replaced once, but now it is happening again without warranty.

I bought the car in 01 mainly due to the safety factor, especially after experiencing 3 accidents in just 18 months. At first, I loved the car and still kind of do. However, it rides hard and can be expensive to maintain. Additionally, changing the oil is a hassle since only the dealership can reset the computer. Otherwise, the oil light will come on and glare at you. The oil change costs nearly $70 and there's nothing special about it. Repairs at the dealership are also expensive. I recommend going to an independent mechanic for most things, as they offer better pricing. While I like the car, I don't think I'll buy another one. There's no compelling reason to do so, especially with other brands ranking higher in safety and other factors that I bought a Volvo for.

The car looks great and runs great, when it runs. In the four months I've owned it, it has unfortunately been back to the dealership 5 times. Although everything that needed to be fixed was minor, the fact that it needed to be fixed at all was unacceptable. It's important to note that when they say Volvo certified, it's best to be cautious.

I purchased this car with the intention of using it for its fuel efficiency. At the time of purchase, it was almost a decade old and had just over 100,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, I have experienced a few issues with the car such as a broken antenna, door hinge, and power locks that only work on the right rear door. While the build quality is decent, the materials used are not of the highest quality. Additionally, the dash is quite squeaky and there are a lot of rattles. However, I do appreciate the car's safety ratings and fuel economy. Overall, I would rate this car a 2.5 out of 5 stars. As for purchasing another Volvo, I may consider a new one.

Compared to my 2000 Mustang GT, which required only 10% of the maintenance and repair costs, this supposedly superior European quality car was a disappointment. Although the basic engine and body structure were sturdy, the sensors, switches, A/C, brake discs, engine mounts, CV boots, etc. required frequent repairs. Additionally, the vinyl on the drivers' seat and center armrest started to peel off around 100,000 miles. Despite being garage-kept and well-maintained, this car did not live up to the hype. While it does drive nicely and has a reassuring clink when the doors shut, I doubt I will purchase another Volvo.
