- Summary: After buying the vehicle on 7/9/21, the car started having problems with the cooling system. I took it to a repair shop and they said the cooling system was overfilled. The air problem continued. I took it back to the dealership who said they fixed it but it continued. I contacted the prior Manufactuer service center who informed me the computer chip was recommended to be replaced when the dealer had it serviced but they declined, causing all the electrical and cooling issues. I called the dealer and they said they had the alarm disconnected also which was why the computer system wasn't working. The alarm system doesn't work and I have had to replace the key fob 3 times. I took it to another repair shop who diagnosed the following as permanent failure codes: 6 CEM codes, 1 ECM code, 6 SRS codes, 2 DIM codes, 11 CEM-HS codes, passenger and driver door codes, 4 climate control codes, 1EPS code, 4 SWM codes, DD11, all of which are safety hazards.

THIS NEARLY CAUSED AN ACCIDENT ON THE INTERSTATE, BUT I WAS ABLE TO PULL TO THE LEFT SHOULDER BEFORE BEING STRUCK. I HAD TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A SHOP WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THAT WHEN THE SERPENTINE BELT BROKE, SHARDS OF THAT BELT WENT IN TO THE TIMING BELT AREA. THIS IS DUE TO A FLAWED DESIGN ON MY MAKE OF VOLVO. THE TIMING COVER IS NOT SEALED, ALLOWING PARTICLES TO ENTER THIS AREA CAUSING SEVERE DAMAGE AND NEARLY CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. I HAVE 20 BENT VALVES THAT NOW NEED TO BE REPLACED DUE TO THIS DESIGN FLAW. THERE IS NO TECHNICIAN SERVICE BULLETIN THAT WOULD HAVE NOTIFIED MECHANICS TO BE AWARE OF THIS POTENTIAL PROBLEM WHEN A SERPENTINE BELT BREAKS, SO MY MECHANIC WOULD NOT HAVE KNOWN TO LOOK FOR THIS, WHICH WOULD HAVE PREVENTED THE ALMOST $3,000 WORTH OF DAMAGE. THIS CAUSED MY CAR TO COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC, WHICH COULD HAVE RESULTED IN NOT ONLY MY DEATH, BUT POTENTIALLY OTHER FATALITIES. I HAVE REQUESTED VOLVO CORRECT WHAT HAS OCCURRED DUE TO THEIR DESIGN FLAW, AND LACK OF PUBLIC NOTIFICATION BUT THEY HAVE NOT AGREED TO DO SO. THIS IS A KNOWN CONCERN AT THE LOCAL VOLVO DEALERSHIP LEVEL, AS MY MECHANIC CONTACTED A LOCAL VOLVO DEALERSHIP IN ORLAND PARK, IL AND WAS ADVISED BY THE MECHANIC THAT THEY ARE SEEING THIS ISSUE ON NOT ONLY MY MODEL, BUT OTHER VOLVO MODELS AS WELL. 2010-11-08
- Manufacturer: VOLVO CARS OF N.A. LLC.
- Components: EQUIPMENT:ELECTRICAL:NAVIGATIONAL SYSTEM(GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM)
- Summary: VOLVO IS RECALLING CERTAIN VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH GARMIN 760 PORTABLE GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM (GPS) UNITS BECAUSE THE BATTERIES ON THOSE UNITS MAY OVERHEAT.
- Consequence: AN OVERHEATED BATTERY COULD LEAD TO A FIRE.
- Remedy: VOLVO ADVISES OWNERS TO PLEASE STOP USING THE GARMIN PORTABLE GPS DEVICE IMMEDIATELY, AND VISIT THE GARMIN WEBSITE TO DETERMINE IF THEIR UNIT IS AFFECTED. THE UNIT'S BATTERY WILL BE REPLACED WITH A NEW BATTERY AND A SPACER WILL BE INSERTED ON TOP OF THE BATTERY NEXT TO THE PCB. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 18, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT GARMIN AT 866-957-1981 OR VISIT GARMIN'S WEBSITE AT WWW.GARMIN.COM/NUVIBATTERYPCBRECALL.

- Components: STEERING:HYDRAULIC POWER ASSIST:HOSE, PIPING, AND CONNECTIONS
- Summary: VOLVO IS RECALLING MY 2008-2009 VEHICLES. A SECTION OF THE POWER STEERING RETURN LINE HOSE WAS NOT PROPERLY VULCANIZED (CURED) AND DOES NOT MEET SPECIFICATIONS. IF THE POWER STEERING RETURN HOSE FAILS, A SUDDEN RUPTURE OF THE HOSE CAN OCCUR.
- Consequence: THIS CAN RESULT IN A RAPID DRAINAGE OF THE POWER STEERING FLUID IN THE SYSTEM AND A COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER ASSISTANCE, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND REPLACE THE STEERING RETURN LINE HOSE ASSEMBLY FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 13, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT VOLVO AT 1-800-458-1552.

I just wanted to share that I purchased my S40 in Feb 09. I never thought of owning a Volvo, but the dealer had this silver brand new 08 available. The sticker price was $27,400, but they let it go for $19,000, which was a great deal. So far, I am really enjoying the car. It is simple yet very strong! Although I wish it had about 20 more HP, it is still a wonderful car.

I think this model is the best value for replacing one of our cars. Although it may not have neck-snapping acceleration, it is far from underpowered and it will give you a thrilling experience while cornering. The mileage on secondary roads is great, the city mileage is real good, and the highway mileage is fantastic. The only minor negatives are that there is no inside trunk release or on the key fob, and the doors do not automatically unlock when the key is removed.

It has proven to be a champ - quick, fun, and just the right size for our needs. It is rated as safe, yet boasts a simple yet stunning design. The stereo (dyna-audio) is by far the best we have experienced, and the turning radius is excellent. The comfortable and supportive seats are an added bonus. This premium compact car offers more than meets the eye. We highly recommend getting the T5 AWD with all the bells and whistles - you won't regret it!
