2006 Subaru Impreza problems

subaru logo

The Subaru Impreza (Japanese: スバル・インプレッサ, Hepburn: Subaru Inpuressa) is a compact car that has been manufactured by the Japanese automaker Subaru since 1992. It was introduced as a replacement for the Leone, with the predecessor's EA series engines replaced by the new EJ series. It is now in its sixth generation.

Subaru has offered a 5-door hatchback body variant since 2008. The firm also offered a coupé from 1995 until 2001, a 4-door sedan up to the fifth generation, and a 5-door wagon from the Impreza's introduction which was replaced by a hatchback with the third generation in 2008. Mainstream versions have received "boxer" flat-four engines ranging from 1.5- to 2.5-liters, with the performance-oriented Impreza WRX and WRX STI models upgraded with the addition of turbochargers. Since the third generation series, some markets have adopted the abbreviated Subaru WRX name for these high-performance variants. The first three generations of Impreza were also available with an off-road appearance non-SUV package called the Outback Sport, exclusive to the North American market. For the fourth generation, this appearance package was raised up to be subcompact crossover SUV and renamed the XV (Crosstrek in North America), and is sold internationally. Colloquially, the car is sometimes referred to as Scooby.

Subaru has offered front- and all-wheel drive layouts for the Impreza. Since the late-1990s, some markets have restricted sales to the all-wheel drive model, putting the Impreza in a unique selling proposition in the global compact class, which is usually characterized by front-wheel drive. Japanese models remain available in both configurations.

A 2019 iSeeCars study named the Impreza as the lowest-depreciating sedan in the United States after five years.

Common 2006 Subaru Impreza problems

The 2006 Subaru Impreza is known for several common problems, primarily engine issues, transmission problems, and leaky head gaskets.

Engine problems are a significant concern for the 2006 Subaru Impreza. Many owners have reported issues with excessive engine oil consumption, which can be caused by worn-out piston rings and rod bearings. In some cases, this issue may require a complete engine rebuild, which can be expensive and time-consuming.

Transmission problems are another common issue for the 2006 Subaru Impreza. Many owners have reported that their transmission simply gave out, making shifting difficult and unsafe. Subaru dealers have often refused to cover the cost of repairs, citing abuse as the cause of the problem.

Leaky head gaskets are a significant concern for the 2006 Subaru Impreza, causing oil to leak. This problem has been observed at low mileage, around 71,550 miles, and the most common fix is to replace the head gasket altogether.

The 2006 Subaru Impreza also has issues with its windshields and windows, which can develop a film that impedes the passengers' view of the road, particularly during nighttime. This problem has been observed at around 2,900 miles, which means the Impreza is essentially brand-new.

In summary, the 2006 Subaru Impreza has several common problems, primarily engine issues, transmission problems, and leaky head gaskets. These issues can be expensive and time-consuming to fix, making it essential for potential buyers to be aware of these problems before purchasing a 2006 Subaru Impreza.

