2013 Ford Escape problems

ford logo

The Ford Escape is a compact crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Ford Motor Company since the 2001 model year. The first Ford SUV derived from a car platform, the Escape fell below the Ford Explorer in size; the Escape is currently sized between the Ford EcoSport and Ford Edge. The 2004 Ford Escape Hybrid was the first hybrid-electric vehicle from Ford, and the first hybrid produced as an SUV.

The first two generations of the Escape used the Ford CD2 platform (jointly developed with Mazda), leading to the release of the Mazda Tribute and Mercury Mariner; as with the Escape, both the Tribute and Mariner were marketed in North America. In Europe, the Escape was initially branded as the Ford Maverick from 2001 to 2008 (replacing a Nissan-produced SUV).

Under the mid-2000s "One Ford" globalization strategy, the third and fourth-generation designs of the Escape have been unified with the Ford Kuga, designed by Ford of Europe. Sharing a common body and chassis underpinnings (and several engines), the Escape and Kuga are manufactured in their home markets. As with previous generations, the fourth-generation Escape is offered with gasoline, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid options. Outside of North America, the Ford Escape is marketed in Australia, China, and Taiwan.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-26
  • VIN: 1FMCU0GX3DU
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: This is the second time that I have had issues with a coolant leak leeching onto my engine. The coolant leaks out and causes toxic fumes in the cabin that have repeatedly caused me and my passengers severe damage to our mucus membranes resulting in coughing and difficulty breathing. I have literally had to drive with my windows down in the cold autumn air because I cannot breathe in my vehicle. There has been no warning or check engine light that has come on at all in either of these experiences. It has been my mere experience of health issues that has resulted in me needing to bring the vehicle in. As of right now there has been no recalls but evidently this has been a recurring issue and problem per my local mechanic as well as the forums that I find online. This is a huge issue that needs to be addressed to Ford customers.

Negative 2013 Ford Escape car reviews

I'm really glad to hear that you're happy with your vehicle! It sounds like it's been performing well for you, especially in the snow and muck. Your gas mileage seems to be right on track with what you were expecting, which is great. It's good to hear that you haven't had any issues so far and that the Sync system is working well with your phone, bluetooth streaming, and USB stick. From what you've described, it sounds like this is one of the most solid and heavy small SUVs on the market today, even if it is a bit pricey. I appreciate you sharing your experience with us and hope that you continue to enjoy your vehicle!

My family purchased the 2013 Ford Escape S about three months ago (this is July of 2013) and we were initially very happy. However, we experienced a sync problem and a lift gate problem within a week. Despite these issues, I must say that this is a very nice car, with a low base price and high MPG. The design of this car is also very appealing. If you are able to afford a slightly higher priced car, I strongly recommend that you do so. Another car that you might be interested in is the Chevy Equinox, which we also own and love three times more. It has a spacious 2nd row and a quiet interior, making it a better choice by a long shot.

This car has had numerous issues since we first acquired it, requiring multiple trips to the mechanic. Within the first two years, we experienced a range of problems, including a faulty sensor causing the car to flutter and shut off, a malfunctioning water pump, a back window switch that needed replacing, seat belts that wouldn't stop retracting, a front axle that needed replacement, a radio that wouldn't turn on, and a faulty alternator. The most frustrating aspect of this car, however, is the battery's placement under the dashboard, with only the positive connector sticking out. To remove the battery, the air filtration system must be removed, which is an unnecessary hassle. While I cannot speak to Ford's intentions, I have decided to switch to a Toyota and will not be purchasing another American-made car. Thank you for the lessons, Ford, Dodge, and Chevy.

I have experienced several issues with my car in the 10 months since I purchased it. It started with a tire leak, followed by sync issues, a bad headlight due to faulty wiring during Ford's manufacturing process, and the horn sometimes goes off when I open the back hatch. Recently, I noticed water leaking under the car, and the air and heat stopped working. The latest vehicle health report recommends that I take it in for service due to required brake and suspension maintenance. I purchased a new car to avoid these types of problems, and I previously owned a Toyota with 100k miles that never gave me any issues. Unfortunately, I will have to spend my valuable time taking it in for service once again. Additionally, during my last visit to the dealer, I felt like they were doing me a favor when they fixed the headlight - which was frustrating.

My 2013 Ford Escape has unfortunately experienced five recalls in just three years, and now the transmission is slipping and stalling. Despite these setbacks, I remain confident in the reliability of my vehicle. While there have been some issues with coolant leaks in the past, I have had them repaired and am optimistic about the future performance of my SUV. It's important to remember that every car brand can experience challenges, and I trust in the expertise of Ford to address any issues that may arise.

Positive 2013 Ford Escape car reviews

  1. Lee McDermott 2024-11-24

I'm so glad I bought this car in May! I haven't had any issues with it whatsoever. The engine is an absolute delight, providing strong and linear acceleration when you need it. The 6-speed transmission shifts smoothly, and the sport mode is perfect for tackling hills or twisty roads to eliminate unwanted shifts. While it's capable of decent gas mileage, the turbo is way more fun. But the really cool thing about this car is the way it handles. It's a fantastic trip car - I had 4 adults and a 1-year-old with a huge car seat, as well as clothes for 3 days in the back, loaded to the gills, on twisty roads, and it handled like a dream. It may be a bit pricey when loaded, but it's no more expensive than an Acura or VW Tiguan, neither of which can compare in terms of performance or feature set.

  2. Santiago Tremblay 2024-09-18

3,000 miles and I'm very pleased so far. Although, I have noticed that the center console armrest is too short for comfort and the armrests on the doors are poorly designed and useless on long trips. However, it's definitely fun to drive, feels solid and handles very well. Additionally, the gas mileage is quite good, but the gas tank capacity is too small. Lastly, the hand brake on the console is a bit annoying...I prefer the foot operated ones. Overall, it's a nice vehicle, but I do think it's a bit overpriced for what you get.

  3. Chandler Dare 2024-08-29

Hi there! We've actually owned this car since it was brand new and we've had no problems with it even after driving it for 75000 miles. We really like the way it drives and we're currently planning to replace it with a new Escape.

  4. Delaney Yost 2024-08-21

undefinedThe CD player recently stopped feeding disks and the dealer claims that they do not deal with audio repairs, but they kindly recommended a repair shop that can help. On 8/7/17, the horn stopped working at 66,100 miles, which was a safety concern. We had it repaired at our expense for about $200. Although some things have failed on this vehicle, it still gets me where I need to go safely. I have considered buying a Ford C-MAX Hybrid as my next vehicle. Hopefully, that won't be for quite a while. Overall, I may still buy a Ford in the future, as there are so many convenient features on this vehicle that I cannot live without now. It seems like the factory battery may have been faulty for a while, but it always tested as 'good' at the dealership, which is quite strange. However, a local repair shop has now tested the battery and found that it is 'bad'.

My wife and I purchased our Escape back in October 2012.We absolutely love it!We test drove the 2013 Kia Sorento SX (smooth but interior felt cheap), 2013 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring (too slow for me), and the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe 2.0L Turbo. The Santa Fe was nice, but the deal breaker for me with the Santa Fe was you could not get roof racks with the panoramic sunroof, as you could with the Escape. It also did not have memory seats. If I am paying for a vehicle fully loaded, I want it fully loaded.MPGs around the city are 21-22, Highway are 29-30.The only thing we didn't get on the car was the hands-free tailgate feature.I swapped it for a tow hitch.
