2001 Volvo S40 problems
The Volvo S40 is a series of subcompact executive cars marketed and produced by the Swedish manufacturer Volvo Cars from 1995 to 2012, offered as a more mainstream alternative to the compact executive Volvo S60 to compete in a lower pricing bracket. The S40 was more or less positioned against premium-leaning small family cars like the Volkswagen Jetta as well as some mass-market large family cars.
The first generation (1995–2004) was introduced in 1995 with the S40 (S from saloon) and V40 (V from versatility, estate) cars.
The second generation (2004–2012) was released in 2004, and the estate variant's name changed to V50.
The range was replaced by the Volvo V40 five door hatchback in 2012.

Common 2001 Volvo S40 problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the Volvo S40 2001, several common problems have been reported:
- Engine Rumble at High RPMs: Some owners have reported a significant rumble in the engine when the car goes over 2500 RPMs. This issue could be related to engine performance and may need further diagnosis to pinpoint the exact cause.
- Vibrations at Idle: Excessive vibrations at idle have been noted in some Volvo S40s, particularly due to a worn-out front engine mount. These vibrations are more noticeable when the engine is cold and can disappear as it warms up. Replacing the engine mount can help alleviate this issue.
- Leaking Fuel Pressure Regulator: A leaking fuel pressure regulator has caused problems for some 2000-2005 and 2008 Volvo S40 owners. This issue can lead to stalling shortly after starting the engine and hesitation during acceleration. It is crucial to address this problem promptly to avoid further complications.
- Transmission Issues: A common problem in many 2005 and 2011 S40s is a slipping transmission, especially in models equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission. Owners have reported hesitations, jerking, or jolting into the next gear. Causes of this issue may include overheating, outdated software, damaged valve body, or faulty shift solenoids.
- Starter Control Module Failures: Owners of 2000 and 2003-2010 S40s have faced challenges starting their engines due to a failed starter control module. Symptoms include lights turning on but the engine not starting, resembling a dead battery. Various factors like voltage issues, damaged connections, or faulty sensors can contribute to this problem.
These common problems with the Volvo S40 2001 can impact the car's performance and reliability. Addressing these issues promptly through proper diagnosis and repairs by a licensed mechanic is essential to ensure the vehicle's optimal functioning.

The estimated lifespan of a Volvo S40 is 286,000mi, before reaching the life expectancy upper limit. Fuel type is a major factor when looking into a vehicles lifespan/life expectancy.
What is the common problem with Volvo S40?
There are two weak points in the oil system, the fuel pump and the water pump. When either of these fails, it causes overheating and means that your car will be using a lot more oil. If you're using excessive amounts of oil, or you notice any performance problems, checks that the pumps are both working correctly.