Adds safety risk for potential fire in engine bay. Has not be confirmed or inspected by nobody else at this moment for this car specifically, however it is a common issue for these model Subarus. There were no warning lamps or other symptoms prior to the failure. First appear when temperatures started to drop below 40 degrees F.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-09-21
  • VIN: JF1GG68646G
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: WHILE MY 75 YEAR-OLD MOTHER WAS DRIVING HOME FROM THE JOB SHE STILL WORKS TO PAY HER BILLS, THE BRAKES ON HER SUBARU FAILED. THE CAR WAS IN MOTION, PULLING OUT OF THE PARKING LOT OF THE BUILDING WHERE SHE WORKS. FORTUNATELY, SHE WAS ABLE TO GET TO A SAFE PLACE AND STOP THE VEHICLE, AND THANKFULLY SHE WAS NOT INJURED. UPON INSPECTION, WE DISCOVERED THE FAILURE WAS DUE TO CORRODED BRAKE LINES. THE LINES LEAKED IN THE RIGHT REAR AREA, NEAR THE WHEEL. INVESTIGATING ONLINE, I DISCOVERED A HUGE RECALL OF SUBARUS AROUND THE SAME YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL AS MY MOM'S. BUT ACCORDING TO SUBARU OF AMERICA AND NHTSA, UNFORTUNATELY, MY MON'S CAR IS FOR SOME REASON NOT COVERED BY THIS RECALL. THAT SEEMS LIKE AN OVERSIGHT, BECAUSE THE LINES ARE DEFINITELY CORRODED, AND MY MOM LIVES IN THE SAME 'SALT BELT' AREA (WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS) WHERE THE 600K+ OTHER, COVERED, SUBARUS ARE. I KNOW RECALL INVESTIGATIONS TAKE TIME, SO THIS COMPLAINT PROBABLY WON'T HELP US ' MOM WILL HAVE TO PAY OUT OF POCKET TO REPAIR THE LINES, WHICH WILL LIKELY COST ALL OF HER LIMITED MONTHLY INCOME FROM SOCIAL SECURITY AND JOBS ' BUT IF MAKING THIS COMPLAINT HELPS OTHERS, IT'S WELL WORTH THE EFFORT. THANKS VERY MUCH FOR YOUR ATTENTION AND ASSISTANCE.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-07-09
  • VIN: JF1GD79656G
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: HARD START, ROUGH IDLE, DROVE 3 MILES, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TURNS ON, CODE: P0021 BANK1/2. DID RESEARCH. IT'S A BANJO BOLT FILTER/SCREEN MINE WAS CRACKED IN HALF INSIDE THE OIL LINE RESTRICTING OIL TO THE TURBO. MANAGED TO REMOVE ONE EASILY ACCESSIBLE BANJO SCREEN WHICH FIXED HALF THE PROBLEM. THE OTHER BOLT VIRTUALLY NOT ACCESSIBLE BY ME. ALMOST ALL TURBO VEHICLES FROM SUBARU EXPERIENCE THIS PROBLEM AS CODE: P0021 OR JUST CATASTROPHIC TURBO/ENGINE/COOLANT FAILURE.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-07-22
  • VIN: JF1GG67616H
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: POSSIBLY RELATED TO TAKATA RECALL AFTER LOCAL DEALER SERVICED THE RECALL, THE AIR BAG LIGHT CAME ON. DEALER HAS SAID IT IS FAULT CODE 26, WHICH IS RELATED TO A FAILURE OF THE PASSENGER AIRBAG INDICATOR. THIS PROBLEM IS PERVASIVE AND WIDE SPREAD, A SIMPLE GOOGLE SEARCH WILL GARNISH TENS AND POSSIBLY HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE CITING THIS FAILURE. ON TOP OF SUBARU NOT BEING FORTHCOMING WITH THIS INFORMATION, THE DEALER HAS ONLY MADE PROBLEM WORSE IN THEIR ATTEMPT TO FIX WHAT SHOULD BE A SIMPLE WIRING ISSUE THAT MANY PEOPLE ARE ABLE TO FIX ON THEIR OWN. IT IS UNCLEAR IF THE PASSENGER AIRBAG WILL DEPLOY WHILE THIS CODE IS PRESENT. WE BELIEVE IT TO BE RELATED TO RECALL AS THE PASSENGER WIRING HARNESS IS INVOLVED IN THE REPAIR AND COULD HAVE BEEN INCORRECTLY INSTALLED OR THE PROBLEM WAS THEIR AND THE DEALER DID NOT TELL US ABOUT IT.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-12-01
  • VIN: JF1GD79656G
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: IN COLD TEMPERATURES WHEN STARTING THE CAR THERE IS A SMELL OF RAW FUEL THAT FILLS THE CABIN TO THE POINT WHERE I HAVE TO GET OUT OF THE VEHICLE AND AIR IT OUT BEFORE IT WOULD BE SAFE TO DRIVE. SUBARU HAS TSB'S ON THIS ISSUE FOR MANY VEHICLE MODELS AND YEARS BUT DOES NOT SEEM TO THINK IT IS WORTHY OF A RECALL. THIS ISSUE FIRST STARTED FOR ME ABOUT 3 YEARS AGO AND HAS BEEN A CONSTANT PROBLEM SINCE.

  • Summary: TAKATA RECALL I PURCHASED THIS CAR SIX MONTHS AGO FROM A SMALL DEALEERSHIP IN VACAVILLE, CA. I PAID HALF THE PRICE FOR THE CAR IN CASH THE DAY I BOUGHT IT AFTER THEY ASSURED ME THAT IT CLEARED THE STATE INSPECTION. • Summary: TAKATA RECALL, I RECEIVED A NOTIFICATION IN THE MAIL THAT THERE IS A RECALL FOR MY SUBARU IMPREZA'S AIR BAGS, I HAVE CALLED THE DEALER TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT FOR A REPAIR WHICH THE NOTIFICATION SAID WOULD TAKE 45MINUTES. THE DEALER SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT, I WAITED A WEEK WITHOUT BEING ABLE TO USE MY VEHICLE. THEN THE DEALER CALLED ME AND TOLD ME THAT THEY HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO GET THE PART. THEY ALSO TOLD ME THAT WHEN THEY DO FINALLY GET THE PART THE REPAIR WILL TAKE 3 DAYS. THEY STILL HAVE NOT CALLED ME TO SCHEDULE A NEW REPAIR TIME. I AM STUCK WITHOUT A VEHICLE STILL AND I USE THE VEHICLE FOR WORK. I HAVE NO IDEA HOW LONG I WILL BE WITHOUT A VEHICLE BECAUSE THEY WILL NOT TELL ME HOW LONG IT WILL TAKE TO GET THE REPLACEMENT PART. THEY ARE NOT REPAIRING MY CAR IN A TIMELY MANNER. I WOULD LIKE TO BE COMPENSATED. THEY CAN GIVE ME A NEW CAR OR A WORKING USED CAR WITHOUT DEFECT. THANK YOU

