The Kia EV6 (Korean: 기아 이브이식스) is a battery electric compact crossover SUV produced by Kia. Introduced in March 2021, it is the first Kia dedicated electric vehicle, and the first model developed on the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) similar to the Hyundai Ioniq 5. It is also the first model to be named under the new nomenclature designated for a line of Kia electric cars, which will range from EV1 to EV9. The EV6 is the 2022 European Car of the Year.

Overview

The EV6 was released on 2 August 2021 after a set of pictures were revealed on 15 March 2021. Developed under the codename CV, it is the first Kia model based on the E-GMP electric car platform.

The GT model is claimed to have a 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) time in 3.5 seconds, with dual electric motors producing 430kW of power (576hp) and 740Nm of torque combined, Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres, a rear electronic limited-slip differential, electronically controlled suspension, and minor exterior and interior changes.

It features a panoramic curved display panel inside, which opens up more space while a controller for transition between infotainment and HVAC below the navigation screen and touch buttons for using heated seat as well as steering wheel further enhance driver usability. The EV6's boot space is 520 L (18.4 cu ft) (VDA standard) and it can be increased up to 1,300 L (45.9 cu ft) when the rear seats are folded. The crossover is claimed to be furnished with eco-friendly materials across the interior, fabric or artificial suede/leatherette seats, and ambient lighting. It's also availbale with an augmented reality head-up display, 360° camera option, remote controlled parking, along with safety technologies including Lane Follow Assist, Highway Driving Assist 2 (semi-autonomous adaptive cruise control) including auto lane changing, AEB collision avoidance, remote smart parking assist and Safe Exit Assist.

  • VIN: KNDC44LA1N5
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: EV6 12v Battery isn't being maintained by the system and has failed and needed replacement. ICCU has been inspected under the recall but not replaced. The 12v battery is out of 36k mile warranty and has to be replaced out of pocket, when early failure is likely due to keeping the battery in an undercharged state.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-15
  • VIN: KNDC4DLC1N5
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I recently experienced a serious safety issue with my less than 3-year-old Kia EV6. The 12-volt battery unexpectedly failed, rendering the vehicle inoperable, including the doors. This occurred twice: once while the battery was still under warranty, and again after the warranty expired. The second failure left my wife and daughter stranded in a dark parking lot at night. Despite numerous online reports of similar incidents, Kia refused to replace the battery under warranty, citing the mileage. This is a significant safety concern, as a failed battery can leave drivers stranded in dangerous situations. I contacted Kia corporate to request compensation for the replacement battery, but they declined. I believe Kia should take responsibility for this widespread issue and replace these defective batteries at no cost to consumers.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-24
  • VIN: KNDC44LA6N5
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: On multiple occasions, while driving on the freeway, the vehicle experienced a clunking noise and complete loss of propulsion. Safety was put at risk as the vehicle had to navigate off to the shoulder of the freeway at a speed significantly slower (due to no acceleration available) than traffic with reduced braking capability. Once on the shoulder the vehicle needs to be turned off then on again then it functions as normal. Due to the intermittency of the issue, the dealer was not able to reproduce the problem, therefore they will not fix it. When the issue occurs, there are no warning messages on the display. The dealer has stated there are no error codes stored in the computer. This issue seemed to go away after an ICCU fix was applied, but came back after the ICCU recall was recently applied. STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-01
  • VIN: KNDC4DLC2N5
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: The sunroof glass exploded on a hot day while my wife and I were in the car traveling 55 mph with the air-conditioning on. The remaining glass edges were flared up and outward. The sunroof glass was fully closed and the cloth sun shade covered the glass. It was either improperly installed or the materials could not withstand the heat. Nothing impacted the glass. The glass could have cut & injured us badly or blinded us, causing an accident with another vehicle or property. I felt this was a manufacturer's defect, but Kia denied us a warranty repair. I have pictures of the large hole in the middle of the glass. The vehicle was driven to the dealer where it was available for inspection. My insurance was notified. There was no warning or symptoms of this problem.

