2015 Volkswagen Golf sportwagen problems
The Volkswagen Golf is a compact car/small family car (C-segment) produced by the German automotive manufacturer Volkswagen since 1974, marketed worldwide across eight generations, in various body configurations and under various nameplates – including as the Volkswagen Rabbit in the United States and Canada (Mk1 and Mk5), and as the Volkswagen Caribe in Mexico (Mk1).
The original Golf Mk1 was a front-engined, front-wheel drive replacement for the air-cooled, rear-engined, rear-wheel drive Volkswagen Beetle. Historically, the Golf is Volkswagen's best-selling model and is among the world's top three best-selling models, with more than 35 million units sold as of 2019.
Initially, most Golfs were 3-door hatchbacks. Other variants include a 5-door hatchback, estate (Variant, from 1993), convertible (Cabriolet and Cabrio, 1979–2002, Cabriolet, 2011–present), and a Golf-based saloon, called the Jetta, Vento (from 1992) or Bora (from 1999). The Golf covers economy to high-performance market segments.
The Golf has won awards, including the World Car of the Year in 2009, with the Mk6 and in 2013 with the Mk7. Along with the Renault Clio and the Vauxhall Astra, the Golf is one of only three cars to have won European Car of the Year twice, in 1992 and 2013. The Golf has made the annual Car and Driver 10Best list multiple times. The Mk7 won the Motor Trend Car of the Year award in 2015, and the Mk1 GTI also won the award in 1985. The Mk4 won for the best-selling car in Europe in 2001.

STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-04
- VIN: 3VWCA7AU2FM
- Components: STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: The emissions modification calibration by Volkswagen causes the coolant to be exposed to elevated temperatures due to higher exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) use to control emissions. These elevated higher temperatures degrade the coolant faster than designed and lead to precipitates falling out of solution in the factory filled G13 coolant. This causes buildup and deposits to form throughout the cooling system, particularly in the heater core which can block proper coolant flow & lead to coolant system failure, specifically of hoses associated with the heater core. When these fail the engine can over heat, and stop which causes loss of steering, propulsion and braking abilities. There is a similar problem on 2012 models with the TDI engine, which has been addressed but the 2015 models are being stranded on the roads creating a safety hazard to the drivers of the vehicles and other motorists on the road.

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-03
- VIN: 3VW2A7AU5FM
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: One night I started hearing a crunching noise while I was turning my wheel at low speeds. I backed out of a parking spot and started to turn the wheel to hear the full extent of the noise. The next morning, I got up and went out, backed up the car, turned the wheel to the same noise coming from the steering wheel. About an hour later, I drove home and turned into my parking spot, when the noise got worse and then stopped. At the end of the noise, two error codes arose: Airbag and transmission error. The steering wheel controls, such as volume and song control do not work, as well as other functions on the wheel, such as the dash control and cruise control buttons. I quickly googled the symptoms around the make, model and year and saw mass amounts of Volkswagen vehicles around 2015 that experienced the same issues, and the issue of a faulty clock-spring being the culprit. With this in mind, I reached out to a Volkswagen dealership to relay my concerns and the conversation ended with an appointment booked and a consensus that the issue was a faulty clock-spring, as many have had this issue. This issue seems to be widespread throughout many years and models of the Volkswagen line, however, my car follows a wide group of cars by one year in manufacture date, yet it lacks a recall part, despite the believed widespread affected group of cars. My appointment with the Volkswagen dealership went as expected- they found that my clock spring was indeed the issue. The service advisor admitted that the "clock-springs are bound to break." However, my car is 6,000 miles out of warranty to be able to cover the cost of this repair at the moment of typing this. And with further confirmation, the clock spring part is not a recalled part, thus deeming the uncovered service, despite the admittance to a faulty and common issue. I drove a significant distance to reach my dealership with the fear of my stearing wheel locking up while I am driving on the freeway. It has yet to lock.

Due to a problem with a suction jet pump seal inside the fuel tank, fuel may flow into the evaporative emissions (EVAP) system and possibly leak out of the charcoal canister.
- Consequence: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: Dealers will replace the suction pump, free of charge. Final owner notification letters for Audi owners were mailed on July 25, 2024. Final owner letters for VW owners were mailed on August 13, 2024. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 or Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's numbers for this recall are VW: 20UF/Audi: 20YF. Vehicles that were previously recalled under 16V-647 will need to have the new remedy completed. This recall expands and replaces previous recall number 16V-647.
- Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2017 Volkswagen Passat, 2018 Tiguan LWB, 2007-2009 Jetta Sedan, 2011-2013, 2015 and 2019 Jetta, 2013 Jetta Hybrid, 2008-2009 Jetta Sportwagen, 2015 Golf Sportwagen, 2013 Golf, 2008-2010 and 2012-2013 Beetle and Beetle Convertible, 2008-2010 Beetle, and Beetle Convertible vehicles. - Consequence: If the vehicles do not meet all regulatory requirements, there could be an increased risk of a crash, fire, or injury.
- Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners and repurchase the affected vehicles. The recall began November 6, 2019. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 01D7. Note: This recall is an expansion of NHTSA recall number 18V-329.
- Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
- Components: STEERING:COLUMN LOCKING:ANTI-THEFT DEVICE
- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2015-2018 Volkswagen Golf and Golf Sportwagen vehicles. The build of silicate on the shift lever micro switch contacts may enable the key to be removed from the ignition while the vehicle shift lever is not in "Park." As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 114, "Theft Protection and Rollaway Prevention."
- Consequence: Removing the key while the shift lever is in a position other than "Park" increases the risk of an unintended vehicle rollaway that may result in personal injury or a crash.
- Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will install an additional switch and circuit board, free of charge. The recall began March 19, 2019. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 37L5.

