2007 Volvo S40 problems
The Volvo S40 is a series of subcompact executive cars marketed and produced by the Swedish manufacturer Volvo Cars from 1995 to 2012, offered as a more mainstream alternative to the compact executive Volvo S60 to compete in a lower pricing bracket. The S40 was more or less positioned against premium-leaning small family cars like the Volkswagen Jetta as well as some mass-market large family cars.
The first generation (1995–2004) was introduced in 1995 with the S40 (S from saloon) and V40 (V from versatility, estate) cars.
The second generation (2004–2012) was released in 2004, and the estate variant's name changed to V50.
The range was replaced by the Volvo V40 five door hatchback in 2012.

Common 2007 Volvo S40 problems
The Volvo S40, produced between 2005 and 2012, is a popular choice for those seeking a blend of luxury and solid motoring. However, like any vehicle, it is not immune to problems and issues. This article will explore common problems with the Volvo S40, focusing on the 2007 model, based on complaints from owners.
- Worn Motor Mounts: Motor mounts support the engine and keep it from being directly bolted to the car's body. When motor mounts wear out, they can cause vibration in the passenger compartment and clunking noises from behind the dashboard or firewall. Replacing worn motor mounts is the best solution.
- Front Axle Problems: The front axle is responsible for transferring power from the transmission to the wheels. If the protective boot on the axle's CV joint rips, it can let debris in and cause binding, leading to a clicking sound and potential axle grease spray on parts underneath the car. Replacing the axle or the damaged boot is the best solution.
- Oil Leaks: Oil leaks can occur in various parts of the Volvo S40, including the turbocharger return pipe seal. If left unaddressed, oil leaks can cause significant engine damage. If the leak is coming from the seal, it may be possible to reseal it. However, if the damage is too great, the return pipe will need to be replaced.
- Catalytic Converter Failure: A faulty catalytic converter can cause a smell of rotten eggs inside the car. Replacing the catalytic converter is the best solution.
- Brake Rotor Issues: The brake rotors (brake discs) in the Volvo S40 can wear out prematurely, leading to longer stopping distances and potential safety issues. Replacing the brake rotors is the best solution.
- Sunroof Drainage Issues: The sunroof's drainage channels can become blocked, causing water to run into the vehicle during heavy rain. Regular cleaning and maintenance of the sunroof's drainage channels can help prevent this issue.
- 1.6 Litre Engine Issues: The 1.6 litre engine in the Volvo S40 requires a large and constant supply of engine oil to prevent sludging up. Weak points in the system include the fuel and water pumps, which can cause overheating and poor running of the vehicle. Regular maintenance and inspection of the engine and its components can help prevent these issues.
In conclusion, while the Volvo S40 is a reliable and safe vehicle, it is not immune to problems and issues. Regular maintenance, inspection, and timely repairs can help prevent many of these issues and ensure the vehicle's longevity and reliability.

What is the problem of Volvo S40?
There are two weak points in the oil system, the fuel pump and the water pump. When either of these fails, it causes overheating and means that your car will be using a lot more oil. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-12-02
- VIN: YV1MS390272
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: ON OR ABOUT 12/04/2019 DURING A FLASH RAIN STORM LAST WINTER, MY HUSBAND AND I WAS HEADED HOME ON THE 215 FWY NORTHBOUND IN SAN BERNARDINO, CA WHEN THE CENTER DOME AREA AND THE ELECTRIC SUNROOF INSIDE OUR CAR BEGIN POURING IN HUGE AMOUNTS OF VERY COLD RAIN WATER ON US AND ON THE DASHBOARD, STEREO CONSOLE, GEAR SHIFTER, FLOOR AND SEATS. UNTIL IT WAS SAFE TO EXIT THE FREEWAY, MY HUSBAND TRIED TO SOAK UP AS MUCH OF THE LEAKING RAINWATER AS HE COULD WITH HIS COAT BUT THE WATER CONTINUED TO POURING INTO THE CAR. ONCE IT WAS SAFE TO EXIT THE FREEWAY, WE PULLED INTO A GAS STATION AND EXAMINE THE SUNROOF TO MAKE SURE IT WAS SHUT PROPERLY, WHICH IT WAS, NOT UNDERSTANDING WHY THIS WAS HAPPENING, HE AND I USED AS MANY PIECES OF NAPKINS AND CLOTH THAT WE COULD FIND TO SOP UP AS MUCH WATER AS WE COULD AND AS BEST AS WE COULD. WE DROVE ON THE STREETS THE REMAINING FEW MILES TO GET HOME BECAUSE IT WAS MUCH SAFER TO DO SO AT THIS POINT. LATER, WE RESEARCHED AS MUCH AS WE COULD FIND OUT ABOUT THE PROBLEM VIA ONLINE COMPLAINTS AND REVIEWS FROM OTHER VOLVO OWNERS. WE THEN TRIED ONE OF THE FIXES OFFERED: CLEARING POTENTIAL DEBRIS FROM THE SUNROOF DRAIN HOSES. HOWEVER, WHEN WE TOOK THE CAR TO A DRIVE-THRU CARWASH SHORTLY AFTERWARDS, THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPEN. WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO SELLING THE VOLVO, BUT DUE TO THE LEAKY CENTER DOME AND SUNROOF, THERE IS NO WAY WE WILL CONSIDER SELLING THE CAR WITHOUT DISCLOSING THIS SAFETY ISSUE TO THE NEXT BUYER, EVEN THOUGH WHEN WE PURCHASED THE CAR IN 2013, THE DEALER WHO SOLD IT TO US DID NOT TELL US ABOUT THE SAFETY DEFECT. UNDOUBTEDLY, IF CAUGHT OFF GUARD WHILE DRIVING (I.E. WITHOUT A PASSENGER'S HELPING HAND), NOT KNOWING ABOUT THE DEFECT MAY RESULT IN A MAJOR ACCIDENT OR FATALITY. PLEASE HELP!!!

