2003 Ford F-550 sd problems
The Ford Super Duty (also known as the Ford F-Series Super Duty) is a series of heavy-duty pickup trucks produced by the Ford Motor Company since the 1999 model year. Slotted above the consumer-oriented Ford F-150, the Super Duty trucks are an expansion of the Ford F-Series range, from F-250 to the F-600. The F-250 through F-450 are offered as pickup trucks, while the F-350 through F-600 are offered as chassis cabs.
Rather than adapting the lighter-duty F-150 truck for heavier use, Super Duty trucks have been designed as a dedicated variant of the Ford F-Series. The heavier-duty chassis components allow for heavier payloads and towing capabilities. With a GVWR over 8,500 lb (3,900 kg), Super Duty pickups are Class 2 and 3 trucks, while chassis-cab trucks are offered in Classes 3, 4, 5, and 6. The model line also offers Ford Power Stroke V8 diesel engines as an option.
Ford also offers a medium-duty version of the F-Series (F-650 and F-750), which is sometimes branded as the Super Duty, but is another chassis variant. The Super Duty pickup truck also served as the basis for the Ford Excursion full-sized SUV.
The Super Duty trucks and chassis-cabs are assembled at the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky, and at Ohio Assembly in Avon Lake, Ohio. Prior to 2016, medium-duty trucks were assembled in Mexico under the Blue Diamond Truck joint venture with Navistar International.

Common 2003 Ford F-550 sd problems
Based on complaints from owners of the Ford F-550 Super Duty 2003, several common problems have been reported. Here is a detailed list of these issues:
- Steering and Suspension Problems: Owners have reported issues with shocks, struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage, power steering, wheel balance, springs, torsion bars, bushings, and electronic or air suspension. Complaints include steering wheel vibrations, loose steering, and violent shaking after hitting bumps or potholes, leading to safety concerns like difficulty staying in the lane or potential collisions.
- Battery Saver Circuit Issues: Complaints related to the battery saver circuit, which controls power windows, radio, door locks, and the cluster itself, have been noted. Problems with intermittent power, power windows, dome light, and radio have been linked to issues with the battery saver relay cluster, requiring intricate microscope soldering for repair.
- Fuel System Problems: Recalls related to the fuel system, including localized depressions in the fuel tank wall, fuel tank mounting issues, and fuel leaks, have been reported. These issues can lead to fuel odors, warning lights illuminating, or potential fuel leaks, necessitating fuel tank replacements or repairs.
- Airbag and Safety System Recalls: Recalls related to airbags, including issues with the clockspring jumper wire coming in contact with the driver side frontal airbag lower horn plate, have been reported. This contact can lead to wire insulation chafing, potential short circuits, and the airbag warning lamp illuminating, requiring repairs to be performed free of charge.
- Transmission Downshifting Problems: Some owners have reported transmission issues where the vehicle unexpectedly downshifts into first gear, regardless of speed. This issue affects the 2011-2013 F-150 vehicles equipped with a 6-speed transmission, requiring a reprogramming of the powertrain control module to address the problem.
These common problems reported by owners of the Ford F-550 Super Duty 2003 highlight various safety, performance, and reliability concerns that have been identified and addressed through recalls or repairs.

- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,EQUIPMENT
- Summary: I HAVE EXPERIENCED NUMEROUS ENGINE FAILURES, OF WHICH I HAVE THE RECEIPTS, ON MY F500 FORD WITH THE 6.0 DIESEL ENGINE, AT A COST TO ME OF OVER $7,000. AT THE TIME OF THE FAILURES, THE ENGINE WAS ONLY OUT OF WARRANTY FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. BECAUSE A DIESEL SHOULD LAST FOR A RELATIVELY LONG PERIOD OF TIME AND SHOULD NOT HAVE THESE TYPES OF PROBLEMS, I ASKED FORD TO COVER THE BILL. IN SHORT, FORD WOULD NOT GIVE ME THE TIME OF DAY OR ADMIT TO ANYTHING. I AM VERY CONCERNED AS I DON' T MAKE THE KIND OF MONEY IT TAKES TO CONTINUALLY INVEST IN AN ENGINE THAT SHOULD STILL RUN FINE. I HAVE ALSO DISCUSSED THIS WITH OTHERS THAT OWN THE SAME ENGINE AND HAVE FOUND THAT THE TYPE OF PROBLEMS THAT I'VE HAD ARE QUITE COMMON WITH THE 6.0 ENGINE. I HAVE ALL THE RECEIPTS AND EXPECT FORD TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR WHAT IS CLEARLY A POORLY BUILT ENGINE. I'M ALSO HAVING TROUBLE WITH THE AIR CONDITIONER FOR YEARS AND HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO FIND THE PROBLEM. I AWAIT YOUR REPLY AND CAN SEND YOU A COPY OF THE BILLS AND MY CORRESPONDENCE WITH FORD.
