2000 Suzuki Vitara problems

suzuki logo

The Suzuki Vitara is a series of SUVs produced by Suzuki in five generations since 1988. The second and third generation were known as the Suzuki Grand Vitara, while the fourth generation eschewing the "Grand" prefix. In Japan and a number of other markets, all generations have used the name Suzuki Escudo (Japanese: スズキ・エスクード, Hepburn: Suzuki Esukūdo).

The choice of the name "Vitara" was inspired by the Latin word vita, as in English word vitality. "Escudo", the name primarily used in the Japanese Domestic Market, refers to the "escudo", the monetary unit of Portugal before adoption of the Euro. The original series was designed to fill the slot above the Suzuki Jimny. The first generation was known as Suzuki Sidekick in the United States. The North American version was produced as a joint venture between Suzuki and General Motors known as CAMI. It was also sold as the Santana 300 and 350 in Spain and in the Japanese market, it was also sold as the Mazda Proceed Levante.

The second generation was launched in 1998 under the "Grand Vitara" badge in most markets. It was accompanied by a still larger SUV known as the Suzuki XL-7 (known as Grand Escudo in Japan). The third generation was launched in 2005.

The fourth generation, released in 2015, reverted to the original name "Vitara" in most markets, but shifted from an off-road SUV towards a more road-oriented crossover style. It shares the platform and many components with the slightly larger SX4 S-Cross.

The model introduced in 2022 for the Indian market only reuses the "Grand Vitara" nameplate. It is slightly larger than the SX4 S-Cross.

Common 2000 Suzuki Vitara problems

The Suzuki Vitara, a popular SUV produced by the Japanese automaker, has been reported to have several common problems by its owners.

Another common problem reported by drivers is a rattling noise coming from the engine, which is often caused by problems with the timing chain.

Loss of engine power and rough engine idling have also been reported as common problems in the Suzuki Vitara.

The Suzuki Vitara's diesel particulate filter (DPF) is also known to have problems due to the model needing regular clean oil changes. This issue is more common in the Vitara's diesel models.

In addition to these problems, the Suzuki Grand Vitara, a specific model of the Vitara, has been reported to have some issues with reliability and build quality, particularly in the switchgear and controls. However, with proper servicing, these issues can be minimized, and the car should be largely trouble-free.

Some owners have reported issues with the clutch pedal falling to the floor and feeling loose, which is caused by a broken weld on the pedal pivot assembly. This problem can be resolved by replacing the clutch assembly with a new one.

The Suzuki Vitara is also known for its low beam headlights burning out quickly, which can be resolved by replacing the burnt-out bulbs with higher-quality ones.

Finally, some Vitara models built in 2011 have been reported to have a faulty internal spring in the drive belt tension pulley, causing a loud ticking noise from the engine. This issue can be resolved by replacing the tension pulley entirely with a new one.

In summary, the Suzuki Vitara has several common problems, including air conditioning issues, timing chain problems, EGR valve problems, and DPF problems. However, with proper servicing and maintenance, many of these issues can be minimized or resolved entirely.

SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-07-08
  • VIN: 2S3TC52C4Y6
  • Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: MY SUSPENSION CROSSMEMBER FAIL WHILE HITTING THE BRAKES ON AN OFFRAMP ON MY 2000 SUZUKI VITARA. MY WHOLE VEHICLE STARTED SHAKING VERY BADLY. THE PASSENGER NOTICED THE PASSENGER SIDE WHEEL SHAKING OUT OF CONTROL AND AFTER I INSPECTED IT, I FOUND THAT WHERE THE CONTROL ARM IS MOUNTED TO THE CROSSMEMBER, IS COMPLETELY RUSTED OUT. I FOUND THAT THERE IS A RECALL FOR THE EXACT SAME PART FOR THE 2000 CHEVY TRACKER WHICH IS BASICALLY THE SAME VEHICLE. COULD NOT FIND A RECALL ON THIS PART FOR THE VITARA HOWEVER. I THINK THIS SHOULD ALSO BE RECALLED. THE VEHICLE CAN NOT BE DRIVEN UNTIL THIS COMPONENT IS REPLACED AND SOMEONE COULD HAVE ALSO GOTTEN HURT. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-03-17
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: I WAS DRIVING TO WORK ON 3/18/08 AND AS I LEFT THE GAS STATION I HEARD THIS POP AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CAR CUT OFF. LATER AFTER HAVING IT TOWED TO A MECHANIC, I WAS TOLD THAT THE TIMING CHAIN BELT POPPED. I WAS ALSO NOTIFIED THAT THIS WAS A REGULAR OCCURRENCE WITH THE VEHICLE AND SUZUKI KNEW OF THIS, BUT HAD NO RECALL TO FIX OR CHANGE IT. I HAD NO IDEA OF THIS AND WAS TOLD WHEN BUYING THAT HAVING A CHAIN RATHER THAN A BELT WAS MUCH BETTER FOR YOUR CAR. NOT UNLESS IT POPS AND REPAIRS OF $2000 ARE NEEDED. I AM APPALLED THAT SUZUKI WOULD KNOW OF SUCH A PROBLEM AND IN NO WAY OF FIXING IT. I AM HOPING THAT SUZUKI COVERS THE COST OF THIS REPAIR AND REALIZES THAT THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THAT MOST OF THE CHARGE IS LABOR, BECAUSE IT WILL BE 11-13 HOURS TO GET TO THE CHAIN. I AM HOPING TO HAVE A REPRESENTATIVE LOOK AT THIS AND REALIZES THAT IF SOMEONE INVEST IN YOUR PRODUCT THAT MEANS THAT WE DON'T EXPECT IT TO NEVER BREAKDOWN, BUT IF IT DOES AND IT SOMETHING YOU KNEW WAS DEFECTIVE THEN YOU SHOULD HELP TO REPAIR IT. THANK YOU. *TR

  • VIN: JS3TE62V7Y4
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: SUZUKI IS AWARE OF LATENT DEFECTS CONCERNING TIMING CHAIN COVER SEALS THAT LEAK OIL AND WILL WORSEN OVER TIME. IT IS DOCUMENTED THAT THE LEAKS OCCUR WITH SUZUKI GRAND VITARAS FROM 1999-2001. MY GRAND VITARA IS ONE OF THOSE CARS WITH THE LATENT DEFECT. I TOOK IT TO A AUTHORIZED SUZUKI MECHANIC AS REQUIRED, BUT THEY NEVER INFORMED ME THAT SUZUKI WAS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. AFTER FURTHER RESEARCH ON MY PART DID SUZUKI CORPORATION ACKNOWLEDGE THEY KNEW OF THE LATENT DEFECT. I AM ASKING SUZUKI IN ALL FAIRNESS TO COVER THE COST OF THIS REPAIR BASED ON THIS DOCUMENTED EVIDENCE. *NM

  • Date Of Incident: 2001-05-15
  • VIN: JS3TD62V1Y4
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. MY WIFE BROUGHT IT IN TO ROYAL SUZUKI TUCSON,, ARIZONA REPEATEDLY WHILE STILL UNDER WARRANTY. DEALER KEPT TELLING HER IT WAS HER FAULT FOR NOT CLOSING GAS CAP TIGHTLY ENOUGH. THIS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES AT A CHARGE OF $50 , EXTENDED WARRANTY DEDUCTIBLE, EACH TIME. I EVEN BOUGHT A NEW GAS CAP, NO CHANGE. NOW THAT THE WARRANTY EXPIRED, THEY TELL US IT THE FUEL PRESSURE SENSOR IN THE TANK NEEDS REPLACING. THERE ARE NO AFTER MARKET PARTS FOR THIS, AND I REFUSE TO PAY THE DEALERSHIP FOR THE PART THEY SHOULD HAVE REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. THEREFORE, MY WIFE , LISA SCHRANT, IS DRIVING THE VEHICLE WITH THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CONSTANTLY ILLUMINATED. THIS MAY HIDE ANY NEW PROBLEMS WHICH MAY OCCUR.*AK