NO REPAIRS WERE MADE DURING THIS TIME AND I HAVE NOT TAKEN IT TO THE DEALER. SEVERAL TIMES LAST SUMMER I EXPERIENCED SUDDEN ACCELERATION THAT REQUIRED EXTRA HARD BREAKING TO MAKE THE CAR COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. THE CAR SEEMED TO BE GIVING ITSELF GAS EVEN WHILE I WAS BRAKING TO COME TO A STOP, REQUIRING THAT I PRESS THE BRAKE EXTRA HARD. THIS PROBLEMS SOUNDS SIMILAR TO WHAT WE ARE HEARING IN THE NEWS ABOUT TOYOTAS. *TR
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-12-28
- Crash: 1
- VIN: YV1VS29531F
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: I BOUGHT A 2001 VOLVO S40 IN JUNE 2009. I NOTICED RIGHT AWAY THAT THE BRAKES DIDN'T SEEM TO WORK PROPERLY, AS THE STOPPING DISTANCE WAS FAR TOO LONG. THEY ASSURED ME THE BRAKES WERE BRAND NEW. AFTER DRIVING IT A FEW WEEKS, I BECAME VERY NERVOUS ABOUT THE BRAKES BECAUSE I HAD COME CLOSE TO REAR ENDING SEVERAL PEOPLE. I BROUGHT IT BACK TO THE DEALER WHERE I PURCHASED IT AND ASKED THEM TO DOUBLE CHECK THE BRAKES. THEY DID SO AND STATED THAT THEY WERE FINE. SO, I DROVE EXTRA CAUTIOUSLY FROM THEN ON. UNFORTUNATELY, THEY NEVER GAVE ME ANY DOCUMENTATION AND I NEVER ASKED FOR IT. THEY JUST CHECKED THE BRAKES AND SENT ME ON MY WAY, REASSURING ME THERE WAS NOT A PROBLEM. HOWEVER, ON DECEMBER 28TH, 2009, THE BRAKES FAILED WHEN COMING TO AN INTERSECTION. I WAS JUST BEGINNING TO SLOW DOWN (NOT EVEN TRYING TO STOP YET) AND THE BRAKE WOULD NOT GO DOWN FURTHER. I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE, AND IT DID NOT RELEASE. I AGAIN TRIED TO PUSH DOWN THE PEDAL, AND IT DID NOT GO DOWN. I REAR ENDED THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. I LOOKED ONLINE AND FOUND THAT SEVERAL PEOPLE WITH MY SAME YEAR AND MODEL HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS, BOTH WITH THE STOPPING DISTANCE AND THE BRAKE FAILURE. THE NEXT MORNING, I TOOK MY CAR TO THE VOLVO DEALER IN INDIANAPOLIS. THEY INSPECTED THE BRAKES AND FOUND NOTHING WRONG. THEY ALSO VERIFIED THAT THE RECALLED VACUUM PUMP HAD ALREADY BEEN REPLACED. FROM THERE I TOOK MY CAR TO THE BODY SHOP FOR AN ESTIMATE OF THE DAMAGE FROM THE ACCIDENT, WHICH WAS $2,2604.96. UPON LEAVING THE BODY SHOP, I BRAKED AT A YELLOW LIGHT, AND ONCE AGAIN, MY BRAKES WOULD NOT GO DOWN AND I WENT THROUGH THE INTERSECTION. I HAD MY CAR TOWED BACK TO THE VOLVO DEALER. I MADE A CLAIM WITH VOLVO COMPANY, WHO HAD SOMEONE LOOK AT IT AND SAID THE VACUUM PUMP AND PRESSURE VALVE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, WHICH WOULD COST APPROXIMATELY $750. I ASKED FOR AN ESTIMATED TRADE-IN VALUE AFTER THE CAR WAS COMPLETELY FIXED. THEY STATED THAT THEY. *TR

- Date Of Incident: 2007-11-15
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRIC
- Summary: I HAVE A 2001 VOLVO S40 WITH BRAKE PROBLEMS. IN THE MORNINGS WHEN I GET IN MY CAR AND BACK UP I HAVE TO ALMOST STAND UP ON THE BRAKES TO STOP MY CAR. I HAVE ALMOST WENT OUT IN FRONT OF OTHERS CARS BECAUSE MY BRAKES WILL NOT HARDLY STOP. THIS OCCURS DAILY. IF MY CAR SITS FOR A FEW HOURS IT DOES IT ALL OVER AGAIN. THIS TO ME IS A SAFTY ISSUE BECAUSE ONE DAY THEY ARE NOT GOING TO STOP AND I'LL HAVE A WRECK. I HAVE TWO SMALL CHILDREN IN MY CAR. I THOUGHT VOLVO WAS SUPPOSE TO BE ONE OF THE SAFEST CARSS ONE THE ROAD BUT SOMEONE DIDN'T DO ENOUGH RESEARCH. I HAVE BUMPED MY HUSBANDS TRUCK TWICE BECAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM. AND I HAVE ALSO HAD TO USE THE E-BRAKE TO STOP MORE THAN ONCE. SOME ONE NEEDS TO BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS PROBLEM. MY CAR ONLY HAS 110,000 MILES ONE IT. I HAD A 1993 VOLVO 850 BEFORE THIS ONE AND IT HAD 207,000 MILES ON IT WHEN IT WAS WRECKED AND I NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH IT. *TR
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

