First generation (1998–2000)
The first generation GMC Envoy was introduced for the 1998 model year. Introduced a year before the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, the Envoy was the highest-trim version of the GMC Jimmy SUV. In line with the Oldsmobile Bravada, the Envoy was fitted with a leather-trim interior, floor-mounted shifter, and a largely monochromatic exterior with aluminum-alloy wheels. In line with the TrailBlazer and the Bravada, the Envoy trim was offered only in the five-door version.
The Envoy had many extra features not available on the regular Jimmy 4-door including: a remote trunk release, heated driver's and passenger's seats, a Bose sound system, and High Intensity Discharge headlights. Optional features included: a power sunroof, a panic alarm, an anti-theft system, and a power front driver & passenger seat.
GMC ended sales of the first generation Envoy after the 2000 model year as the division adopted the name to replace the entire Jimmy SUV line for 2002.

THERE ARE OTHERS THAT HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUE WITH LOWBEAM HEADLIGHTS. FUSEBOX UNDERHOOD IS LABELED TO CONFUSE OWNER AND RELAYS NOT DESCRIBED WELL IN OWNERS MANUAL. THERE IS NO RELAY LISTED FOR LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS. HEADLIGHT DRIVER MODULE IS A KNOW FAILURE COMPONENT. GM ALSO CHANGED ONSTAR TO DIGITAL SYSTEM LEAVING GM CARS LIKE MINE WITH ANALOG ONSTAR UNSERVICABLE AND REQUIRES EXPENSIVE UPGRADE. HEADLIGHTS GOING DARK WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT IS A DANGER AND VEHICLE SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO FALL UNDER RECALL FOR 2006 MODELS AS WELL. SLIGHT ACCIDENT, RAN OFF ROAD INTO DITCH AND CAUSED LIGHT DAMAGE. I WAS TOLD BOTH SERVICE REPS THAT THIS HAPPEN ALL THE TIME AND THEY WOULD CONFIRM THAT IT WAS DUE TO WEAR AND NOT A DEFECT. BUT IN YOU MANUAL THERE IS NO PROVISIONS TO INSPECT THE SHIFTING CABLE WITH IS A SAFETY PROBLEM WHICH GM AND THE DEALER ARE AWARE OF BUT IGNORE AND TELL YOU HAVE TO BUY A NEW CABLE FOR $75.00 INSTEAD OF SUPPLYING THE BUSHING THAT HAS BEEN WORN OUT THAT IS PRESS FIT INTO THE CABLE THE ONLY DEFECT ON THE CABLE IS THE BUSHING WHICH COST AT MOST $3.00 AND A VERY EASY FIT. I HAVE A BUICK RAINER WITH THE SAME DEFECT VIN[XXX] THE WAY IT WAS REPAIRED WAS THE SHIFT LEVER ON THE TRANS PIN WAS REMOVER AND A BOLT AND NUT WERE PUT IN PLACE OF THE OEM PIN ON SHIFTER AND IT WAS BOLTED TO THE SHIFTER END OF THE CABLE NO OEM REPAIR THIS VEHICLE WAS SOLD TO ME BY GM EAGLE BUICK. I OWN 2 GM VEHICLES WITH THE SAME SAFETY PROBLEM. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN A RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.

Research everything in and out of its class, and this beats them all. It has everything I could want without being overblown. It is user-friendly and functional in all aspects.

To sum it up, I absolutely love this vehicle! I've only had it for a few weeks and everyone wants to see it. I traded in my Durango for it and I'm definitely not looking back. It has great utility and I'm able to haul everything I need. Although there are a few things I miss from my Durango, like the cup holders being too small and the speakers being of a lower model. The biggest problem I have with the vehicle is getting my wife not to take it!

This vehicle is great to drive with a smooth ride, nice acceleration, and fantastic turning radius. The seating is comfortable for all and the vehicle really gets noticed!

My only complaint so far is the lack of front cup holders, as it only has one. I knew when I bought it that the gas mileage was not all that great, but since I have always had pickups, I didn't expect any significant change in the mileage.

This truck drives like a luxury car. The 5300 Vortec V8 engine makes merging onto the freeway a breeze. I absolutely adore the retractable roof and the power midgate. Although it's a manual fold-down, it has a piece of glass in it - just like those in a limo - which is perfect for pet owners. I am extremely pleased with the customer service I have received from GMC and the dealership. They have gone above and beyond to assist me with any post-purchase issues. I would not hesitate to purchase another GMC product in the future.

This car has some really cool features, but it also has some issues. The all-terrain cargo area with power midgate is fabulous, especially for keeping pets out of the 'people' area of the car. However, it's worth noting that in the commercials, they speed up the video when they show the roof opening. In reality, it takes about a minute. Additionally, there is a significant blindspot through most of the rear of the car, making it difficult to see smaller vehicles behind you and nearly impossible to back up.

We chose the XUV because it was a unique fit for our needs at the time. Although it was great initially, we have experienced some issues over the past few years. Unfortunately, the midgate glass window shattered when we were raising it one time. Additionally, the reargate window motor has broken twice in the past 3 years and gets stuck down, making it impossible to open the rear door. We have also had some trouble with the rear door sensor, which has malfunctioned a few times, taking about 5 minutes to get the door open. Lastly, the dealership has informed us that the instrument cluster is bad, as the speedometer and oil pressure gauges don't work. We are currently debating whether to spend $1000 to get it fixed or buy a different vehicle.