NOW AT 77,000 MILES AM BEING TOLD THAT MOTOR NEEDS REPLACEMENT. NO WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON. OIL CHANGES WERE MAINTAINED REGULARLY. TIMING CHAINS IN MOTOR HAVE BROKE. STILL OWE ON VEHICLE AND WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED AT 72,000 MILES. HAVE NEVER HAD PROBLEMS LIKE THIS WITH THE PURCHASE OF ANY OTHER VEHICLE. I ASKED DEALERSHIP WHY THE OIL SEALS WOULD GO OUT, THEY COULD NOT ANSWER THAT QUESTION. HAVE HAD OTHER VEHICLES WITH WAY OVER 100,000 MILES AND HAVE NEVER HAD TO REPLACE OIL SEALS. *NM

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2003-06-30
  • VIN: JS3TE62V8Y4
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: THE BRAKES ON MY 2000 SUZUKI GRAND VITARA HAVE BEEN REPLACED 4 TIMES IN 4 YEARS. THEY WERE REPLACED IN JUNE OF 2003 3 TIMES WITHIN 2 MONTHS BECAUSE THEY SQUEAK AND MAKE GRINDING NOISES. I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY MY SERVICE PEOPLE THAT THEY CONTACTED SUZUKI DIRECTLY AND WERE TOLD TO PUT ON SPECIAL NO SQUEAK BRAKES SO THEY DID---THEY STILL SQUEAK AND SOMETIMES GRIND. I HAVE HAD THE SERVICE PEOPLE CHECK THEM SEVERAL TIMES AND THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO TO FIX THE PROBLEM. WHEN WE REPLACED THE FIRST SET OF BRAKES--THE BRAKES WERE WORN REALLY STRANGE. ONE PAD WAS COMPLETELY GONE ON THE BOTTOM HALF AND REALLY THICK ON THE TOP HALF. I THOUGHT I KEPT THEM BUT AM NOT SURE. THEY HAVE NOT FAILED ME BUT I AM NOT SURE THAT THEY WON'T SOMETIME IF I HAVE TO PUT THEM ON QUICKLY. I HAVE HEARD OTHER GRAND VITARA'S WITH THE SAME PROBLEM--HAVE TALKED TO A COUPLE OF OWNERS AND THEY ARE JUST AS FRUSTRATED AS I AM. I ALSO HAD THE SAME IGNITION SWITCH PROBLEM AS ANOTHER PERSON HERE. I HAD TO HAVE MY SWITCH REPLACED 2 YEARS AGO AND NOW IT IS DOING THE SAME THING. I AGREE WITH THAT PERSON--IF I HAD NOT HAD IT DONE UNDER WARRANTY--IT WOULD HAVE COST 360.00 TO FIX. I WILL HAVE TO PAY THE 360.00 THIS TIME WHEN IT GOES OUT. SOMEONE NEEDS TO LOOK INTO SUZUKI'S MANUFACTURING OF THESE CARS. I ALSO HAD MY CONDENSER GO OUT ON ME IN AUGUST OF LAST YEAR. THAT IS A PART THAT IS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE THEY SO SELDOM GO OUT. MY CAR HAS 95000 MILES ON IT AND ALREADY I HAVE PUT LOTS OF MONEY INTO IT!!! PLEASE HELP ME OUT AND DO SOME INVESTIGATION ON THESE CARS. THANKS. *AK

