The Mitsubishi Mirage is a range of cars produced by the Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi from 1978 until 2003 and again since 2012. The hatchback models produced between 1978 and 2003 were classified as subcompact cars, while the sedan and station wagon models, marketed prominently as the Mitsubishi Lancer, were the compact offerings. Nameplate history
The Mirage has a complicated marketing history, with a varied and much convoluted naming convention that differed substantially depending on the market. Mitsubishi used the Mirage name for all five generations in Japan, with all but the first series badged as such in the United States. However, other markets often utilized the name Mitsubishi Colt and sedan variants of the Mirage have been widely sold as the Mitsubishi Lancer—including in Japan where the two retailed alongside one another. In Japan, the Mirage was sold at a specific retail chain called Car Plaza.
In the United States and Canada, the first four generations were sold through a venture with Chrysler as the Dodge Colt and the similar Plymouth-badged Champ and Colt. Later, the venture brought the Eagle Vista and Summit branded models which sold alongside the aforementioned. Confusingly, Chrysler has also offered an unrelated Dodge Lancer at various stages between the 1950s and 1980s. However, when DaimlerChrysler briefly controlled Mitsubishi through the DaimlerChrysler-Mitsubishi alliance from 2000 through to 2004, the license to the "Lancer" name was relinquished to Mitsubishi for usage in North America. Thus, after the fifth and final generation Mirage, replacement models in North America have adopted the new name.
Mitsubishi introduced replacements for the fifth series of Mirage, starting in 2000 with a new generation of Lancer—now larger, having moved up to the compact segment. Then in 2002, a subcompact five-door hatchback badged Colt globally became available. By 2003, the Mirage and its derivatives had been completely phased out of mainstream Japanese production. For the 2002-era Colt's replacement in 2012, Mitsubishi decided to resurrect the Mirage name internationally for a new sixth generation model.
With the rising popularity of boxy subcompact SUVs in Japan, the Mirage nameplate was used on a domestic market-only model called the Mirage Dingo, from 1999. The Dingo was facelifted in 2001 and canceled in 2003. However, New Zealand sold a very different Mirage from 2002—a rebadged Dutch-manufactured Mitsubishi Space Star labeled Mirage Space Star. This vehicle was not very popular and was discontinued in 2003.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

- Summary: THE RADIO WILL RANDOMLY COMPLETELY LOSE ALL POWER DURING COLD WEATHER WHILE DRIVING. IT SHUTS DOWN AFTER ABOUT TEN MINUTES OF DRIVING AND STAYS OFF FOR ABOUT THREE TO FIVE MINUTES BEFORE POWERING BACK UP. IT ONLY HAPPENS IN COLD WEATHER AND AFTER THE FIRST FEW MINUTES. SINCE MY CAR IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY, I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER A FEW MONTHS AFTER I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. THEY TOLD ME THEY COULD NOT RECREATE THE PROBLEM AT THAT TIME AND THAT I SHOULD LEAVE MY CAR WITH THEM. THEY SAID THEY WOULD NOT TAKE IT APART TO TRY AND FIND THE PROBLEM BECAUSE IT WOULD TAKE TOO MUCH TIME AND COST TOO MUCH MONEY FOR THEM. SINCE IT OCCURS RANDOMLY, AND I NEEDED MY CAR FOR WORK, I COULD NOT LEAVE IT IN HOPE OF IT RANDOMLY HAPPENING FOR THEM. NOW THAT ITS COLD AGAIN, IT STARTED AGAIN. IT'S A NEW CAR SO THIS SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage.
- Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain 2014-2018 Mirage vehicles. The internal acceleration sensor in the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Electronic Control Unit (ECU) can misinterpret vibrations such as those from poor road conditions or a flat tire to be a sensor error thereby disabling the air bags from deploying in a crash.
- Consequence: Air bags that do not deploy as designed in a crash increase the risk of injury.
- Remedy: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the SRS-ECU software, free of charge. The recall began on November 10, 2017. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-17-006.

- Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Mitsubishi Mirage vehicles manufactured July 27, 2013, to September 2, 2015. If the driver enters an affected vehicle with their feet covered water and salt, it may soak through the carpet and cause corrosion to a wiring connector located in a junction box behind a kick panel to the left of the driver's footrest.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash, corrosion of the connector could delay deployment of the frontal air bags, increasing the risk of injury to the driver and the front seat passenger.
- Remedy: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the affected connectors, replacing any found to be corroded. A waterproof sheet will be installed over the connectors to prevent future corrosion. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in February 2016. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-16-001.

- Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (Mitsubishi) is recalling certain model year 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage vehicles manufactured July 27, 2013, to November 20, 2013, and 2012 Mitsubishi i-MiEV vehicles manufactured October 28, 2011, to September 7, 2012. Due to an increased resistance in the impact sensor for the air bag system, in the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the frontal, side and/or curtain air bags when the SRS warning is illuminated, the frontal air bag may have a delayed deployment and/or the side and curtian air bag may not deploy at all.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash, an air bag that does not deploy or deploys late, increases the risk of occupant injury.
- Remedy: Mitsubishi will notify owners, and dealers will replace the affected impact sensors, free of charge. The recall began on November 5, 2015. Owners may contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820. Mitsubishi's number for this recall is SR-15-011.

This is a great fuel saver and a fun little ride. Although some people complain about the CVT and its 'growing' or sounding like 'an angry vacuum,' I personally enjoy its capabilities in the mountains and on the highway. When driving easy (45-55 mph under 3000 rpm), I average between 45 and 55 mpgs. This is my favorite fuel-efficient car to drive, next to my old 2002 Cavalier 2.4. If I didn't have payments left on a Jeep Patriot (which also has a CVT), I would definitely get a second one of these. The only downfall is sudden braking with curves, but a good driver will not present themselves with this issue.

In the summer of 2018, I had some issues with the front shock mounts and it was hard to find the parts to fix it. Eventually, I decided to get rid of it and bought a 2013 Honda Fit Sport instead. In February 2018, I had a problem with the front brakes not working and there was a knock on both sides in the front. I took the car to the mechanic and found out that two lug studs were broken. I also had to replace the bulbs in the front. On August 16, 2017, I managed to do 60.1 MPG stock which was unbelievable! I recently considered trading my 2014 Mirage car for a 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander but decided not to because this car devalues too fast. I checked blue book and black book and found out that it's not worth it. I will keep my car for now and possibly buy a used car or Mazda CX5/9 next year. I have never had any major issues with my car except for a nail on a Potenza tire and busted shock absorbers due to potholes. I have noted rust on bolts on the engine and changed the rotors and brakes last month of July. I need to replace the wipers again. Those Bridgestone Potenza tires keep rolling! I installed a Knight Rider light on the grill and it looks great. The gas went up so it only costs $15 dollars to fill the tank. I still have the car and owe $6,000 on it. I recently installed a new hitch from Etrailer and it was hard as hell to install! I use full synthetic oil and a new air Wix filter. Lately, I have been doing 41 mpg possibly because I took out the fuel-saving crappy tires. I needed a cheap car that would save a lot of gas and had to travel far in Georgia to find a Mitsubishi dealership. I was attracted by the $11,899 price from the Union City, Georgia Dealership on an internet website.The White Manual model was priced higher than I expected, even after factoring in the incentives that unfortunately I didn't qualify for. However, I was able to purchase the Automatic CVT model which was more affordable. I opted for the Blue color and Automatic CVT Transmission with Bluetooth, and I'm thrilled to be getting 54.1 MPG instead of the expected 44! I did have some issues with the car's bouncing and tire quality, but I was able to upgrade to Bridgestone Potenza tires and make some other improvements like installing fog lights and switching to LED lights. Although it can be difficult to find parts locally, I was able to special order what I needed from Mitsubishi.

Nothing other than maintenance. You'll be happy to know that I got the motor changed under warranty. It had air conditioning, cruise control, heated seats, and heated mirrors. Plus, it gets great gas mileage! I also added winter tires for those cold months.

The 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage is one of the most affordable new cars you can buy in the United States. However, don't let the low price fool you into thinking it's a subpar econobox. In fact, it comes with a range of standard features, including power windows, locks, Bluetooth, automatic climate control, traction control, stability control, and more. While it may not be the most impressive car in terms of performance, comfort, or refinement, it certainly makes up for it with its excellent gas mileage and overall quality. Although the interior plastics may feel rough, they are designed for durability and to keep costs down. It's great to hear that you haven't had any major issues with it, aside from a rusty caliper bolt. I understand that parts can be hard to come by, so it's a good idea to pick up some wear and tear items online ahead of time. I purchased a Mirage 2014 from a trusted owner who had serviced it on time. Although I was initially extremely happy with my purchase, after a year of ownership, the computer died, causing a number of problems. Unfortunately, I was billed $5000 for the repairs, which exceeded the price of the car. Despite being disappointed, I understand that as a second owner, the warranty did not cover anything. While this experience was costly, I still believe that the Mirage is a reliable car.

I really like this car, especially its decent speed with a 5-speed transmission. It's also very light and easy to handle. Additionally, there is a lot of aftermarket performance support available. However, there is a significant issue that Mitsubishi should address with a recall. Unfortunately, the rear alignment is non-adjustable and cannot be shimmed due to the spindles being welded directly to the axle. This means that if your rear toe or camber is out of spec (which is the case for 95% of these cars), Mitsubishi will not be able to do anything about it, and your tires will wear out unevenly and quickly. Since this is a clear manufacturer's defect, Mitsubishi should take responsibility and issue a recall. They should manufacture new rear axles with bolted-on spindles (not welded) and install them on every 2012-Mirage sold worldwide with out-of-spec rear alignments.