I've been driving gas and diesel VWs for 35 years, with my previous ride being a 312k mile 2002 Jetta TDI that's never had a major problem and still runs great, but it's time to move on. I considered a Passat, but it was bigger than I needed and drove like a large car, with meh styling. I also considered the now discontinued Jetta Sportwagen, but it had the lesser version of the TDI, blob styling, and just couldn't get me excited. However, this new Golf Sportwagen snuck up on me and ended up in my garage in about two weeks. Even though the Golf has historically been positioned as their low-end model series, in recent years it has enjoyed a reputation as their performance series, with classic VW Euro handling, more sporty everything, and even higher-end interiors. I really wanted a snappy handling car like my old Jetta and previous GTI, so as stated above, the Golf series is the closest you can get in their line-up. This thing handles much better than a Passat, if not quite as well as my older VWs. The S version has only 16Also, the process of getting in and out of the car is not as smooth as previous models. It seems that the door frame is a little further forward relative to the seat, and the roof line at the door is a bit lower despite plenty of headroom. Additionally, there is a pronounced hump on the underside of the steering column. However, once in the car, it fits like a glove. The backup camera comes on instantly, which is a significant improvement from previous model years that had a lengthy delay. The entertainment system in older models was slow to respond to anything, but this year they have totally fixed all that with a new system. People have complimented my interior, and VW has made improvements in most of their models' interiors after taking heat in recent years. This Golf looks quite high-end and stylish. With multiple extremely high mileage VWs in my family, not one has ever had a crack, tear, or any other failure of cloth, velour, or vinyl seating, and from the looks of it, I expect the trend to continue. The exterior lines and styling make the best of the wagon body style, and it actually looks a bit sporty. The doors and trunk shut like safe doors, as in previous VWs, a solidness competing Asian cars don't have. Everything about the construction of the car exudes quality. This one was Mexican made, but so were my last two VWs with over 600k miles between them with no major repairs or even body noises or rattles. The stereo is a pleasant surprise, not as good as the awesome one in my 02, but solid. It sounds like it needs more amp and better tweeters, with some distortion at moderately high levels that doesn’t sound like a speaker problem. I understand that the difference between this and the Fender system in the SEL is an amp and subwoofer. These speakers put out deep, solid bass at medium volume, but the amp runs out quickly. The whole electronics package is a big improvement over previous years, and I really like it.I really wish they had included a proper USB port, which is a common complaint. Additionally, the connector for the adapter cord is recessed and the cord itself has a stiff right angle connection that can be difficult to insert (definitely not something to attempt while driving). Furthermore, the cord is only a foot long, which doesn't give me much flexibility with my iPod. However, once it syncs with the car, I can do everything through the stereo that I can on the iPod, and it's even easier. Adapters for other devices are available on eBay for just $13, so there's no need to pay VW's inflated prices. I've owned several gas and diesel VWs, and every one of them has exceeded its EPA highway mileage rating in everyday driving. Many Passat owners have reported getting upper forties and even fifties with the larger automatic model, so this is entirely believable. VW has always been conservative in their ratings. Despite most of my driving being at 75mph, I have consistently achieved 46-47mpg. While this car may not have quite the same light tossability as my old VWs, it is still a car that you can really enjoy driving.

As a city-living mom of one, I needed a car that could hold a lot of stuff but still fit in a compact parking spot. Luckily, this car was basically designed with me in mind! I can fit all of our camping equipment in it for weekend travel, especially if we add a roof bag, which is easy to put on the roof since it's not an SUV. It's also really fun to drive, especially with the manual, which is important to me. While the city gas mileage isn't all that great, under 25 mpg, I do a lot of start and stop driving in a hilly city, so that's to be expected I suppose -- but if you were maximizing for that you should get a hybrid. However, gas mileage on the highway is great. The tank is pretty small, so you do have to make stops on long road trips, but that's not a big deal. Visibility is great, which is key for urban driving with lots of pedestrians. I was originally only planning to keep it a few years, but it's so much fun and works so well for us that I think we'll be keeping it long-term.

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying the utility and gas mileage of the VW Sportswagen TDI! It's great that it's not as big and tall as an SUV, but still has plenty of space for all your gear and furry friends.

Hi there! I noticed that you have almost 9,000 miles on your 2015 VW Golf Sportwagen TSI with automatic transmission. That's impressive! I'm glad to hear that your fuel economy is averaging 29.5 mpg (combined) since you bought the car. It sounds like you do a lot of highway driving, which is great for fuel efficiency. I'm also happy to hear that your car is rock solid and super quiet in city and town driving. It's always a relief to have a reliable car. It's great that you've only had to add about a quarter of a quart of oil since you bought the car new in August 2015. That's really impressive! Just a heads up, your first oil and filter change is due at 10,000 miles and every 10K miles thereafter. Keep up the good work!

I understand the struggle of finding a comfortable car, especially with specific requirements like yours. It sounds like you've found a great fit with this car, which is able to accommodate your family and long commutes with ease. It's impressive that you're able to get such great gas mileage even with a roof box and all terrain tires. It's also reassuring to hear that you've had a trouble-free experience with this car, as long as you keep up with maintenance. Thank you for sharing your experience!

This car experienced some issues shortly after purchase. However, it is important to note that these issues are not indicative of the overall reliability of the vehicle. The car may feel sluggish due to turbo lag, but it still provides sufficient power for passing on the freeway or changing lanes.