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 1999-10-08
  • VIN: 2S3TD52V3Y6
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: MY PROBLEMS WITH MY VEHICLE STARTED RIGHT AWAY. I HAVE A 200 SUZUKI VITARA, AND WITHIN THE FIRST MONTHS I NOTICED IT WASN'T SHIFTING JUST RIGHT. I TOOK IT INTO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY TOLD ME THAT IT WAS NORMAL. RIGHT AWAY ALSO I NOTICED IT WAS LEAKING OIL AND WHEN I TOOK IT IN THE DEALERSHIP GAVE THE SAME ANSWER. FINALLY AFTER TAKING THE VEHICLE IN SEVERAL TIMES AND THEY WERE FORCED TO TO REALLY DEAL WITH THE ISSUES I WAS HAVING THEY TOLD ME TO BRING THE CAR IN THAT NEXT DAY. ON MY WAY TO THE DEALERSHIP MY VEHICLE STALLED. I CALLED A TOW TRUCK AND THE NEXT DAY WHEN I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP TO FIND OUT WHAT WAS GOING ON THEY TOLD ME THAT THE ENGINE HAD BLOWN DUE TO THE PROBLEMS THEY WERE NEGLECTING. THE ENDED UP CHANGING THE ENGINE AND THE TRANSMISSION. I WAS WITHOUT MY VEHICLE FOR 1 MONTH. WHEN I INTIALLY TOOK MY VEHICHLE IN I POINTED OUT A CRACK IN THE WINDSHEILD AND TOLD THEM THAT I HAD TAKEN MY VECHILE TO SEVERAL WINDOW REPAIR SHOPS. THE REPAIR SHOPS TOLD ME IT WOULD BE POINTLESS TO GET A NEW WINDSHEILD BECAUSE THE PROBLEM WAS WITH THE BODY OF THE VEHICLE. THE CRACK HAD STARTED FROM THE BODY, BUT THE DEALERSHIP REFUSED TO DEAL WITH THE PROBLEM, TO DATE IT'S STILL CRACKED. NOW MY KEY IS CAUGHT IN THE IGNITION SWITCH IT WILL GO TO THE ACCESSORY POSITION BUT IT WILL NOT RELEASE MY KEY. EACH NIGHT I HAVE TO DISCONNECT MY BATTERY, TO PERSERVE IT. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND I DIDN'T EVEN HAVE TO TELL THEM MY YEAR, MAKE OR MODEL THEY ALREADY KNEW WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS AND SAID IT HAPPEND QUITE A BIT. I JUST SUPRISED THIS KIND OF PROBLEM HASN'T BEEN PUT ON RECALL. MAYBE THERE ARE ENOUGH CUSTOMERS WITH THE SAME NUMEROUS PROBLEMS I HAVE HAD. *AK

Negative 2000 Suzuki Vitara car reviews

  1. Adrain Anderson 2024-09-06

I had this vehicle for 19 months and unfortunately had to visit the service department 6 times during this period. The first time was due to an electrical problem that prevented the vehicle from shifting out of park. Although it took 3 visits to resolve the issue, I insisted that the Suzuki Tech Rep be contacted and the problem was eventually fixed. The other visits were for a front axle shaft, an engine seal, a defective windshield wiper switch, and engine tapping. The dealership suggested changing the oil and waiting for two changes with anything but a 'Fram' oil filter to address the tapping issue. They also suggested adjusting the valves, but at my expense, which I found concerning during the warranty period.

Positive 2000 Suzuki Vitara car reviews

  1. Skye Walter 2024-09-26

Great little truck for the price! It's been five years since I got mine, and it still runs great. Just follow the maintenance in the owner's manual. I have the model with the manual 5-speed transmission and the 2.0 motor. I've carried everything from bowling balls to kayaks and even my 6'4 spouse. The only negative is that some of the plastic pieces in the interior broke, but it's not a big deal. It's also great for long road trips, and the convertible top is easy to use.

  2. Tavares Klein 2024-08-13

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share with you my experience with my new car. I purchased it about 2 months ago and got a great deal on it. It only had 49000 k and the gas mileage is amazing, especially compared to my old 89 Oldsmobile. It's so much fun to drive! The manual transmission alone is a blast, but zipping around in this car makes it even better. I love to just open the sunroof and unzip the back window. It sits like a truck but drives sporty. Thanks for listening!

  3. Gianni Mann 2024-04-16

This car may be small, but it has a sharp and stylish appearance, especially once you upgrade the wheels. It's our designated summer car and has a fun and enjoyable ride. Although it has a small motor, it's adequate with the stick transmission. I personally enjoy working on my own vehicles, and this car makes it easy with everything being accessible and in plain view. It's important to be cautious on the highway as it may roll if turned sharply, but it has good brakes and runs smoothly. We've had it for three years and doubt we'll ever get rid of it! If you plan on purchasing a newer model still under warranty, be aware that Suzuki does not honor expired warranties, even if they are only one mile over.

  4. Scottie Kub 2024-02-20

Bought 6 years ago with only 62K miles on it. Recently replaced the clutch as a precaution, not because of a problem. The pedal was way too low, but now it's perfect. Great on gas, although the AC is marginal. The cam sensor can be an issue in wet weather, but it's not expensive if you do it yourself. It's a great small 4WD car with a 2.0 engine that has good power. It's small enough to tow easily behind an RV. I'm very happy with this car.