I HAVE SMALL CHILDREN SO I HAVE TO KEEP MY CAR LOCKED AT ALL TIMES WHEN I'M NOT IN IT. IF THEY WERE TO BE IN IT THEY COULD PULL IT OUT OF PARK WITH NO PROBLEM AND THE CAR WOULD START TO ROLL. I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE PROBLEM BECAUSE I'M SURE I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO HAS HAD THIS PROBLEM AND IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE. THE SHIFTER ON THE INTERNET IS OVER $250.00 TO FIX IT THEN YOU HAVE TO PAY TO HAVE IT PUT IN. *TR

I test drove the BMW 3 Series, the Acura CL, and the Audi A4. I'm happy to say that I chose the Volvo because of the way it handled. Additionally, I felt that the vehicle was more substantial, with less glass and more metal.
-
I haven't owned an S40 myself, but I've had the chance to test drive a few on several occasions. During my time in Sweden, I drove two different versions: the S40 T-4 and the V40 2.4T. If the S40 T-4 ever makes its way to the States, I highly recommend buying it! The driving experience is incredible. It's super fast (240 km/h) and its performance would outdo many in its class, such as the Jetta VR6.

If you're searching for an affordable sedan that stands out from the crowd, this Volvo is the perfect choice for the US market. Although it has been manufactured in the Netherlands since 1996, its look and feel are still very fresh. Don't be fooled by the small size of the engine, as this cute Volvo can move fast and effortlessly in any situation. The mileage is good, and the performance is adequate. Additionally, the interior design surpasses all the cheap American/Japanese kitsch styles that are flooding the market today.

I think this is a great, fun car. I've always wanted to own a Volvo and thought I'd never be able to afford anything better than a used 40. When I learned that they had introduced a sub-30K product, I ran to the dealership and dumped my 3-year old Subaru Outback.

We are delighted to report that we have had no problems with this car since we leased it. It is both quick and extremely comfortable, especially for average-sized people. The air conditioning, brakes, pickup, and storage are all really great. The only downsides we have noticed are the engineering of the radio and control units, as well as the placement of the cup holder.

I bought this car back in 2001, and it was my very first new car! Since then, I've had to replace the brake pads both front and back every year. Unfortunately, my check engine light keeps coming on, and no one seems to know why. I've also had to replace the fuel pump, rotors, every light bulb in the car, the thermostat, fuses, and a few other minor things. I originally bought this car for safety, but now I'm worried that with all of the repairs I've had to make (most of them unexpected), the car might actually compromise my safety instead of protecting it.
Hal Lowe 2024-11-02
I chose a Volvo because it's a luxury vehicle, but it's just fair. However, I haven't had any mechanical problems, so that has been nice. The fuel pump is going out, so it will need to be replaced soon though. It is quite costly to maintain or repair, requiring a higher grade of gas, synthetic oil, and a special oil filter size, unlike most cars that have one size. It doesn't get as good of mileage as I was hoping, on the road it only gets about 28, in town it gets 25. There is a lot of road noise, but it can be drowned out with the stereo. I would recommend this car to those who have extra money to spend, but not to those who are financially struggling.

This vehicle may require some additional maintenance costs. Rear brake pads may need to be replaced every 12K-15K miles ($178), and front pads every 25K-30K miles. It is important to keep in mind that with every scheduled service, you may need to add at least $180 extra for brake pads. Additionally, the headlamp burned out at 15K miles, and replacing the bulb requires taking out the battery. We understand that this can be disappointing, but we are here to help you with any maintenance needs you may have.

I've had quite a few issues with this car since I bought it at 91k miles, and now it's at 100k. Unfortunately, I've had to replace the tensioner, timing belt, motor mounts, alternator, brakes, spark plugs, coils, pressure valve, and some other hose within this time. I would love to purchase a newer car, but I'm unable to get approved, so I've been paying the costs to fix this car. I wouldn't recommend buying this car as it has been in and out of the shop every month for the past six months and has been quite costly to fix.
