2018 Chevrolet Colorado problems
The Chevrolet Colorado (sharing mechanical commonality with the GMC Canyon), is a series of compact pickup trucks (mid-size since second generation) marketed by American automaker General Motors. They were introduced in 2004 to replace the Chevrolet S-10 and GMC S-15/Sonoma compact pickups. The Colorado is named after the U.S. state of Colorado, while the Canyon would be the deep chasm between cliffs.
First generation (2004)
The Chevrolet Colorado and its twin, the GMC Canyon were jointly designed by GM's North American operations, GM's Brazil operations, and Isuzu, which began selling its own version worldwide in 2002. In late 2005, Isuzu offered a version in North America called the Isuzu i-series. This North American model Isuzu shared North American powertrains, styling, and equipment with the Colorado/Canyon twins and differed from Isuzu's worldwide offering. All Chevrolet, GMC, and Isuzu versions worldwide are based on the GMT355, itself the basis for the GMT 345-based Hummer H3. Most vehicles for markets outside North America are manufactured at a GM plant in Rayong, Thailand. All North American-market vehicles were manufactured by Shreveport Operations.
The cooperation between GM and Isuzu to build a light-duty truck and offer it in North America returns to an original arrangement the two companies had in the 1970s with the Chevrolet LUV, a rebadged Isuzu Faster.

Common 2018 Chevrolet Colorado problems
The 2018 Chevrolet Colorado is known for its intense shudder and vibration issues, which can occur shortly after purchase.
In addition to the transmission problems, the 2018 Colorado has also been criticized for its lack of power steering control. This issue, which is more pronounced in the 2015 model, can lead to the service power steering or StabiliTrak warning lights coming on before drivers lose their power steering control entirely.
Another common issue with the 2018 Colorado is a faulty fuel level sensor, which can result in erratic and inaccurate readings on the fuel gauge. This problem can be particularly concerning for drivers, as it can make it difficult to accurately gauge how much fuel is left in the tank.
Despite these issues, the 2018 Chevrolet Colorado is still a popular choice for many drivers due to its decent performance and towing capacity. However, potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and weigh them against the vehicle's other strengths before making a decision.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-01
- VIN: 1GCGTDEN3J1
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: shutter or vibration issue regardless of speed even when cruise control is active. took it to the dealer and they said the wrong fluid was installed at the manufacturer. also told me my extended warranty would not cover it since it was not a mechanical issue. i saw that GM has issued a service bulletin 18-NA-355. however, i have yet to discover from any online account that this fixed the problem. why is there no recall for this common issue.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-29
- VIN: 1GCHSBEA5J1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Key cannot be removed front ignition. Put in park but does not release key . Unlocks doors but does not lock steering wheel or release key . Have to do several tricks to get key loose . No one in repair community seems to be able to fix or understand how to repair.
TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-08
- VIN: 1GCGTCEN6J1
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: At approximately 6:15am while driving at approx 45MPH on a surface street on the right lane, I noticed an alert on the dashboard regarding the PSI of the rear driver side tire had 0 PSI of pressure and simultaneously heard the thudding sounds of a flat tire. I neither heard, nor felt any impact and there were no potholes in that section of road. I pulled over and called for roadside assistance to replace the tire with my spare. I noticed a large tear from the tread nearly all the way down to the bead along the wall of the tire. Tire M+S 255/65 R17 110T. When the tech arrived he noted the tire was new (purchase and installed 42 days earlier). I asked if he's seen this before as I hadn't, and he said he'd only seen it when a driver hit a curb, which I had not. In the early evening I took the tire back to the shop where it was purchased and before even looking at the tire they informed me I "must have hit something" and will just need to purchase a replacement. After they inspected the tire at my insistence, they concluded I must've hit something but I believe it was a case of confirmation bias. I pointed out, and they did not refute, that there was no other damage to the tire, no damage to the rim, and no damage to the vehicle. The subject tire is still in my possession and available for inspection.
