2006 Volvo S40 problems

volvo logo

The Volvo S40 is a series of subcompact executive cars marketed and produced by the Swedish manufacturer Volvo Cars from 1995 to 2012, offered as a more mainstream alternative to the compact executive Volvo S60 to compete in a lower pricing bracket. The S40 was more or less positioned against premium-leaning small family cars like the Volkswagen Jetta as well as some mass-market large family cars.

The first generation (1995–2004) was introduced in 1995 with the S40 (S from saloon) and V40 (V from versatility, estate) cars.

The second generation (2004–2012) was released in 2004, and the estate variant's name changed to V50.

The range was replaced by the Volvo V40 five door hatchback in 2012.

Common 2006 Volvo S40 problems

The Volvo S40 2006 has several common problems that may affect its performance, reliability, and safety. This article will discuss these issues in detail, based on complaints from owners of this car.

  • Rotten Egg Smell: A smell of rotten eggs inside the car is often due to a catalytic converter failure. This problem can be expensive to fix, but the damaged catalytic converter can be sold for a good price, which can help offset the cost of replacement.
  • Long Brake Time: The distance travelled when the brakes are applied can be overly long, leading to potential collisions. This issue is well-known in the S40 and is caused by the brake rotors (brake discs).
  • Leaking Sunroof: Water can come through the seams of the sunroof, leading to a musty smell in the car or signs of water damage on interior pillars or in the rear footwells. This problem is common in the S40 and is caused by blocked drainage channels on each side of the sunroof. Cleaning the top of the car to unblock the channels can resolve the issue.
  • Creaking Seats: The front seats of the S40 can creak excessively when you sit on them. This problem is not caused by loose runners, as one might assume, but by internal damage to the seats themselves. The only remedy is to replace the seats with newer ones, although this may not be financially viable in many cases.
  • Wobbly Key: The key can feel loose or wobbly when in the ignition, particularly in earlier models of the S40. This problem is due to the chunky design of the plastic key and its unusual high placement on the dashboard. Replacing the key and the ignition slot mechanism with the help of a mechanic is the only solution.
  • Instrument Panel Failure: The instrument panel can fail on the S40, most likely due to a poor connection between the information display and the ECU. Refitting the connection underneath the passenger side of the dashboard should resolve the problem.
  • Poor Starting/Loss of Power: The MAF (mass air flow) sensor can get clogged up, causing poor starting and a loss of power during driving. The loss of power results in poor acceleration, particularly at higher speeds. Removing and cleaning the MAF sensor with some MAF sensor cleaner should resolve the issue.
  • Headlight Switch Failure: The headlight switch on earlier models of the S40 is prone to failing. If it is not working, then you will need to replace the headlight switch to fix the problem.
  • Diesel Particulate Filter Clogging: Higher mileage diesel cars are more desirable than lower mileage ones because the diesel particulate filter can clog up on low-mileage cars, and it's very pricey to rectify.
  • Ignition System Issues: The S40 uses a chunky, plastic electronic ignition key that goes into a slot behind the steering wheel, high up on the dashboard. If the key feels loose or wobbly in the slot, both the key and slot are expensive to replace.
  • Central Locking System Failure: The central locking system can also give trouble if the key has become damaged or has been dropped.
  • Water Pump Failure: The water pump on the 1.6-litre diesel engine is a weak point and can fail, leading to engine overheating and potential engine damage.
  • Clutch Master Cylinder Failure: If there is any slack in the travel of the clutch pedal on manual gearbox cars, the master cylinder will probably need replacing.
  • Flickering Warning Lights: Flickering warning lights on the dashboard usually mean that the connection to the engine's computer, which runs behind the passenger footwell, has become loose.
  • Blocked Sunroof Drainage Holes: On cars fitted with a sunroof, check the carpets for any dampness as the drainage holes can become blocked, leading to rain water running down the inside of the window pillars.
  • Cracked Suspension Springs: If the car looks lopsided, or feels as if it’s leaning one way or the other during a test drive, the problem is most likely a cracked suspension spring.

In conclusion, while the Volvo S40 2006 is a reliable and safe car, it is not without its common problems. These issues can range from minor inconveniences, such as creaking seats and a wobbly key, to more serious concerns, such as oil leaks, catalytic converter failure, and brake problems. Regular maintenance, inspections, and timely repairs can help prevent these issues from becoming more serious and costly to fix.

How many miles does a 2006 Volvo S40 last?

200,000-mile

Many owners of the S40 rarely bring in their vehicles for major repairs. With proper maintenance and good driving habits, this car can easily reach the 200,000-mile mark.

Is Volvo S40 a reliable car?

The S40 is well designed and built and that means a reliable run for the most part. There are no serious flaws that afflict it; the things that tend to go wrong are fairly minor and individual. Volvos tend to be well looked after by caring owners, which can make them a good used buy.

What is the common fault on Volvo S40?

Poor engine idling

The throttle body can get blocked up on this car. If it is blocked then you will be finding that the engine is idling badly. It could either have low or high idling, erratic idling, which are clear indications for this failure.

How many miles can you put on a Volvo S40?

