2002 Mercury Mountaineer problems

mercury logo

The Mercury Mountaineer is a mid-size luxury sport utility vehicle (SUV) that was sold by Mercury from 1996 until 2010. Sharing many of its features with the Ford Explorer, the vehicles were virtually identical in terms of hardware. Externally, they were styled somewhat differently, and the Mountaineer was positioned with a more upscale interior, with the Mountaineer's MSRP coming in at $1,000–$6,000 more than the Explorer. It was last redesigned for the 2006 model year with a new frame, looking very similar to its previous model.

Some controversy resulted after the media highlighted a number of rollovers involving Explorers and Mountaineers fitted with Firestone tires. The Mountaineer has been praised for its excellent handling and stability. The Mountaineer was never sold in Canada. As part of the discontinuation of the Mercury brand, production of the Mountaineer ended in late 2010.

Background

In 1990, General Motors introduced the Oldsmobile Bravada sport-utility vehicle, derived from the four-door Chevrolet S-10 Blazer. Though far lower in price, the Bravada was marketed as a competitor to the Range Rover (and the later Land Rover Discovery) and Toyota Land Cruiser. While sharing its body with the Blazer, Oldsmobile differentiated the Bravada with the use of model-specific trim and a dedicated all-wheel drive powertrain (in place of part-time four-wheel drive). For 1993, Jeep briefly revived the long-running Grand Wagoneer nameplate as part of the Jeep Grand Cherokee model line, using woodgrain exterior trim and a leather interior; limited sales led to its cancellation after a single model year.

As a response to the Bravada and the Grand Wagoneer, Ford introduced the 1993 Ford Explorer Limited in 1992. In contrast to the outdoors-themed Explorer Eddie Bauer, the Limited was geared towards on-road driving; it was fitted with all-wheel drive in place of traditional four-wheel drive. The Limited was also distinguished by monochromatic body trim, body-color bumpers, and chrome wheels.

As part of the redesign of the Explorer for 1995, the Limited remained part of the Explorer lineup, with the segment gaining additional competitors through the use of badge engineering. For 1996, the Acura SLX (Isuzu Trooper), Infiniti QX4 (Nissan Pathfinder), and the larger Lexus LX450 (Toyota Land Cruiser) were introduced together.

As these brands, along with Oldsmobile, competed more directly with luxury brands than the Ford model line, Ford Motor Company sought to develop SUVs for its Lincoln-Mercury division. To minimize model overlap, Mercury was chosen to sell a version of the mid-size Ford Explorer, while Lincoln would sell a version of the then-upcoming full-size Ford Expedition.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-02
  • VIN: 4M2ZU66W62Z
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: Aftermarket rack and pinion system re-manufactured by Detroit Axel began leaking fluid and caused a loss of power steering within 3 months of purchase. A second unit was installed and after about a year had the exact same failure as the first unit. Also resulting in the loss of power steering. It is my contention that Detroit Axel is not capable of re-manufacturing to a satisfactory safety standard. I believe they should be investigated and perhaps subject to a product recall. I pray nobody has yet been killed by their ineptitude!

  • Summary: WHILE DRIVING THE "OD" LIGHT STARTED FLASHING AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT SHIFT FROM 2ND TO THIRD GEAR. IT WOULD JUST REV UP. IF YOU LET OFF THE GAS IT WOULD USUALLY SHIFT INTO 3RD GEAR. I WAS GOING TO TRY TO CHECK THE FLUID BUT COULDN'T FIND THE DIPSTICK. I CHECKED THE MANUAL AND FOUND OUT THERE IS NONE. WHEN I CHECKED ONLINE FOR HELP I FOUND ALL THE OTHER COMPLAINTS THAT WERE EXACTLY LIKE MINE. IT IS VERY DISAPPOINTING THAT FORD WILL NOT ISSUE A RECALL ON THIS OBVIOUSLY POORLY DESIGNED TRANSMISSION. THIS IS A VERY EXPENSIVE PART FOR AN OWNER TO REPLACE AND IS A SAFETY ISSUE AS YOU COULD LOSE THE ABILITY TO ACCELERATE AT A CRITICAL MOMENT. WITH AS MANY COMPLAINTS AS I AM SEEING ONLINE THERE SHOULD DEFINITELY BE A RECALL. I HOPE IT DOESN'T TAKE SOMEBODY GETTING HURT OR KILLED FOR ACTION TO BE TAKEN. *JS

  • VIN: 4M2ZU86K92Z
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: WHILE DRIVING AT AROUND 35 MPH THE O/D LIGHT STARTED FLASHING, ERROR MESSAGE CHECK TRANSMISSION AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STAYED ON. THE VEHICLE STARTED SHIFTING ERRATICALLY FROM A START THEN HAD PROBLEMS SHIFTING INTO GEARS. I BROUGHT IT TO MY MECHANIC AND DECIDED TO CHANGE, CLEAN AND FLUSH TRANSMISSION FLUIDS. THIS DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. I THEN WENT ON LINE TO FIND CURES FOR THIS PROBLEM AT FORD MOTOR CO WEB SITE AND THERE WAS NO INFORMATION THERE . I SEARCHED THE WEB FOR SIMILAR PROBLEMS AND CAME UP WITH OVER 500 COMPLAINTS WITH FORD BLAZERS' AND MOUNTAINEERS 2002 THROUGH 2004 TRANSMISSION RELATED PROBLEMS WITH THE SAME SYMPTOMS..5R555 SOLENOID PACK. I FOUND A COMPANY THAT CLAIMED THE PROBLEM IS THE TRANSMISSION 5 SOLENOID PACK NEEDING A UP GRADE AND THIS SHOULD SOLVE THE PROBLEM THROUGH USA INDUSTRIES IN BAY SHORE NY. PURCHASED THIS OEM FORD UPGRADE PACKET, INSTALLED THIS MIRACLE PART AND THE PROBLEMS WERE STILL THERE. NOW USA INDUSTRIES DOESN'T WANT TO HEAR ABOUT REFUNDING MY MONIES EVEN THOUGH I AM STILL IN THE REFUND TIME LIMIT.. HOPEFULLY EBAY WILL RESOLVE THERE POOR CUSTOMER RELATIONS ISSUE. FORD CLAIMS I NEED TO HAVE A COMPLETE TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT AT APPROXIMATELY $2500.00. I SPOKE TO SEVERAL FORD CERTIFIED MECHANICS AND THEY TOLD ME THAT FORD IS AWARE OF THIS ISSUE BUT ARE HESITANT TO ISSUE A RECALL SINCE THERE HAVE BEEN NO DEATHS.. CAN THAT BE FOR REAL????? IS ANYONE ELSE READY TO STAND UP TO FORD FOR A RECALL DEMAND ON OUR CARS?? *TR

THEN YESTERDAY WHILE HAVING THE BRAKES FIXED AND TRYING TO HAVE IT TEST DRIVEN, THE KEY WAS STUCK IN THE IGNITION AGAIN AND NOT ABLE TO MOVE TO THE ENGINE START POSITION. THIS IS RIDICULOUS, IT NEEDS TO BE SOMETHING DONE ABOUT THIS SITUATION SINCE THIS IS AT SOME POINT, CAUSE AN INJURY. FORTUNATELY, BOTH TIMES MY VEHICLE WAS PARKED. BUT WHAT IF SOMEONE ELSE ISN'T?