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-27
- VIN: 1GCGSCEN5J1
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: The vehicle stuttered upon acceleration between 20mph and 35mph. After the 2018 Chevy Colorado was taken into the Chevy dealership for inspection, the torque converter failed at roughly 76,000 miles. A bad torque converter can potentially cause an accident. It can lead to engine revving issues, sudden speed changes, which can be dangerous while driving. The torque converter failed and left metal shavings in the transmission causing the transmission to need replaced as well. This was diagnosed by the Chevy dealership and has a repair ticket of over thirteen thousand dollars. ( $13,000.00 ) which most people can't afford to absorb. After a quick Google search, this appears to be a common problem. There should be a recall to fix this issue.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-01
- VIN: 1GCPTDE1XJ1
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? It appears to be a piston failure, as there is compression and diesel in the crankcase. Engine is still in the vehicle but once removed it will be available for inspection if needed. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Power loss on a busy highway requiring lane changes without available engine power is dangerous. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Not yet Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? P0266 code and engine light set immediately after the failure. But there were no warnings prior
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-01-07
- VIN: 1GCGSCEN4J1
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: We have been complaining to the dealerships (2) since 2021 about a spontaneous outage of the Infotainment system. Each time we were told there was no problem. They claimed to have contacted GM, who said 'no problem' or so we were told. The 'problem' has become a serious safety issue for myself. It starts with a loud constant ‘ticking’ sound that begins after getting seated, even before the key is placed in the ignition and does not stop. The radio rolls a list of station numbers even when nothing is on making it very distracting. Listening to the radio has become impossible. This system malfunction has created a more serious problem for me. At my height, the view of the speedometer reading on the dashboard is blocked by the steering wheel making me dependent on the mph display directly in front of the steering wheel, and is part of the Infotainment system, which keeps going off and I have no way to watch or judge my speed safely. It also interferes when using gps and causes a loss of direction. This is just downright dangerous. As obvious as the problem is, the current dealership requires a $190 diagnostic fee with repair costs to follow. This system was not an option or add-on. We could not break it or wear it out. Now out of warranty GM refuses any responsibility. Why no recall? Many complaints stated on social media.
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-04
- VIN: 1GCGSCEN1J1
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: At the beginning of November I was out shopping, when I returned to my vehicle, the driver side door would not open. Luckily I was fit enough to crawl through from the passenger side. I promptly called the Chevy dealership for an inspection/ repair. I feel this was an emergency situation. I didn’t even want to think about what would happen if I were in a vehicle accident, and couldn’t get out, or, no one could get in. I was able to get an appointment at the dealership for November 16, 2023. My Chevy is always parked in covered garage, there was no warning sign of anything going wrong. They checked it at my appointment, but because they couldn’t open it, they decided to order all the assembly parts, which I had to pay for ahead of time. My next appointment for the repair wasn’t set till January 31, 2024. I never knew how important a functional door would be. Very inconvenient, and dangerous.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-29
- VIN: 1GCGSCENXJ1
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The check engine light came on because the coolant fan runs for a while after vehicle is shut off. This ended up being due to a thermostat failure. I did have this repaired in Novemver 2023 but what is interesting is that one of my sisters, who also owns a Chevy Captiva had this same thing repaired earlier in 2023 and now my other sister who owns a Chevy Equinox has this same issue now, 2/5/24, and will look into having it repaired. Is this just a coincidence or is this a defective problem that the manufacturers should address?