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-03-15
  • VIN: JF1GG68646G
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: TAKATA RECALL -- I HAVE A 2006 SUBARU. I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM THEM IN MARCH 2017 TELLING ME THERE WAS A SERIOUS ISSUE REGARDING THE TAKATA PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAGS, AT THAT TIME THEY INFORMED ME THAT THEY DID NOT HAVE A FIX. IT IS NOW OCTOBER 2017 AND I HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY INFORMATION FROM SUBARU REGARDING A FIX. WHAT DO I DO? IT CONCERNS THE SAFETY OF MY PASSENGERS AND QUITE POSSIBLY ME AS A DRIVER. IT IS NOT A EFFECTIVE SOLUTION TO WAIT FOR SOMETHING TO HAPPEN. THE RECALL NUMBERS ARE AS FOLLOWS: SUBARU -- TKC17; NHTSA 17V-016.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-10-13
  • VIN: JFGG68616G8
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: TAKATA RECALL. I HAVE RECEIVED MULTIPLE RECALL NOTICES, YET THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP HAS GIVEN ME MULTIPLE DATES BY WHICH THEY WOULD HAVE THE PARTS, HOWEVER, I KEEP CALLING THEM BACK AND I FEEL THAT THEY ARE TAKING FAR TOO LONG TO DO THIS WORK. I CALLED TODAY, 10-13-2017 AND SPOKE WITH TINA MARIE AT THE DEALERSHIP IN THE CUMBERLAND, MD AREA AND THEY SAID THEY HAVE A CALL LIST BUT "ANOTHER GIRL HAS THE LIST" SO TINA MARIE COULD NOT VERIFY EVEN IF I WAS ON THE CALL LIST OR NOT. THEY HAD TOLD ME BEFORE IT WOULD BE IN AUGUST 2017 I COULD HAVE THE WORK DONE, THEN, THEY TOLD ME SEPTEMBER. I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THIS ISSUE OF HAVING TO WAIT OVER A YEAR AND A HALF TO GET THIS WORK DONE.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-03-30
  • VIN: JF1GG68645G
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: TAKATA RECALL -- THIS IS REGARDING THE RECALL OF THE 2006 SUBARU IMPREZA PASSENGER AIRBAG. I RECEIVED A LETTER THIS YEAR (IN MARCH 2017) LETTING ME KNOW THAT THE AIRBAG WAS SUBJECT TO RECALL BECAUSE OF SERIOUS MAL-FUNCTION... SERIOUS ENOUGH THAT THEY SUGGEST I NOT HAVE ANYONE SIT IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. SINCE THEN I HAVE HEARD NOTHING FROM SUBARU... NOT EVEN A NOTE SAYING WHEN THEY ANTICIPATE THAT FIX WOULD BE READY. I FIND THIS NOT ONLY A SERIOUS LACK RESPONSIBLITY ON THEIR PART. I REALLY THINK THEY SHOULD BE REQUIRE TO PROVIDE A FIX FOR THIS SERIOUS ISSUE AND THAT THEY SHOULD NOTIFY ALL CONCERNED PERSONS WITHIN 30 DAY MAXIMUM AND THAT A FIX MUST BE AVAILABLE BY THE END OF THIS YEAR....I WOULD APPRECIATE A RESPONSE FROM YOU CONCERNING THIS ISSUE.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-08-01
  • VIN: JF1GG67636H
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: TAKATA RECALL: I FIRST PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE AND IT HAD AN AIRBAG LIGHT ON, BUT WITHOUT ANY HISTORY OF AN ACCIDENT. THE WEIGHT SENSOR ON THE DASHBOARD WHICH NOTIFIES YOU OF SOMEONE SITTING IN THE PASSENGER SEAT CHANGES FROM ON TO OFF JUST FINE. HOWEVER, THE AIRBAG LIGHT HAS REMAINED ON FOR THE LENGTH OF MY OWNERSHIP. I WANT TO KNOW IF THIS IS A DEFECTIVE TAKATA AIRBAG AND MY SPECIFIC MAKE AND MODEL WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL LIST OF VEHICLES, BUT IN TRUTH THAT IS THE MAIN ISSUE. I HAS HAD THE VEHICLE INSPECTED AN THERE DOES NOT SEEM TO BE ANY OTHER CONTRIBUTING FACTOR INCLUDING A FUSE SHORTAGE OR FAULTY DOME LIGHT.

