Common 1993 Saturn Sl problems
The Saturn SL, particularly the 1993 model, has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues:
- Wheel Bearings and Catalytic Converter: For Saturn SL2 models, particularly those with manual transmissions and high mileage, wheel bearings and catalytic converters can become problematic. The wheel bearings may wear out and need replacement, while the catalytic converter may near its end of life.
- Water Temp Sensor: Another common issue with the Saturn SL, especially the 1997 SL1 model, is the water temp sensor. If the sensor cracks or malfunctions, it can cause the car to have trouble idling while at a stop or in neutral. Replacing the sensor can often fix this problem.
- Motor and Transmission Mounts: Around 150,000 miles, the motor and transmission mounts in the Saturn SL can wear out, leading to various issues. Replacing these mounts can help minimize problems and keep the car running smoothly.
- Idle Pulley Bearings: At the 200,000-mile marker, the idle pulley bearings in the Saturn SL may go out. Replacing the pulley and belt can help address this issue.
- Valve Body: The valve body on the top of the transmission can cause hard shifting problems. This issue is best addressed by someone experienced, as the valve body contains small parts that require careful handling.
- Valve Cover Gasket: The valve cover gasket is another component that can fail in the Saturn SL. Replacing the gasket can help resolve any oil leaks or performance issues caused by this failure.
- Rear Suspension, Fuel Tank, Brakes, Valve Cover, Transmission Valve Body and Cooling Lines, Plugs, Wires, Cooling Fan, Fender and Headlamp, and Emergency Brake Cables: While not specific to the 1993 Saturn SL, these components are known to be serviceable with hand tools and a basic toolkit, making repairs more accessible for Saturn S-Series owners.
- Stuck Oil Control Rings: The Saturn 1.9L engines are known for "stuck oil control rings," which can lead to excessive oil consumption. Keeping up with oil changes and adding oil as needed can help extend the engine's life beyond 300,000-400,000 miles, with some Saturn owners still on the road at over 600,000 miles.
- Recalls: The Saturn SL has had several recalls, including issues with the instrument panel carrier assembly, brake pipe attachment nuts, rear bumper fasteners, fuel system integrity, and automatic transaxle park lock cable assembly. Owners should be aware of these recalls and have their vehicles serviced as needed.
In summary, the Saturn SL, particularly the 1993 model, has several common problems that owners may encounter. These issues range from timing chain noise to recalls related to fuel system integrity and automatic transaxle park lock cable assembly. Regular maintenance and addressing issues promptly can help extend the life of the vehicle and ensure safe and reliable operation.
How long is the life expectancy of a Saturn car?
Best Answer
Actually you can get up 400,000 miles out of that car if you take care of it & change the fluids regularly just like any car proper maintenance see & what happens good luck !
How many miles does a Saturn last?
Saturn Ion drivers regularly report the car surpassing 200,000 miles on the original engine and transmission. With excellent care there's no reason an Ion can't shoot right past a quarter million miles, but you'll have to be on the lookout for excessive wear and tear from previous owners.
Who made the Saturn SL2 engine?
The powerplant used in Saturn S-Series automobiles was a straight-4 aluminum piston engine produced by Saturn, a subsidiary of General Motors. The engine was only used in the Saturn S-series line of vehicles (SL, SC, SW) from 1991 through 2002.
Why wont my Saturn SL1 turn over?
The most common reasons a Saturn SL1 won't start are a dead battery, an alternator problem, or failed starter.

1993 Saturn Sl recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 1993 Saturn Sl.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:ALTERNATOR/GENERATOR/REGULATOR
- Summary: THE GENERATOR ELECTRICAL WIRING IS NOT PROTECTED AGAINST EXCESSIVE CURRENT FLOW WHICH MAY BE CAUSED BY AN ELECTRICAL SHORT CIRCUIT IN THE GENERATOR.
- Consequence: SHOULD AN ELECTRICAL SHORT CIRCUIT OCCUR IN THEGENERATOR, THE GENERATOR WIRING HARNESS WOULD EXPERIENCE EXCESSIVE CURRENT FLOW.UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS, ENOUGH HEAT COULD BE GENERATED TO IGNITE SURROUNDINGMATERIALS. IF THIS OCCURS, AN UNDERHOOD FIRE COULD RESULT WITH OR WITHOUT THEENGINE RUNNING AND WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.
- Remedy: THE GENERATOR WIRING HARNESS WILL BE REPLACED WITH ONE THAT WILL OPEN AS A FUSE WOULD UNDER CERTAIN EXCESSIVE CURRENT FLOW CONDITIONS.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:12V/24V/48V BATTERY:CABLES
- Summary: THE POSITIVE BATTERY CABLE TERMINAL AT THE STARTER SOLENOID MAY BE FORMED INCORRECTLY. INCORRECTLY FORMED TERMINALS CAN CONTACT THE STARTER SOLENOID HOUSING AND CAUSE AN ELECTRIC SHORT CIRCUIT.
- Consequence: AN ELECTRICAL SHORT CIRCUIT BETWEEN THE BATTERY CABLE ANDTHE STARTER HOUSING CAN RESULT IN AN UNDERHOOD FIRE.
- Remedy: INSPECT AND, IF NECESSARY, ADJUST THE CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE POSITIVE BATTERY CABLE TERMINAL SO THAT IT DOES NOT CONTACT THE STARTER SOLENOID HOUSING.