The estimated lifespan of a Volvo S40 is 286,000mi, before reaching the life expectancy upper limit. Fuel type is a major factor when looking into a vehicles lifespan/life expectancy.

What is the problem of Volvo S40?

There are two weak points in the oil system, the fuel pump and the water pump. When either of these fails, it causes overheating and means that your car will be using a lot more oil. If you're using excessive amounts of oil, or you notice any performance problems, checks that the pumps are both working correctly.

Are Volvo S40 reliable?

The Volvo S40 is generally considered a reliable vehicle because of its decent ownership costs, great gas mileage, and above-average consumer ratings. Many owners of the S40 rarely bring in their vehicles for major repairs.

Is Volvo S40 a safe car?

Dual front airbags, side airbags, head-protecting side curtains, whiplash protection systems and ABS brakes are standard equipment. Electronic stability control is standard on the 2.0T variant and optional on other variants. The front seat belt buckles are mounted on the seats and the upper anchorages are adjustable.

Why did Volvo stop making the S40?

Volvo will stop selling its mid-size sedan, the S40, and its station wagon “twin”, the V50, in the USA during the 2012 MY. The reason? You guessed it; poor sales.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-09-16
  • VIN: YV1MS390862
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT, MY CAR IDLED DOWN AND PRESSING THE GAS DID NOT PREVENT IT FROM COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND ALL OF THE LIGHTS CAME ON TO INCLUDE, WARNING LIGHTS, AIRBAG, STABILITY CONTROL, AND OTHERS INCLUDING ABS. FORTUNATELY WE HAD JUST EXITED THE HIGHWAY TO PURCHASE FUEL AND WAS IN NO IMMEDIATE DANGER. BECAUSE OF THE VEHICLES AGE IT WAS RECOMMENDED WE HAVE THE STARTER, OXYGEN SENSOR, SPARK PLUGS, 1 COIL PACK, AND BATTERY REPLACED; AND THE FUSES, FUEL PUMP, FUEL FILTER, ALTERNATOR AND WIRING EXAMINED, BUT THEY DID NOT NEED TO BE REPLACED. AFTER READING OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS OF THIS VEHICLE, I AM SERIOUSLY WONDERING IF THIS CAR IS SAFE. I DON'T WANT TO SPEND MORE MONEY AND STILL HAVE TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT MY FAMILY AND I BEING INVOLVED IN A COLLISION BECAUSE THE REPLACEMENT OF PARTS WON'T FIX AN UNDERLYING PROBLEM THAT MAY BE MUCH MORE SERIOUS.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-03-23
  • VIN: YV1MS382962
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)
  • Summary: THIS IS THE 3RD TIME THAT MY CAR HAS COMPLETELY STOPPED AND GONE IDLE WHEN I HAVE CHILDREN IN MY CAR. SINCE MARCH OF 2015 MY CAR STOPS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BUSY HIGHWAYS IN HOUSTON. IT STARTS SHAKING AND ALSO WON'T LET ME ACCELERATE WHEN I PRESS ON THE GAS AND IT IS SO SCARY FOR ME AND MY KIDS. I HAVE HAD THE THROTTLE BODY REPAIRED AT FIRST AND JUST LAST WEEK I HAD IT COMPLETELY REPLACED. I HAVE PAID OVER 1,000 DOLLARS WITHIN THE LAST MONTH ON THIS ELECTRONIC THROTTLE BODY ISSUE AND I WOULD LIKE FOR IT TO BE KNOWN THAT THIS CAR ISN'T SAFE. IT HAS PUT MY LIFE AT RISK AND MY KIDS AS WELL! WE WERE ALMOST KILLED TONIGHT BECAUSE OUR CAR IDLED AGAIN IN THE MIDDLE OF HIGHWAY 45 AND THE PEOPLE WHO ALMOST RAN INTO US SWERVED INTO ANOTHER LANE AND MISSED US LITERALLY BY MERE INCHES AND WE CAUSED A COLLISION BETWEEN TWO OTHER VEHICLES. I AM TIRED OF DISHING OUT MONEY AND I HAVE RECEIPTS TO SHOW FOR IT. IT HASN'T EVEN BEEN A WEEK SINCE THE THROTTLE BODY WAS REPLACED. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE ABOUT THIS! I HAVE CHILDREN AND THIS CAR IS NOT SAFE! I WAS TOLD THAT THIS WAS A SAFE CAR AND THE CAR FAX WAS CLEAN. I WANT TO KNOW WHY I AM HAVING SO MANY PROBLEMS AND WHY MY MONEY IS GOING TO WASTE. I SEE WHERE THIS ETM ISSUE ISN'T UNCOMMON IN VOLVO'S AND THAT THERE WAS A RECALL A FEW YEARS AGO. I HAVE RECEIPTS FROM ALL OF THESE REPAIRS I'VE HAD DONE AND I WOULD APPRECIATE IF SOMEONE WOULD REACH OUT TO ME AND LET ME KNOW WHAT CAN BE DONE. I HAVE TO GET TO WORK AND I ALSO HAVE TO GET MY KIDS FROM POINT A TO B SAFELY. I CAN'T AFFORD A BRAND NEW CAR AND I CAN'T AFFORD TO LOSE MY LIFE OR MY KID'S EITHER. SO AN EXPLANATION WOULD BE NICE. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,STRUCTURE,SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-03-07
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,STRUCTURE,SEATS
  • Summary: A DESIGN FLAW CAUSED FLOODING WITHIN THE CABIN OF THIS VEHICLE. THE SUNROOF DRAINAGE SYSTEM IS FAULTY AND OVER TIME LEAKS WATER INTO THE FLOOR PAN OF THE CAR, SOMETIMES ENOUGH WHERE FLOODING OCCURS. MY CAR FLOODED A FEW MONTHS BACK SO BADLY UP TO 10 GALLONS OF WATER WAS VACUUMED OUT. THE FLOODING CAUSED DAMAGE TO THE ELECTRICAL HARNESS/CONNECTIONS UNDER THE DRIVER'S/PASSENGER'S SEAT. CURRENTLY THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON, THE PASSENGER SEAT AIR BAG IS DEACTIVATED AND IT IS UNSAFE TO SIT IN THE PASSENGER SEAT AS THE AIR BAG COULD MALFUNCTION AT ANY TIME, ALL DUE TO THIS FLOODING AND THE ROOT CAUSE BEING THE FAULTY DRAINAGE SYSTEM THAT RUNS FROM THE SUNROOF THROUGH THE DASH OUT OF THE BOTTOM OF THE CAR. THERE IS A CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT, NO. 2:10-CV-04407-DMC-MF, AGAINST VOLVO FOR THIS SPECIFIC ISSUE, I BELIEVE THIS ISSUE IS LEADING TO MORE AND MORE PROBLEMS OVER TIME, MY VEHICLE CURRENTLY WON'T START AND THERE ARE ONLY $75K MILES ON IT, I BELIEVE WATER DAMAGE IS THE ROOT CAUSE FOR ALL ISSUES WITH THE VEHICLE AT THIS TIME, THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON ALL VEHICLES EFFECTED OR COMPENSATION TO KEEP DRIVERS SAFE IN THIS SPECIFIC VEHICLE. *TR