EACH TIME I CALL SUBARU TO CHECK ON PARTS I GET A DIFFERENT ANSWER AS TO WHEN PARTS WILL BE AVAILABLE. IN JULY, I WAS TOLD 6-8 WEEKS. AFTER 8 WEEKS, I WAS TOLD THAT PARTS WOULD BE SHOWING UP IN 1-2 WEEKS (AT THE END OF SEPTEMBER). AT THE END OF SEPTEMBER, I WAS TOLD PARTS WOULD BE AVAILABLE SOMETIME BETWEEN SEPTEMBER AND FEBRUARY. WHEN I CALLED A WEEK LATER, I WAS TOLD PARTS WOULD BE AVAILABLE AT THE END OF SEPTEMBER. Negative 2006 Subaru Impreza car reviews

  1. Cicero Connelly 2024-07-15

Congratulations on your new purchase of a 2006 M5 2.5i wagon! It's great to hear that your wife is enjoying the first 500 miles. The 2006 redesign looks fantastic, and we're glad to hear that you appreciate the side impact air bags and the new lights. While the interior is well-built, we understand that the driver's seat may be slightly uncomfortable for taller individuals during longer trips. Perhaps a tiltable seat cushion could help alleviate this issue. We also understand that better fuel economy would be a plus, but we agree that AWD is a necessary safety feature, especially in snow country. We're thrilled to hear that you're pleased with your Subaru so far!

Positive 2006 Subaru Impreza car reviews

  1. Donald Dickens 2025-01-01

I purchased my 2006 Impreza sedan back in December 2013 with 110,000 miles on the clock for a mere $7,000. Although I did encounter an issue with the head gaskets leaking coolant, which set me back around $1,000 to replace at the Subaru dealership just a week after buying the car (due to a recall for Subaru's with the 2.5-liter engine for this Impreza body style), I have had a great experience with this car. Over the past two years, I have put 30,000 miles on it and have only needed to take it to the shop for oil changes and tire rotations - it's been super reliable! The all-wheel drive has allowed me to have a lot of fun in mud, sand, and ice - it's been an absolute blast! If you're planning on venturing off the beaten path, this car will have your back, as it has given me the confidence to drive through 3 to 4 inches of mud and really soft sand. The only downsides are that the road noise is quite noticeable, and I usually only get 25 mpg in mixed driving when I'm not driving like a racer. Overall, I absolutely love this car and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a daily driver with low maintenance costs, safety in mind, sporty looks, and all-weather dependability.

The WRX has excellent power and handling, but it may take some time to get used to the turbo-4 power delivery if you're accustomed to a torquey V6 like the Maxima. The car feels small and light, which adds to the fun factor. While the sound system and interior may not be as impressive as the Maxima's, the WRX's styling with its wheels, spoiler, and side sills is undeniably hot. The Limited package could offer more, especially considering its price range compared to the Legacy GT. Overall, the WRX is an outstanding all-around car that is very fun to drive. If you're considering a Subaru and already have a Maxima or similar car, the Legacy GT might be a better choice.

  3. Cade Stiedemann 2024-11-14

I purchased my car used in February with 52,000 miles on it. Although I have only driven it around town for errands, I recently took a 2-hour trip in the car. Despite its otherwise impressive handling and reliability, the uncomfortable seat overshadowed all the positives. In fact, I am still experiencing low back pain a week later.

  4. Norbert Rohan 2024-10-19

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it back in June '06 and it has 84,000 miles on it now. I couldn't be happier with it! It's an absolute blast to drive and handles great in the snow. Even after all these years, it still rides and handles like it did the day I drove it off the lot. The fit and finish are excellent and I've never had any problems with it. Thanks for taking the time to read about my experience!

  5. Taurean Murray 2024-09-26

What a pleasure to drive! Not only did I shave 20 minutes off my 2-hour commute, but I thoroughly enjoyed the drive. The acceleration, even when already in fifth gear, is impressive. At the dealership, I wasn't intending to purchase the WRX, but a 5-minute test drive left me wanting more time behind the wheel.