THIS TIME I WAS COMING OUT OF A PARKING LOT AND HAD TO AIM MY VEHICLE IN A WAY TO AVOID HITTING OTHER VEHICLES. BOTH TIME, AFTER A FEW MINUTES THE CAR STARTED RIGHT UP AND I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE AGAIN. LAST FRIDAY, MAY 3, I PULLED MY VEHICLE OVER AND WHEN I STOPPED THE VEHICLE SHUT DOWN. THIS TIME IT DID NOT RESTART. THE ERROR MESSAGE DISPLAYED ON THE DASH WAS THAT THE "STEERING WAS LOCKED, TRY AGAIN." AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS INCLUDING JUMP STARTING THE VEHICLE, WHICH WAS UNNECESSARY, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START. I HAD MY VEHICLE TOWED TO THE NEAREST VOLVO DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THAT THE "STEERING COLUMN LOCK" HAD FAILED. THE PART NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF OVER $830.

The S40 2.4i is a stylish and well-finished car that has received high marks. The 168 horsepower 2.4 liter normally aspirated 5-cyl engine provides plenty of pep. Although the fuel economy is on the low side, averaging 23 MPG in mixed city/freeway driving, the standard suspension is tight and supple, allowing the car to go right where you point it. However, the electrical system has been a big disappointment. In the 1 1/2 years that I owned the car, I had three occasions where the car didn't recognize the coded electronic key, and a series of erroneous indications of hood unlatched, lights burned out, etc. After a while, the cons outweighed the pros, and I lost confidence. Last week, I sold it and bought a BMW 328i (who can argue?).

I haven't had this car for very long, but I've always loved this body style. When I saw it online, I knew I had to have it. It drives like a sports car and gets decent MPG.

So this is your first car ever! Congratulations on your purchase! I'm glad to hear that you're pleased with it so far. It's great that the inside is quiet and the ride is semi-smooth. The seats sound comfortable and the controls on the steering wheel are a nice touch. Plus, a big trunk is always a bonus! I also think it's cool that the dash is unique and awesome. Enjoy your new ride!

I'm thrilled to say that this is my third Volvo, and I couldn't be happier with it! It's the same color and has the same engine as my previous ones, but everything about it feels brand new. The transmission adapts to the driver, which makes it feel like a glove that's been perfectly fitted. I was a bit worried about what I would do after the warranty expires, but I'm confident that this car will last me for years to come. No matter where I'm headed, whether it's to work, the gym, on a road trip, or out to dinner, I always feel excited to get behind the wheel. Plus, I don't think this car will ever look outdated! Even auto body shop personnel have had great things to say about it. If you're interested, there's an extended VIP warranty available, but you'll need to act fast and get it before the original warranty expires.

I purchased this car used and it was in impeccable shape. Despite having 130,000 miles on it, it looked and drove like it was brand new. I was confident that it would easily last another 100,000 miles without any issues. The previous owners took excellent care of it, keeping up with all recommended maintenance and logging it in the maintenance book, even down to the windshield wiper replacement. Although it did overheat once on my way home from work, it gave me a warning ahead of time and instructed me to pull over before it died. I added a bottle of water to the engine and was able to get home safely. Unfortunately, it overheated again a few weeks later and this time it stalled and wouldn't restart. After getting it towed, I found out that the heads were cracked, even though it wasn't visible. It's disappointing, but we're now looking for a replacement head or a used motor to make it usable again. Despite this setback, I'm still grateful for the time I had with this car.

I purchased my 2007 S40 due to the extended warranty and have enjoyed it. However, I have experienced the same issue with 'bad batteries' twice in 3 years. Despite this, Volvo has not taken any steps to identify the root cause of the problem and has made me pay for new batteries each time. As the original battery was under warranty, the replacement's warranty was null and void, leaving me with the bills. The manufacturer has not taken any action to investigate the issue or acknowledge the product defect. It is important to exercise caution when considering a purchase.

I have found the quality of my S40 to be disappointing. Both my friend and I experienced issues with our AC compressors after 4 years of use. It seems that the quality of Volvo cars has declined over time. It may be worth considering other options, such as Toyota.

Hi there! I have a 2007 Volvo S-40 with about 69,050 miles on it. I've been really good about getting regular oil changes every 30,000-40,000 miles and keeping up with service checkups. Unfortunately, I had a bit of a scary experience last night when my car threw a rod and formed two holes in the engine block while I was driving on I-85. The mechanic who took a look at my car was really surprised and said he had never seen anything like it before. The good news is that the oil that came out of the car was nice and clean, and the small pieces that fell out of the motor were shiny because there was no gunk in the motor due to my good service history. I'm feeling pretty frustrated right now and wondering if this is just a lemon of a car. I don't think I'll be buying another Volvo again, and I would caution anyone who is thinking about buying one to really do their research first. Thanks for listening!

I have experienced multiple issues with my Volvo S40, including the light under the driver side mirror falling out three times, the stereo malfunctioning and needing replacement twice, the leather seats cracking, brakes squealing in reverse, headlights failing, interior rattles that the dealer has been unable to locate or fix, and various interior parts falling off. Recently, the dealer informed me that the front right axle needs to be replaced. This is my second S40, the first being a 2004 model. However, due to the numerous problems I have encountered, I have decided not to purchase another Volvo. I have taken my car to the shop 18 times, which is unacceptable. I recommend that anyone considering this car think twice and opt for a more reliable option, even if it means sacrificing Volvo's safety reputation.