- Components: STEERING
- Summary: The power steering on our 2018 Chevy Colorado fails intermittently during driving.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-24
- VIN: 1GCHTCENXJ1
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The key will not come out of the ignition when the vehicle is in park. This presents a safety issue where the driver cannot leave the vehicle because the key is stuck in the ignition. The problem has been reproduced by the dealer and found to be a faulty transmission control assembly. The faulty transmission control assembly has now been replaced twice on my vehicle, once at 19,000 miles and again at 33,000 miles. There were not any warnings or messages, just one day the key won't come out of the ignition.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-06
- VIN: 1GCGSCEN1J1
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The beginning of November my driver side door would not open. There was no warning, and nothing happened to cause this. I took it to the dealership. For $161.00 they told me I would need $980.00 worth for parts, which I had to pay upfront, so they would order them. Needless to say there is only one mechanic that is able to do this repair, so I’m still waiting. My appointment is on January 31. I feel this has been a big hazard, do to no fault of my own. I’m just Grateful that [XXX] I can climb through to still use the truck. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-24
- VIN: 1GCGSCEN8J1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Truck bought in United States for use in US. All dash displays ( child or person in back seat or passenger seat, and gauges, emergency or vital messages, warnings etc) are in a foreign language. I only speak and read english. In addition, may go into mode where it changes channel and volume every few seconds which is distracting. Chevrolet dealer (Valmark) says they want 100-200 usd to diagnose and 2000.00 to replace. Reset did not fix. Vehicles for US should be in common language. Chevy should diagnose and repair free of charge. Screen is locked/frozen and cannot be accessed. Spoke with Ian at chevy hdqtrs who said diagnose fee is up to dealer, i will have to pay. Chevy forums say common problem and chevy won’t repair.
SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-03
- VIN: 1GCGTDEN7J1
- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: The driver side seat belt does not immediately latch when placed in the seat belt housing. To secure the seat belt the driver must keep placing the seat belt latch into the housing multiple times in order for the latch to secure. When brought to the attention of a local Chevrolet Service Center, their response was to pay >$400 to replace the seat belt housing (near the seat). The service center is Lamb Chevrolet in Prescott, Arizona.
STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-04
- VIN: 1GCPTEE19J1
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: He wiring harness to the 4wd kept coming on which wouldn’t allow me to ingage. Mountain Chevy citified mechanic found a chafing on the wiring harness. After filing it my truck started to light up like a Christmas tree, Stability service, trailer brake service, Locker service, Power streering service and they done turn off. Which is caused by more chafing wires that are to close to components of the engine bay getting to hot. Now my power steering turns off and when driving the truck it kicks on and make me loose control of the vehicle. Big diffect on Chevys manufacturing this vehicle. I’m not able to drive it and now they keep telling me that they don’t have the part or can’t find it.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-12
- VIN: 1GCGTDEN5J1
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: While driving my 2018 Chevy Colorado with 42000 miles I noticed my vehicles steering would get stuck while making turns on the highway and local streets. The problem was intermittent and was getting worse. I didn't receive any warning lights or codes for this problem but realized I had to bring it to a Chevy dealer to try to resolve the issue because I was afraid to drive it any longer due to steering possibly locking up completely. The mechanic at Island Chevy in Staten Island said the electronic rack and pinion steering gear failed and I had to replace with a new one. The cost of the repair was $2700 dollars. I was very shocked by the price due to age of car, the low mileage and never doing any off road driving. I did have another mechanic look at this problem before Chevy did and couldn't pinpoint the exact issue at the time I brought it in. The mechanic told me to bring it to Chevy to hopefully pinpoint the problem and see if there were any recalls or warranties on it.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-04
- VIN: 1GCGSDEN9J1
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Transmission is slipping and vibrates while driving. Delayed acceleration.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-08
- VIN: 1GCGSBEN2J1
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: While driving, there is noticeable “shudder” that seems to feel like an issue with the transmission when it is shifting (automatic transmission). Research online shows this to be a consistent issue and concern with many owners of the 2018 Chevy Colorado. Having this shudder has not had a solution by the several mechanic shops I’ve been to. Nobody seems to know what is causing this issue, but with many owners having this same problem there must be something that Chevrolet can do to resolve this issue. We bought the vehicle brand new in 2018, and it is now paid off, but this shudder while driving has happened since we have owned the vehicle. It seems to be more prevalent while driving between 30 mph to 60 mph. The shudder happens during ever drive we take. We have the vehicle maintenance performed on all of the recommended intervals for oil, fluids, tires, brakes, etc. This is definitely something that should be a recall.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-01

- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: The flapper just inside the fuel filler pipe has broken loose, allowing water or dust to enter, potentially causing engine failure.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-03
- VIN: 1GCHSCEN9J1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The vehicle will not stop unlocking itself. even while moving.