  • Summary: Originally this 2022 Kia EV6 on the dashboard was showing 225-230 miles at 100% charge. Then the dashboard charge at 100% showed only 180 miles. I got the Recall Notice about this matter, took it in to the Kia dealer. They did a software download and then the dashboard charge at 100% showed 195 miles. I took it back and Kia did another software download, then the dashboard charge at 100% showed 205 miles. Kia declared my EV6 was fixed. I have driven it only 10,000 miles !!!! The software download did NOT fix the problem because it is still not showing the pre-software problem charge at 225 miles. This is a 10% loss of range

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-26
  • VIN: KNDC3DLC9N5
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The 12v battery in my vehicle failed due to the known ICCU issue. The dealership has the battery and has since replaced it. I do not know if they keep it for their records or not. My family's safety was put at risk due to the unpredictable timing of the failure, we were parked (thankfully) but there was a massive thunderstorm headed our way and we had to hunker down while waiting for a tow truck and a ride. This issue has been reproduced & confirmed by dealerships and other EV6 users (check [XXX]). The vehicle has been inspected by the dealership but no others at this time. There was no warning that the battery was about to fail, we were out at a park for the day and got in at the end when we tried to turn on the vehicle - it gave us an error "12v battery critically low" and then turned off. Kia has issued a recall for the ICCU, but not covered under this recall is the 12v battery which the ICCU causes to fail early. A bad ICCU (Integrated Current Control Unit) can decrease the lifespan of a 12V battery in several ways: Improper Charging Voltage, Inconsistent Current Flow, Battery Drain, Heat Generation, & Inaccurate State of Charge Monitoring. Kia is fixing the cause of a battery failure but not the battery itself. Thankfully we were parked when the battery failed (no longer will hold a charge) but this is a huge risk and should also be covered in this recall. STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-01
  • VIN: KNDC4DLC5N5
  • Components: STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Several months ago, a bit of road debris hit the front grill and broke a piece off. Soon after that I began receiving messages of 'check vehicle electrical system', 'active air flap warning', and another that at this point I do not recall. The overall repair cost nearly $6,000. An employee at Emich Kia reported that there were two other 2022 Kia EV6 cars that came in for the same repair. The employees exact words, "This is a design flaw that they have fixed for the newer models." I am reporting this because I also believe that it is a design flaw. Why put so much plastic on the lower front grill that can be easily broken?

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-09
  • VIN: KNDC3DLCXN5
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: In April 2024 my Kia EV6 unexpectedly didn’t start. I jump-started the car and I brought the car to the Kia dealership where I bought the car, Arapahoe Kia, at 9701 E Arapahoe Rd, Centennial, CO 80112. I brought my car in on [XXX], and explained that my car didn’t start, seemingly for no reason. They inspected the car and later that day the dealership gave the car back to me and told me they couldn’t find any problems. I argued with them, I tried to explain that there was obviously something wrong for the car to just not start for no reason. They again told me there wasn’t a problem with the car. On [XXX], the car failed to start again. I jump started it again. The Kia app on my phone then informed me that my car might be subject to a recall, and that’s when I learned about recall SC302. This recall is due to a problem involving the 12 volt battery. I feel my car obviously experienced the same problem that the recall was meant to address, I brought my car to the dealership AFTER the recall was issued, and the dealership didn’t fix the problem, and the dealership apparently didn’t know about the recall. I feel like the dealership’s complete failure to address this recall problem put my life in danger. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-19
  • VIN: KNDC3DLC9N5
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: On April 13, 2024, when I started my vehicle, the instrument cluster immediately flashed the following warning msg surrounded by a flashing red circle: 12V Battery Very Low Stop Safely I turned the vehicle off, waited a few seconds and when I started it again the message did not appear. I contacted KIA USA and received a Recall Inquiry Case #. On April 18th, when I started my vehicle the same 12V Battery Very Low, Stop Safely msg displayed. It did not disappear upon restarting. Within 5 mts ALL the electrics were dead, including the instrument cluster AND the parking/emergency brake control AND the Vehicle Start On/Off button. I am very fortunate I was not driving on the highway when this occurred. Ditto for other drivers. My vehicle had to be towed to my dealer/service center. The tow service jumped the 12V battery and was able to drive it up on the flatbed. Today (April 23rd), my dealer/service center representive informed by the 12V battery tested okay, and the vehicle diagnostics they ran have not revealed any issues with the vehicle electrical system. They have been unable to reproduce or confirm the problem so far. My vehicle is still at my dealer/service center. What occurred is identical to the issues identified in the NHTSA Recall No: 24V-200 & KIA Recall No: SC302.

