2009 Volvo S40 problems
The Volvo S40 is a series of subcompact executive cars marketed and produced by the Swedish manufacturer Volvo Cars from 1995 to 2012, offered as a more mainstream alternative to the compact executive Volvo S60 to compete in a lower pricing bracket. The S40 was more or less positioned against premium-leaning small family cars like the Volkswagen Jetta as well as some mass-market large family cars.
The first generation (1995–2004) was introduced in 1995 with the S40 (S from saloon) and V40 (V from versatility, estate) cars.
The second generation (2004–2012) was released in 2004, and the estate variant's name changed to V50.
The range was replaced by the Volvo V40 five door hatchback in 2012.

Common 2009 Volvo S40 problems
The Volvo S40 2009 is known for several common problems, which are primarily related to the engine, drivetrain, wheels, and suspension.
One of the most common problems is the fuel rail pressure sensor, which is located on the front of the engine on the fuel rail. The job of the fuel rail pressure sensor is to communicate with the vehicle's computer and provide information about the fuel pressure inside the rail at all times. If there is an issue with the sensor, the driver may notice drivability issues such as lack of power, stalling conditions, increased fuel consumption, and a check engine light on the dash. The fix for this issue involves checking for error codes, replacing the sensor, and ensuring that the fuel pressure is within the specified range
Another common problem with the Volvo S40 2009 is the engine mounts, which can wear out over time and cause excessive vibration, noise, and movement of the engine. This issue can be more pronounced during acceleration, deceleration, and turning. The fix for this problem involves replacing the worn-out engine mounts with new ones to restore the engine's stability and reduce vibration
The front seats of the Volvo S40 2009 are also known to creak excessively, which can be a significant annoyance for drivers and passengers. This issue is often caused by internal damage to the seats rather than loose runners. The only remedy for this problem is to replace the seats with newer ones, which can be expensive and may not always make financial sense.
The Volvo S40 2009 is also known for issues with the instrument panel, which can fail due to a poor connection between the information display and the ECU. This issue can cause the instrument panel to malfunction, display incorrect information, or not work at all. The fix for this problem involves refitting the connection underneath the passenger side of the dashboard to restore the instrument panel's functionality.
The brakes of the Volvo S40 2009 can also be a source of problems, with some drivers reporting that the distance travelled when the brakes are applied is overly long, leading to potential collisions. This issue is often caused by worn-out brake rotors, which can be replaced with new ones to restore the braking performance.
Finally, the Volvo S40 2009 is known for issues with the wheels and suspension, including a knocking noise from the front end under acceleration and deceleration, which can be caused by worn-out wheel bearings, CV joints, or suspension components. The fix for this problem involves inspecting and replacing the worn-out parts to restore the vehicle's stability and handling.
In summary, the Volvo S40 2009 is known for several common problems, including issues with the fuel rail pressure sensor, engine mounts, seats, instrument panel, brakes, and wheels/suspension. While some of these issues can be expensive to fix, regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent them from becoming more serious problems.

- Summary: I purchased the 2009 Volvo on 10/5 at M&M Auto Sales LLC and on 10/9 at 6:20 am my vehicles check engine light turned on and a transmission service urgent light turned on. On 10/11 I went to AAMCO and they informed me that the transmission needed repairs costing up to 4k. When I purchased the car the dealership disclosed to me that the vehicle is in perfect condition. As of 10/21 I went to a Mechanic Shop called Pegoraro and ran a full auto diagnostic on the vehicle. With repairs on the vehicle costing $12,433.03 which involve fixes to the Timing Belt, Cooling System Fluid Exchange, Drive Belt Tensioner/Idle Assembly, Automatic Transmission Assembly, Remove and Install, Brake Fluid Exchange, and Lastly Disc Brake Pads, Rotors and Calipers (Rear). Obviously the vehicle isn't in "perfect condition". After getting this diagnostic I was informed that the vehicles Odometer has been tampered with as well as a bunch of other codes have been turned off before I purchased this vehicle. I just want a refund for this vehicle and to take my business elsewhere.

This is our third Volvo. The other two were station wagons (over 15 years ago). We purchased this for my 17 year old daughter as her first car. I am impressed because it is sporty enough for her and it is still a solid little Volvo. I just wish I could drive it sometime.

I haven't loved a car this much in many moons! I used to have a 2008 4 door Jeep Wrangler Sahara loaded, which was fun in summer and winter, but an uncomfortable disaster the rest of the year. Then I discovered the Volvo S40 and WOW, it's fun ALL THE TIME! It looks and performs beautifully, and what a deal too! I bought an untitled demo for $23K (originally $27K) and they even paid off my Jeep. Why didn't I choose Volvo sooner??? It's safe, stylish, and fast!

I was lucky enough to buy the Volvo S40 from someone in my hometown, even though I had never met them before. I knew it was meant to be! I had previously owned a 240 DL sedan and was really happy with the Volvo product. This peppy ride exceeded all my expectations. However, after 6 years of driving a small car, I decided to upgrade to a small SUV, although not a Volvo. Even though this car is 11 years old, it still has a lot of life left in it. It would make a great first car for a young driver, they would be really impressed!

Congratulations on your recent purchase of a Volvo in Dec 08! The car is absolutely stunning, with clean and smooth exterior lines that give it a sleek and sporty design. The interior is just as impressive, with soft and comfortable leather seats that fit you snugly. The console is simple yet robust, making it easy to use without any confusion. Not only does the car look great, but it also drives great. It's very quiet at highway speeds, and the hi-performance audio sounds amazing. If you're in the market for a sporty sedan with clean looks inside and out, this is definitely the car for you!

Congratulations on your new 08 S40 T5 AWD! It's a great value compared to the competition, and its higher rate of depreciation makes it an excellent choice for a used car if you plan on keeping it for a while. You'd have to pay much more for a similar Legacy GT or Audi A4. The handling is better than most sedans, and it's good enough for spirited driving. While climbing mountain passes, the turbo seems to provide more than ample power on the way to Tahoe. Although acceleration isn't great at low or midrange, using the tiptronic helps, as the tranny on auto keeps revs low. On snow and ice, the Haldex type AWD system performs almost invisibly. Overall, it's a very good buy, and you're sure to enjoy an average of 24mpg. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to touch base with you about your car. I remember purchasing mine back in 2011 with only 16,000 miles and being so excited about it! However, I did have a bit of trouble with the driver side door not latching properly and had to take it back to the shop within 3 weeks. Since then, I've had a couple of other minor issues, like a programming problem that caused it not to start and a grinding noise while cornering. Recently, I was told that I need to replace all the tires at 30k miles, but apparently that's common for this model. Have you experienced anything similar with your car?
Antonio Hodkiewicz 2024-09-23
Avoid purchasing this car. I made the mistake of buying a Volvo in 2009 when my daughter was born, selling my reliable 1.7 Puma. Unfortunately, the engine failed just over two years later. Despite having my second-year service late, Volvo voided the warranty and their customer care team refused to speak with me. Even after spending £6,000 on a new engine, it failed in the same way as the previous one just seven days later. Upon researching the engine, I discovered it to be of poor quality.