Negative 2006 Volvo S40 car reviews

  1. Imani Moore 2024-05-09

This car may not perform as well as some might expect. While it does have a turbo, it doesn't effectively come on until higher rpms of third gear. However, the car handles well and has a high center of gravity, which may not be for everyone. Aftermarket support may be limited, but this car could be a great fit for those who enjoy a heavy foot. It's important to note that gas mileage may not be the best. If you're a boy racer, you may want to look elsewhere as this car may not meet your expectations. Pushing it on the backroads could lead to handling issues. Overall, this car has potential and could be a great fit for some drivers.

  2. Rasheed Harber 2024-04-24

The vehicle experienced multiple issues, primarily related to electrical and control systems, requiring frequent visits to the dealership for service. As a result, I do not see any reason to repeat the Volvo experience.

Overall, I think this is a great vehicle for the money. The economy is fantastic, with 32+ mpg on the open road, and the features for a small car are impressive. While there are some issues with fasteners, which is unfortunately a hallmark of Ford vehicles, this s40 wears the mantle of its once-parent company very well. There are some fasteners strewn in the trunk, and some interior panel fasteners hanging loose, but these are minor issues that can be easily fixed. Additionally, the lower front grill fastener has never been aligned, and the headlamp washer almost pops back into the correct location. There is also an external air temp gauge that sporadically reads 20 degrees low, but it functions normally at the dealer. Despite these minor issues, I still think this is a great car.

I bought this car brand new and it has been an absolute joy to own. I love it so much that I've made it my garage queen - it's always polished and stored with care. We take it on vacations and long trips and it's the perfect luxury/sport car for us. Thank you so much, Volvo!

My new S40 is incredible. As a 23-year-old pre-dental student, I never considered a Volvo until a friend recommended it. Now, I can't stop raving about it. The safety features are unbeatable and surpass those of its competitors. Plus, it rides smoothly, handles curves and speed impressively well, and looks hot. In short, it's safe, sporty, fun, and stylish.

I was pleasantly surprised when I first drove it. The handling feels great, although it could benefit from a bit more power. After the first year, I had an issue where the car wouldn't start after filling up with gas, but thankfully I was able to call 24-hour roadside support (which I really appreciate).

This car is perfect for me! It's powerful thanks to the 5-cylinder turbo (and I love having a stick shift), fuel efficient, reliable, and good looking. My only concern is keeping it running forever since they no longer sell the stick shift. Plus, the 4WD is incredibly helpful when it snows.

  5. Jake Kautzer 2024-10-17

This is a fantastic sports car that can handle almost anything. I've been driving it for a month now and have taken it everywhere. The handling is outstanding, especially on mountain roads, and the engine never shows any signs of strain. In the city, it's a real head-turner because it's so different from the 'traditional' Volvo. If you're comparing it to BMW, Audi, Acura, and Lexus, it's definitely worth the money.