Negative 2022 Kia Ev6 car reviews

  1. Norris Turcotte 2024-07-06

I purchased my 2022 EV-6 GT-Line AWD in May of 2022. It was a fantastic experience driving it, with its sporty design and advanced technology. However, I would like to share some important information with you. The AWD model has a maximum range of 274 miles, which can vary depending on the weather and your driving habits. It is recommended to keep the battery between 20-80% charge most of the time, and only charge it up to 100% right before going on a long drive. For daily driving, you can charge it to 80% which gives you 212 miles range and you recharge at 20% which is 53 miles range, leaving you with a useable range of 159 miles. In extremely cold conditions, electric cars can lose up to 40% range. Additionally, it's important to note that the $7,500 tax credit for driving an EV is non-refundable and will only come off what you owe the IRS up to $7,500. To benefit from the EV tax credit, make sure you adjust your payroll deductions so that you will owe the IRS when it comes time to do your taxes. I hope this information helps you make an informed decision about purchasing an EV.

  2. Eino Hermann 2024-03-18

I've put 8000 miles on my Ev6 GT. As someone who buys 2-3 cars a year, I was initially impressed with the Ev6. However, after 6 weeks in the shop, I'm getting ready to sell it once I get it back. Unfortunately, the sound system in these cars is very weak to begin with and has been the source of my problems. When the sound system went out, I insisted that the dealer install a new amp, but they refused and only replaced a speaker that was out and had smoke coming from it. It took them 5 weeks to get the speaker and now they've figured out that it's the amp, so the wait continues. Meanwhile, they've given me a bare bones Sportage loaner car. As someone who holds manufacturers to high standards, I'm disappointed that the Ev6 does not pass at this point. Until Kia figures out the sound system issues, I wouldn't recommend buying it. When the amp goes, it takes down other systems in the car, which is a shame considering how much money they spent on the platform. While the Ev6 is a nice car, it spends a lot of time in the shop, which makes me wonder how many amps it's going to go through. I wouldn't be surprised if a Meridian class action lawsuit is coming.

Positive 2022 Kia Ev6 car reviews

  1. Sim Hackett 2025-01-09

I really like the car! Although, I must admit that the technology has a bit of a steep learning curve. The car takes off like a rocket in any of the drive modes and the sound system is fantastic! There are some minor tweaks that could be improved, such as better door handles, and all trim levels are missing a rear window wiper.

  2. Eino Goldner 2024-11-05

Very powerful and smooth! I also used the power outlet to power my fridge and lights when our power went out. How cool is that?

  3. Louisa Torphy 2024-10-26

I recently had the opportunity to drive an EV6, which was my first experience driving an electric vehicle outside of a Tesla. While the car had some features that are more commonly found in traditional combustion engine vehicles, such as numerous buttons and switches, overall it was a unique and interesting experience. I was surprised to find that the frunk was not present, and instead the front of the car resembled a typical combustion engine bay. The driving experience with the single motor was not particularly exciting, but the dual motor provided a more enjoyable ride. Although it did not have the same level of power as a Tesla, I found the EV6's stylish design to be quite cool.

Hey there! I'm really enjoying my new car. It's only been a couple of days, but I wanted to take a moment to share my thoughts with you. Edmunds has been asking for my review, so I thought I'd drop by and say that I'm really happy with my purchase so far!

You should have had this 20 years ago! It's super fast and fun to drive.