I highly recommend this truck! It has great mileage for a pickup and is very quiet and comfortable. While it may not be a speed demon, it is still very acceptable. The seats could be a bit wider and softer, but getting in and out is a breeze with no twisting required. I love this truck so far! Additionally, the phone and Bluetooth capabilities are excellent, but the radio reception seems poor. If you do your own maintenance, you will love it as everything is very easily accessible.
-
This is the best mid-size truck I've owned in years! It has more power than my previous Tacoma, which was a 4-cylinder from the same year. Plus, unlike the Tacoma, it even offers CarPlay and Android Auto! (The Tacoma didn't offer those until 2020, haha!)
-
We've had our crew cab short bed Z71 for about a year and a half now and we absolutely love it! The truck looks amazing, runs awesome and has great features. We especially love the Bose system and the heated seats. The AC works almost too well...sometimes you can't help but freeze yourself out. We've only had to use the 4WD once so far, but it worked great. Overall, we're very happy with our purchase!
-
A bit expensive, but I'm sure you'll love it.
-
Handles great with excellent gasoline mileage!

We purchased the truck brand new with only 5 miles on the odometer. Unfortunately, we began to notice a concerning sound, possibly originating from the transmission, which only worsened as the mileage increased. Additionally, the engine light illuminated at 3,400 miles. Due to the dealership's overbooking and inability to accommodate us, we made the decision to trade in the vehicle while we still had the opportunity. We have since returned to Ford and will not be considering another Colorado in the future.
Nick Brown 2024-10-04
I drove one for five days and unfortunately, I found the seats to be very uncomfortable. Additionally, the infotainment system was not dependable and kept dropping connections. I was disappointed with the pickup's performance as it felt underpowered, had erratic braking, and poor fuel economy. However, I am now back in my F350 FX4 diesel and I am very happy with it.
Timmy Boehm 2024-08-03
As an older buyer who has driven Chevrolets for years, I was disappointed with this one. It only has a half reese hitch and the auto driver's window is difficult to control. The 6-speed transmission can be a bit tricky to use, especially when trying to put it in reverse. Additionally, the bed is quite high up, which may not be to everyone's taste. However, it does come with a backup camera, although the backup pattern doesn't always appear. The space behind the seat is unfortunately not very useful, as it doesn't come with any storage or seats. Despite these issues, it does have power seats, which is a nice touch. I would recommend considering other options such as Nissan or Toyota. Lastly, I had a high-pressure experience with the dealer, so I would advise against buying from Star Auto in Waynesville/Waynesville Chevrolet.
Cristina Stroman 2024-07-12
The issue has persisted despite 7 previous visits to the shop and GM's lack of response. It is now necessary to involve an attorney to resolve the matter.
Noe Hickle 2024-05-26
I recently purchased a new Colorado, which was a big investment for me. I had high hopes for this truck, hoping it would have a great resale value to make up for the initial cost. While I loved the interior and handling, unfortunately, I experienced some issues with the rumbling transmission, even after GM had attempted to fix it. The dealership suggested a fluid exchange, but I was skeptical that this would solve the problem. Additionally, I had some trouble with the cabin freezing up during the winter, but the dealership was able to fix this issue. When the brakes started squeaking loudly at only 3500 miles, I was really disappointed. This was my dream car that I had been saving up for over two years, so it was really disheartening to have these issues. I'm hesitant to consider another Chevy in the future, but I'm hopeful that I can find a reliable vehicle that meets my needs.
